Knot theory and matrix integrals

The large size limit of matrix integrals with quartic potential may be used to count alternating links and tangles. The removal of redundancies amounts to renormalizations of the potential. This extends into two directions: higher genus and the counting of "virtual" links and tangles; and the counting of "coloured" alternating links and tangles. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of the number of tangles as the number of crossings goes to infinity.

Correlation Functions of Harish-Chandra Integrals over the Orthogonal and the Symplectic Groups

The Harish-Chandra correlation functions, i.e. integrals over compact groups of invariant monomials prod tr{X^{p_1} Omega Y^{q_1} Omega^dagger X^{p_2} ... with the weight exp tr{X Omega Y Omega^dagger} are computed for the orthogonal and symplectic groups. We proceed in two steps. First, the integral over the compact group is recast into a Gaussian integral over strictly upper triangular complex matrices (with some additional symmetries), supplemented by a summation over the Weyl group. This result follows from the study of loop equations in an associated two-matrix integral and may be viewed as the adequate version of Duistermaat-Heckman's theorem for our correlation function integrals. Secondly, the Gaussian integration over triangular matrices is carried out and leads to compact determinantal expressions.

On some integrals over the U(N) unitary group and their large N limit

The integral over the U(N) unitary group $I=\int DU \exp\Tr A U B U^\dagger$ is reexamined. Various approaches and extensions are first reviewed. The second half of the paper deals with more recent developments: relation with integrable Toda lattice hierarchy, diagrammatic expansion and combinatorics, and on what they teach us on the large $N$ limit of $\log I$.

On FPL configurations with four sets of nested arches

The problem of counting the number of Fully Packed Loop (FPL) configurations with four sets of a,b,c,d nested arches is addressed. It is shown that it may be expressed as the problem of enumeration of tilings of a domain of the triangular lattice with a conic singularity. After reexpression in terms of non-intersecting lines, the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot theorem leads to a formula as a sum of determinants. This is made quite explicit when min(a,b,c,d)=1 or 2. We also find a compact determinant formula which generates the numbers of configurations with b=d.

A Bijection between classes of Fully Packed Loops and Plane Partitions

It has recently been observed empirically that the number of FPL configurations with 3 sets of a, b and c nested arches equals the number of plane partitions in a box of size a x b x c. In this note, this result is proved by constructing explicitly the bijection between these FPL and plane partitions.

Matrix Integrals and the Generation and Counting of Virtual Tangles and Links

Virtual links are generalizations of classical links that can be represented by links embedded in a ``thickened'' surface $Σ\times I$, product of a Riemann surface of genus $h$ with an interval. In this paper, we show that virtual alternating links and tangles are naturally associated with the $1/N^2$ expansion of an integral over $N\times N$ complex matrices. We suggest that it is sufficient to count the equivalence classes of these diagrams modulo ordinary (planar) flypes. To test this hypothesis, we use an algorithm coding the corresponding Feynman diagrams by means of permutations that generates virtual diagrams up to 6 crossings and computes various invariants. Under this hypothesis, we use known results on matrix integrals to get the generating functions of virtual alternating tangles of genus 1 to 5 up to order 10 (i.e.\ 10 real crossings). The asymptotic behavior for $n$ large of the numbers of links and tangles of genus $h$ and with $n$ crossings is also computed for $h=1,2,3$ and conjectured for general $h$.

