Thermodynamics of fluid elements in the context of saturated isothermal turbulence in molecular clouds

The presented paper is an attempt to investigate the dynamical states of an hydrodynamical isothermal turbulent self-gravitating system using some powerful tools of the classical thermodynamics. Our main assumption, inspired by the work of Keto et al. (2020), is that turbulent kinetic energy can be substituted for the macro-temperature of chaotic motion of fluid elements. As a proper sample for our system we use a model of turbulent self-gravitating isothermal molecular cloud which is at final stages of its life-cycle, when the dynamics is nearly in steady state. Starting from this point, we write down the internal energy for a physically small cloud's volume, and then using the first principle of thermodynamics obtain in explicit form the entropy, free energy, and Gibbs potential for this volume. Setting fiducial boundary conditions for the latter system (small volume) we explore its stability as a grand canonical ensemble. Searching for extrema of the Gibbs potential we obtain conditions for its minimum, which corresponds to a stable dynamical state of hydrodynamical system. This result demonstrates the ability of our novel approach.

On the selection of models for the high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations of black holes: The mass problem

High-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations of the X-ray flux comming from black-hole binaries have the potential to provide precise estimates of the mass and the spin of the central black hole, if an adequate model for them was available. There are several models in the literature but none of them is commonly accepted. One way to test the available models is to confront their predictions for the masses of black holes with results obtained through other methods. Here, we study the mass bounds that nine of the most commonly used models provide for the three microquasars with known masses GRS 1915+105, GRO 1655-40 and XTE 1550-564 which display high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations in their X-ray spectra. We also propose a statistical method for the assessment of the average success of the models. The results allow us to discard five of them. Here, "the mass problem" designates the conflict between their predictions and the reference masses.

X-ray quasi-periodic oscillations and estimates of the mass and the spin of the neutron star in 4U 1728-34

Three of the averaged light curves from the X-ray spectrum of 4U 1728-34 contain triads of quasi-periodic oscillations: two kHz, an upper and a lower one, and one low-frequency. In the present work, with the assumption that the triads occur simultaneously and with the application of the relativistic precession model the mass and the spin of the neutron star in the atoll source 4U 1728-34 is obtained. The consistency of the three independent estimates of the mass and the spin is also tested. According to the obtained results, the studied neutron star has relatively high mass and moderate spin.

Density distribution function of a self-gravitating isothermal compressible turbulent fluid in the context of Molecular Clouds ensembles II: the contribution of the turbulent term and the potential of the outer shells

In this paper we continue to investigate the energy conservation equation obtained in our previous work. We set ourselves three new goals. The first one is to rewrite the main equations in terms of density profile in order to give more physical insight. The second one is to investigate the significance of two new terms in the energy conservation equation. They originate from the gravity of the outer shells of cloud and the masses outer to the cloud, respectively. The third goal is to investigate the main equation in the case when the kinetic turbulent term scales according to Larson's law and it is independent, formally, of the accretion, in contrast to the previous work. The combination of supersonic turbulence and spherical symmetry raises a caveat which is commented in our conclusions. We obtained two solutions for the density profile. They scale with slopes -2 and -3/2, respectively. The energy balance for the second solution is the same as in the previous paper: this is a free-fall. For the first solution there are two cases. The first one: if the turbulent term does not scale, then it could be important for the energy balance of the cloud. The second one: if the turbulent term does scale, then it is not important for the energy balance of the cloud. The two new gravitational terms don't affect the existence of the two solutions, but the gravitation of the outer masses calibrate the energy balance for the first solution.

Mass Evaluation of The Microquasar XTE J1807-294 by Means of the Relativistic Precession Model

The high frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray spectra of the millisecond pulsar XTE J1807-294 are under consideration. By application of the relativistic precession (RP) model an attempt is made to approximate the observed frequencies as well as to assess the mass and the angular momentum of the object. The obtained mass is too high for a neutron star.

Application of the relativistic precession model to the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17511-3057

The observation of a pair of simultaneous twin kHz QPOs in the power density spectrum of a neutron star or a black hole allows its mass-angular-momentum relation to be constrained. Situations in which the observed simultaneous pairs are more than one allow the different models of the kHz QPOs to be falsified. Discrepancy between the estimates coming from the different pairs would call the used model into question. In the current paper the relativistic precession model is applied to the twin kHz QPOs that appear in the light curves of three groups of observations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17511-3057. It was found that the predictions of one of the groups are practically in conflict with the other two. Another interesting result is that the region in which the kHz QPOs have been born is rather broad and extends quite far from the ISCO.

