Low lying eigenvalues of randomly curved quantum waveguides

We consider the negative Dirichlet Laplacian on an infinite waveguide embedded in $\RR^2$, and finite segments thereof. The waveguide is a perturbation of a periodic strip in terms of a sequence of independent identically distributed random variables which influence the curvature. We derive explicit lower bounds on the first eigenvalue of finite segments of the randomly curved waveguide in the small coupling (i.e. weak disorder) regime. This allows us to estimate the probability of low lying eigenvalues, a tool which is relevant in the context of Anderson localization for random Schrödinger operators.

Spectral gaps for self-adjoint second order operators

We consider a second order self-adjoint operator in a domain which can be bounded or unbounded. The boundary is partitioned into two parts with Dirichlet boundary condition on one of them, and Neumann condition on the other. We assume that the potential part of this operator is non-negative. We add a localized perturbation assuming that it produces two negative isolated eigenvalues being the two lowest spectral values of the resulting perturbed operator. The main result is a lower bound on the gap between these two eigenvalues. It is given explicitly in terms of the geometric properties of the domain and the coefficients of the perturbed operator. We apply this estimate to several asymptotic regimes studying its dependence on various parameters. We discuss specific examples of operators to which the bounds can be applied.

Anderson localization for a class of models with a sign-indefinite single-site potential via fractional moment method

A technically convenient signature of Anderson localization is exponential decay of the fractional moments of the Green function within appropriate energy ranges. We consider a random Hamiltonian on a lattice whose randomness is generated by the sign-indefinite single-site potential, which is however sign-definite at the boundary of its support. For this class of Anderson operators we establish a finite-volume criterion which implies that above mentioned the fractional moment decay property holds. This constructive criterion is satisfied at typical perturbative regimes, e. g. at spectral boundaries which satisfy 'Lifshitz tail estimates' on the density of states and for sufficiently strong disorder. We also show how the fractional moment method facilitates the proof of exponential (spectral) localization for such random potentials.

Low lying spectrum of weak-disorder quantum waveguides

We study the low-lying spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplace operator on a randomly wiggled strip. More precisely, our results are formulated in terms of the eigenvalues of finite segment approximations of the infinite waveguide. Under appropriate weak-disorder assumptions we obtain deterministic and probabilistic bounds on the position of the lowest eigenvalue. A Combes-Thomas argument allows us to obtain so-called 'initial length scale decay estimates' at they are used in the proof of spectral localization using the multiscale analysis.

Lifshitz tails for a class of Schrödinger operators with random breather-type potential

We derive bounds on the integrated density of states for a class of Schrödinger operators with a random potential. The potential depends on a sequence of random variables, not necessarily in a linear way. An example of such a random Schrödinger operator is the breather model, as introduced by Combes, Hislop and Mourre. For these models we show that the integrated density of states near the bottom of the spectrum behaves according to the so called Lifshitz asymptotics. This result can be used to prove Anderson localization in certain energy/disorder regimes.

Continuity of the integrated density of states on random length metric graphs

We establish several properties of the integrated density of states for random quantum graphs: Under appropriate ergodicity and amenability assumptions, the integrated density of states can be defined using an exhaustion procedure by compact subgraphs. A trace per unit volume formula holds, similarly as in the Euclidean case. Our setting includes periodic graphs. For a model where the edge length are random and vary independently in a smooth way we prove a Wegner estimate and related regularity results for the integrated density of states. These results are illustrated for an example based on the Kagome lattice. In the periodic case we characterise all compactly supported eigenfunctions and calculate the position and size of discontinuities of the integrated density of states.

Hamiltonians on discrete structures: Jumps of the integrated density of states and uniform convergence

We study equivariant families of discrete Hamiltonians on amenable geometries and their integrated density of states (IDS). We prove that the eigenspace of a fixed energy is spanned by eigenfunctions with compact support. The size of a jump of the IDS is consequently given by the equivariant dimension of the subspace spanned by such eigenfunctions. From this we deduce uniform convergence (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the finite volume approximants of the IDS. Our framework includes quasiperiodic operators on Delone sets, periodic and random operators on quasi-transitive graphs, and operators on percolation graphs.

Wegner estimates for sign-changing single site potentials

We study Anderson and alloy type random Schrödinger operators on $\ell^2(\ZZ^d)$ and $L^2(\RR^d)$. Wegner estimates are bounds on the average number of eigenvalues in an energy interval of finite box restrictions of these types of operators. For a certain class of models we prove a Wegner estimate which is linear in the volume of the box and the length of the considered energy interval. The single site potential of the Anderson/alloy type model does not need to have fixed sign, but it needs be of a generalised step function form. The result implies the Lipschitz continuity of the integrated density of states.

Lifshitz asymptotics for Hamiltonians monotone in the randomness

In various aspects of the spectral analysis of random Schroedinger operators monotonicity with respect to the randomness plays a key role. In particular, both the continuity properties and the low energy behaviour of the integrated density of states (IDS) are much better understood if such a monotonicity is present in the model than if not. In this note we present Lifshitz-type bounds on the IDS for two classes of random potentials. One of them is a slight generalisation of a model for which a Lifshitz bound was derived in a recent joint paper with Werner Kirsch [KV]. The second one is a breather type potential which is a sum of characteristic functions of intervals. Although the second model is very simple, it seems that it cannot be treated by the methods of [KV]. The models and the proofs are motivated by well-established methods developed for so called alloy type potentials.

