Puzzling Isotonic Odd-Even Staggering of Charge Radii in Deformed Rare Earth Nuclei

The nuclear charge radius is a fundamental observable that encodes key aspects of nuclear structure, deformation, and pairing. Isotonic (constant neutron number) systematics in the deformed rare-earth region have long suggested that odd-$Z$ nuclei are more compact than their even-$Z$ neighbors - except for Lu, whose recommended radius appeared anomalously large relative to Yb and Hf. We report a high-precision determination of the natural-abundance-averaged Lu-Yb charge-radius difference using extreme-ultraviolet spectroscopy of highly charged Na-like and Mg-like ions, supported by high-accuracy relativistic atomic-structure calculations - a recently introduced method with the unique ability to measure inter-element charge radius differences. Combined with muonic-atom and optical isotope-shift data, our result resolves the longstanding Lu inversion anomaly and reestablishes a pronounced odd-even staggering along the $N=94$ isotonic chain. The magnitude of this staggering is unexpectedly large, far exceeding that observed in semi-magic nuclei and in deformed isotopic sequences. State-of-the-art nuclear density functional theory calculations, including quantified uncertainties, fail to reproduce this enhancement, possibly indicating missing structural effects in current models. Our work demonstrates the power of highly charged ions for precise, element-crossing charge-radius measurements and provides stringent new constraints for future theoretical and experimental studies of nuclear-size systematics.

Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Highly Charged Lu and Yb Ions for Nuclear Charge Radius Determination

We report a high-precision determination of the natural-abundance-averaged nuclear charge-radius difference between Yb and Lu using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy of highly charged ions (HCIs). By measuring the $D_1$ transition energies in Na- and Mg-like charge states of Lu and Yb confined in the Tokyo electron-beam ion trap, we extract meV-level energy shifts that are directly sensitive to nuclear-size effects. Transition-energy differences obtained from these spectra are compared with state-of-the-art relativistic many-body perturbation theory, including a new treatment of Mg-like ions. We develop a generalized framework to propagate uncertainties arising from nuclear deformation and surface diffuseness and evaluate corresponding nuclear-sensitivity coefficients. Combining Na- and Mg-like results yields mutually consistent radius differences, demonstrating the robustness of both the experimental calibration and the theoretical predictions. To determine absolute isotopic radii, we perform a generalized least-squares optimization incorporating our HCI constraints together with optical-isotope-shift data and muonic-atom results. This analysis establishes that the $^{175}$Lu charge radius is smaller than that of $^{174}$Yb, restoring the expected odd-even staggering across the $N=94$ isotonic chain. Our recommended value, $R(^{175}\text{Lu}) = 5.291(11)$ fm, reduces the uncertainty of the Lu radius by a factor of three compared with the previous electron-scattering result and resolves a long-standing anomaly in rare-earth nuclear systematics. This work demonstrates that EUV spectroscopy of HCIs provides a powerful and broadly applicable method for precision nuclear-structure studies in heavy, deformed nuclei. The techniques developed here enable future investigations of isotonic and isoelectronic sequences, including radioactive nuclides and higher-$Z$ systems.

2022 Review of Data-Driven Plasma Science

Data science and technology offer transformative tools and methods to science. This review article highlights latest development and progress in the interdisciplinary field of data-driven plasma science (DDPS). A large amount of data and machine learning algorithms go hand in hand. Most plasma data, whether experimental, observational or computational, are generated or collected by machines today. It is now becoming impractical for humans to analyze all the data manually. Therefore, it is imperative to train machines to analyze and interpret (eventually) such data as intelligently as humans but far more efficiently in quantity. Despite the recent impressive progress in applications of data science to plasma science and technology, the emerging field of DDPS is still in its infancy. Fueled by some of the most challenging problems such as fusion energy, plasma processing of materials, and fundamental understanding of the universe through observable plasma phenomena, it is expected that DDPS continues to benefit significantly from the interdisciplinary marriage between plasma science and data science into the foreseeable future.

Collisional-radiative modeling of the $5p-5s$ spectrum of W XIV - W XVI ions

The wavelength and rate of the $5p-5s$ transition of W XIV - W XVI ions have been calculated by the relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) method with the implementation of Flexible Atomic code (FAC). A reasonable collisional-radiative model (CRM) has been constructed to simulate the $5p - 5s$ transition spectrum of W XIV - W XVI ions which had been observed in electron beam ion trap (EBIT) device. The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data, and might be applied to identify the controversial spectra. The confusion on the assignment of the ionization stage are solved in the present work.

Observation of Electric Octupole Emission Lines Strongly Enhanced by an Anomalous Behavior of Cascading Contribution

We present extreme ultraviolet spectra of Ag-like W$^{27+}$ observed with an electron beam ion trap. In the spectra, the $4f_{7/2, 5/2}$ -- $5s$ transitions are identified as the first observation of spontaneous electric octupole emission. Our theoretical investigation shows that the emission line intensity is strongly and specifically enhanced at the atomic number 74 by an anomalous behavior of cascading contribution to $5s$ via $5p\leftarrow5d$.

