The plus construction with respect to subrings of the rationals

We construct explicit models of universal $H \mathbb{Z}[J^{-1}]$-acyclic spaces $\mathcal M$, for any subset $J$ of the prime numbers. The corresponding nullification functors provide thus plus construction functors for ordinary homology with $\mathbb{Z}[J^{-1}]$ coefficients. Motivated by classical results about Quillen's plus construction for integral homology, we prove that the $H \mathbb{Z}[J^{-1}]$-acyclization functor and the $\mathcal M$-cellularization functor coincide. We show that the acyclization-plus construction fiber sequence is always a cofiber sequence for simply connected spaces, but almost never so when the plus construction is not simply connected, unlike in the classical case.

Conditional flatness, fiberwise localizations, and admissible reflections

We extend the group-theoretic notion of conditional flatness for a localization functor to any pointed category, and investigate it in the context of homological categories and of semi-abelian categories. In the presence of functorial fiberwise localization analogous results to those obtained in the category of groups hold, and we provide existence theorems for certain localization functors in specific semi-abelian categories. We prove that a Birkhoff subcategory of an ideal determined category yields a conditionally flat localization, and explain how conditional flatness corresponds to the property of admissibility of an adjunction from the point of view of categorical Galois theory. Under the assumption of fiberwise localization we give a simple criterion to determine when a (normal epi)-reflection is a torsion-free reflection. This is shown to apply in particular to nullification functors in any semi-abelian variety of universal algebras. We also relate semi-left-exactness for a localization functor $L$ with what is called right properness for the $L$-local model structure.

Admissibility of Localizations of Crossed Modules

The correspondence between the concept of conditional flatness and admissibility in the sense of Galois appears in the context of localization functors in any semi-abelian category admitting a fiberwise localization. It is then natural to wonder what happens in the category of crossed modules where fiberwise localization is not always available. In this article, we establish an equivalence between conditional flatness and admissibility in the sense of Galois (for the class of regular epimorphisms) for regular-epi localization functors. We use this equivalence to prove that nullification functors are admissible for the class of regular epimorphisms, even if the kernels of their localization morphisms are not acyclic.

Non-existence of fiberwise localization for crossed modules

We prove that localization functors of crossed modules of groups do not always admit fiberwise (or relative) versions. To do so we characterize the existence of a fiberwise localization by a certain normality condition and compute explicit examples and counter-examples. In fact, some nullification functors do not behave well and we also prove that the fiber of certain nullification functors, known as acyclization functors in other settings such as groups or spaces, is not acyclic.

Floyd's manifold is a conjugation space

We prove that there is an action of the cyclic group $\mathbf{C}_2$ on the $10$-dimensional Floyd manifold which turns it into a conjugation manifold. The submanifold of fixed points is the $5$-dimensional Floyd manifold, whose cohomology is isomorphic to that of the large one, scaled down by dividing the cohomological degree by a factor two.

Realizing doubles: a conjugation zoo

Conjugation spaces are topological spaces equipped with an involution such that their fixed points have the same mod $2$ cohomology (as a graded vector space, a ring, and even an unstable algebra) but with all degrees divided by two, generalizing the classical examples of complex projective spaces under complex conjugation. Spaces which are constructed from unit balls in complex Euclidean spaces are called spherical and are very well understood. Our aim is twofold. We construct "exotic" conjugation spaces and study the realization question: which spaces can be realized as real loci, i.e., fixed points of conjugation spaces. We identify obstructions and provide examples of spaces and manifolds which cannot be realized as such.

A Torus Theorem for homotopy nilpotent groups

Nilpotency for discrete groups can be defined in terms of central extensions. In this paper, the analogous definition for spaces is stated in terms of principal fibrations having infinite loop spaces as fibers, yielding a new invariant we compare with classical cocategory, but also with the more recent notion of homotopy nilpotency introduced by Biedermann and Dwyer. This allows us to characterize finite homotopy nilpotent loop spaces in the spirit of Hubbuck's Torus Theorem, and corresponding results for $p$-compact groups and $p$-Noetherian groups.

Topological Complexity of H-Spaces

Let X be a (not-necessarily homotopy-associative) H-space. We show that TC_{n+1}(X) = cat(X^n), for n >= 1, where TC_{n+1}(-) denotes the so-called higher topological complexity introduced by Rudyak, and cat(-) denotes the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category. We also generalize this equality to an inequality, which gives an upper bound for TC_{n+1}(X), in the setting of a space Y acting on X.

Non-simple localizations of finite simple groups

Often a localization functor (in the category of groups) sends a finite simple group to another finite simple group. We study when such a localization also induces a localization between the automorphism groups and between the universal central extensions. As a consequence we exhibit many examples of localizations of finite simple groups which are not simple.