Continuity properties of the integrated density of states on manifolds

We first analyze the integrated density of states (IDS) of periodic Schrödinger operators on an amenable covering manifold. A criterion for the continuity of the IDS at a prescribed energy is given along with examples of operators with both continuous and discontinuous IDS'. Subsequently, alloy-type perturbations of the periodic operator are considered. The randomness may enter both via the potential and the metric. A Wegner estimate is proven which implies the continuity of the corresponding IDS. This gives an example of a discontinuous "periodic" IDS which is regularized by a random perturbation.

A linear Wegner estimate for alloy type Schroedinger operators on metric graphs

We study spectra of alloy-type random Schrödinger operators on metric graphs. For finite edge subsets of general graphs we prove a Wegner estimate which is linear in the volume (i.e. the number of edges) and the length of the considered energy interval. The single site potential of the alloy-type model needs to have fixed sign, but the considered metric graph does not need to have a periodic structure. The second result we obtain is an exhaustion construction of the integrated density of states for ergodic random Schrödinger operators on metric graphs with a $\ZZ^ν$-structure. For certain models the two above results together imply the Lipschitz continuity of the integrated density of states.

Spectral gap of segments of periodic waveguides

We consider a periodic strip in the plane and the associated quantum waveguide with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We analyse finite segments of the waveguide consisting of $L$ periodicity cells, equipped with periodic boundary conditions at the ``new'' boundaries. Our main result is that the distance between the first and second eigenvalue of such a finite segment behaves like $L^{-2}$.

Spectral properties of Anderson-percolation Hamiltonians

This is a slightly enlarged and corrected version of a contribution to the Oberwolfach Reports 3(1):511-552, 2006. We summarise some results on spectral properties of Laplacians on percolation graphs and more general Anderson-percolation Hamiltonians proven in references [4], [5], [6], and [7]. For some specific examples of such operators more detailed spectral properties are discussed.

Lower bounds on the lowest spectral gap of singular potential Hamiltonians

We analyze Schrödinger operators whose potential is given by a singular interaction supported on a sub-manifold of the ambient space. Under the assumption that the operator has at least two eigenvalues below its essential spectrum we derive estimates on the lowest spectral gap. In the case where the sub-manifold is a finite curve in two dimensional Euclidean space the size of the gap depends only on the following parameters: the length, diameter and maximal curvature of the curve, a certain parameter measuring the injectivity of the curve embedding, and a compact sub-interval of the open, negative energy half-axis which contains the two lowest eigenvalues.

Wegner Estimate for Indefinite Anderson Potentials: Some Recent Results and Applications

We review recent and give some new results on the spectral properties of Schroedinger operators with a random potential of alloy type. Our point of interest is the so called Wegner estimate in the case where the single site potentials change sign. The indefinitness of the single site potential poses certain difficulties for the proof of the Wegner estimate which are still not fully understood. The Wegner estimate is a key ingredient in an existence proof of pure point spectrum of the considered random Schroedinger operators. Under certain assumptions on the considered models additionally the existence of the density of states can be proven.

Localization for random perturbations of periodic Schroedinger operators with regular Floquet eigenvalues

We prove a localization theorem for continuous ergodic Schrödinger operators $ H_ω:= H_0 + V_ω$, where the random potential $ V_ω$ is a nonnegative Anderson-type perturbation of the periodic operator $ H_0$. We consider a lower spectral band edge of $ σ(H_0) $, say $ E= 0 $, at a gap which is preserved by the perturbation $ V_ω$. Assuming that all Floquet eigenvalues of $ H_0$, which reach the spectral edge 0 as a minimum, have there a positive definite Hessian, we conclude that there exists an interval $ I $ containing 0 such that $ H_ω$ has only pure point spectrum in $ I $ for almost all $ ω$.

Wegner estimate and the density of states of some indefinite alloy type Schroedinger Operators

We study Schroedinger operators with a random potential of alloy type. The single site potentials are allowed to change sign. For a certain class of them we prove a Wegner estimate. This is a key ingredient in an existence proof of pure point spectrum of the considered random Schroedinger operators. Our estimate is valid for all bounded energy intervals and all space dimensions and implies the existence of the density of states.

Bounds on the spectral shift function and the density of states

We study spectra of Schrödinger operators on $\RR^d$. First we consider a pair of operators which differ by a compactly supported potential, as well as the corresponding semigroups. We prove almost exponential decay of the singular values $μ_n$ of the difference of the semigroups as $n\to \infty$ and deduce bounds on the spectral shift function of the pair of operators. Thereafter we consider alloy type random Schrödinger operators. The single site potential $u$ is assumed to be non-negative and of compact support. The distributions of the random coupling constants are assumed to be Hölder continuous. Based on the estimates for the spectral shift function, we prove a Wegner estimate which implies Hölder continuity of the integrated density of states.
