Students' confusions about the electric field of a uniformly moving charge

In light of a recent direct experimental confirmation of a Lorentz contraction of Coulomb field (an electric field of a point charge in a uniform motion), we revisit some common confusions related to it, to be mindful of in teaching the subject. These include the questions about a radial nature of the field, a role of the retardation effect due to a finite speed of information transfer and some issues related to a depiction of Coulomb field by means of the Lorentz contracted field lines.

Noncommutativity and logarithmic correction to the black hole entropy

We study the noncommutative corrections to the entropy of the Reissner-Nordström black hole using a $κ$-deformed scalar probe within the brick-wall framework. The noncommutativity is encoded in an Abelian Drinfeld twist constructed from the Killing vector fields of the Reissner-Nordström black hole. We show that the noncommutative effects naturally lead to a logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy even at the lowest order of the WKB approximation. In contrast, such logarithmic corrections in the commutative setup appear only after the quantum effects are included through higher order WKB corrections or through higher loop effects. Our analysis thus provides further evidence towards the hypothesis that the noncommutative framework is capable of encoding quantum effects in curved spacetime.

Constraints on singularity resolution by nonlinear electrodynamics

One of the long standing problems is a quest for regular black hole solutions, in which a resolution of the spacetime singularity has been achieved by some physically reasonable, classical field, before one resorts to the quantum gravity. The prospect of using nonlinear electromagnetic fields for this goal has been limited by the Bronnikov's no-go theorems, focused on Lagrangians depending on the electromagnetic invariant $F_{ab}F^{ab}$ only. We extend Bronnikov's results by taking into account Lagrangians that depend on both electromagnetic invariants, $F_{ab}F^{ab}$ and $F_{ab}\,{\star F^{ab}}$, and prove that the tension between the Lagrangian's Maxwellian weak field limit and boundedness of the curvature invariants persists in more general class of theories.

Nonlinear electromagnetic fields in strictly stationary spacetimes

We prove two theorems which imply that any stationary nonlinear electromagnetic field obeying a dominant energy condition in a strictly stationary, everywhere regular, asymptotically flat spacetime must be either trivial or a stealth field. The first theorem holds in static spacetimes and is independent of the gravitational part of the action, as long as the coupling of the electromagnetic field to the gravitational field is minimal. The second theorem assumes Einstein--Hilbert gravitational action and relies on the positive energy theorem, but does not assume that the spacetime metric is static. In addition, we discuss possible generalizations of these results, to theories with charged matter, as well as higher-dimensional nonlinear electromagnetic fields.

Black hole thermodynamics in the presence of nonlinear electromagnetic fields

As the interaction between the black holes and highly energetic infalling charged matter receives quantum corrections, the basic laws of black hole mechanics have to be carefully rederived. Using the covariant phase space formalism, we generalize the first law of black hole mechanics, both "equilibrium state" and "physical process" versions, in the presence of nonlinear electrodynamics fields, defined by Lagrangians depending on both quadratic electromagnetic invariants, $F_{ab}F^{ab}$ and $F_{ab}\,{\star F}^{ab}$. Derivation of this law demands a specific treatment of the Lagrangian parameters, similar to embedding of the cosmological constant into thermodynamic context. Furthermore, we discuss the validity of energy conditions, several complementing proofs of the zeroth law of black hole electrodynamics and some aspects of the recently generalized Smarr formula, its (non-)linearity and relation to the first law.

Stationary spacetimes with time-dependent real scalar fields

In 1981 Wyman classified the solutions of the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations with static spherically symmetric spacetime metric and vanishing scalar potential. For one of these classes, the scalar field linearly grows with time. We generalize this symmetry noninheriting solution, perturbatively, to a rotating one and extend the static solution exactly to arbitrary spacetime dimensions. Furthermore, we investigate the existence of nonminimally coupled, time-dependent real scalar fields on top of static black holes, and prove a no-hair theorem for stealth scalar fields on the Schwarzschild background.

Capacitance matrix revisited

The capacitance matrix relates potentials and charges on a system of conductors. We review and rigorously generalize its properties, block-diagonal structure and inequalities, deduced from the geometry of system of conductors and analytic properties of the permittivity tensor. Furthermore, we discuss alternative choices of regularization of the capacitance matrix, which allow us to find the charge exchanged between the conductors having been brought to an equal potential. Finally, we discuss the tacit approximations used in standard treatments of the electric circuits, demonstrating how the formulae for the capacitance of capacitors connected in parallel and series may be recovered from the capacitance matrix.

Schwarzschild spacetime immersed in test nonlinear electromagnetic fields

Kerr black hole immersed in test, asymptotically homogeneous magnetic field, aligned along the symmetry axis, is described by Wald's solution. We show how the static case of this solution may be generalized for nonlinear electromagnetic models via perturbative approach. Using this technique we find the lowest order correction to Wald's solution on Schwarzschild spacetime in Euler--Heisenberg and Born--Infeld theories. Finally, we discuss the problem of highly conducting star in asymptotically homogeneous magnetic field.

Noncommutativity and the Weak Cosmic Censorship

We show that a noncommutative massless scalar probe can dress a naked singularity in $AdS_3$ spacetime, consistent with the weak cosmic censorship. The dressing occurs at high energies, which is typical at the Planck scale. Using a noncommutative duality, we show that the dressed singularity has the geometry of a rotating BTZ black hole which satisfies all the laws of black hole thermodynamics. We calculate the entropy and the quasi-normal modes of the dressed singularity and show that the corresponding spacetime can be quantum mechanically complete. The noncommutative duality also gives rise to a light scalar, which can be relevant for early universe cosmology.

