A novel accelerating structure based on a tapered parallel-plate waveguide with an integrated dielectric terahertz-driven accelerator

We present a novel dielectric terahertz-driven accelerator (DTA) that integrates a dual-pillar grating structure within a tapered parallel-plate waveguide (TPPWG). This compact setup enables efficient particle acceleration using multi-cycle, narrowband terahertz (THz) pulses. The TPPWG serves a dual role: it enhances the THz field via geometric tapering and delivers it to the dielectric structure by efficient coupling. Experimental validation of the THz field inside the waveguide is conducted using electro-optic sampling. Optimization of waveguide parameters through time-domain simulations reveals a sixfold peak electric field amplification at the end of the waveguide. The dielectric accelerator is tailored for maximum acceleration by adjusting the DTA pillar radius and vacuum channel gap for relativistic electron beams. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations demonstrate that the structure supports net acceleration with gradients up to 120 MeV per m for 0.1 GV per m field strengths, and can accommodate bunch charges up to 10 pC with minimal degradation. Energy spread evolution and beam dynamics are discussed in detail, including the role of phase slippage and bunch length. This work establishes the DTA-integrated TPPWG as a compact and scalable platform for high-gradient THz-driven acceleration, combining simple fabrication and design, strong field enhancement, and compatibility with existing electron sources. It opens new pathways toward practical, tabletop accelerators for scientific and industrial applications.

Comparative analysis of optical rectification-based multicycle terahertz pulse generation techniques

Numerical investigations of multicycle terahertz pulse generation based on wafer stack and tilted pulse front pumped lithium niobate setups concerning the conversion efficiency and the resulting temporal shape and spectrum were performed. Pumping by Fourier-limited-, chirped-, and intensity-modulated pulses, as well as pulse sequences was considered. Wafer stacks give a maximum efficiency when the pump pulse duration is 0.243 times the temporal period of the generated THz pulse. In wafer stacks, increasing the number of pulses in a sequence drastically increases the efficiency. A five-period wafer stack tailored for a 0.15 THz frequency achieves a maximum efficiency of almost 0.1% when pumped by a single, 1.5 ps pulse with an intensity of 100 GW$^2$/cm$^2$, and 0.3% when pumped by a sequence of five pulses. In a similar wafer stack of 10 periods, the efficiency with the same pulse sequence reaches 0.7%. For a large pump pulse number, the efficiency increase approaches a factor equal to the number of wafer pairs. For a given number of THz cycles, the highest efficiency is obtained when the number of wafer stack periods and pump pulses are equal to half the number of cycles. For relatively small cycle numbers, tilted-pump-front setups were found to yield the highest conversion efficiencies.

Charge separation by standing waves of strongly focused single-cycle terahertz pulses for particle acceleration

Electron and ion acceleration in laser beam driven gas and solid-state plasmas are well-known and thoroughly investigated. Here we propose and numerically investigate an ion acceleration scheme using the Coulomb explosion of ion bunches created by separating electron and ion bunches from gas plasma by the standing wave of counter-propagating THz/laser pulse pair(s). The low density and the supposed only few-cycle long THz/laser pulses ensure that much less complicated mechanisms play a role in the separation and acceleration processes, resulting in more predictable outcomes than for single-laser-beam-driven solid-state plasmas. The charge separation is investigated using the EPOCH PIC code. After the charge separation, the ion dynamics ar followed by the GPT code. Calculations predict the generation of relativistic electron bunches and ion bunches with sub-MeV average energy, and with distribution suitable for very efficient use of the accelerated ions in ultrashort-pulse neutron sources.

Numerical Study on the Potential Enhancement of Organic Terahertz Sources through Tilted Pulse Front Pumping

Organic crystals offer promising potential for THz generation, but face limitations in wavelength tunability and damage threshold. By applying tilted pulse front pumping to organic crystals an additional degree of freedom is introduced into the pumping conditions enabling a wider range of pumping wavelengths without compromising phase matching. Additionally, the lifespan of organic materials can be extended by using longer pumping wavelength and eliminate lower-order multi-photon absorption, allowing for higher pumping intensity without significant free carrier absorption, thus increasing the damage threshold. Simulations predict significant improvement for four out of six investigated crystals when tilted pulse front pumping is applied. By using volume phase holographic grating one can achieve pulse front tilt in organic crystals in collinear geometry with high diffraction efficiency. Design parameters are also presented.

