Behavior of the empirical Wasserstein distance in R^d under moment conditions

We establish some deviation inequalities, moment bounds and almost sure results for the Wasserstein distance of order p $\in$ [1, $\infty$) between the empirical measure of independent and identically distributed R d-valued random variables and the common distribution of the variables. We only assume the existence of a (strong or weak) moment of order rp for some r > 1, and we discuss the optimality of the bounds. Mathematics subject classification. 60B10, 60F10, 60F15, 60E15.

An alternative to the coupling of Berkes-Liu-Wu for strong approximations

In this paper we propose an alternative to the coupling of Berkes, Liu and Wu [1] to obtain strong approximations for partial sums of dependent sequences. The main tool is a new Rosen-thal type inequality expressed in terms of the coupling coefficients. These coefficients are well suited to some classes of Markov chains or dynamical systems, but they also give new results for smooth functions of linear processes.

On the Komlós, Major and Tusnády strong approximation for some classes of random iterates

The famous results of Komlós, Major and Tusnády (see [15] and [17]) state that it is possible to approximate almost surely the partial sums of size n of i.i.d. centered random variables in L p (p > 2) by a Wiener process with an error term of order o(n 1/p). Very recently, Berkes, Liu and Wu [3] extended this famous result to partial sums associated with functions of an i.i.d. sequence, provided a condition on a functional dependence measure in L p is satisfied. In this paper, we adapt the method of Berkes, Liu and Wu to partial sums of functions of random iterates. Taking advantage of the Markovian setting, we shall give new dependent conditions, expressed in terms of a natural coupling (in L $\infty$ or in L 1), under which the strong approximation result holds with rate o(n 1/p). As we shall see our conditions are well adapted to a large variety of models, including left random walks on GL d (R), contracting iterated random functions, autoregressive Lipschitz processes, and some ergodic Markov chains. We also provide some examples showing that our L 1-coupling condition is in some sense optimal.

The Mann-Whitney U-statistic for $α$-dependent sequences

We give the asymptotic behavior of the Mann-Whitney U-statistic for two independent stationary sequences. The result applies to a large class of short-range dependent sequences, including many non-mixing processes in the sense of Rosenblatt. We also give some partial results in the long-range dependent case, and we investigate other related questions. Based on the theoretical results, we propose some simple corrections of the usual tests for stochastic domination; next we simulate different (non-mixing) stationary processes to see that the corrected tests perform well.

Large and moderate deviations for the left random walk on GL d (R)

Using martingale methods, we obtain some upper bounds for large and moderate deviations of products of independent and identically distributed elements of GL d (R). We investigate all the possible moment conditions, from super-exponential moments to weak moments of order p \textgreater{} 1, to get a complete picture of the situation. We also prove a moderate deviation principle under an appropriate tail condition.

Density estimation for $β$-dependent sequences

We study the Lp-integrated risk of some classical estimators of the density, when the observations are drawn from a strictly stationary sequence. The results apply to a large class of sequences, which can be non-mixing in the sense of Rosenblatt and long-range dependent. The main probabilistic tool is a new Rosenthal-type inequality for partial sums of BV functions of the variables. As an application, we give the rates of convergence of regular Histograms, when estimating the invariant density of a class of expanding maps of the unit interval with a neutral fixed point at zero. These Histograms are plotted in the section devoted to the simulations.

Improved rates for Wasserstein deconvolution with ordinary smooth error in dimension one

This paper deals with the estimation of a probability measure on the real line from data observed with an additive noise. We are interested in rates of convergence for the Wasserstein metric of order $p\geq 1$. The distribution of the errors is assumed to be known and to belong to a class of supersmooth or ordinary smooth distributions. We obtain in the univariate situation an improved upper bound in the ordinary smooth case and less restrictive conditions for the existing bound in the supersmooth one. In the ordinary smooth case, a lower bound is also provided, and numerical experiments illustrating the rates of convergence are presented.

Behavior of the Wasserstein distance between the empirical and the marginal distributions of stationary $α$-dependent sequences

We study the Wasserstein distance of order 1 between the empirical distribution and the marginal distribution of stationary $α$-dependent sequences. We prove some moments inequalities of order p for any p $\ge$ 1, and we give some conditions under which the central limit theorem holds. We apply our results to unbounded functions of expanding maps of the interval with a neutral fixed point at zero. The moment inequalities for the Wasserstein distance are similar to the well known von Bahr-Esseen or Rosenthal bounds for partial sums, and seem to be new even in the case of independent and identically distributed random variables.

