Mechanical design concept version 2.0 for the miniBeBe subsystem of the Multi-Purpose Detector at the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research

We present the design of the mechanical structure of the mini Beam-Beam detector, a subsystem of the Multi-Purpose Detector, soon to enter into operation at the Nuclotron based Ion Collider fAcility of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The miniBeBe detector was designed and is currently being developed by the Mexican team of the NICA Collaboration to contribute to the level-zero trigger of the Time of Flight Detector. The mechanical structure meets the requirements of minimizing the material budget and be free of ferromagnetic materials, without compromising its robustness. The design also allows for easy module replacement for maintenance and overall removal at the end of the first stage of the experiment, without affecting the rest of the subsystems, to leave room for the installation of the Inner Tracking System. In addition, a Finite Element Method analysis of the mechanical components under load was performed. Based on this analysis, it was determined that the design meets the space constraints within the Multi-Purpose Detector, as well as a deformation of less than 1 mm with overall stress of less than 2 MPa, such that no material used in the design is at risk of mechanical failure during operation. The heat transfer analysis of the cooling system revealed that the temperature of the cooling plate is maintained within a range of $19.00^{\circ}$C to $21.41^{\circ}$C, which is sufficient to ensure that the silicon photomultipliers operate below a temperature of 25.00$^{\circ}$C, thereby optimizing their functionality

Thermal and baryon density modifications to the $σ$-boson propagator: A road to describe the transfer of vorticity to spin in a nuclear environment in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

In the context of the description of how the vortical motion, produced in peripheral heavy-ion collisions, is transferred to the spin of hadrons, we compute the $σ$-meson propagator at finite temperature and baryon density. This propagator encodes the properties of a medium consisting mainly of nucleons{, and can be used to model the main interactions between hadrons} in the corona region of the reaction. We compute the one-loop $σ$ self-energy in an approximation that accounts for the large nucleon mass. From the real part of the self-energy, we find the dispersion relation and show that the $σ$-mass receives a non-negligible thermal and baryon chemical dependent {contribution}. From the imaginary part, we also compute the spectral density, which we show to contain a piece coming from the branch cut associated with Landau damping. We also present approximations for the dispersion relation and the residue at the pole in the small- and large-momentum regimes and complement the calculation, providing the sum rules satisfied by the propagator. This study aims to determine one of the elements needed to compute how the vortical motion in the corona region of the reaction is transferred to the spin of $Λ$ hyperons that can interact with nucleons by $σ$-meson exchange.

Relaxation time for the alignment between quark spin and angular velocity in a rotating QCD medium

We compute the relaxation times for massive quarks and anti-quarks to align their spins with the angular velocity in a rigidly rotating medium at finite temperature and baryon density. The rotation effects are implemented using a fermion propagator immersed in a cylindrical rotating environment. The relaxation time is computed as the inverse of the interaction rate to produce an asymmetry between the quark (anti-quark) spin components along and opposite to the angular velocity. For conditions resembling heavy-ion collisions, the relaxation times for quarks are smaller than for anti-quarks. For semi-central collisions the relaxation time is within the possible life-time of the QGP for all collision energies. However, for anti-quarks this happens only for collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\gtrsim 50$ GeV. The results are quantified in terms of the intrinsic quark and anti-quark polarizations, namely, the probability to build the spin asymmetry as a function of time. Our results show that these intrinsic polarizations tend to 1 with time at different rates given by the relaxation times with quarks reaching a sizable asymmetry at a faster pace. These are key results to further elucidate the mechanisms of hyperon polarization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Collision energy dependence of source sizes for primary and secondary pions at NICA energies

We study the evolution of the two-pion correlation function parameters with collision energy in the context of relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the NICA energy range. To this end, we perform UrQMD simulations in the cascade mode to produce samples of pions from $5\times 10^6$ Bi+Bi collisions for each of the studied energies. The effects of the quantum-statistical correlations are introduced using the correlation afterburner code CRAB. We fit the correlation function using Gaussian, exponential and symmetric Lévy shapes and show that for all collision energies the latter provides the best fit. We separate the sample into pions coming from primary processes and pions originating from the decay of long-lived resonances, and show that the source size for the latter is significantly larger than for the former. The source size for the secondaries, is similar but in general larger than the size for the whole pion sample. To further characterize the pion source, we also simulate the effects of a non-ideal detector introducing a momentum smearing parameter, representing the minimum pair momentum and thus a maximum source size that can be resolved. The values of the correlation function intercept parameter are therefore modified from the values they attain for the perfect detector case. Using the core-halo picture of the source, we show that the values of the intercept parameter are influenced by the presence of a significant fraction of core pions coming from the decay of long-lived but slow-moving resonances. These findings serve as a benchmark to compare with future Monte Carlo studies that consider an Equation of State and thus allow for a phase transition within the studied energy domain.

Core-corona approach to describe hyperon global polarization in semi-central relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We report on the core-corona model developed to describe the main features of hyperon global polarization in semicentral relativistic heavy-ion collisions as a function of the collision energy. We first neglect the contribution to polarization from hyperons produced in the corona. In this scenario, the global polarization turns out to be described by a delicate balance between the vorticity-to-spin transferring reactions in the core and the predominance of corona over core matter at low energies. We show how this last feature provides a key ingredient missing in our original model that helps to better describe the excitation function for $Λ$ and $\overlineΛ$ global polarization. To improve the description, we then introduce the contribution to the global polarization coming from the transverse polarization of $Λ$s produced in the corona, which is hereby assumed to be similar to the well-known polarization produced in p + p reactions. The results show a small positive contribution to the global polarization, however they are not yet conclusive due to the small size of the MC sample used in the analysis.

