Real time evolution at finite temperatures with operator space matrix product states

We propose a method to simulate the real time evolution of one dimensional quantum many-body systems at finite temperature by expressing both the density matrices and the observables as matrix product states. This allows the calculation of expectation values and correlation functions as scalar products in operator space. The simulations of density matrices in inverse temperature and the local operators in the Heisenberg picture are independent and result in a grid of expectation values for all intermediate temperatures and times. Simulations can be performed using real arithmetics with only polynomial growth of computational resources in inverse temperature and time for integrable systems. The method is illustrated for the XXZ model and the single impurity Anderson model.

Tree tensor networks and entanglement spectra

A tree tensor network variational method is proposed to simulate quantum many-body systems with global symmetries where the optimization is reduced to individual charge configurations. A computational scheme is presented, how to extract the entanglement spectra in a bipartite splitting of a loopless tensor network across multiple links of the network, by constructing a matrix product operator for the reduced density operator and simulating its eigenstates. The entanglement spectra of 2 x L, 3 x L and 4 x L with either open or periodic boundary conditions on the rungs are studied using the presented methods, where it is found that the entanglement spectrum depends not only on the subsystem but also on the boundaries between the subsystems.

Bose Hubbard model far from equilibrium

We study the nonequilibrium steady state of the Bose Hubbard model coupled to Lindblad reservoirs, using the density matrix renormalization group in operator space. We observe a transition from a flat particle density profile in the noninteracting limit to the linear profile with onset of the interparticle interaction. Analyzing the effect of coherent pumping on the nonequilibrium steady state we find a subspace which remains unaffected by the pumping in the noninteracting limit with the protection gradually diminishing due to interparticle interaction. In the equilibrium situation with one or more symmetric reservoirs we show analytically that the steady state of the system is a product state for any interaction strength. We also provide analytical results in the noninteracting limits, using the method of the third quantization in operator space.

Universality in entanglement of quasiparticle excitations

We show that the entanglement entropy of single quasiparticle excitations of one dimensional systems exceeds the ground state entanglement entropy for log(2), if the correlation length of the system is finite. For quadratic fermion systems we show that the excess of entanglement is related to the number of quasiparticles in the excited state. This observation is confirmed by numerical examples of one dimensional quantum many-body systems, including nonintegrable. Tensor network methods to describe quasiparticle excitations are discussed.

Variational Numerical Renormalization Group: Bridging the gap between NRG and Density Matrix Renormalization Group

The numerical renormalization group (NRG) is rephrased as a variational method with the cost function given by the sum of all the energies of the effective low-energy Hamiltonian. This allows to systematically improve the spectrum obtained by NRG through sweeping. The ensuing algorithm has a lot of similarities to the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) when targeting many states, and this synergy of NRG and DMRG combines the best of both worlds and extends their applicability. We illustrate this approach with simulations of a quantum spin chain and a single impurity Anderson model (SIAM) where the accuracy of the effective eigenstates is greatly enhanced as compared to the NRG, especially in the transition to the continuum limit.

Time-dependent variational principle for quantum lattices

We develop a new algorithm based on the time-dependent variational principle applied to matrix product states to efficiently simulate the real- and imaginary time dynamics for infinite one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. This procedure: (1) is argued to be optimal; (2) does not rely on the Trotter decomposition and thus has no Trotter error; (3) explicitly preserves all symmetries and conservation laws; and (4) has low computational complexity. The algorithm is illustrated using both imaginary time and real-time examples.

Time evolution of projected entangled pair states in the single layer picture

We propose an efficient algorithm for simulating quantum many-body systems in two spatial dimensions using projected entangled pair states. This is done by approximating the environment, arising in the context of updating tensors in the process of time evolution, using a single-layered tensor network structure. This significantly reduces the computational costs and allows simulations in a larger submanifold of the Hilbert space as bounded by the bond dimension of the tensor network. We present numerical evidence for stability of the method on an antiferromagnetic isotropic Heisenberg model where good agreement is found with the available accurate results.

Monte Carlo simulation with Tensor Network States

It is demonstrated that Monte Carlo sampling can be used to efficiently extract the expectation value of projected entangled pair states with large virtual bond dimension. We use the simple update rule introduced by Xiang et al. to obtain the tensors describing the ground state wavefunction of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model and evaluate the finite size energy and staggered magnetization for square lattices with periodic boundary conditions of sizes up to L=16 and virtual bond dimensions up to D=16. The finite size magnetization errors are 0.003(2) and 0.013(2) at D=16 for a system of size L=8,16 respectively. Finite D extrapolation provides exact finite size magnetization for L=8, and reduces the magnetization error to 0.005(3) for L=16, significantly improving the previous state of the art results.

