Optimal Regularity for the Stokes Equations on a 2D Wedge Domain Subject to Navier Boundary Conditions

We consider the Stokes equations subject to Navier boundary conditions on a two-dimensional wedge domain with opening angle $θ_0 \in (0,\,π)$. We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions with optimal regularity in an $L^p$-setting. The results are based on optimal regularity results for the Stokes equations subject to perfect slip boundary conditions on a two-dimensional wedge domain that have been obtained by the authors in [15]. Based on a detailed study of the corresponding trace operator on anisotropic Sobolev-Slobodeckij type function spaces on a two-dimensional wedge domain we are able to generalize the results proved in [15] to the case of inhomogeneous boundary conditions. Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Stokes equations subject to (inhomogeneous) Navier boundary conditions are then obtained using a perturbation argument.

Stability Analysis for a Class of Heterogeneous Catalysis Models

We prove stability for a class of heterogeneous catalysis models in the $L_p$-setting. We consider a setting in a finite three-dimensional pore of cylinder-like geometry, with the lateral walls acting as a catalytic surface. Under a reasonable condition on the involved parameters, we show that given equilibria are normally stable, i.e. solutions are attracted at an exponential rate. The potential incidence of instability is discussed as well.

Stable and unstable flow regimes for active fluids in the periodic setting

Depending on the involved physiobiological parameters, stable or unstable behavior in active fluids is observed. In this paper a rigorous analytical justification of (in-)stability within the corresponding regimes is given. In particular, occuring instability for the manifold of ordered polar states caused by self-propulsion is proved. This represents the prerequisite for active turbulence patterns as observed in a number of applications. The approach is carried out in the periodic setting and is based on the generalized principle of linearized (in)-stability related to normally stable and normally hyperbolic equilibria.

Multiplication in Vector-Valued Anisotropic Function Spaces and Applications to Non-Linear Partial Differential Equations

We study multiplication as well as Nemytskij operators in anisotropic vector-valued Besov spaces $B^{s, ω}_p$, Bessel potential spaces $H^{s, ω}_p$, and Sobolev-Slobodeckij spaces $W^{s, ω}_p$. Concerning multiplication we obtain optimal estimates, which constitute generalizations and improvements of known estimates in the isotropic/scalar-valued case. Concerning Nemytskij operators we consider the acting of analytic functions on supercritial anisotropic vector-valued function spaces of the above type. Moreover, we show how the given estimates may be used in order to improve results on quasilinear evolution equations as well as their proofs.

Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations subject to partial slip on uniform $C^{2,1}$-domains in $L_q$-spaces

This note concerns well-posedness of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations on uniform $C^{2,1}$-domains on $L_q$. In particular, classes of non-Helmholtz domains, i.e., domains for which the Helmholtz decomposition does not exist, are adressed. On the one hand, it is proved that the Stokes equations subject to partial slip in general are not well-posed in the standard setting that usually applies for Helmholtz domains. On the other hand, it is proved that under certain reasonable assumptions the Stokes and Navier-Stokes equations subject to partial slip are well-posed in a generalized setting. This setting relies on a generalized version of the Helmholtz decomposition which exists under suitable conditions on the intersection and the sum of gradient and solenoidal fields in $L_q$. The proved well-posedness of the Stokes resolvent problem turns even out to be equivalent to the existence of the generalized Helmholtz decomposition. The presented approach, for instance, includes the sector-like non-Helmholtz domains introduced by Bogovski\uı and Maslennikova as well as further wide classes of uniform $C^{2,1}$-domains.