Collisional radiative model for the M1 transition spectrum of the highly-charged W$^{54+}$ ions

A detailed-level collisional-radiative model for the M1 transition spectrum of the Ca-like W$^{54+}$ ion as observed in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) was constructed based on atomic data calculated by the relativistic configuration interaction method and distorted wave theory. The present calculated transition energy, rate and intensity of W$^{54+}$ M1 transitions are compared with previous theoretical and experimental values. The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental and theoretical data. The synthetic spectrum explained the EBIT spectrum in the 12-20 nm region, while a new possibly strong transition has been predicted to be observable with an appropriate electron beam energy. The present work provides accurate atomic data that may be used in plasma diagnostics applications.

Resonant Electron Impact Excitation of 3d levels in Fe$^{14+}$ and Fe$^{15+}$

We present laboratory spectra of the $3p$--$3d$ transitions in Fe$^{14+}$ and Fe$^{15+}$ excited with a mono-energetic electron beam. In the energy dependent spectra obtained by sweeping the electron energy, resonant excitation is confirmed as an intensity enhancement at specific electron energies. The experimental results are compared with theoretical cross sections calculated based on fully relativistic wave functions and the distorted-wave approximation. Comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results show good agreement for the resonance strength. A significant discrepancy is, however, found for the non-resonant cross section in Fe$^{14+}$. %, which can be considered as a fundamental cause of the line intensity ratio problem that has often been found in both observatory and laboratory measurements. This discrepancy is considered to be the fundamental cause of the previously reported inconsistency of the model with the observed intensity ratio between the $^3\!P_2$ -- $^3\!D_3$ and $^1\!P_1$ -- $^1\!D_2$ transitions.

Properties of Kilonovae from Dynamical and Post-Merger Ejecta of Neutron Star Mergers

Ejected material from neutron star mergers give rise to electromagnetic emission powered by radioactive decays of r-process nuclei, which is so called kilonova or macronova. While properties of the emission are largely affected by opacities in the ejected material, available atomic data for r-process elements are still limited. We perform atomic structure calculations for r-process elements: Se (Z=34), Ru (Z=44), Te (Z=52), Ba (Z=56), Nd (Z=60), and Er (Z=68). We confirm that the opacities from bound-bound transitions of open f-shell, Lanthanide elements (Nd and Er) are higher than those of the other elements over a wide wavelength range. The opacities of open s-shell (Ba), p-shell (Se and Te), and d-shell (Ru) elements are lower than those of open f-shell elements and their transitions are concentrated in the ultraviolet wavelengths. We show that the optical brightness can be different by >2 mag depending on the element abundances in the ejecta such that post-merger, Lanthanide-free ejecta produce brighter and bluer optical emission. Such blue emission from post-merger ejecta can be observed from the polar directions if the mass of the preceding dynamical ejecta in these regions is small. For the ejecta mass of 0.01 Msun, observed magnitudes of the blue emission will reach 21.0 mag (100 Mpc) and 22.5 mag (200 Mpc) in g and r bands within a few days after the merger, which are detectable with 1m or 2m-class telescopes.

Theoretical investigation on the soft X-ray spectrum of the highly-charged W$^{54+}$ ions

A detailed level collisional-radiative model of the E1 transition spectrum of Ca-like W$^{54+}$ ion has been constructed. All the necessary atomic data has been calculated by relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) method with the implementation of Flexible Atomic Code (FAC). The results are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental and previous theoretical data. The synthetic spectrum has explained the EBIT spectrum in 29.5-32.5 Å,, while several new strong transitions has been proposed to be observed in 18.5-19.6 Å, for the future EBIT experiment with electron density $n_e$ = $10^{12}$ cm$^{-3}$ and electron beam energy $E_e$ = 18.2 keV.

Correlation, Breit and Quantum Electrodynamics effects on energy level and transition properties of W$^{54+}$ ion

The electron correlation effects and Breit interaction as well as Quantum Electro-Dynamics (QED) effects were expected to have important contribution to the energy level and transition properties of heavy highly charged ions. The ground states [Ne]$3s^{2}3p^{6}3d^{2}$ and first excited states [Ne]3s$^{2}3p^{5}3d^{3}$ of W$^{54+}$ ion have been studied by using Multi-Configuration Dirac-Fock method with the implementation of Grasp2K package. A restricted active space was employed to investigate the correlation contribution from different models. The Breit interaction and QED effects were taken into account in the relativistic configuration interaction calculation with the converged wavefunction. It is found that the correlation contribution from 3s and 3p orbital have important contribution to the energy level, transition wavelength and probability of the ground and the first excited state of W$^{54+}$ ion.