Spacetimes dressed with stealth electromagnetic fields

Stealth field configurations by definition have a vanishing energy-momentum tensor, thus do not contribute to the gravitational field equations. While only trivial fields can be stealth in Maxwell's electrodynamics, nontrivial stealth fields appear in some nonlinear models of electromagnetism. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for the electromagnetic fields to be stealth and analyse which models admit such configurations. Furthermore, we present some concrete exact solutions, featuring a class of black holes dressed with the stealth electromagnetic hair, closely related to force-free solutions. Stealth hair does not alter the generalized Smarr formula, but may contribute to the Komar charges.

On symmetry inheritance of nonminimally coupled scalar fields

We present the first symmetry inheritance analysis of fields nonminimally coupled to gravity. In this work we are focused on the real scalar field $ϕ$ with nonminimal coupling of the form $ξϕ^2 R$. Possible cases of the symmetry noninheriting fields are constrained by the properties of the Ricci tensor and the scalar potential. Examples of such spacetimes can be found among those which are "dressed" with the stealth scalar field, a nontrivial scalar field configuration with the vanishing energy-momentum tensor. We classify the scalar field potentials which allow the symmetry noninheriting stealth field configurations on top of the exact solutions of the Einstein's gravitational field equation with the cosmological constant.

Generalizations of the Smarr formula for black holes with nonlinear electromagnetic fields

We present a direct, geometric derivation of the generalized Smarr formula for the stationary axially symmetric black holes with nonlinear electromagnetic fields. The additional term is proven to be proportional to the integral of the trace of the electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor and can be written as a product of two conjugate variables. From the novel relation we can deduce all previously proposed forms of the generalized Smarr formula, which were derived only for the spherically symmetric black holes, and provide the lowest order quantum correction to the classical relation from the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian.

Nonlinear electromagnetic fields and symmetries

We extend the classical results on the symmetry inheritance of the canonical electromagnetic fields, described by the Maxwell's Lagrangian, to a much wider class of models, which include those of the Born-Infeld, power Maxwell and the Euler-Heisenberg type. Symmetry inheriting fields allow the introduction of electromagnetic scalar potentials and these are proven to be constant on the Killing horizons. Finally, using the relations obtained along the analysis, we generalize and simplify the recent proof for the symmetry inheritance of the 3-dimensional case, as well as give the first constraint for the higher dimensional electromagnetic fields.

Constraints on the symmetry noninheriting scalar black hole hair

Any recipe to grow black hole hair has to circumvent no-hair theorems by violating some of their assumptions. Recently discovered hairy black hole solutions exist due to the fact that their scalar fields don't inherit the symmetries of the spacetime metric. We present here a general analysis of the constraints which limit the possible forms of such a hair, for both the real and the complex scalar fields. These results can be taken as a novel piece of the black hole uniqueness theorems or simply as a symmetry noninheriting Ansätze guide. In addition we introduce new classification of the gravitational field equations which might prove useful for various generalizations of the theorems about spacetimes with symmetries.

Does three dimensional electromagnetic field inherit the spacetime symmetries?

We prove that the electromagnetic field in a (1+2)-dimensional spacetime necessarily inherits the symmetries of the spacetime metric in a large class of generalized Einstein-Maxwell theories. The Lagrangians of the studied theories have general diff-covariant gravitational part and include both the gravitational and the gauge Chern-Simons terms.

Parity-odd surface anomalies and correlation functions on conical defects

We analyse the parity-odd ("type P") surface anomalies of the energy-momentum tensor correlators in conformal field theories, with an emphasis on d=4 and d=3 dimensional spacetimes. Using cohomology analysis we construct the expression for the most general P-type surface trace anomaly on a singular 2-dimensional surface in 4-dimensional bulk spacetimes. As an important example, we specialise to the case when the singular surface is a conical defect and show that the bulk P-type Pontryagin trace anomaly induces such a surface trace anomaly. We show that this conical type P surface trace anomaly is given purely by the outer curvature tensor. In addition, we analyse parity-odd surface contact terms in energy-momentum tensor correlators in the flat spacetime induced by the conical defect by studying two special cases in which the contact terms are induced by, (1) type P trace anomaly in d=4 and, (2) gravitational Chern-Simons Lagrangian term in d=3 spacetime dimensions. In both cases we show that the surface contact terms appear in correlators of the lower rank than the corresponding bulk surface terms.

Symmetry inheritance of scalar fields

Matter fields don't necessarily have to share the symmetries with the spacetime they live in. When this happens, we speak of the symmetry inheritance of fields. In this paper we classify the obstructions of symmetry inheritance by the scalar fields, both real and complex, and look more closely at the special cases of stationary and axially symmetric spacetimes. Since the symmetry noninheritance is present in the scalar fields of boson stars and may enable the existence of the black hole scalar hair, our results narrow the possible classes of such solutions. Finally, we define and analyse the symmetry noninheritance contributions to Komar mass and angular momentum of the black hole scalar hair.

On the various aspects of electromagnetic potentials in spacetimes with symmetries

We revise and generalize the properties of the electric and the magnetic scalar potentials in spacetimes admitting a Killing vector field: Their constancy on the Killing horizons, uniqueness of solution for the electromagnetic test fields and the relation between the Bianchi identity and Maxwell's equations. In each of these examples, collinearity of currents with the Killing vector field is shown to be the crucial property.
