Clustered families and applications to Lang-type conjectures

We introduce and classify 1-clustered families of linear spaces in the Grassmannian $\mathbb{G}(k-1,n)$ and give applications to Lang-type conjectures. Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a very general hypersurface of degree $d$. Let $Z_L$ be the locus of points contained in a line of $X$. Let $Z_2$ be the locus of points on $X$ that are swept out by lines that meet $X$ in at most $2$ points. We prove that 1) If $d \geq \frac{3n+2}{2}$, then $X$ is algebraically hyperbolic outside $Z_L$. 2) If $d \geq \frac{3n}{2}$, $X$ contains lines but no other rational curves 3) If $d \geq \frac{3n+3}{2}$, then the only points on $X$ that are rationally Chow zero equivalent to points other than themselves are contained in $Z_2$. 4) If $d \geq \frac{3n+2}{2}$ and a relative Green-Griffiths-Lang Conjecture holds, then the exceptional locus for $X$ is contained in $Z_2$.

The cohomology of general tensor products of vector bundles on the projective plane

Computing the cohomology of the tensor product of two vector bundles is central in the study of their moduli spaces and in applications to representation theory, combinatorics and physics. These computations play a fundamental role in the construction of Brill-Noether loci, birational geometry and $S$-duality. Using recent advances in the Minimal Model Program for moduli spaces of sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^2$, we compute the cohomology of the tensor product of general semistable bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$. This solves a natural higher rank generalization of the polynomial interpolation problem. More precisely, let $v$ and $w$ be two Chern characters of stable bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$ and assume that $w$ is sufficiently divisible depending on $v$. Let $V \in M(v)$ and $W \in M(w)$ be two general stable bundles. We fully compute the cohomology of $V \otimes W$. In particular, we show that if $W$ is exceptional, then $V \otimes W$ has at most one nonzero cohomology group determined by the slope and the Euler characteristic, generalizing foundational results of Drézet, Göttsche and Hirschowitz. We characterize the invariants of effective Brill-Noether divisors on $M(v)$. We also characterize when $V\otimes W$ is globally generated. Our computation is canonical given the birational geometry of the moduli space, suggesting a roadmap for tackling analogous problems on other surfaces.

The cohomology of the general stable sheaf on a K3 surface

Let $X$ be a K3 surface with Picard group $\mathrm{Pic}(X)\cong\mathbb{Z} H$ such that $H^2=2n$. Let $M_{H}(\mathbf{v})$ be the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on $X$ with Mukai vector $\mathbf{v}$. We say that $\mathbf{v}$ satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf in $M_{H}(\mathbf{v})$ has at most one nonzero cohomology group. We show that given any rank $r \geq 2$, there are only finitely many Mukai vectors of rank $r$ on K3 surfaces of Picard rank one where weak Brill-Noether fails. We give an algorithm for finding the potential counterexamples and classify all such counterexamples up to rank 20 explicitly. Moreover, in each of these cases we calculate the cohomology of the general sheaf. Given $r$, we give sharp bounds on $n$, $d$, and $a$ that guarantee that $\mathbf{v}=(r,dH,a)$ satisfies weak Brill-Noether. As a corollary, we obtain another proof of the classification of Ulrich bundles on K3 surfaces of Picard rank one. In addition, we discuss the question of when the general sheaf in $M_H(\mathbf{v})$ is globally generated. Our techniques make crucial use of Bridgeland stability conditions.

Very free rational curves in Fano varieties

Let $X$ be a projective variety and let $C$ be a rational normal curve on $X$. We compute the normal bundle of $C$ in a general complete intersection of hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree in $X$. As a result, we establish the separable rational connectedness of a large class of varieties, including general Fano complete intersections of hypersurfaces of degree at least three in flag varieties, in arbitrary characteristic. In addition, we give a new way of computing the normal bundle of certain rational curves in products of varieties in terms of their restricted tangent bundles and normal bundles on each factor.

