Lorentz--Epstein surfaces and a Liouville action for positive curves

We investigate and define in this paper, in the context of the correspondence between anti-de Sitter $3$-space and $(1,1)$-conformal metrics, the analogs of $\cW$-volume, Epstein surfaces, and Liouville action. These notions were well-studied in the correspondence between $3d$-hyperbolic manifolds and $2d$ conformal metrics. We apply our construction to positive curves in flag manifolds equipped with a positive structure to obtain invariants of these curves that are finite in the case of piecewise circles.

Minimal surfaces with negative curvature in large dimensional spheres

In this note, we answer positively a question of Yau by proving the existence of closed minimal surfaces with negative induced curvature in any sphere of large dimension. The proof follows the strategy of Song, applying it to closed Riemann surfaces with large automorphism groups, and obtaining almost hyperbolic minimal surfaces.

Higgs bundle, isomonodromic leaves and minimal surfaces

In this paper we give a gauge theoretic construction of the joint moduli space of stable G-Higgs bundles on closed Riemann surfaces, where the Riemann surface structure is allowed to vary in the Teichmüller space of the underlying smooth surface. This joint moduli space has many interesting structures that are preserved by the mapping class group of the surface. We describe a surprising relationship between four key objects: the isomonodromic foliation, a canonical hermitian form arising from the Atiyah-Bott-Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety, a canonical holomorphic form which vertically lifts vector fields on Teichmüller space, and the energy function for equivariant harmonic maps. One consequence of this work is the construction of pseudo-Kähler metrics on many examples of components of character varieties which include rank two higher Teichmüller spaces. This recovers some of the recent work on the subject by various authors.

On complete maximal submanifolds in pseudo-hyperbolic space

We provide a full classification of complete maximal $p$-dimensional spacelike submanifolds in the pseudo-hyperbolic space $\mathbf{H}^{p,q}$, and we study its applications to Teichmüller theory and to the theory of Anosov representations of hyperbolic groups in $\mathsf{PO}(p,q+1)$.

Holomorphic curves in the 6-pseudosphere and cyclic surfaces

The space $\mathbf{H}^{4,2}$ of vectors of norm -1 in $\mathbb{R}^{4,3}$ has a natural pseudo-Riemannian metric and a compatible almost complex structure. The group of automorphisms of both of these structures is the split real form $G_2'$. In this paper we consider a class of holomorphic curves in $\mathbf{H}^{4,2}$ which we call alternating. We show that such curves admit a so called Frenet framing. Using this framing, we show that the space of alternating holomorphic curves which are equivariant with respect to a surface group are naturally parameterized by certain $G_2'$-Higgs bundles. This leads to a holomorphic description of the moduli space as a fibration over Teichmüller space with a holomorphic action of the mapping class group. Using a generalization of Labourie's cyclic surfaces, we then show that equivariant alternating holomorphic curves are infinitesimally rigid.

Plateau Problems for Maximal Surfaces in Pseudo-Hyperbolic Spaces

We define and prove the existence of unique solutions of an asymptotic Plateau problem for spacelike maximal surfaces in the pseudo-hyperbolic space of signature (2, n): the boundary data is given by loops on the boundary at infinity of the pseudo-hyperbolic space which are limits of positive curves. We also discuss a compact Plateau problem. The required compactness arguments rely on an analysis of the pseudo-holomorphic curves defined by the Gauss lifts of the maximal surfaces.

Quasicircles and quasiperiodic surfaces in pseudo-hyperbolic spaces

We study in this paper quasiperiodic maximal surfaces in pseudo-hyperbolic spaces and show that they are characterised by a curvature condition, Gromov hyperbolicity or conformal hyperbolicity. We show that the limit curves of these surfaces in the Einstein Universe admits a canonical quasisymmetric parametrisation, while conversely every quasisymmetric curve in the Einstein Universe bounds a quasiperiodic surface in such a way that the quasisymmetric parametrisation is a continuous extension of the uniformisation; we give applications of these results to asymptotically hyperbolic surfaces, rigidity of Anosov representations and a version of the universal Teichmüller space.

Compact connected components in relative character varieties of punctured spheres

We prove that some relative character varieties of the fundamental group of a punctured sphere into the Hermitian Lie groups $\mathrm{SU}(p,q)$ admit compact connected components. The representations in these components have several counter-intuitive properties. For instance, the image of any simple closed curve is an elliptic element. These results extend a recent work of Deroin and the first author, which treated the case of $\textrm{PU}(1,1) = \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. Our proof relies on the non-Abelian Hodge correspondance between relative character varieties and parabolic Higgs bundles. The examples we construct admit a rather explicit description as projective varieties obtained via Geometric Invariant Theory.

The geometry of maximal representations of surface groups into SO(2,n)

In this paper, we study the geometric and dynamical properties of maximal representations of surface groups into Hermitian Lie groups of rank 2. Combining tools from Higgs bundle theory, the theory of Anosov representations, and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, we obtain various results of interest. We prove that these representations are holonomies of certain geometric structures, recovering results of Guichard and Wienhard. We also prove that their length spectrum is uniformly bigger than that of a suitably chosen Fuchsian representation, extending a previous work of the second author. Finally, we show that these representations preserve a unique minimal surface in the symmetric space, extending a theorem of Labourie for Hitchin representations in rank 2.

Maximal surfaces in anti-de Sitter 3-manifolds with particles

We prove the existence of a unique maximal surface in each anti-de Sitter (AdS) convex Globally Hyperbolic Maximal (GHM) manifold with particles (that is, with conical singularities along time-like lines) for cone angles less than $π$. We interpret this result in terms of Teichmüller theory, and prove the existence of a unique minimal Lagrangian diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities when the cone angles are the same for both surfaces and are less than $π$.

Minimal diffeomorphism between hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities

We prove the existence of a minimal diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic cone surfaces $(Σ,g_1)$ and $(Σ,g_2)$ when the cone angles of $g_1$ and $g_2$ are different and smaller than $π$. When the cone angles of $g_1$ are strictly smaller than the ones of $g_2$, this minimal diffeomorphism is unique.
