Deep Learning for Atmospheric Turbulence Mitigation: A Comparison Between GANs and Transformers

Atmospheric turbulence creates complex spatial and temporal distortions that significantly reduce image quality. This work compares two deep learning methods for turbulence reduction: Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Transformer-based models. Both methods are trained and tested on the SOTIS dataset, which includes multi-frame sequences under different turbulence conditions with ground truth references. Our results show an important finding: GAN-based models perform better in severely degraded, low-quality situations, while Transformer-based models achieve better results in moderate to high-quality settings, especially in correcting geometric distortions. We also enhance the Turbulence Mitigation Transformer (TMT) by introducing a refined training strategy, an augmented input design that includes a temporally averaged frame as prior structural information, and a modified loss function that incorporates the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM). These improvements lead to consistent performance gains across various turbulence conditions. Overall, this study provides an in-depth evaluation of deep learning methods for turbulence reduction and offers practical guidance for selecting models in different imaging environments.

Multidimensional empirical wavelet transform

The empirical wavelet transform is a data-driven time-scale representation consisting of an adaptive filter bank. Its robustness to data has made it the subject of intense developments and an increasing number of applications in the last decade. However, it has been mostly studied theoretically for signals and its extension to images is limited to a particular generating function. This work presents a general framework for multidimensional empirical wavelet transform based on any wavelet kernel. It also provides conditions to build wavelet frames for both continuous and discrete transforms. Moreover, numerical simulations of transforms are given.

Demons registration for 2D empirical wavelet transforms

The empirical wavelet transform is a fully adaptive time-scale representation that has been widely used in the last decade. Inspired by the empirical mode decomposition, it consists of filter banks based on harmonic mode supports. Recently, it has been generalized to build the filter banks from any generating function using mappings. In practice, the harmonic mode supports can have low constrained shape in 2D, leading to numerical difficulties to compute the mappings and therefore the related wavelet filters. This work aims to propose an efficient numerical scheme to compute empirical wavelet coefficients using the demons registration algorithm. Results show that the proposed approach gives a numerically robust wavelet transform. An application to texture segmentation of scanning tunnelling microscope images is also presented.

Fast probabilistic snake algorithm

Few people use the probability theory in order to achieve image segmentation with snake models. In this article, we are presenting an active contour algorithm based on a probability approach inspired by A. Blake work and P. R{é}fr{é}gier's team research in France. Our algorithm, both very fast and highly accurate as far as contour description is concerned, is easily adaptable to any specific application.

METRIC: a complete methodology for performances evaluation of automatic target Detection, Recognition and Tracking algorithms in infrared imagery

In this communication, we deal with the question of automatic target detection, recognition and tracking (ATD/R/T) algorithms performance assessment. We propose a complete methodology of evaluation which approaches objective image datasets development and adapted metrics definition for the different tasks (detection, recognition and tracking). We present some performance results which are currently processed in a French-MoD program called 2ACI (``Acquisition Automatique de Cibles par Imagerie``).

A Regularization Approach to Blind Deblurring and Denoising of QR Barcodes

QR bar codes are prototypical images for which part of the image is a priori known (required patterns). Open source bar code readers, such as ZBar, are readily available. We exploit both these facts to provide and assess purely regularization-based methods for blind deblurring of QR bar codes in the presence of noise.

A parameterless scale-space approach to find meaningful modes in histograms - Application to image and spectrum segmentation

In this paper, we present an algorithm to automatically detect meaningful modes in a histogram. The proposed method is based on the behavior of local minima in a scale-space representation. We show that the detection of such meaningful modes is equivalent in a two classes clustering problem on the length of minima scale-space curves. The algorithm is easy to implement, fast, and does not require any parameters. We present several results on histogram and spectrum segmentation, grayscale image segmentation and color image reduction.