Disconnected moduli spaces of stable bundles on surfaces

We use hypersurfaces containing unexpected linear spaces to construct interesting vector bundles on complete intersection surfaces in projective space. We discover examples of moduli spaces of rank 2 stable bundles on surfaces of Picard rank one with arbitrarily many connected components.

Algebraic hyperbolicity of very general surfaces

Recently, Haase and Ilten initiated the study of classifying algebraically hyperbolic surfaces in toric threefolds. We complete this classification for $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{P}^2 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, $\mathbb{F}_e \times \mathbb{P}^1$ and the blowup of $\mathbb{P}^3$ at a point, augmenting our earlier work on $\mathbb{P}^3$. In the process, we codify several different techniques for proving algebraic hyperbolicity, allowing us to prove similar results for hypersurface in any variety admitting a group action with dense orbit.

Existence of semistable sheaves on Hirzebruch surfaces

Let $X$ be a Hirzebruch surface, and let $H$ be any ample divisor. In this paper, we algorithmically determine when the moduli space of semistable sheaves $M_{X,H}(r,c_1,c_2)$ is nonempty. Our algorithm relies on certain stacks of prioritary sheaves. We first solve the existence problem for these stacks and then algorithmically determine the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of the general sheaf in the stack. In particular, semistable sheaves exist if and only if the Harder-Narasimhan filtration has length one. We then study sharp Bogomolov inequalities $Δ\geq δ_H(c_1/r)$ for the discriminants of stable sheaves which take the polarization and slope into account; these inequalities essentially completely describe the characters of stable sheaves. The function $δ_H(c_1/r)$ can be computed to arbitrary precision by a limiting procedure. In the case of an anticanonically polarized del Pezzo surface, exceptional bundles are always stable and $δ_H(c_1/r)$ is computed by exceptional bundles. More generally, we show that for an arbitrary polarization there are further necessary conditions for the existence of stable sheaves beyond those provided by stable exceptional bundles. We compute $δ_H(c_1/r)$ exactly in some of these cases. Finally, solutions to the existence problem have immediate applications to the birational geometry of moduli spaces of sheaves.

Effective bounds on ampleness of cotangent bundles

We prove that a general complete intersection of dimension $n$, codimension $c$ and type $d_1, \dots, d_c$ in $\mathbb{P}^N$ has ample cotangent bundle if $c \geq 2n-2$ and the $d_i$'s are all greater than a bound that is $O(1)$ in $N$ and quadratic in $n$. This degree bound substantially improves the currently best-known super-exponential bound in $N$ by Deng, although our result does not address the case $n \leq c < 2n-2$.

Brill-Noether theorems and globally generated vector bundles on Hirzebruch surfaces

In this paper, we show that the cohomology of a general stable bundle on a Hirzebruch surface is determined by the Euler characteristic provided that the first Chern class satisfies necessary intersection conditions. More generally, we compute the Betti numbers of a general stable bundle. We also show that a general stable bundle on a Hirzebruch surface has a special resolution generalizing the Gaeta resolution on the projective plane. As a consequence of these results, we classify Chern characters such that the general stable bundle is globally generated.

Algebraic hyperbolicity of the very general quintic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$

We prove that a curve of degree $dk$ on a very general surface of degree $d \geq 5$ in $\mathbb{P}^3$ has geometric genus at least $\frac{dk(d-5)+k}{2} + 1$. This improves bounds given by G. Xu. As a corollary, we conclude that the very general quintic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is algebraically hyperbolic.

Normal bundles of rational curves in projective space

Let $b_{\bullet}$ be a sequence of integers $1 < b_1 \leq b_2 \leq \cdots \leq b_{n-1}$. Let $M(b_{\bullet})$ be the space parameterizing nondegenerate, rational curves of degree $e$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with ordinary singularities such that the normal bundle has the splitting type $\bigoplus_{i=1}^{n-1}\mathcal{O}(e+b_i)$. When $n=3$, celebrated results of Eisenbud, Van de Ven, Ghione and Sacchiero show that $M(b_{\bullet})$ is irreducible of the expected dimension. We show that when $n \geq 5$, these loci are generally reducible with components of higher than the expected dimension. We give examples where the number of components grows linearly with $n$. These generalize an example of Alzati and Re.

