Residual Symmetries and Scalar Multiplet Vacuum Alignment in Non-Abelian Flavour Models

We demonstrate that, upon minimizing a renormalizable, single-scalar potential invariant under a non-Abelian symmetry, special orientations in the associated vacuum alignment of the scalar multiplet correspond to the preservation of a discrete residual flavour symmetry in the broken phase of the theory. Conversely, we show that these special scalar alignments are perturbed when additional Lagrangian operators (e.g. renormalizable, multi-flavon operators and/or effective, higher-dimensional operators) are present that break said residual symmetry, leading to a vacuum reorientation and phenomenological consequences. We therefore construct a one-to-one correspondence principle between broken residual symmetries and vacuum alignment corrections, providing a mechanism to identify (and correct) a subtle but persistent form of phenomenologically relevant fine-tuning embedded in -- but often ignored by -- most successful non-Abelian flavour models. We first establish this correspondence in a set of toy models based on the S4 permutation symmetry, and then apply the lessons learned to the more realistic A4 Altarelli-Feruglio and $Δ(27)$ Universal Texture Zero models.

Domain Walls from $Σ(36 \times 3)$, $Δ(54)$ and $Δ(27)$ potentials

We consider the degenerate minima arising from scalar potentials invariant under $Σ(36\times 3)$, or under its subgroups $Δ(54)$ and $Δ(27)$ (with or without imposed CP symmetries), for a triplet of those symmetries. In this framework, we classify the distinct Domain Walls between the degenerate minima and calculate the respective tensions.

Quark masses and mixing from Modular $S'_4$ with Canonical Kähler Effects

We propose a quark flavor model based on modular $S'_4$ with a general CP symmetry. CP violation in the quark sector is entirely realized by the modulus $\langle τ\rangle$. We show that the canonical normalization induced by the Kähler metric plays a crucial role in reproducing the observed hierarchies, while maintaining coupling constants of order $\mathcal{O}(1)$. The minimal model achieves a great fit to the quark sector data, which we take as the PDG 2024 data extrapolated to the GUT scale.

Gravity tidings from domain walls: Flavour hierarchies are making waves

Explaining the observed charged fermion mass hierarchies points to flavour symmetries inducing a suppression of the lighter species' masses. When the symmetries are global, it is expected that such symmetries are broken by gravity via Planck scale suppressed effective operators. The potential of the spontaneous symmetry-breaking "flavon" field, if the symmetry is discrete, then possesses several minima, with the vacuum-degeneracy lifted by the gravity effects. In such scenarios, domain walls might be generated in the process of symmetry breaking. Due to the bias, however, they potentially annihilate sufficiently before Big Bang nucleosynthesis, avoiding conflict with observations and generating a characteristic contribution to the stochastic gravitational wave background. We discuss whether and how minimalistic supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric realisations of such theories can give rise to observable gravitational waves.

Cobimaximal mixing pattern from a $Δ(27)$ inverse seesaw model

We present an inverse seesaw model based on the $Δ(27)$ symmetry and Abelian discrete symmetries, which account for the mass hierarchies and, through a specific pattern of symmetry breaking, leads to viable leptonic mixing angles according to the cobimaximal mixing pattern. In the model, leptogenesis successfully accounts for the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe for a large range of the parameter space, only for the scenario of normal neutrino mass hierarchy.

3HDM with softly broken $Δ(54)$ and $Σ(36)$

We perform an analysis of the scalar sector of 3-Higgs doublet models with softly broken $Δ(54)$ and $Σ(36)$ symmetries. We consider the various vacuum expectation value alignments and consider, for each, softly broken terms that deviate the alignment. We check the evolution of the minima, present analytical and numerical results for the lifting of degeneracies of the physical eigenstates, and describe the decays of the states considering any residual symmetries.

