Full Logarithmic Conformal Field theory - an Attempt at a Status Report

Logarithmic conformal field theories are based on vertex algebras with non-semisimple representation categories. While examples of such theories have been known for more than 25 years, some crucial aspects of local logarithmic CFTs have been understood only recently, with the help of a description of conformal blocks by modular functors. We present some of these results, both about bulk fields and about boundary fields and boundary states. We also describe some recent progress towards a derived modular functor. This is a summary of work with Terry Gannon, Simon Lentner, Svea Mierach, Gregor Schaumann and Yorck Sommerhäuser.

The logarithmic Cardy case: Boundary states and annuli

We present a model-independent study of boundary states in the Cardy case that covers all conformal field theories for which the representation category of the chiral algebra is a - not necessarily semisimple - modular tensor category. This class, which we call finite CFTs, includes all rational theories, but goes much beyond these, and in particular comprises many logarithmic conformal field theories. We show that the following two postulates for a Cardy case are compatible beyond rational CFT and lead to a universal description of boundary states that realizes a standard mathematical setup: First, for bulk fields, the pairing of left and right movers is given by (a coend involving) charge conjugation; and second, the boundary conditions are given by the objects of the category of chiral data. For rational theories our proposal reproduces the familiar result for the boundary states of the Cardy case. Further, with the help of sewing we compute annulus amplitudes. Our results show in particular that these possess an interpretation as partition functions, a constraint that for generic finite CFTs is much more restrictive than for rational ones.

Consistent systems of correlators in non-semisimple conformal field theory

Based on the modular functor associated with a -- not necessarily semisimple -- finite non-degenerate ribbon category $\mathcal D$, we present a definition of a consistent system of bulk field correlators for a conformal field theory which comprises invariance under mapping class group actions and compatibility with the sewing of surfaces. We show that when restricting to surfaces of genus zero such systems are in bijection with commutative symmetric Frobenius algebras in $\mathcal D$, while for surfaces of any genus they are in bijection with modular Frobenius algebras in $\mathcal D$. This provides additional insight into structures familiar from rational conformal field theories and extends them to rigid logarithmic conformal field theories.

Coends in conformal field theory

The idea of "summing over all intermediate states" that is central for implementing locality in quantum systems can be realized by coend constructions. In the concrete case of systems of conformal blocks for a certain class of conformal vertex algebras, one deals with coends in functor categories. Working with these coends involves quite a few subtleties which, even though they have in principle already been understood twenty years ago, have not been sufficiently appreciated by the conformal field theory community.

Low-dimensional topology, low-dimensional field theory and representation theory

Structures in low-dimensional topology and low-dimensional geometry -- often combined with ideas from (quantum) field theory -- can explain and inspire concepts in algebra and in representation theory and their categorified versions. We present a personal view on some of these instances which have appeared within the Research Priority Programme SPP 1388 ``Representation theory''.

On the Brauer groups of symmetries of abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten theories

Symmetries of three-dimensional topological field theories are naturally defined in terms of invertible topological surface defects. Symmetry groups are thus Brauer-Picard groups. We present a gauge theoretic realization of all symmetries of abelian Dijkgraaf-Witten theories. The symmetry group for a Dijkgraaf-Witten theory with gauge group a finite abelian group $A$, and with vanishing 3-cocycle, is generated by group automorphisms of $A$, by automorphisms of the trivial Chern-Simons 2-gerbe on the stack of $A$-bundles, and by partial e-m dualities. We show that transmission functors naturally extracted from extended topological field theories with surface defects give a physical realization of the bijection between invertible bimodule categories of a fusion category and braided auto-equivalences of its Drinfeld center. The latter provides the labels for bulk Wilson lines; it follows that a symmetry is completely characterized by its action on bulk Wilson lines.

A note on permutation twist defects in topological bilayer phases

We present a mathematical derivation of some of the most important physical quantities arising in topological bilayer systems with permutation twist defects as introduced by Barkeshli et al. in cond-mat/1208.4834. A crucial tool is the theory of permutation equivariant modular functors developed by Barmeier et al. in math.CT/0812.0986 and math.QA/1004.1825.

Hopf algebras and Frobenius algebras in finite tensor categories

We discuss algebraic and representation theoretic structures in braided tensor categories C which obey certain finiteness conditions. Much interesting structure of such a category is encoded in a Hopf algebra H in C. In particular, the Hopf algebra H gives rise to representations of the modular group SL(2,Z) on various morphism spaces. We also explain how every symmetric special Frobenius algebra in a semisimple modular category provides additional structure related to these representations.

Defect lines, dualities, and generalised orbifolds

Defects are a useful tool in the study of quantum field theories. This is illustrated in the example of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We describe how defect lines and their junction points appear in the description of symmetries and order-disorder dualities, as well as in the orbifold construction and a generalisation thereof that covers exceptional modular invariants.

