Breath Figures: Nucleation, Growth, Coalescence, and the Size Distribution of Droplets

The analysis of the size distribution of droplets condensing on a substrate (breath figures) is a test ground for scaling theories. Here, we show that a faithful description of these distributions must explicitly deal with the growth mechanisms of the droplets. This finding establishes a gateway connecting nucleation and growth of the smallest droplets on surfaces to gross features of the evolution of the droplet size distribution.

Fluctuation preserving coarse graining for biochemical systems

Finite stochastic Markov models play a major role for modelling biochemical pathways. Such models are a coarse-grained description of the underlying microscopic dynamics and can be considered mesoscopic. The level of coarse-graining is to a certain extend arbitrary since it depends on the resolution of accomodating measurements. Here, we present a way to simplify such stochastic descriptions, which preserves both the meso-micro and the meso-macro connection. The former is achieved by demanding locality, the latter by considering cycles on the network of states. Using single- and multicycle examples we demonstrate how our new method preserves fluctuations of observables much better than naïve approaches.

Network representations of non-equilibrium steady states: Cycle decompositions, symmetries and dominant paths

Non-equilibrium steady states (NESS) of Markov processes give rise to non-trivial cyclic probability fluxes. Cycle decompositions of the steady state offer an effective description of such fluxes. Here, we present an iterative cycle decomposition exhibiting a natural dynamics on the space of cycles that satisfies detailed balance. Expectation values of observables can be expressed as cycle "averages", resembling the cycle representation of expectation values in dynamical systems. We illustrate our approach in terms of an analogy to a simple model of mass transit dynamics. Symmetries are reflected in our approach by a reduction of the minimal number of cycles needed in the decomposition. These features are demonstrated by discussing a variant of an asymmetric exclusion process (TASEP). Intriguingly, a continuous change of dominant flow paths in the network results in a change of the structure of cycles as well as in discontinuous jumps in cycle weights.

A diffusion-induced transition in the phase separation of binary fluid mixtures subjected to a temperature ramp

Demixing of binary fluids subjected to slow temperature ramps shows repeated waves of nucleation which arise as a consequence of the competition between generation of supersaturation by the temperature ramp and relaxation of supersaturation by diffusive transport and flow. Here, we use an advection-reaction-diffusion model to study the oscillations in the weak- and strong-diffusion regime. There is a sharp transition between the two regimes, which can only be understood based on the probability distribution function of the composition rather than in terms of the average composition. We argue that this transition might be responsible for some yet unclear features of experiments, like the appearance of secondary oscillations and bimodal droplet size distributions.

Particle tracking for polydisperse sedimenting droplets in phase separation

When a binary fluid demixes under a slow temperature ramp, nucleation, coarsening and sedimentation of droplets lead to an oscillatory evolution of the phase separating system. The advection of the sedimenting droplets is found to be chaotic. The flow is driven by density differences between the two phases. Here, we show how image processing can be combined with particle tracking to resolve droplet size and velocity simultaneously. Droplets are used as tracer particles, and the sedimentation velocity is determined. Taking these effects into account, droplets with radii in the range of 4 -- 40 micrometers are detected and tracked. Based on this data we resolve the oscillations in the droplet size distribution which are coupled to the convective flow.

Fermi acceleration and suppression of Fermi acceleration in a time-dependent Lorentz Gas

We study some dynamical properties of a Lorentz gas. We have considered both the static and time dependent boundary. For the static case we have shown that the system has a chaotic component characterized with a positive Lyapunov Exponent. For the time-dependent perturbation we describe the model using a four-dimensional nonlinear map. The behaviour of the average velocity is considered in two situations (i) non-dissipative and (ii) dissipative. Our results show that the unlimited energy growth is observed for the non-dissipative case. However, when dissipation, via damping coefficients, is introduced the senary changes and the unlimited engergy growth is suppressed. The behaviour of the average velocity is described using scaling approach.

Impurity-induced step interactions: a kinetic Monte-Carlo study

A one-dimensional continuum description of growth on vicinal surfaces in the presence of immobile impurities predicts that the impurities can induce step bunching when they suppress the diffusion of adatoms on the surface. In the present communication we verify this prediction by kinetic Monte-Carlo simulations of a two-dimensional solid-on-solid model. We identify the conditions where quasi one-dimensional step flow is stable against island formation or step meandering, and analyse in detail the statistics of the impurity concentration profile. The sign and strength of the impurity-induced step interactions is determined by monitoring the motion of pairs of steps. Assemblies containing up to 20 steps turn out to be unstable towards the emission of single steps. This behavior is traced back to the small value of the effective, impurity-induced attachment asymmetry for adatoms. An analytic estimate for the critical number of steps needed to stabilize a bunch is derived and confirmed by simulations of a one-dimensional model.