Normal bundles of rational curves on complete intersections

Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a general Fano complete intersection of type $(d_1,\dots, d_k)$. If at least one $d_i$ is greater than $2$, we show that $X$ contains rational curves of degree $e \leq n$ with balanced normal bundle. If all $d_i$ are $2$ and $n\geq 2k+1$, we show that $X$ contains rational curves of degree $e \leq n-1$ with balanced normal bundle. As an application, we prove a stronger version of the theorem of Z. Tian \cite{Tian}, Q. Chen and Y. Zhu \cite{ChenZhu} that $X$ is separably rationally connected by exhibiting very free rational curves in $X$ of optimal degrees.

Weak Brill-Noether for rational surfaces

A moduli space of sheaves satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf in the moduli space has no cohomology. Goettsche and Hirschowitz prove that on the projective plane every moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves of rank at least two and Euler characteristic zero satisfies weak Brill-Noether. In this paper, we give sufficient conditions for weak Brill-Noether to hold on rational surfaces. We completely characterize Chern characters on Hirzebruch surfaces for which weak Brill-Noether holds. We also prove that on a del Pezzo surface of degree at least 4 weak Brill-Noether holds if the first Chern class is nef.

Effective cones of cycles on blow-ups of projective space

In this paper, we study the cones of higher codimension (pseudo)effective cycles on point blow-ups of projective space. We determine bounds on the number of points for which these cones are generated by the classes of linear cycles, and for which these cones are finitely generated. Surprisingly, we discover that for (very) general points, the higher codimension cones behave better than the cones of divisors. For example, for the blow-up $X_r^n$ of $\mathbb P^n$, $n>4$, at $r$ very general points, the cone of divisors is not finitely generated as soon as $r> n+3$, whereas the cone of curves is generated by the classes of lines if $r \leq 2^n$. In fact, if $X_r^n$ is a Mori Dream Space then all the effective cones of cycles on $X_r^n$ are finitely generated.

The nef cone of the moduli space of sheaves and strong Bogomolov inequalities

Let (X,H) be a polarized, smooth, complex projective surface, and let v be a Chern character on X with positive rank and sufficiently large discriminant. In this paper, we compute the Gieseker wall for v in a slice of the stability manifold of X. We construct explicit curves parameterizing non-isomorphic Gieseker stable sheaves that become S-equivalent along the wall. As a corollary, we conclude that if there are no strictly semistable sheaves of character v, the Bayer-Macri divisor associated to the wall is a boundary nef divisor on the moduli space of sheaves M_H(v). We recover previous results for the projective plane and K3 surfaces, and illustrate applications to higher Picard rank surfaces with an example on a quadric surface.

Equivariant Ulrich bundles on flag varieties

In this paper, we study equivariant vector bundles on partial flag varieties arising from Schur functors. We show that a partial flag variety with three or more steps does not admit an Ulrich bundle of this form with respect to the minimal ample class. We classify Ulrich bundles of this form on two-step flag varieties F(2,n;n+1), F(2,n;n+2), F(k,k+1;n), and F(k,k+2;n). We give a conjectural description of the two-step flag varieties which admit such Ulrich bundles. Our results provide counterexamples to conjectures by Costa and Miro-Roig.

Fano manifolds of index n-2 and the cone conjecture

The Morrison--Kawamata Cone Conjecture predicts that the action of the automorphism group on the effective nef cone and the action of the pseudo-automorphism group on the effective movable cone of a klt Calabi-Yau pair have rational, polyhedral fundamental domains. In a previous paper, we proved the conjecture for certain blowups of Fano manifolds of index n-1. In this paper, we consider the Morrison--Kawamata conjecture for blowups of Fano manifolds of index n-2.
