A high resolution ion microscope for cold atoms

We report on an ion-optical system that serves as a microscope for ultracold ground state and Rydberg atoms. The system is designed to achieve a magnification of up to 1000 and a spatial resolution in the 100 nm range, thereby surpassing many standard imaging techniques for cold atoms. The microscope consists of four electrostatic lenses and a microchannel plate in conjunction with a delay line detector in order to achieve single particle sensitivity with high temporal and spatial resolution. We describe the design process of the microscope including ion-optical simulations of the imaging system and characterize aberrations and the resolution limit. Furthermore, we present the experimental realization of the microscope in a cold atom setup and investigate its performance by patterned ionization with a structure size down to 2.7 μm. The microscope meets the requirements for studying various many-body effects, ranging from correlations in cold quantum gases up to Rydberg molecule formation.

Second-order correlations in single-particle interferometry

Interferometers with single particles are susceptible for dephasing perturbations from the environment, such as electromagnetic oscillations or mechanical vibrations. On the one hand, this limits sensitive quantum phase measurements as it reduces the interference contrast. On the other hand, it enables single-particle interferometers to be used as sensitive sensors for electromagnetic and mechanical perturbations. Recently, it was demonstrated experimentally, that a second-order correlation analysis can decrease the shielding and damping requirements significantly. Thereby, the relevant matter-wave characteristics and perturbation parameters could be extracted from the correlation analysis of a "washed-out" interference pattern and the undisturbed interferogram could be reconstructed. This method can be applied to all interferometers, that produce a spatial fringe pattern on a detector with high spatial and temporal single-particle resolution. In this article, we present and discuss in detail the used two-dimensional second-order correlation theory for multifrequency perturbations. The derivations of an explicit and approximate solution of the correlation function and corresponding amplitude spectra are provided. It is explained, how the numerical correlation function is extracted from the measurement data. Thereby, the influence of the temporal and spatial discretization step size on the extracted parameters is analyzed. The influence of noise on the correlation function and amplitude spectrum is calculated and numerically cross-checked by a comparison of our theory with numerical single-particle simulations. Our method can also be applied for the analysis of broad-band frequency noise, dephasing the interference pattern. Using Gaussian distributed noise in the simulations, we demonstrate that the relevant matter-wave parameters and the applied perturbation spectrum can be revealed.

Multiatom Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states using cavity-induced Rydberg blockade

We describe a novel method for producing Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in cold atoms coupled to a superconducting coplanar cavity. In the proposed scheme, atoms interact between each other by virtual photon exchange via a cavity mode. These interactions cause an asymmetric Rydberg blockade mechanism that suppresses simultaneous excitations into different atomic Rydberg levels, thus forcing all atoms to occupy the same Rydberg state. This mechanism has effect even if the atoms are separated by distances of the order of millimeters. The atomic populations are transferred adiabatically from the ground state into the entangled state by following a collective dark state with low dissipation rates.

Long-range quantum gate via Rydberg states of atoms in a thermal microwave cavity

We propose an implementation of a universal quantum gate between pairs of spatially separated atoms in a microwave cavity at finite temperature. The gate results from reversible laser excitation of Rydberg states of atoms interacting with each other via exchange of virtual photons through a common cavity mode. Quantum interference of different transition paths between the two-atom ground and double-excited Rydberg states makes both the transition amplitude and resonance largely insensitive to the excitations in the microwave cavity "quantum bus" which can therefore be in any superposition or mixture of photon number states. Our scheme for attaining ultralong-range interactions and entanglement also applies to mesoscopic atomic ensembles in the Rydberg blockade regime and is scalable to many ensembles trapped within a centimeter sized microwave resonator.

All-optical measurement of Rydberg state lifetimes

We have developed an all-optical method for measuring the lifetimes of $n S$ and $n D$ Rydberg states and demonstrate its capabilities with measurements on a dilute cloud of ultracold ${}^{87}$Rb atoms in a cryogenic environment. The method is based on the time-resolved observation of resonant light absorption by ground state atoms and selective transfer of Rydberg atoms into the ground state at varying delay times in order to reconstruct Rydberg decay curves. Our measurements of the ${}^{87}$Rb $30S_{1/2}$ state indicate an increase of the lifetime at lowered environment temperatures, as expected due to decreased black body radiation. For the $38D_{5/2}$ state with an attractive dipole-dipole interaction, ionization and lifetime reduction due to collisional effects are observed.