Confronting models for the high-frequency QPOs with Lense-Thirring precession

Quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) have been observed in the power-density spectra of some low-mass X-ray binaries(LMXB) containing a black hole. The two major groups of QPOs -- low-frequency and high-frequency -- have rather different properties. That is why they are usually studied separately. In the literature one can find a large number of models for the high-frequency QPOs but not so many for the low-frequency ones. HF QPOs have attracted significant research efforts due to their potential to provide indispensable information for the properties of the black hole, for its accretion disc and for strong field gravity in general. However, in order to interpret the data for the HF QPOs of the observed objects we have to fix a model. Here we propose a simple test which could allow us to sift the models. The test is based on five rather general assumptions concerning the nature of the central object in black-hole binaries and the mechanism for the generation of the LF QPOs observed in the PDS of such objects. In other words we combine facts that we know about the LF and the HF QPOs of several objects and search for conflicts. As a result we single out a model for the HF QPOs -- the 3:2 nolinear resonance model. As a byproduct of this study we propose loose constraints on the mass of the LMXB H 1743-322.

Gravitational Lensing by Phantom Black holes

In some models dark energy is described by phantom scalar fields (scalar fields with "wrong" sign of the kinetic term in the lagrangian). In the current paper we study the effect of phantom scalar field and/or phantom electromagnetic field on gravitational lensing by black holes in the strong deflection regime. The black-hole solutions that we have studied have been obtained in the frame of the Einstein-(anti-)Maxwell-(anti-)dilaton theory. The obtained results show considerable effect of the phantom scalar and electromagnetic fields on the angular position, brightness and separation of the relativistic images.

Quasiperiodic oscillations and Tomimatsu-Sato δ = 2 space-time

We model the spacetime of low-mass X-ray binaries with the Tomimatsu-Sato δ = 2 (TS2) metric and study the properties of the orbital and the epicyclic frequencies. The numerical analysis shows that the properties of the characteristic frequencies of oscillation do not differ qualitatively from those of the Kerr black hole. Estimates for the angular momenta of the three stellar mass black hole candidates GRO 1655-40, XTE 1550-564 and GRS 1915+105 are made with the application of the nonlinear resonance model. We find agreement between the predictions based on the 3 : 2 nonlinear resonance model for a TS2 background and the current estimates found in the literature.

Solitons and Black Holes in a Generalized Skyrme Model with Dilaton-Quarkonium field

Skyrme theory is among the viable effective theories which emerge from low-energy limit of quantum chromodynamics. Many of its generalizations include also a dilaton. Here we find new self-gravitating solutions, both solitons and black holes, in a Generalized Skyrme Model (GSM) in which a dilaton is present. The investigation of the properties of the solutions is done numerically. We find that the introduction of the dilaton in the theory does not change the picture qualitatively, only quantitatively. The model considered here has one free parameter more than the Einstein-Skyrme model which comes from the potential of the dilaton. We have applied also the turning point method to establish that one of the black-hole branches of solutions is unstable. The turning point method here is based on the first law of black-hole thermodynamics a detailed derivation of which is given in the Appendix of the paper.

Time Evolution of the Radial Perturbations and Linear Stability of Solitons and Black Holes in a Generalized Skyrme Model

We study the time evolution of the radial perturbation for self-gravitating soliton and black-hole solutions in a generalized Skyrme model in which a dilaton is present. The background solutions were obtained recently by some of the authors. For both the solitons and the black holes two branches of solutions exist which merge at some critical value of the corresponding parameter. The results show that, similar to the case without a scalar field, one of the branches is stable against radial perturbations and the other is unstable. The conclusions for the linear stability of the black holes in the generalized Skyrme model are also in agreement with the results from the thermodynamical stability analysis based on the turning point method.

Charged anti-de Sitter scalar-tensor black holes and their thermodynamic phase structure

In the present paper we numerically construct new charged anti-de Sitter black holes coupled to nonlinear Born-Infeld electrodynamics within a certain class of scalar-tensor theories. The properties of the solutions are investigated both numerically and analytically. We also study the thermodynamics of the black holes in the canonical ensemble. For large values of the Born-Infeld parameter and for a certain interval of the charge values we find the existence of a first-order phase transition between small and very large black holes. An unexpected result is that for a certain small charge subinterval two phase transitions have been observed, one of zeroth and one of first order. It is important to note that such phase transitions are also observed for pure Einstein-Born-Infeld-AdS black holes.