Boundary conditions in charge conjugate sl(N) WZW theories

We compute the representations (``nimreps'') of the fusion algebra of affine sl(N), which determine the boundary conditions of sl(N) WZW theories twisted by the charge conjugation. This is done following two procedures, one of general validity, the other specific to the problem at hand. The problem is related to the classical problem of decomposition of the fundamental representations of sl(N) onto representations of $B_l=so(2l+1)$ or $C_l =sp(2l)$ algebras. The relevant nimreps and their diagonalisation matrix are thus expressed in terms of modular data of the affine B or C algebras

The many faces of Ocneanu cells

We define generalised chiral vertex operators covariant under the Ocneanu ``double triangle algebra'' {\cal A}, a novel quantum symmetry intrinsic to a given rational 2-d conformal field theory. This provides a chiral approach, which, unlike the conventional one, makes explicit various algebraic structures encountered previously in the study of these theories and of the associated critical lattice models, and thus allows their unified treatment. The triangular Ocneanu cells, the 3j-symbols of the weak Hopf algebra {\cal A}, reappear in several guises. With {\cal A} and its dual algebra {hat A} one associates a pair of graphs, G and {\tilde G}. While G are known to encode complete sets of conformal boundary states, the Ocneanu graphs {\tilde G} classify twisted torus partition functions. The fusion algebra of the twist operators provides the data determining {\hat A}. The study of bulk field correlators in the presence of twists reveals that the Ocneanu graph quantum symmetry gives also an information on the field operator algebra.

Conformal Boundary Conditions and what they teach us

The question of boundary conditions in conformal field theories is discussed, in the light of recent progress. Two kinds of boundary conditions are examined, along open boundaries of the system, or along closed curves or ``seams''. Solving consistency conditions known as Cardy equation is shown to amount to the algebraic problem of finding integer valued representations of (one or two copies of) the fusion algebra. Graphs encode these boundary conditions in a natural way, but are also relevant in several aspects of physics ``in the bulk''. Quantum algebras attached to these graphs contain information on structure constants of the operator algebra, on the Boltzmann weights of the corresponding integrable lattice models etc. Thus the study of boundary conditions in Conformal Field Theory offers a new perspective on several old physical problems and offers an explicit realisation of recent mathematical concepts.

Generalised twisted partition functions

We consider the set of partition functions that result from the insertion of twist operators compatible with conformal invariance in a given 2D Conformal Field Theory (CFT). A consistency equation, which gives a classification of twists, is written and solved in particular cases. This generalises old results on twisted torus boundary conditions, gives a physical interpretation of Ocneanu's algebraic construction, and might offer a new route to the study of properties of CFT.

BCFT: from the boundary to the bulk

The study of boundary conditions in rational conformal field theories is not only physically important. It also reveals a lot on the structure of the theory ``in the bulk''. The same graphs classify both the torus and the cylinder partition functions and provide data on their hidden ``quantum symmetry''. The Ocneanu triangular cells -- the 3j-symbols of these symmetries, admit various interpretations and make a link between different problems.

On the Counting of Colored Tangles

The connection between matrix integrals and links is used to define matrix models which count alternating tangles in which each closed loop is weighted with a factor n, i.e. may be regarded as decorated with n possible colors. For n=2, the corresponding matrix integral is that recently solved in the study of the random lattice six-vertex model. The generating function of alternating 2-color tangles is provided in terms of elliptic functions, expanded to 16-th order (16 crossings) and its asymptotic behavior is given.

On the Classification of Bulk and Boundary Conformal Field Theories

The classification of rational conformal field theories is reconsidered from the standpoint of boundary conditions. Solving Cardy's equation expressing the consistency condition on a cylinder is equivalent to finding integer valued representations of the fusion algebra. A complete solution not only yields the admissible boundary conditions but also gives valuable information on the bulk properties.

From CFT's to Graphs

In this paper, we pursue the discussion of the connections between rational conformal field theories (CFT) and graphs. We generalize our recent work on the relations of operator product algebra (OPA) structure constants of $sl(2)\,$ theories with the Pasquier algebra attached to the graph. We show that in a variety of CFT built on $sl(n)\,$ -- typically conformal embeddings and orbifolds, similar considerations enable one to write a linear system satisfied by the matrix elements of the Pasquier algebra in terms of conformal data -- quantum dimensions and fusion coefficients. In some cases, this provides a sufficient information for the determination of all the eigenvectors of an adjacency matrix, and hence of a graph.