Moment bounds for dependent sequences in smooth Banach spaces

We prove a Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund type inequality for random variables taking values in a smooth Banach space. Next, we obtain some sharp concentration inequalities for the empirical measure of $\{T, T^2, \cdots, T^n\}$, on a class of smooth functions, when $T$ belongs to a class of nonuniformly expanding maps of the unit interval.

McDiarmid's martingale for a class of iterated random functions

We consider a Markov chain X_1, X_2, ..., X_n belonging to a class of iterated random functions, which is "one-step contracting" with respect to some distance d. If f is any separately Lipschitz function with respect to d, we use a well known decomposition of S_n=f(X_1, ..., X_n) -E[f(X_1, ..., X_n)]$ into a sum of martingale differences d_k with respect to the natural filtration F_k. We show that each difference d_k is bounded by a random variable eta_k independent of F_{k-1}. Using this very strong property, we obtain a large variety of deviation inequalities for S_n, which are governed by the distribution of the eta_k's. Finally, we give an application of these inequalities to the Wasserstein distance between the empirical measure and the invariant distribution of the chain.

Weak convergence of the empirical process of intermittent maps in L2 under long-range dependence

We study the behavior of the empirical distribution function of iterates of intermittent maps in the Hilbert space of square inegrable functions with respect to Lebesgue measure. In the long-range dependent case, we prove that the empirical distribution function, suitably normalized, converges to a degenerate stable process, and we give the corresponding almost sure result. We apply the results to the convergence of the Wasserstein distance between the empirical measure and the invariant measure. We also apply it to obtain the asymptotic distribution of the corresponding Cramér-von-Mises statistic.

Strong approximation results for the empirical process of stationary sequences

We prove a strong approximation result for the empirical process associated to a stationary sequence of real-valued random variables, under dependence conditions involving only indicators of half lines. This strong approximation result also holds for the empirical process associated to iterates of expanding maps with a neutral fixed point at zero, as soon as the correlations decrease more rapidly than $n^{-1-δ}$ for some positive $δ$. This shows that our conditions are in some sense optimal.

Minimax rates of convergence for Wasserstein deconvolution with supersmooth errors in any dimension

The subject of this paper is the estimation of a probability measure on ${\mathbb R}^d$ from data observed with an additive noise, under the Wasserstein metric of order $p$ (with $p\geq 1$). We assume that the distribution of the errors is known and belongs to a class of supersmooth distributions, and we give optimal rates of convergence for the Wasserstein metric of order $p$. In particular, we show how to use the existing lower bounds for the estimation of the cumulative distribution function in dimension one to find lower bounds for the Wasserstein deconvolution in any dimension.

A quenched weak invariance principle

In this paper we study the almost sure conditional central limit theorem in its functional form for a class of random variables satisfying a projective criterion. Applications to strongly mixing processes and non irreducible Markov chains are given. The proofs are based on the normal approximation of double indexed martingale-like sequences, a theory which has interest in itself.

Rates in the strong invariance principle for ergodic automorphisms of the torus

Let T be an ergodic automorphism of the d-dimensional torus. In the spirit of Le Borgne, we give conditions on the Fourier coeffi cients of a real valued function f under which the Birkhoff sums satis fy a strong invariance principle. Next, reinforcing the condition on the Fourier coeffi cients in a natural way, we obtain explicit rates of convergence in the strong invariance principle.

Rates of convergence in the strong invariance principle under projective criteria

We give rates of convergence in the strong invariance principle for stationary sequences satisfying some projective criteria. The conditions are expressed in terms of conditional expectations of partial sums of the initial sequence. Our results apply to a large variety of examples, including mixing processes of different kinds. We present some applications to symmetric random walks on the circle, to functions of dependent sequences, and to a reversible Markov chain.

Estimation in autoregressive model with measurement error

Consider an autoregressive model with measurement error: we observe $Z_i=X_i+ε_i$, where $X_i$ is a stationary solution of the equation $X_i=f_{θ^0}(X_{i-1})+ξ_i$. The regression function $f_{θ^0}$ is known up to a finite dimensional parameter $θ^0$. The distributions of $X_0$ and $ξ_1$ are unknown whereas the distribution of $ε_1$ is completely known. We want to estimate the parameter $θ^0$ by using the observations $Z_0,..,Z_n$. We propose an estimation procedure based on a modified least square criterion involving a weight function $w$, to be suitably chosen. We give upper bounds for the risk of the estimator, which depend on the smoothness of the errors density $f_ε$ and on the smoothness properties of $w f_θ$.
