On a family of singular potentials: Parameter dependence of thermodynamic characteristics

We consider the family of singular potentials $ψ_c = 2 \log(|\sin(π(x-c))|)$, $c\in \mathbb{T}$ over the doubling map and we examine the dependence of several thermodynamic and multifractal characteristics on the position of the singularity $c$. This includes the pressure functions $\mathcal P(t ψ_c)$, the Birkhoff spectrum of $ψ_c$, and the $L^q$ spectrum of the associated equilibrium measure $μ_c$. For every $c \in \mathbb{T}$, it is known that $μ_c$ is given by the diffraction measure of a generalized Thue--Morse sequence, with the classical Thue--Morse measure arising for $c = 0$. If $t\geqslant 0$, we show that $c \mapsto \mathcal{P}(tψ_c)$ is continuous in $c$. If $t<0$, we prove that the function $c \mapsto \mathcal{P}(tψ_c)$ is lower semicontinuous but not continuous. In this case, we show that the continuity points are precisely those values $c$ such that $\mathcal{P}(tψ_c) = \infty$, which form a residual set of vanishing Hausdorff dimension in $\mathbb{T}$. We obtain similar statements about the parameter (semi-)continuity of the $L^q$ spectrum and the Birkhoff spectrum.

Fast dimension spectrum for a potential with a logarithmic singularity

We regard the classic Thue--Morse diffraction measure as an equilibrium measure for a potential function with a logarithmic singularity over the doubling map. Our focus is on unusually fast scaling of the Birkhoff sums (superlinear) and of the local measure decay (superpolynomial). For several scaling functions, we show that points with this behavior are abundant in the sense of full Hausdorff dimension. At the fastest possible scaling, the corresponding rates reveal several remarkable phenomena. There is a gap between level sets for dyadic rationals and non-dyadic points, and beyond dyadic rationals, non-zero accumulation points occur only within intervals of positive length. The dependence between the smallest and the largest accumulation point also manifests itself in a non-trivial joint dimension spectrum.

Multifractal Analysis of generalized Thue-Morse trigonometric polynomials

We consider the generalized Thue-Morse sequences $(t_n^{(c)})_{n\ge 0}$ ($c \in [0,1)$ being a parameter) defined by $t_n^{(c)} = e^{2πi c s_2(n)}$, where $s_2(n)$ is the sum of digits of the binary expansion of $n$. For the polynomials $σ_{N}^{(c)} (x) := \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} t_n^{(c)} e^{2πi n x}$, we have proved in [18] that the uniform norm $\|σ_N^{(c)}\|_\infty$ behaves like $N^{γ(c)}$ and the best exponent $γ(c)$ is computed. In this paper, we study the pointwise behavior and give a complete multifractal analysis of the limit $\lim_{n\to\infty}n^{-1}\log |σ_{2^n}^{(c)}(x)|$.

On the Fourier dimension and a modification

We give a sufficient condition for the Fourier dimension of a countable union of sets to equal the supremum of the Fourier dimensions of the sets in the union, and show by example that the Fourier dimension is not countably stable in general. A natural approach to finite stability of the Fourier dimension for sets would be to try to prove that the Fourier dimension for measures is finitely stable, but we give an example showing that it is not in general. We also describe some situations where the Fourier dimension for measures is stable or is stable for all but one value of some parameter. Finally we propose a way of modifying the definition of the Fourier dimension so that it becomes countably stable, and show that a measure has modified Fourier dimension greater than or equal to $s$ if and only if it annihilates all sets with modified Fourier dimension less than $s$.

On the asymptotics of the scenery flow

Various notions of "zooming in" on measures exist in the literature and the scenery flow is one of them. It is of interest to describe the joint asymptotics of the scenery flows generated by a measure and the measure transported by a local diffeomorphism. We give both sufficient and necessary conditions for the scenery distributions to be asymptotic and provide some examples.

On measures resisting multifractal analysis

Any ergodic measure of a smooth map on a compact manifold has a multifractal spectrum with one point - the dimension of the measure itself - at the diagonal. We will construct examples where this fails in the most drastic way for invariant measures invariant under linear maps of the circle.

On the dimension of iterated sumsets

Let A be a subset of the real line. We study the fractal dimensions of the k-fold iterated sumsets kA, defined as kA = A+...+A (k times). We show that for any non-decreasing sequence {a_k} taking values in [0,1], there exists a compact set A such that kA has Hausdorff dimension a_k for all k. We also show how to control various kinds of dimension simultaneously for families of iterated sumsets. These results are in stark contrast to the Plunnecke-Rusza inequalities in additive combinatorics. However, for lower box-counting dimension, the analogue of the Plunnecke-Rusza inequalities does hold.

Further Baire results on the distribution of subsequences

This paper presents results about the distribution of subsequences which are typical in the sense of Baire. The first part is concerned with sequences of the type x_k = n_k*alpha, n_1 < n_2 < n_3 < ..., mod 1. Improving a result of Salat we show that, if the quotients q_k = n_{k+1}/n_k satisfy q_k > 1+ epsilon, then the set of alpha such that (x_k) is uniformly distributed is of first Baire category, i.e. for generic alpha we do not have uniform distribution. Under the stronger assumption lim q_k = infinity one even has maldistribution for generic alpha, the strongest possible contrast to uniform distribution. The second part reverses the point of view by considering appropriately defined Baire spaces S of subsequences. For a fixed well distributed sequence (x_n) we show that there is a set M of measures such that for generic (n_k) in S the set of limit measures of the subsequence (x_{n_k}) is exactly M.

Dimension and product structure of hyperbolic measures

We prove that every hyperbolic measure invariant under a C^{1+α} diffeomorphism of a smooth Riemannian manifold possesses asymptotically ``almost'' local product structure, i.e., its density can be approximated by the product of the densities on stable and unstable manifolds up to small exponentials. This has not been known even for measures supported on locally maximal hyperbolic sets. Using this property of hyperbolic measures we prove the long-standing Eckmann-Ruelle conjecture in dimension theory of smooth dynamical systems: the pointwise dimension of every hyperbolic measure invariant under a C^{1+α} diffeomorphism exists almost everywhere. This implies the crucial fact that virtually all the characteristics of dimension type of the measure (including the Hausdorff dimension, box dimension, and information dimension) coincide. This provides the rigorous mathematical justification of the concept of fractal dimension for hyperbolic measures.
