Non-equilibrium current and noise in inelastic tunneling through a magnetic atom

In a recent experiment, Hirjibehedin {\it et al.} [Science {\bf 317}, 1199 (2007)] performed inelastic tunneling spectroscopy of a single iron atom absorbed on a nonmagnetic substrate. The observed steps in the differential conductance marked the spin excitation energies. In this Letter, we explain observed nonmonotonicities in the differential conductance by a nonequilibrium population of the atom spin states. Furthermore, we predict super-Poissonian current noise due to this nonequilibrium situation. By introducing an anisotropic relaxation channel we are also able to explain the remarkable absence of nonequilibrium features at certain conductance steps.

Superconducting proximity effect in interacting double-dot systems

We study subgap transport from a superconductor through a double quantum dot with large on-site Coulomb repulsion to two normal leads. Non-local superconducting correlations in the double dot are induced by the proximity to the superconducting lead, detectable in non-local Andreev transport that splits Cooper pairs in locally separated, spin-entangled electrons. We find that the $I$--$V$ characteristics are strongly asymmetric: for a large bias voltage of certain polarity, transport is blocked by populating the double dot with states whose spin symmetry is incompatible with the superconductor. Furthermore, by tuning gate voltages one has access to splitting of the Andreev excitation energies, which is visible in the differential conductance.

Charge and spin dynamics in interacting quantum dots

The transient response of a quantum dot with strong Coulomb interaction to a fast change in the gate potential, as well as the stationary ac-response to a slow harmonic variation of the gate potential are computed by means of a real-time diagrammatic expansion in the tunnel-coupling strength. We find that after a fast switching, the relaxation of charge and spin are governed by a single time constant each, which differ from each other due to Coulomb repulsion. We compare the response to a step potential with the $RC$ time extracted from the ac response.

Interference and interaction effects in adiabatic pumping through quantum dots

In order to investigate the effects of interference and interaction in adiabatic pumping, we consider an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a quantum dot embedded either in one or in both arms. We employ a real-time formalism and we perform an expansion both in the tunnel-coupling strengths between dot and leads and in the pumping frequency, taking into account the Coulomb interaction non perturbatively. We find that pumping in a single-dot AB interferometer has a peristaltic but phase-coherent character. In a double-dot AB interferometer, we find a pumping mechanism that relies purely on quantum mechanical interference and has no classical counterpart.

Non-adiabatic pumping through interacting quantum dots

We study non-adiabatic two-parameter charge and spin pumping through a single-level quantum dot with Coulomb interaction. For the limit of weak tunnel coupling and in the regime of pumping frequencies up to the tunneling rates, $Ω\lesssim Γ/\hbar$, we perform an exact resummation of contributions of all orders in the pumping frequency. As striking non-adiabatic signatures, we find frequency-dependent phase shifts in the charge and spin currents, which allow for an effective single-parameter pumping as well as pure spin without charge currents.

Diagrammatic real-time approach to adiabatic pumping through metallic single-electron devices

We present a real-time diagrammatic formalism to study adiabatic pumping in chains of tunnel-coupled metallic islands. This approach is based on an expansion to linear order in the frequency of the time-dependent parameters and on a systematic perturbation expansion in the tunnel-coupling strength. We apply our formalism to a single-island and a double-island system. In the single-island setup, we find that the first-order contribution in the tunnel-coupling strength is purely due to the renormalization of the charging-energy gap. In the double-island system, we investigate the transition between weak and strong pumping.

Spin-induced charge correlations in transport through interacting quantum dots with ferromagnetic leads

We study the full counting statistics of electronic transport through a single-level quantum dot weakly coupled to two leads, with either one or both of them being ferromagnetic. The interplay of Coulomb interaction and finite spin polarization implies spin-correlation induced charge correlations that give rise to super-Poissonian transport behavior and positive cross correlations of the currents of the two spin species. In the case of two ferromagnetic leads, we analyze the nontrivial dependence of the cumulants on the angle between the polarization directions of the leads. We find diverging second and higher cumulants for spin polarizations approaching unity.

Adiabatic charge and spin pumping through quantum dots with ferromagnetic leads

We study adiabatic pumping of electrons through quantum dots attached to ferromagnetic leads. Hereby we make use of a real-time diagrammatic technique in the adiabatic limit that takes into account strong Coulomb interaction in the dot. We analyze the degree of spin polarization of electrons pumped from a ferromagnet through the dot to a nonmagnetic lead (N-dot-F) as well as the dependence of the pumped charge on the relative leads' magnetization orientations for a spin-valve (F-dot-F) structure. For the former case, we find that, depending on the relative coupling strength to the leads, spin and charge can, on average, be pumped in opposite directions. For the latter case, we find an angular dependence of the pumped charge, that becomes more and more anharmonic for large spin polarization in the leads.

Tunable dynamical channel blockade in double-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometers

We study electronic transport through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with single-level quantum dots embedded in the two arms. The full counting statistics in the shot-noise regime is calculated to first order in the tunnel-coupling strength. The interplay of interference and charging energy in the dots leads to a dynamical channel blockade that is tunable by the magnetic flux penetrating the Aharonov-Bohm ring. We find super-Poissonian behavior with diverging second and higher cumulants when the Aharonov-Bohm flux approaches an integer multiple of the flux quantum.