Modular $S_{3}$ flavoured Pati-Salam model with two family seesaw

We present a unified model of quarks and leptons with modular $S_3$ flavour symmetry, where the two lightest family masses are naturally suppressed via a Pati-Salam version of the type I seesaw mechanism, mediated through heavier vector-like fermions. Majorana neutrino masses are further suppressed through a double seesaw mechanism. The viable parameter space has a preferred range of the modulus field with Im$(τ) \sim 2 $, leading to successful fermion masses and mixing. The prediction for neutrinoless double beta decay is partly within the reach of the nEXO experiment. In particular, the Dirac CP violating neutrino oscillation phase is predicted to lie in the range $δ_{\rm CP}^ν\sim 260^o-360^o$.

Constraining flavoured leptoquarks with LHC and LFV

We consider the framework of flavoured leptoquarks, in models with scalar or vector leptoquarks, and look for constraints to the parameter space of these models. Using primarily direct searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and precision processes that probe Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV), we present lower bounds for the masses of the leptoquarks in different flavoured scenarios. We classify the models according to the specific leptoquark, distinguished with respect to their couplings to charged leptons (lepton isolation, two-columned patterns) and in scenarios with specific hierarchies in the couplings (hierarchical, 2-3 democratic, and flipped).

Predictive linear seesaw model with $Δ\left( 27\right) $ family symmetry

We consider a model that accounts for the smallness of neutrino masses through the linear seesaw mechanism and employs a $Δ(27)$ family symmetry to address the flavour problem. The model is predictive in the leptonic sector and faces constraints from Lepton Flavour Violation processes, namely $μ\to e γ$, which indicate a range for the Right-Handed neutrino mass.

A Modular $SU(5)$ Littlest Seesaw

We extend the littlest modular seesaw to a Grand Unified scenario based on $SU(5)$ endowed with three modular $S_4$ symmetries. We leverage symmetry protected zeroes in the leptonic and down quark sectors to suppress deviations to the littlest modular seesaw predictions, but not contributions to the quark mixing. The model is supplemented by two weighton fields, such that the hierarchical nature of the charged-lepton masses, as well as the quark masses and mixing, stem from the content and symmetries of the model, rather than a hierarchical nature of the Yukawa coefficients.

Revisiting the Universal Texture Zero of Flavour: a Markov Chain Monte Carlo Analysis

We revisit the phenomenological predictions of the Universal Texture Zero (UTZ) model of flavour originally presented in arXiv:1710.01741, and update them in light of both improved experimental constraints and numerical analysis techniques. In particular, we have developed an in-house Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to exhaustively explore the UTZ's viable parameter space, considering both leading- and next-to-leading contributions in the model's effective operator product expansion. We also extract -- for the first time -- reliable UTZ predictions for the (poorly constrained) leptonic CP-violating phases, and ratio observables that characterize neutrino masses probed by (e.g.) oscillation, $β$-decay, and cosmological processes. We therefore dramatically improve on the proof-in-principle phenomenological analysis originally presented in arXiv:1710.01741, and ultimately show that the UTZ remains a minimal, viable, and appealing theory of flavour. Our results also further demonstrate the potential of robustly examining multi-parameter flavour models with MCMC routines.

Littlest Modular Seesaw

We present the first complete model of the Littlest Modular Seesaw, based on two right-handed neutrinos, within the framework of multiple modular symmetries, justifying the use of multiple moduli fields which take their values at 3 specific stabilizers of $Γ_4 \simeq S_4$, including a new phenomenological possibility. Using a semi-analytical approach, we perform a $χ^2$ analysis of each case and show that good agreement with neutrino oscillation data is obtained, including predictive relations between the leptonic mixing angles and the ratio of light neutrino masses, which non-trivially agree with the experimental values. It is noteworthy that in this very predictive setup, the models fit the global fits of the experimental data remarkably well, both with and without the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric data, for both choices of stabilizers. By extending the model to include a weighton and the double cover group $Γ'_4 \simeq S'_4$, we are able to also account for the hierarchy of the charged leptons using modular symmetries, without altering the neutrino predictions.