$Λ$ and $\barΛ$ global polarization from the core-corona model

We report on work aimed to describe the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ global polarizations in a heavy-ion collision environment using the core-corona model, where the source of these hyperons is a high-density core and a less dense corona. We show that the overall properties of the polarization excitation functions can be linked to the relative abundance of $Λ$s and $\barΛ$s coming from the core versus those coming from the corona. Both global polarizations peak at collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}} \lesssim 10$ GeV. The exact positions and heights of these peaks depend not only on a reversal of relative abundances with collision energy, but also on the centrality class, both related to the QGP volume and lifetime.

Rise and fall of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ global polarization in semi-central heavy-ion collisions at HADES, NICA and RHIC energies from the core-corona model

We compute the $Λ$ and $\overlineΛ$ global polarizations in semi-central heavy-ion collisions using the core-corona model where the source of $Λ$'s and $\overlineΛ$'s is taken as consisting of a high-density core and a less dense corona. We show that the overall properties of the polarization excitation functions can be linked to the relative abundance of $Λ$s coming from the core versus those coming from the corona. For low collision energies, the former are more abundant whereas for higher energies the latter become more abundant. The main consequence of this reversing of the relative abundance is that both polarizations peak at collision energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\lesssim 10$ GeV. The exact positions and heights of these peaks depend not only on this reversal of relative abundances, but also on the centrality class, which is directly related to the QGP volume and lifetime, as well as on the relative abundances of $Λ$s and $\overlineΛ$s in the core and corona regions. The intrinsic polarizations are computed from a field theoretical approach that links the alignment of the strange quark spin with the thermal vorticity and modeling the QGP volume and lifetime using a Bjorken expansion scenario. We predict that the $Λ$ and $\overlineΛ$ global polarizations should peak at the energy range accessible to NICA and HADES.

The conceptual design of the miniBeBe detector proposed for NICA-MPD

We present the conceptual design for the miniBeBe detector proposed to be installed as a level-0 trigger for the TOF of the NICA-MPD. We discuss the design and the geometrical array of its sensitive parts, the read-out electronics as well as the mechanical support that is envisioned. We also present simulation results for p + p and Bi + Bi collisions to study its capabilities as a function of multiplicity both as a level-0 trigger for the TOF, as well as to serve as a beam-gas interaction veto and to locate the beam-beam interaction vertex.

Hyperons from Bi+Bi collisions at MPD-NICA: Preliminary analysis of production at generation, simulation and reconstruction level

An important observable to understand the properties of the matter produced in heavy-ion collisions is its strangeness content. Recent experimental results show that in semi-central collisions, the $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ global polarization show differences that increase at low energies. This behaviour has been described using a model where these particles may be produced from two distinct density zones in the collision region: the core and the corona where QGP processes and p + p like reactions, respectively, are mainly at work. Using this idea, the polarization can be influenced by the relative abundance of these particles coming from either regions. In this work we show how to test this model in the MPD experiment.

Core meets corona: a two-component source to explain Lambda and anti-Lambda global polarization in semi-central heavy-ion collisions

We compute the Lambda and anti-Lambda global polarization in semi-central heavy-ion collisions modeling the source as consisting of a high-density core and a less dense corona. We show that when more Lambdas than anti-Lambdas are produced in the corona, and this is combined with a smaller number of Lambdas coming from the core, as compared to those coming from the corona, an amplification effect for the anti-Lambda with respect to that of Lambda polarization can occur. This amplification becomes more important for lower collision energies and quantitatively accounts for the Lambda and anti-Lambda polarizations measured by the STAR beam energy scan.

Extraction of multiple parton interactions and color reconnection from forward-backward multiplicity correlations

Forward-backward multiplicity correlations have been studied in electron-positron, proton-proton and more recently in lead-lead collisions. For the proton-proton case, comparison of experimental results to different models reveals an incomplete understanding of the physical phenomenon associated with these correlations. In this work, we present a study of forward-backward multiplicity correlations in proton-proton collisions using the PYTHIA event generator, at LHC energies. A detailed analysis is presented with and without weak decays, splitting data samples into soft and hard QCD processes, and comparing the computed correlations for short and long range pseudorapidity regions. Each of these regions is analyzed accounting for the effects of color reconnection and independent multiple parton interactions. We show that a combination of these effects is required to explain the latest measurements on proton-proton data. Furthermore, is shown that from measurements of multiplicity correlations is possible to extract the average number of multiple parton interactions in the event producing these correlations, and albeit model depending, to predict the strength of these correlations, not yet measured, for higher energy collisions.

Disentangling the soft and hard components of the pp collisions using the sphero(i)city approach

A new method to extract information from the pp data is proposed. The approach is based on the use of the event structure variables: sphericity and spherocity, to split the data into enhanced soft and hard processes samples corresponding to events with large and low numbers of multi-parton interactions, respectively. The present study was developed in the framework of Pythia 8.180 for inelastic pp collisions at sqrt(s) =7 TeV. As an application of the method, a study of the identified particle transverse momentum spectra and their ratios; is presented for soft (isotropic) and hard (jetty-like) events. The flow-like effect on these observables due to multi-parton interactions and color reconnection is relevant for soft events suggesting that partons inside the jet do not feel color reconnection and its flow-like consequences.

Color reconnection and flow-like patterns in pp collisions

Increasingly, with the data collected at the LHC we are confronted with the possible existence of flow in pp collisions. In this work we show that PYTHIA 8 produces flow-like effects in events with multiple hard subcollisions due to color string formations between final partons from independent hard scatterings, the so called color reconnection. We present studies of different identified hadron observables in pp collisions at 7 TeV with the tune 4C. Studies have been done both for minimum bias and multiplicity intervals in events with and without color reconnection to isolate the flow-like effect.