Non-local Andreev transport through an interacting quantum dot

We investigate sub-gap transport through a single-level quantum dot tunnel coupled to one superconducting and two normal-conducting leads. Despite the tendency of a large charging energy to suppress the equilibrium proximity effect, a finite Andreev current through the dot can be achieved in non-equilibrium situations. We propose two schemes to identify non-local Andreev transport. In one of them, the presence of strong Coulomb interaction leads to negative values of the non-local conductance as a clear signal of non-local Andreev transport.

Real-time diagrammatic approach to transport through interacting quantum dots with normal and superconducting leads

We present a real-time diagrammatic theory for transport through interacting quantum dots tunnel coupled to normal and superconducting leads. Our formulation describes both the equilibrium and non-equilibrium superconducting proximity effect in a quantum dot. We study a three-terminal transistor geometry, consisting of a single-level quantum dot tunnel coupled to two phase-biased superconducting leads and one voltage-biased normal lead. We compute both the Josephson current between the two superconductors and the Andreev current in the normal lead, and analyze their switching on and off as well as transitions between 0- and $π$-states as a function of gate and bias voltage. For the limit of large superconducting gaps in the leads, we describe the formation of Andreev bound states within an exact resummation of all orders in the tunnel coupling to the superconducting leads, and discuss their signature in the non-equilibrium Josephson- and Andreev- current and the quantum-dot charge.

Coulomb-interaction effects in full counting statistics of a quantum-dot Aharonov-Bohm interferometer

We study the effect of Coulomb interaction on the full counting statistics of an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a single-level quantum dot in one arm in the regime of weak dot-lead and lead-lead tunnel couplings. In the absence of Coulomb interaction, the interference processes are of nonresonant nature with an even AB flux dependence and obey bidirectional Poissonian statistics. For large charging energy, the statistic of these processes changes. In addition, processes of resonant nature with an odd flux dependence appear. In the limit of strongly asymmetric tunnel couplings from the dot to the left and right leads, their statistics is found to be strongly super-Poissonian.

Generation and detection of a spin entanglement in nonequilibrium quantum dots

Spin entanglement between two spatially separated electrons can be generated in nonequilibrium interacting quantum dots, coherently coupled to a common lead. In this system entangled two-electron states develop which are Werner states with an imbalance between singlet and triplet probabilities. We propose a multi-terminal, multiply-connected setup for the generation and detection of this imbalance. In particular, we identify a regime in which the formation of spin entanglement leads to a cancellation of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.

Violation of the Wiedemann-Franz Law in a Single-Electron Transistor

We study the influence of Coulomb interaction on the thermoelectric transport coefficients for a metallic single-electron transistor. By performing a perturbation expansion up to second order in the tunnel-barrier conductance, we include sequential and cotunneling processes as well as quantum fluctuations that renormalize the charging energy and the tunnel conductance. We find that Coulomb interaction leads to a strong violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law: the Lorenz ratio becomes gate-voltage dependent for sequential tunneling, and is increased by a factor 9/5 in the cotunneling regime. Finally, we suggest a measurement scheme for an experimental realization.

Real-time renormalization group and cutoff scales in nonequilibrium applied to an arbitrary quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime

We apply the real-time renormalization group (RG) in nonequilibrium to an arbitrary quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime. Within one-loop RG-equations, we include self-consistently the kernel governing the dynamics of the reduced density matrix of the dot. As a result, we find that relaxation and dephasing rates generically cut off the RG flow. In addition, we include all other cutoff scales defined by temperature, energy excitations, frequency, and voltage. We apply the formalism to transport through single molecular magnets, realized by the fully anisotropic Kondo model (with three different exchange couplings J_x, J_y, and J_z) in a magnetic field h_z. We calculate the differential conductance as function of bias voltage V and discuss a quantum phase transition which can be tuned by changing the sign of J_x J_y J_z via the anisotropy parameters. Finally, we calculate the noise S(Omega) at finite frequency Omega for the isotropic Kondo model and find that the dephasing rate determines the height of the shoulders in dS(Ω)/d Omega near Omega=V.

Theory of a Magnetically-Controlled Quantum-Dot Spin Transistor

We examine transport through a quantum dot coupled to three ferromagnetic leads in the regime of weak tunnel coupling. A finite source-drain voltage generates a nonequilibrium spin on the otherwise non-magnetic quantum dot. This spin accumulation leads to magnetoresistance. A ferromagnetic but current-free base electrode influences the quantum-dot spin via incoherent spin-flip processes and coherent spin precession. As the dot spin determines the conductance of the device, this allows for a purely magnetic transistor-like operation. We analyze the effect of both types of processes on the electric current in different geometries.

Non-Equilibrium Josephson and Andreev Current through Interacting Quantum Dots

We present a theory of transport through interacting quantum dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads in the limit of weak tunnel coupling. A Josephson current between two superconducting leads, carried by first-order tunnel processes, can be established by non-equilibrium proximity effect. Both Andreev and Josephson current is suppressed for bias voltages below a threshold set by the Coulomb charging energy. A $π$-transition of the supercurrent can be driven by tuning gate or bias voltages.

Generation of Spin Entanglement in Nonequilibrium Quantum Dots

We propose schemes for generating spatially-separated spin entanglement in systems of two quantum dots with onsite Coulomb repulsion weakly coupled to a joint electron reservoir. An enhanced probability for the formation of spin entanglement is found in nonequilibrium situations with one extra electron on each dot, either in the transient state after rapid changes of the gate voltage, or in the steady state with applied bias voltage. In both cases so-called Werner states with spin singlet fidelity exceeding 1/2 are generated, which indicates entanglement.
