An exact smooth Gowdy-symmetric generalized Taub-NUT solution

In a recent paper (Beyer and Hennig, 2012 [9]), we have introduced a class of inhomogeneous cosmological models: the smooth Gowdy-symmetric generalized Taub-NUT solutions. Here we derive a three-parametric family of exact solutions within this class, which contains the two-parametric Taub solution as a special case. We also study properties of this solution. In particular, we show that for a special choice of the parameters, the spacetime contains a curvature singularity with directional behaviour that can be interpreted as a "true spike" in analogy to previously known Gowdy symmetric solutions with spatial T3-topology. For other parameter choices, the maximal globally hyperbolic region is singularity-free, but may contain "false spikes".

Fully pseudospectral solution of the conformally invariant wave equation near the cylinder at spacelike infinity

We study the scalar, conformally invariant wave equation on a four-dimensional Minkowski background in spherical symmetry, using a fully pseudospectral numerical scheme. Thereby, our main interest is in a suitable treatment of spatial infinity, which is represented as a cylinder. We consider both Cauchy problems, where we evolve data from a Cauchy surface to future null infinity, as well as characteristic initial value problems with data at past null infinity, and demonstrate that highly accurate numerical solutions can be obtained for a small number of grid points.

Fully pseudospectral time evolution and its application to 1+1 dimensional physical problems

It was recently demonstrated that time-dependent PDE problems can numerically be solved with a fully pseudospectral scheme, i.e. using spectral expansions with respect to both spatial and time directions (Hennig and Ansorg, 2009 [15]). This was done with the example of simple scalar wave equations in Minkowski spacetime. Here we show that the method can be used to study interesting physical problems that are described by systems of nonlinear PDEs. To this end we consider two 1+1 dimensional problems: radial oscillations of spherically symmetric Newtonian stars and time evolution of Gowdy spacetimes as particular cosmological models in general relativity.

Smooth Gowdy symmetric generalized Taub-NUT solutions

We study a class of S3 Gowdy vacuum models with a regular past Cauchy horizon which we call smooth Gowdy symmetric generalized Taub-NUT solutions. In particular, we prove existence of such solutions by formulating a singular initial value problem with asymptotic data on the past Cauchy horizon. The result of our investigations is that a future Cauchy horizon exists for generic asymptotic data. Moreover, we derive an explicit expression for the metric on the future Cauchy horizon in terms of the asymptotic data on the past horizon. This complements earlier results about S2xS1 Gowdy models.

Stationary two-black-hole configurations: A non-existence proof

Based on the solution of a boundary problem for disconnected (Killing) horizons and the resulting violation of characteristic black hole properties, we present a non-existence proof for equilibrium configurations consisting of two aligned rotating black holes. Our discussion is principally aimed at developing the ideas of the proof and summarizing the results of two preceding papers (Neugebauer and Hennig, 2009 [29], Hennig and Neugebauer, 2011 [12]). From a mathematical point of view, this paper is a further example (Meinel et al., 2008 [22]) for the application of the inverse ("scattering") method to a non-linear elliptic differential equation.

Universal properties of distorted Kerr-Newman black holes

We discuss universal properties of axisymmetric and stationary configurations consisting of a central black hole and surrounding matter in Einstein-Maxwell theory. In particular, we find that certain physical equations and inequalities (involving angular momentum, electric charge and horizon area) are not restricted to the Kerr-Newman solution but can be generalized to the situation where the black hole is distorted by an arbitrary axisymmetric and stationary surrounding matter distribution.

Non-existence of stationary two-black-hole configurations: The degenerate case

In a preceding paper we examined the question whether the spin-spin repulsion and the gravitational attraction of two aligned sub-extremal black holes can balance each other. Based on the solution of a boundary value problem for two separate (Killing-) horizons and a novel black hole criterion we were able to prove the non-existence of the equilibrium configuration in question. In this paper we extend the non-existence proof to extremal black holes.

The interior of axisymmetric and stationary black holes: Numerical and analytical studies

We investigate the interior hyperbolic region of axisymmetric and stationary black holes surrounded by a matter distribution. First, we treat the corresponding initial value problem of the hyperbolic Einstein equations numerically in terms of a single-domain fully pseudo-spectral scheme. Thereafter, a rigorous mathematical approach is given, in which soliton methods are utilized to derive an explicit relation between the event horizon and an inner Cauchy horizon. This horizon arises as the boundary of the future domain of dependence of the event horizon. Our numerical studies provide strong evidence for the validity of the universal relation $\Ap\Am = (8πJ)^2$ where $\Ap$ and $\Am$ are the areas of event and inner Cauchy horizon respectively, and $J$ denotes the angular momentum. With our analytical considerations we are able to prove this relation rigorously.

