Topological and Geometric Perspectives on Homomorphism Indistinguishability

Two graphs $G$ and $H$ are homomorphism indistinguishable over a graph class $\mathcal{F}$ if, for every graph $F \in \mathcal{F}$, the number of homomorphisms from $F$ to $G$ is equal to the number of homomorphisms from $F$ to $H$. Lovász (Acta Mathematica Academiae Scientiarum Hungarica, 1967) showed that two graphs are isomorphic if, and only if, they are homomorphism indistinguishable over all graphs. Subsequently, homomorphism indistinguishability relations of a long list of natural graph classes have been equated with natural graph isomorphism relaxations. Given the wealth of such results, Atserias, Kolaitis, & Wu (LICS 2021) asked for an axiomatic characterisation of homomorphism indistinguishability relations. By exhibiting topological and geometric structure associated with homomorphism indistinguishability, we derive such an axiomatic characterisation. Here, a central ingredient is a novel characterisation of graph parameters of the form $\hom(F, \star)$ for some graph $F$ alternative to a previous result of Lovász & Schrijver (JCTA 2010). Moreover, we investigate the topology of homomorphism indistinguishability and discuss repercussions for the Ulam--Kelly Reconstruction Conjecture.

Compact-Open Dualities for Stably Continuous Posets

We organize and generalize several dualities involving continuous posets. The main theorem reads $\mathbf{St}_α\mathbf{Inf}_{α'}\mathbf{Cont}_{β'}\mathbf{Sup}_β\simeq (\mathbf{St}_β\mathbf{Inf}_{β'}\mathbf{Cont}_{α'}\mathbf{Sup}_α)^{\mathrm{op}}$, where $\mathbf{St}$, $\mathbf{Inf}$, $\mathbf{Cont}$ and $\mathbf{Sup}$ refer to stability, completeness, continuity and cocompleteness. The indices are "ladders", i.e., classes of sets $λ$ stable under dependent sums and quotients, with associated notions of $λ$-small infima and $λ$-filtered suprema. In the second half of the paper, we discuss algebraicity, proximity lattices and perfect maps.

The Constant Domain Axiom in Toposes

Constant domain intuitionistic logic admits a complete semantics in presheaf toposes, by interpreting sorts as constant presheaves and predicates as arbitrary sub-presheaves. The goal of this note is to point out how this fits in topos theory, replacing constant presheaves with objects that are covert and Hausdorff when considered as discrete locales. We call these objects "CD" and we show that they form a Boolean pretopos in any topos.

Toposes with enough points as categories of étale spaces

We extend Makkai duality between coherent toposes and ultracategories to a duality between toposes with enough points and ultraconvergence spaces. Our proof generalizes and simplifies Makkai's original proof. Our main result can also be seen as an extension to ionads of Barr's equivalence between topological spaces and relational modules for the ultrafilter monad. In view of the correspondence between toposes and geometric theories, we obtain a strong conceptual completeness theorem, in the sense of Makkai, for geometric theories with enough Set-models. The same result has recently been obtained independently by Saadia (arXiv:2506.23935) and by Hamad (arXiv:2507.07922). Both of their proofs rely on groupoid representations of toposes, which our proof here does not assume.

A Criterion for Categories on which every Grothendieck Topology is Rigid

Let $\mathbf{C}$ be a Cauchy-complete category. The subtoposes of $[\mathbf{C}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathbf{Set}]$ are sometimes all of the form $[\mathbf{D}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathbf{Set}]$ where $\mathbf{D}$ is a full subcategory of $\mathbf{C}$. This is the case for instance when $\mathbf{C}$ is finite, an Artinian poset, or the simplex category. In order to unify these situations, we characterize the small categories $\mathbf{C}$ such that for every $X \in \mathbf{C}$, every subtopos of $[\mathbf{C}^{\mathrm{op}},\mathbf{Set}]$ is induced by a subcategory of $\mathbf{C}_{/X}$. We provide two equivalent characterizations. The first one uses a two-player game, and the second one combines two "local" properties of $\mathbf{C}$ involving respectively the poset reflections of its slices and its endomorphism monoids.

Poset-enriched pretoposes and compact ordered spaces

We provide a characterisation of the category $\mathsf{KOrd}$ of Nachbin's compact ordered spaces as a poset-enriched category. Up to equivalence, $\mathsf{KOrd}$ is the only non-degenerate poset-enriched pretopos whose terminal object is a (discrete) generator and in which every object is covered by an order-filtral object. Order-filtral objects satisfy an appropriate form of compactness and separation. Throughout, we make extensive use of the internal language of poset-enriched pretoposes.

A Completeness Theorem for Topological Doctrines

We extend logical categories with fiberwise interior and closure operators so as to obtain an embedding theorem into powers of the category of topological spaces. The required axioms, besides the Kuratowski closure axioms, are a `product independence' and a `loop contraction' principle.

Atomic Toposes with Co-Well-Founded Categories of Atoms

The atoms of the Schanuel topos can be described as the pairs $(n,G)$ where $n$ is a finite set and $G$ is a subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}(n)$. We give a general criterion on an atomic site ensuring that the atoms of the topos of sheaves on that site can be described in a similar fashion. We deduce that these toposes are locally finitely presentable. By applying this to the Malitz-Gregory atomic topos, we obtain a counter-example to the conjecture that every locally finitely presentable topos has enough points. We also work out a combinatorial property satisfied exactly when the sheaves for the atomic topology are the pullback-preserving functors. In this case, the category of atoms is particularly simple to describe.

First-Order Modal Logic via Logical Categories

We extend the logical categories framework to first order modal logic. In our modal categories, modal operators are applied directly to subobjects and interact with the background factorization system. We prove a Joyal-style representation theorem into relational structures formalizing a `counterpart' notion. We investigate saturation conditions related to definability questions and we enrich our framework with quotients and disjoint sums, thus leading to the notion of a modal (quasi) pretopos. We finally show how to build syntactic categories out of first order modal theories.

On duality and model theory for polyadic spaces

This paper is a study of first-order coherent logic from the point of view of duality and categorical logic. We prove a duality theorem between coherent hyperdoctrines and open polyadic Priestley spaces, which we subsequently apply to prove completeness, omitting types, and Craig interpolation theorems for coherent or intuitionistic logic. Our approach emphasizes the role of interpolation and openness properties, and allows for a modular, syntax-free treatment of these model-theoretic results. As further applications of the same method, we prove completeness theorems for constant domain and Gödel-Dummett intuitionistic predicate logics.