Optimal Sobolev regularity for the Stokes equations on a 2D wedge domain

In this note we prove that the solution of the stationary and the instationary Stokes equations subject to perfect slip boundary conditions on a 2D wedge domain admits optimal regularity in the $L^p$-setting, i.p. it is $W^{2,p}$ in space. This improves known results in the literature to a large extend. For instance, in [21, Theorem 1.1 and Corollary 3] it is proved that the Laplace and the Stokes operator in the underlying setting have maximal regularity. In that result the range of p admitting $W^{2,p}$ regularity, however, is restricted to the interval $1 0$, depending on the opening angle of the wedge. This note gives a detailed answer to the question, whether the optimal Sobolev regularity extends to the full range $1<p<\infty$. We will show that for the Laplacian this does only hold on a suitable subspace, but, depending on the opening angle of the wedge domain, not for every $p\in(1,\infty)$ on the entire $L^p$-space. On the other hand, for the Stokes operator in the space of solenoidal fields $L^p_σ$ we obtain optimal Sobolev regularity for the full range $1<p<\infty$ and for all opening angles less that $π$. Roughly speaking, this relies on the fact that an existing $ bad$ part of $L^p$ for the Laplacian is complementary to the space of solenoidal vector fields.

$L^p$-theory for a fluid-structure interaction model

We consider a fluid-structure interaction model for an incompressible fluid where the elastic response of the free boundary is given by a damped Kirchhoff plate model. Utilizing the Newton polygon approach, we first prove maximal regularity in $L^p$-Sobolev spaces for a linearized version. Based on this, we show existence and uniqueness of the strong solution of the nonlinear system for small data.

Turbulence in active fluids caused by self-propulsion

A rigoros analytical justification of turbulence observed in active fluids and caused by self-propulsion is presented. We prove existence of unstable wave modes for the generalized Stokes and Navier-Stokes systems by developing an approach in spaces of Fourier transformed Radon measures.

Triebel-Lizorkin-Lorentz spaces and the Navier-Stokes equations

We derive basic properties of Triebel-Lizorkin-Lorentz spaces important in the treatment of PDE. For instance, we prove Triebel-Lizorkin-Lorentz spaces to be of class $\mathcal{HT}$, to have property $(α)$, and to admit a multiplier result of Mikhlin type. By utilizing these properties we prove the Laplace and the Stokes operator to admit a bounded $H^\infty$-calculus. This is finally applied to derive local strong well-posedness for the Navier-Stokes equations on corresponding Triebel-Lizorkin-Lorentz ground spaces.

Global Strong Solutions for a Class of Heterogeneous Catalysis Models

We consider a mathematical model for heterogeneous catalysis in a finite three-dimensional pore of cylinder-like geometry, with the lateral walls acting as a catalytic surface. The system under consideration consists of a diffusion-advection system inside the bulk phase and a reaction-diffusion-sorption system modeling the processes on the catalytic wall and the exchange between bulk and surface. We assume Fickian diffusion with constant coefficients, sorption kinetics with linear growth bound and a network of chemical reactions which possesses a certain triangular structure. Our main result gives sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique global strong $L^2$-solution to this model, thereby extending by now classical results on reaction-diffusion systems to the more complicated case of heterogeneous catalysis.

Analysis of a Living Fluid Continuum Model

Generalized Navier-Stokes equations which were proposed recently to describe active turbulence in living fluids are analyzed rigorously. Results on wellposedness and stability in the $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$-setting are derived. Due to the presence of a Swift-Hohenberg term global wellposedness in a strong setting for arbitrary initial data in $L^2_σ(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is available. Based on the existence of global strong solutions, results on linear and nonlinear (in-) stability for the disordered steady state and the manifold of ordered polar steady states are derived, depending on the involved parameters.

Global well-posedness and stability of electro-kinetic flows

We consider a coupled system of Navier-Stokes and Nernst-Planck equations, describing the evolution of the velocity and the concentration fields of dissolved constituents in an electrolyte solution. Motivated by recent applications in the field of micro- and nanofluidics, we consider the model in such generality that electrokinetic flows are included. This prohibits employing the assumption of electroneutrality of the total solution, which is a common approach in the mathematical literature in order to determine the electrical potential. Therefore we complement the system of mass and momentum balances with a Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential, with the charge density stemming from the concentrations of the ionic species. For the resulting Navier-Stokes-Nernst-Planck-Poisson system we prove the existence of unique local strong solutions in bounded domains in $\R^n$ for any $n\geq2$ as well as the existence of unique global strong solutions and exponential convergence to uniquely determined steady states in two dimensions.