E1, M1, E2 transition energies and probabilities of W$^{54+}$ ions

A comprehensive theoretical study of the E1, M1, E2 transitions of Ca-like tungsten ions is presented. Using multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) method with a restricted active space treatment, the wavelengths and probabilities of the M1 and E2 transitions between the multiplets of the ground state configuration ([Ne]3s$^{2}$3p$^{6}$3d$^{2}$) and of the E1 transitions between [Ne]3s$^{2}$3p$^{5}$3d$^{3}$ and [Ne]3s$^{2}$3p$^{6}$3d$^{2}$ have been calculated. The results are in reasonable agreement with available experimental data. The present E1 and M1 calculations are compared with previous theoretical values. For E2 transitions, the importance of electron correlation from 3s and 3p orbitals is pointed out. Several strong E1 transitions are predicted, which have potential advantage for plasma diagnostics.

Direct observation of the M1 transition between the ground state fine structure splitting of W VIII

We present direct observation of the M1 transition between the fine structure splitting in the 4f13 5s2 5p6 2F ground state of W VIII. The spectroscopic data of few-times ionized tungsten ions are important for the future ITER diagnostics, but there is a serious lack of data. The present study is part of an ongoing effort to solve this lack. Emission from the tungsten ions produced and trapped in a compact electron beam ion trap is observed with a Czerny-Turner visible spectrometer. Spectra in the EUV range are also observed at the same time to help the identification of the previously-unreported visible lines. The observed wavelength 574.47 pm 0.03 nm (air), which corresponds to the fine structure splitting of 17402.5 pm 0.9 cm-1, shows reasonable agreement with the previously reported value 17410 pm 5 cm-1 obtained indirectly through the analysis of EUV spectra [Ryabtsev et al., Atoms 3 (2015) 273].

Collisional-Radiative Model for the visible spectrum of $W^{26+}$ ions

Plasma diagnostics in magnetic confinement fusion plasmas by using visible spectrum strongly depends on the knowledge of fundamental atomic properties. A detailed collisional-radiative model of W$^{26+}$ ions has been constructed by considering radiative and electron excitation processes, in which the necessary atomic data had been calculated by relativistic configuration interaction method with the implementation of Flexible Atomic Code. The visible spectrum observed at an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) in Shanghai in the range of 332 nm to 392 nm was reproduced by present calculations. Some transition pairs of which the intensity ratio are sensitive to the electron density were selected as potential candidate of plasma diagnostics. Their electron density dependence are theoretically evaluated for the cases of EBIT plasmas and magnetic confinement fusion plasmas.

EUV and Visible Spectroscopy of Promethiumlike Heavy Ions

We present extreme ultraviolet and visible spectra of promethiumlike tungsten and gold obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Although the contributions from a few charge states are involved in the spectra, the charge state of the ion assigned to the observed lines is definitely identified by the time-of-flight analysis of the ions performed at the same time with the spectroscopic measurements. Experimental results are compared with collisional-radiative model calculations as well as previous experimental and theoretical studies.

Observation and numerical modeling of chromospheric evaporation during the impulsive phase of a solar flare

We have studied the chromospheric evaporation flow during the impulsive phase of the flare by using the Hinode/EIS observation and 1D hydrodynamic numerical simulation coupled to the time-dependent ionization. The observation clearly shows that the strong redshift can be observed at the base of the flaring loop only during the impulsive phase. We performed two different numerical simulations to reproduce the strong downflows in FeXII and FeXV during the impulsive phase. By changing the thermal conduction coefficient, we carried out the numerical calculation of chromospheric evaporation in the thermal conduction dominant regime (conductivity coefficient kappa0 = classical value) and the enthalpy flux dominant regime (kappa0 = 0.1 x classical value). The chromospheric evaporation calculation in the enthalpy flux dominant regime could reproduce the strong redshift at the base of the flare during the impulsive phase. This result might indicate that the thermal conduction can be strongly suppressed in some cases of flare. We also find that time-dependent ionization effect is importance to reproduce the strong downflows in Fe XII and Fe XV.

Metal Enrichment of Ly alpha Clouds and Intergalactic Medium

We have examined the metal enrichment of the intergalactic medium (IGM) based on a galactic wind model. A galactic wind driven by supernovae brings metallic gas to the IGM but not so far beyond the gravitational potential. The expanding velocity of the outflow depends on the star formation timescale. Examining 3D calculation for the IGM in CDM model, we find that only 10 % region has metallicity larger than $10^{-2}Z_{\odot}$ at $z=3$. Wide range of the IGM metallicity produces variety of CIV column densities for a fixed HI column density.

UV and X-ray Spectral Lines of FeXXIII Ion for Plasma Diagnostics

We have calculated X-ray and UV spectra of Be-like Fe (FeXXIII) ion in collisional-radiative model including all fine-structure transitions among the 2s^2, 2s2p, 2p^2, 2snl, and 2pnl levels where n=3 and 4, adopting data for the collision strengths by Zhang & Sampson (1992) and by Sampson, Goett, & Clark (1984). Some line intensity ratios can be used for the temperature diagnostics. We show 5 ratios in UV region and 9 ratios in X-ray region as a function of electron temperature and density at 0.3keV < T_e < 10keV and $n_e = 1 - 10^{25} cm^{-3}$. The effect of cascade in these line ratios and in the level population densities are discussed.