Electromagnetic Field Distribution and Divergence-Dependence of a Radially Polarized Gaussian Vector Beam Focused by a Parabolic Mirror

In this work, we derived formulae concerning the electric and magnetic field characteristics of a focused radially polarized Gaussian vector beam. Such a beam is consistent with Maxwell's equations contrary to plane waves having uniform field distribution. Hence a realistic picture is provided of the focused field distributions having importance before designing applications such as particle acceleration. For focusing a perfectly reflecting large numerical aperture on-axis parabolic mirror was supposed to have practical importance. The computation technique was based on the Stratton-Chu vector diffraction method. We pointed out that this offers a unique opportunity in the long wavelength regime, where the Richards-Wolf theory becomes unreliable. In the terahertz frequency range longitudinal electric field component with an amplitude of $\sim$160 $\text{MV}/\text{cm}$ was predicted, which is ideal for particle acceleration applications. Based on the field characteristics experienced as a function of the focusing angle, the possibility of using a paraboloid ring for particle acceleration was suggested. Its advantage is reflected not only in the strong available longitudinal field but also in ensuring the unobstructed transfer of particles as a practical point of view. The axial and radial distributions of the longitudinal electric field component for different incident beam divergences were analyzed in detail. It was found that the shift of the physical focus relative to the geometrical focus along the longitudinal direction shows a linear dependence on the divergence. The effect of the divergence angle on the field enhancement factor was also studied.

Tilted-pulse-front schemes for terahertz generation

High energy single- to few-cycle terahertz pulses enable the exploration of the frontier of science, such as electron acceleration, strong-field physics, and spectroscopy. One important method of generating such terahertz pulses is to use the tilted-pulse-front (TPF) technique. However, due to the non-collinear phase-matching, the large angular dispersion leads to a spatial and temporal break-up of the optical pump, limiting the terahertz generation efficiency and reducing the few-cycle character of the generated terahertz fields. To reduce the effects caused by angular dispersion, multiple schemes with discrete pulse-front-tilt have been suggested. We propose a terahertz generation scheme, where a spatio-temporally chirped (STC) pump pulse is utilized. With our 2D+1 numerical model, we perform a systematic comparative study of the conventional TPF scheme, three discrete TPF schemes, and the STC scheme. This model predicts smaller optimal interaction length and significantly smaller conversion efficiency compared to simple 1D models. We conclude that the STC scheme delivers spatially homogeneous few-cycle terahertz pulses with the highest conversion efficiency. Additionally, given a short interaction length, the discrete TPF schemes cannot outperform the continuous ones. In general, this work gives guidance to choose the most appropriate setup for a given terahertz experiment

Demonstration of a Tilted-Pulse-Front Pumped Plane-Parallel Slab Terahertz Source

A new type of tilted-pulse-front pumped terahertz (THz) source has been demonstrated, which is based on a lithium niobate plane-parallel slab with an echelon structure on its input surface. Single-cycle pulses of 1 microjoule energy and 0.30 THz central frequency have been generated with 0.05% efficiency from such a source. One order-of-magnitude increase in efficiency is expected by pumping a cryogenically cooled echelon of increased size and thickness with a Ti:sapphire laser. The use of a plane-parallel nonlinear optical crystal slab enables straightforward scaling to high THz pulse energies and to produce a symmetric THz beam with uniform pulse shape for good focusability and high field strength.

Single-cycle attosecond pulses by Thomson backscattering of terahertz pulses

The generation of single-cycle attosecond pulses based on Thomson scattering of terahertz (THz) pulses is proposed. In the scheme, a high-quality relativistic electron beam produced by a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator (LPWA), is sent through suitable magnetic devices to produce ultrathin electron layers for coherent Thomson backscattering of intense THz pulses. According to numerical simulations, single-cycle attosecond pulse generation is possible with up to 1 nJ energy. The waveform of the attosecond pulses closely resembles that of the THz pulses. This allows for a flexible waveform control of attosecond pulses.

Quasi-phase-matching high-harmonic radiation using chirped THz pulses

High-order harmonic generation in the presence of a chirped THz pulse is investigated numerically with a complete 3D non-adiabatic model. The assisting THz pulse illuminates the HHG gas cell laterally inducing quasi-phase-matching. We demonstrate that it is possible to compensate the phase mismatch during propagation and extend the macroscopic cutoff of a propagated strong IR pulse to the single-dipole cutoff. We obtain two orders of magnitude increase in the harmonic efficiency of cutoff harmonics ($\approx$170 eV) using a THz pulse of constant wavelength, and a further factor of 3 enhancement when a chirped THz pulse is used.

Towards generation of mJ-level ultrashort THz pulses by optical rectification

Optical rectification of ultrashort laser pulses in LiNbO3 by tilted-pulse-front excitation is a powerful way to generate near single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses. Motivated by various applications, calculations were carried out to optimize the THz peak electric field strength. The results predict THz output with peak electric field strength on the MV/cm level in the 0.3-1.5 THz frequency range by using optimal pump pulse duration of about 500 fs, optimal crystal length, and cryogenic temperatures for reducing THz absorption in LiNbO3. The THz electric field strength can be increased further to tens of MV/cm by focusing. Using optimal conditions together with the contact grating technique THz pulses with 100 MV/cm field strength and energies on the tens-of-mJ scale are feasible.