Non-existence of stationary two-black-hole configurations

We resume former discussions of the question, whether the spin-spin repulsion and the gravitational attraction of two aligned sub-extremal black holes can balance each other. To answer the question we formulate a boundary value problem for two separate (Killing-) horizons and apply the inverse (scattering) method to solve it. Making use of a universal inequality between angular momentum and horizon area that has to be satisfied by every sub-extremal black hole, we prove the non-existence of the equilibrium situation in question.

Regularity of Cauchy horizons in S2xS1 Gowdy spacetimes

We study general S2xS1 Gowdy models with a regular past Cauchy horizon and prove that a second (future) Cauchy horizon exists, provided that a particular conserved quantity $J$ is not zero. We derive an explicit expression for the metric form on the future Cauchy horizon in terms of the initial data on the past horizon and conclude the universal relation $A\p A\f=(8πJ)^2$ where $A\p$ and $A\f$ are the areas of past and future Cauchy horizon respectively.

We resume former discussions of the question, whether the spin-spin repulsion and the gravitational attraction of two aligned black holes can balance each other. To answer the question we formulate a boundary value problem for two separate (Killing-) horizons and apply the inverse (scattering) method to solve it. Inner Cauchy horizon of axisymmetric and stationary black holes with surrounding matter in Einstein-Maxwell theory

We study the interior electrovacuum region of axisymmetric and stationary black holes with surrounding matter and find that there exists always a regular inner Cauchy horizon inside the black hole, provided the angular momentum $J$ and charge $Q$ of the black hole do not vanish simultaneously. In particular, we derive an explicit relation for the metric on the Cauchy horizon in terms of that on the event horizon. Moreover, our analysis reveals the remarkable universal relation $(8πJ)^2+(4πQ^2)^2=A^+ A^-$, where $A^+$ and $A^-$ denote the areas of event and Cauchy horizon respectively.

The inner Cauchy horizon of axisymmetric and stationary black holes with surrounding matter in Einstein-Maxwell theory: study in terms of soliton methods

We use soliton methods in order to investigate the interior electrovacuum region of axisymmetric and stationary, electrically charged black holes with arbitrary surrounding matter in Einstein-Maxwell theory. These methods can be applied since the Einstein-Maxwell vacuum equations permit the formulation in terms of the integrability condition of an associated linear matrix problem. We find that there always exists a regular inner Cauchy horizon inside the black hole, provided the angular momentum $J$ and charge $Q$ of the black hole do not vanish simultaneously. Moreover, the soliton methods provide us with an explicit relation for the metric on the inner Cauchy horizon in terms of that on the event horizon. In addition, our analysis reveals the remarkable universal relation $(8πJ)^2+(4πQ^2)^2=A^+ A^-$, where $A^+$ and $A^-$ denote the reas of event and inner Cauchy horizon respectively.

A Fully Pseudospectral Scheme for Solving Singular Hyperbolic Equations

With the example of the spherically symmetric scalar wave equation on Minkowski space-time we demonstrate that a fully pseudospectral scheme (i.e. spectral with respect to both spatial and time directions) can be applied for solving hyperbolic equations. The calculations are carried out within the framework of conformally compactified space-times. In our formulation, the equation becomes singular at null infinity and yields regular boundary conditions there. In this manner it becomes possible to avoid "artificial" conditions at some numerical outer boundary at a finite distance. We obtain highly accurate numerical solutions possessing exponential spectral convergence, a feature known from solving elliptic PDEs with spectral methods. Our investigations are meant as a first step towards the goal of treating time evolution problems in General Relativity with spectral methods in space and time.

The inner Cauchy horizon of axisymmetric and stationary black holes with surrounding matter

We investigate the interior of regular axisymmetric and stationary black holes surrounded by matter and find that for non-vanishing angular momentum of the black hole the space time can always be extended regularly up to and including an inner Cauchy horizon. We provide an explicit relation for the regular metric at the inner Cauchy horizon in terms of that at the event horizon. As a consequence, we obtain the universal equality $(8πJ)^2 = A^+ A^-$ where $J$ is the black hole's angular momentum and $A^-$ and $A^+$ denote the horizon areas of inner Cauchy and event horizon, respectively. We also find that in the limit $J \to 0$ the inner Cauchy horizon becomes singular.

Thermodynamic Description of Inelastic Collisions in General Relativity

We discuss head-on collisions of neutron stars and disks of dust ("galaxies") following the ideas of equilibrium thermodynamics, which compares equilibrium states and avoids the description of the dynamical transition processes between them. As an always present damping mechanism, gravitational emission results in final equilibrium states after the collision. In this paper we calculate selected final configurations from initial data of colliding stars and disks by making use of conservation laws and solving the Einstein equations. Comparing initial and final states, we can decide for which initial parameters two colliding neutron stars (non-rotating Fermi gas models) merge into a single neutron star and two rigidly rotating disks form again a final (differentially rotating) disk of dust. For the neutron star collision we find a maximal energy loss due to outgoing gravitational radiation of 2.3% of the initial mass while the corresponding efficiency for colliding disks has the much larger limit of 23.8%.