Bundle Gerbes and Surface Holonomy

Hermitian bundle gerbes with connection are geometric objects for which a notion of surface holonomy can be defined for closed oriented surfaces. We systematically introduce bundle gerbes by closing the pre-stack of trivial bundle gerbes under descent. Inspired by structures arising in a representation theoretic approach to rational conformal field theories, we introduce geometric structure that is appropriate to define surface holonomy in more general situations: Jandl gerbes for unoriented surfaces, D-branes for surfaces with boundaries, and bi-branes for surfaces with defect lines.

Topological defects for the free boson CFT

Two different conformal field theories can be joined together along a defect line. We study such defects for the case where the conformal field theories on either side are single free bosons compactified on a circle. We concentrate on topological defects for which the left- and right-moving Virasoro algebras are separately preserved, but not necessarily any additional symmetries. For the case where both radii are rational multiples of the self-dual radius we classify these topological defects. We also show that the isomorphism between two T-dual free boson conformal field theories can be described by the action of a topological defect, and hence that T-duality can be understood as a special type of order-disorder duality.

Bi-branes: Target Space Geometry for World Sheet topological Defects

We establish that the relevant geometric data for the target space description of world sheet topological defects are submanifolds - which we call bi-branes - in the product M1 x M2 of the two target spaces involved. Very much like branes, they are equipped with a vector bundle, which in backgrounds with non-trivial B-field is actually a twisted vector bundle. We explain how to define Wess-Zumino terms in the presence of bi-branes and discuss the fusion of bi-branes. In the case of WZW theories, symmetry preserving bi-branes are shown to be biconjugacy classes. The algebra of functions on a biconjugacy class is shown to be related, in the limit of large level, to the partition function for defect fields. We finally indicate how the Verlinde algebra arises in the fusion of WZW bi-branes.

Duality and defects in rational conformal field theory

We study topological defect lines in two-dimensional rational conformal field theory. Continuous variation of the location of such a defect does not change the value of a correlator. Defects separating different phases of local CFTs with the same chiral symmetry are included in our discussion. We show how the resulting one-dimensional phase boundaries can be used to extract symmetries and order-disorder dualities of the CFT. The case of central charge c=4/5, for which there are two inequivalent world sheet phases corresponding to the tetra-critical Ising model and the critical three-states Potts model, is treated as an illustrative example.

TFT construction of RCFT correlators IV: Structure constants and correlation functions

We compute the fundamental correlation functions in two-dimensional rational conformal field theory, from which all other correlators can be obtained by sewing: the correlators of three bulk fields on the sphere, one bulk and one boundary field on the disk, three boundary fields on the disk, and one bulk field on the cross cap. We also consider conformal defects and calculate the correlators of three defect fields on the sphere and of one defect field on the cross cap. Each of these correlators is presented as the product of a structure constant and the appropriate conformal two- or three-point block. The structure constants are expressed as invariants of ribbon graphs in three-manifolds.

Picard groups in rational conformal field theory

Algebra and representation theory in modular tensor categories can be combined with tools from topological field theory to obtain a deeper understanding of rational conformal field theories in two dimensions: It allows us to establish the existence of sets of consistent correlation functions, to demonstrate some of their properties in a model-independent manner, and to derive explicit expressions for OPE coefficients and coefficients of partition functions in terms of invariants of links in three-manifolds. We show that a Morita class of (symmetric special) Frobenius algebras $A$ in a modular tensor category $\calc$ encodes all data needed to describe the correlators. A Morita-invariant formulation is provided by module categories over $\calc$. Together with a bimodule-valued fiber functor, the system (tensor category + module category) can be described by a weak Hopf algebra. The Picard group of the category $\calc$ can be used to construct examples of symmetric special Frobenius algebras. The Picard group of the category of $A$-bimodules describes the internal symmetries of the theory and allows one to identify generalized Kramers-Wannier dualities.

TFT construction of RCFT correlators II: Unoriented world sheets

A full rational CFT, consistent on all orientable world sheets, can be constructed from the underlying chiral CFT, i.e. a vertex algebra, its representation category C, and the system of chiral blocks, once we select a symmetric special Frobenius algebra A in the category C [I]. Here we show that the construction of [I] can be extended to unoriented world sheets by specifying one additional datum: a reversion on A - an isomorphism from the opposed algebra of A to A that squares to the twist. A given full CFT on oriented surfaces can admit inequivalent reversions, which give rise to different amplitudes on unoriented surfaces, in particular to different Klein bottle amplitudes. We study the classification of reversions, work out the construction of the annulus, Moebius strip and Klein bottle partition functions, and discuss properties of defect lines on non-orientable world sheets. As an illustration, the Ising model is treated in detail.