Measurement and numerical calculation of Rubidium Rydberg Stark spectra

We report on the measurement of Stark shifted energy levels of $^{87}$Rb Rydberg atoms in static electric fields by means of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Electric field strengths of up to 500V/cm, ranging beyond the classical ionisation threshold, were applied using electrodes inside a glass cell with rubidium vapour. Stark maps for principal quantum numbers $n=35$ and $n=70$ have been obtained with high signal-to-noise ratio for comparison with results from ab initio calculations following the method described in [M. L. Zimmerman et al., Phys. Rev. A 20, 2251 (1979)], which was originally only verified for states around $n=15$. We also calculate the dipole matrix elements between low-lying states and Stark shifted Rydberg states to give a theoretical estimate of the relative strength of the EIT signal. The present work significantly extends the experimental verification of this numerical method in the range of both high principal quantum numbers and high electric fields with an accuracy of up to 2MHz.

Quasiclassical theory of quantum defect and spectrum of highly excited rubidium atoms

We report on a significant discrepancy between recently published highly accurate variational calculations and precise measurements of the spectrum of Rydberg states in $^{87}$Rb on the energy scale of fine splitting. Introducing a modified effective single-electron potential we determine the spectrum of the outermost bound electron from a standard WKB approach. Overall very good agreement with precise spectroscopic data is obtained.

Inductively coupled superconducting half wavelength resonators as persistent current traps for ultracold atoms

A crucial point in the experimental implementation of hybrid quantum systems consisting of superconducting circuits and atomic ensembles is bringing the two partners close enough to each other that a strong quantum coherent coupling can be established. Here, we propose to use the metallization structures of a half wavelength superconducting coplanar waveguide resonator as a persistent current trap for ultracold paramagnetic atoms. Trapping atoms with the resonator structure itself is provided by using short-ended and inductively coupled resonators instead of capacitively coupled ones as customary in circuit quantum electrodynamics. We analyze the external quality factor of short-ended coplanar waveguide resonators and show that it can be easily designed for the desired regime of quantum circuits. The magnetic field configuration at the resonator is calculated by means of numerical three-dimensional simulations of the London equations. We present a way to transport an atomic ensemble into the coplanar resonator gap where the magnetic field of the cavity mode is maximum. The configuration allows stable trapping by persistent currents and paves the route towards strong coupling between atomic clouds and the cavity mode which is required for cooperative effects and gives the interface between atoms and circuit quantum electrodynamics.

Loschmidt echo and the many-body orthogonality catastrophe in a qubit-coupled Luttinger liquid

We investigate the many-body generalization of the orthogonality catastrophe by studying the generalized Loschmidt echo of Luttinger liquids (LLs) after a global change of interaction. It decays exponentially with system size and exhibits universal behaviour: the steady state exponent after quenching back and forth n-times between 2 LLs (bang-bang protocol) is 2n-times bigger than that of the adiabatic overlap, and depends only on the initial and final LL parameters. These are corroborated numerically by matrix-product state based methods of the XXZ Heisenberg model. An experimental setup consisting of a hybrid system containing cold atoms and a flux qubit coupled to a Feshbach resonance is proposed to measure the Loschmidt echo using rf spectroscopy or Ramsey interferometry.

Measurement of absolute transition frequencies of 87Rb to nS and nD Rydberg states by means of electromagnetically induced transparency

We report the measurement of absolute excitation frequencies of 87Rb to nS and nD Rydberg states. The Rydberg transition frequencies are obtained by observing electromagnetically induced transparency on a rubidium vapor cell. The accuracy of the measurement of each state is < 1 MHz, which is achieved by frequency stabilizing the two diode lasers employed for the spectroscopy to a frequency comb and a frequency comb calibrated wavelength meter, respectively. Based on the spectroscopic data we determine the quantum defects of 87Rb, and compare it with previous measurements on 85Rb. We determine the ionization frequency from the 5S1/2(F=1) ground state of 87Rb to 1010.0291646(3) THz, providing the binding energy of the ground state with an accuracy improved by two orders of magnitude.

Sublimation of the Endohedral Fullerene Er3N@C80

The heat of sublimation of the endohedral metallofullerene Er3N@C80 was measured via Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. The large molecule consists of a C80 fullerene cage which is stabilized by comprising a complex of three erbium atoms bounded to a nitrogen atom and has a mass of 1475 amu. The mass spectrum at a temperature of 1045 K and the relative intensities of the thermal fractions of Er3N@C80 are provided. We also discuss possible thermal decomposition processes for these particles. By measuring the quantity of evaporated molecules in thermal equilibrium through a quadrupole mass spectrometer in a temperature range between 782 K and 1128 K, a value for the sublimation enthalpy of Hsub = 237 +-7 kJ/mol is obtained from the second law method.