Fermionic Implementation of Projected Entangled Pair States Algorithm

We present and implement an efficient variational method to simulate two-dimensional finite size fermionic quantum systems by fermionic projected entangled pair states. The approach differs from the original one due to the fact that there is no need for an extra string-bond for contracting the tensor network. The method is tested on a bi-linear fermionic model on a square lattice for sizes up to ten by ten where good relative accuracy is achieved. Qualitatively good results are also obtained for an interacting fermionic system.

Operator Space Entanglement Entropy in XY Spin Chains

The complexity of representation of operators in quantum mechanics can be characterized by the operator space entanglement entropy (OSEE). We show that in the homogeneous Heisenberg XY spin 1/2 chains the OSEE for initial local operators grows at most logarithmically with time. The prefactor in front of the logarithm generally depends only on the number of stationary points of the quasi-particle dispersion relation and for the XY model changes from 1/3 to 2/3 exactly at the point of quantum phase transition to long-range magnetic correlations in the non-equilibrium steady state. In addition, we show that the presence of a small disorder triggers a saturation of the OSEE.

Quantum phase transition in a far from equilibrium steady state of XY spin chain

Using quantization in the Fock space of operators we compute the non-equilibrium steady state in an open Heisenberg XY spin 1/2 chain of finite but large size coupled to Markovian baths at its ends. Numerical and theoretical evidence is given for a far from equilibrium quantum phase transition with spontaneous emergence of long-range order in spin-spin correlation functions, characterized by a transition from saturation to linear growth with the size of the entanglement entropy in operator space.

Complexity of thermal states in quantum spin chains

We study quantum correlations and complexity of simulation, characterized by quantum mutual information and entanglement entropy in operator space respectively, for thermal states in critical, non-critical and quantum chaotic spin chains. A simple general relation between the two quantities is proposed. We show that in all cases mutual information and entanglement entropy saturate with the system size, whereas as a function of the inverse temperature, we find logarithmic divergences for critical cases and uniform bounds in non-critical cases. A simple efficient quasi-exact method for computation of arbitrary entropy related quantities in thermalized XY spin chains is proposed.

The two-body random spin ensemble and a new type of quantum phase transition

We study the properties of a two-body random matrix ensemble for distinguishable spins. We require the ensemble to be invariant under the group of local transformations and analyze a parametrization in terms of the group parameters and the remaining parameters associated with the "entangling" part of the interaction. We then specialize to a spin chain with nearest neighbour interactions and numerically find a new type of quantum phase transition related to the strength of a random external field i.e. the time reversal breaking one body interaction term.

Operator space entanglement entropy in transverse Ising chain

The efficiency of time dependent density matrix renormalization group methods is intrinsically connected with the rate of entanglement growth. We introduce a new measure of entanglement in the space of operators and show, for transverse Ising spin 1/2 chain, that the simulation of observables, contrary to simulation of typical pure quantum states, is efficient for initial local operators. For initial operators with a finite index in Majorana representation, the operator space entanglement entropy saturates with time to a level which is calculated analytically, while for initial operators with infinite index the growth of operator space entanglement entropy is shown to be logarithmic.

Loschmidt echoes in two-body random matrix ensembles

Fidelity decay is studied for quantum many-body systems with a dominant independent particle Hamiltonian resulting e.g. from a mean field theory with a weak two-body interaction. The diagonal terms of the interaction are included in the unperturbed Hamiltonian, while the off-diagonal terms constitute the perturbation that distorts the echo. We give the linear response solution for this problem in a random matrix framework. While the ensemble average shows no surprising behavior, we find that the typical ensemble member as represented by the median displays a very slow fidelity decay known as ``freeze''. Numerical calculations confirm this result and show, that the ground state even on average displays the freeze. This may contribute to explanation of the ``unreasonable'' success of mean field theories.

High order non-unitary split-step decomposition of unitary operators

We propose a high order numerical decomposition of exponentials of hermitean operators in terms of a product of exponentials of simple terms, following an idea which has been pioneered by M. Suzuki, however implementing it for complex coefficients. We outline a convenient fourth order formula which can be written compactly for arbitrary number of noncommuting terms in the Hamiltonian and which is superiour to the optimal formula with real coefficients, both in complexity and accuracy. We show asymptotic stability of our method for sufficiently small time step and demonstrate its efficiency and accuracy in different numerical models.