Quasi-normal modes, bifurcations and non-uniqueness of charged scalar-tensor black holes

In the present paper we study the scalar sector of the quasinormal modes of charged general relativistic, static and spherically symmetric black holes coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics and embedded in a class of scalar-tensor theories. We find that for certain domain of the parametric space there exist unstable quasinormal modes. The presence of instabilities implies the existence of scalar-tensor black holes with primary hair that bifurcate from the embedded general relativistic black-hole solutions at critical values of the parameters corresponding to the static zero-modes. We prove that such scalar-tensor black holes really exist by solving the full system of scalar-tensor field equations for the static, spherically symmetric case. The obtained solutions for the hairy black holes are non-unique and they are in one to one correspondence with the bounded states of the potential governing the linear perturbations of the scalar field. The stability of the non-unique hairy black holes is also examined and we find that the solutions for which the scalar field has zeros are unstable against radial perturbations. The paper ends with a discussion on possible formulations of a new classification conjecture.

Connection between black-hole quasinormal modes and lensing in the strong deflection limit

The purpose of the current Letter is to give some relations between gravitational lensing in the strong-deflection limit and the frequencies of the quasinormal modes of spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes. On the one side, the obtained relations can give a physical interpretation of the strong-deflection limit parameters. On the other side, they also give an alternative method for the measurement of the frequencies of the quasinormal modes of spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black holes. They could be applied to the localization of the sources of gravitational waves and could tell us what frequencies of the gravitational waves we could expect from a black hole acting simultaneously as a gravitational lens and a source of gravitational waves.

Born-Infeld black holes coupled to a massive scalar field

Born-Infeld black holes in the Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity, in the case of massless scalar field, have been recently obtained. The aim of the current paper is to study the effect from the inclusion of a potential for the scalar field in the theory, through a combination of analytical techniques and numerical methods. The black holes coupled to a massive scalar field have richer causal structure in comparison to the massless scalar field case. In the latter case, the black holes may have a second, inner horizon. The presence of potential for the scalar field allows the existence of extremal black holes for certain values of the mass of the scalar field and the magnetic (electric) charge of the black hole. The linear stability against spherically symmetric perturbations is studied. Arguments in favor of the general stability of the solutions coming from the application of the "turning point" method are also presented.

Phases of 4D Scalar-tensor black holes coupled to Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics

Recent results show that when non-linear electrodynamics is considered the no-scalar-hair theorems in the scalar-tensor theories (STT) of gravity, which are valid for the cases of neutral black holes and charged black holes in the Maxwell electrodynamics, can be circumvented. What is even more, in the present work, we find new non-unique, numerical solutions describing charged black holes coupled to non-linear electrodynamics in a special class of scalar-tensor theories. One of the phases has a trivial scalar field and coincides with the corresponding solution in General Relativity. The other four phases that we find are characterized by the value of the scalar field charge. The causal structure and some aspects of the stability of the solutions have also been studied. For the scalar-tensor theories considered, the black holes have a single, non-degenerate horizon, i.e., their causal structure resembles that of the Schwarzschild black hole. The thermodynamic analysis of the stability of the solutions indicates that a phase transition may occur.

Scalar-tensor black holes coupled to Euler-Heisenberg nonlinear electrodynamics

The no-scalar-hair conjecture rules out the existence of asymptotically flat black holes with a scalar dressing for a large class of theories. No-scalar-hair theorems have been proved for the cases of neutral black holes and for charged black holes in the Maxwell electrodynamics. These theorems, however, do not apply in the case of non-linear electrodynamics. In the present work numerical solutions describing charged black holes coupled to Euler-Heisenberg type non-linear electrodynamics in scalar-tensor theories of gravity with massless scalar field are found. In comparison to the corresponding solution in General Relativity the presented solution has a simpler causal structure the reason for which is the presence of the scalar field. The present class of black holes has a single, non-degenerate horizon, i.e., its causal structure resembles that of the Schwarzschild black hole.

Scalar-tensor black holes coupled to Born-Infeld nonlinear electrodynamics

The non-existence of asymptotically flat, neutral black holes and asymptotically flat, charged black holes in the Maxwell electrodynamics, with non-trivial scalar field has been proved for a large class of scalar-tensor theories. The no-scalar-hair theorems, however, do not apply in the case of non-linear electrodynamics. In the present work numerical solutions describing charged black holes coupled to Born-Infeld type non-linear electrodynamics in scalar-tensor theories of gravity with massless scalar field are found. The causal structure and properties of the solutions are studied, and a comparison between these solutions and the corresponding solutions in the General Relativity is made. The presence of the scalar field leads to a much more simple causal structure. The present class of black holes has a single, non-degenerate horizon, i.e., its causal structure resembles that of the Schwarzschild black hole.