LHC Signatures of $τ$-Flavoured Vector Leptoquarks

We consider the phenomenological signatures of Simplified Models of Flavourful Leptoquarks, whose Beyond-the-Standard Model (SM) couplings to fermion generations occur via textures that are well motivated from a broad class of ultraviolet flavour models (which we briefly review). We place particular emphasis on the study of the vector leptoquark $Δ_μ$ with assignments $\left({\bf{3}}, {\bf{1}}, 2/3 \right)$ under the SM's gauge symmetry, $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$, which has the tantalising possibility of explaining both $\mathcal{R}_{K^{(\star)}}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{D^{(\star)}}$ anomalies. Upon performing global likelihood scans of the leptoquark's coupling parameter space, focusing in particular on models with tree-level couplings to a single charged lepton species, we then provide confidence intervals and benchmark points preferred by low(er)-energy flavour data. Finally, we use these constraints to further evaluate the (promising) Large Hadron Collider (LHC) detection prospects of pairs of $τ$-flavoured $Δ_μ$, through their distinct (a)symmetric decay channels. Namely, we consider direct third-generation leptoquark and jets plus missing-energy searches at the LHC, which we find to be complementary. Depending on the simplified model under consideration, the direct searches constrain the $Δ_μ$ mass up to 1500-1770 GeV when the branching fraction of $Δ_μ$ is entirely to third-generation quarks (but are significantly reduced with decreased branching ratios to the third generation), whereas the missing-energy searches constrain the mass up to 1150-1700 GeV while being largely insensitive to the third-generation branching fraction.

Two A5 modular symmetries for Golden Ratio 2 mixing

We present a model of leptonic mixing based on two $A_5$ modular symmetries using the Weinberg operator. The two modular symmetries are broken to the respective diagonal $A_5$ subgroup. At the effective level, the model behaves as a model with a single $A_5$ modular flavour symmetry, but with two moduli. Using both as stabilisers, different residual symmetries are preserved, leading to golden ratio mixing that is perturbed by a rotation.

Two A4 modular symmetries for Tri-Maximal 2 mixing

We construct lepton flavour models based on two $A_4$ modular symmetries. The two $A_4$ are broken by a bi-triplet field to the diagonal $A_4$ subgroup, resulting in an effective modular $A_4$ flavour symmetry with two moduli. We employ these moduli as stabilisers, that preserve distinct residual symmetries, enabling us to obtain Tri-Maximal 2 (TM2) mixing with a minimal field content (without flavons).

An $A_5$ inverse seesaw model with perturbed golden ratio mixing

We propose a theory based on the $A_5$ discrete group which successfully accounts for lepton masses and mixings. In the proposed model, the neutrino masses arise from an inverse seesaw mechanism. The leptonic mixing consists in a perturbed golden ratio mixing pattern with a strong correlation arising between the leptonic mixing observables, which can be expressed as $θ_{13}$ predicting the other mixing angles and the Dirac CP phase.

Geometric Minimization of Softly-Broken Potentials

We study the minimization of multi-Higgs models with symmetries that are softly-broken. The powerful method of geometric minimization enables analytic minimization of multi-Higgs models with large symmetries. When these symmetries are softly-broken, the method needs to be adapted. We propose a useful generalization that considers the effect of the soft-breaking terms to the quadratic part of the potential, by applying the procedure to restricted orbit spaces. We exemplify our novel methodology by finding and classifying the minima for an $S_4$ multi-Higgs model that is softly-broken with specific terms.

Softly-broken $A_4$ or $S_4$ 3HDMs with stable states

We study multi-Higgs models with a triplet of $A_4$ or $S_4$ symmetry that is softly-broken. Focusing on parameters that softly break the respective symmetries but preserve the directions of the vacuum expectation values of the triplet we analyse the masses of physical states and discuss their decays. In contrast with previously studied symmetries, we find some cases with stable states that are protected by residual symmetries left unbroken by both the soft-breaking parameters and by the vacuum.
