Light-Front Quantum Chromodynamics: A framework for the analysis of hadron physics

An outstanding goal of physics is to find solutions that describe hadrons in the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). For this goal, the light-front Hamiltonian formulation of QCD (LFQCD) is a complementary approach to the well-established lattice gauge method. LFQCD offers access to the hadrons' nonperturbative quark and gluon amplitudes, which are directly testable in experiments at existing and future facilities. We present an overview of the promises and challenges of LFQCD in the context of unsolved issues in QCD that require broadened and accelerated investigation. We identify specific goals of this approach and address its quantifiable uncertainties.

Ab initio nonperturbative calculation of physical observables in light-front dynamics. Application to the Yukawa model

We present a coherent and operational strategy to calculate, in a nonperturbative way, physical observables in light-front dynamics. This strategy is based on the decomposition of the state vector of any compound system in Fock components, and on the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, together with the so-called Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme. We apply our approach to the calculation of the electromagnetic form factors of a fermion in the Yukawa model, in the nontrivial three-body Fock space truncation, for rather large values of the coupling constant. We find that, once the renormalization conditions are properly taken into account, the form factors do not depend on the regularization scale, when the latter is much larger than the physical masses. We then extend the Fock space by including antifermion degrees of freedom.

Double site-bond percolation model for biomaterial implants

We present a double site-bond percolation model to account, on the one hand, for the vascularization and/or resorption of biomaterial implant in bones and, on the other hand, for its mechanical continuity. The transformation of the implant into osseous material, and the dynamical formation/destruction of this osseous material is accounted for by creation and destruction of links and sites in two, entangled, networks. We identify the relevant parameters to describe the implant and its evolution, and separate their biological or chemical origin from their physical one. We classify the various phenomena in the two regimes, percolating or non-percolating, of the networks. We present first numerical results in two dimensions.

The fine-tuning problem revisited in the light of the Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme

We re-analyse the perturbative radiative corrections to the Higgs mass within the Standard Model in the light of the Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme. This scheme naturally leads to completely finite corrections, depending on an arbitrary dimensionless scale. This formulation avoids very large individual corrections to the Higgs mass. In other words, it is a confirmation that the so-called fine-tuning problem in the Standard Model is just an artefact of the regularization scheme and should not lead to any physical interpretation in terms of the energy scale at which new physics should show up, nor to the appearance of a new symmetry. We analyse the characteristic physical scales relevant for the description of these radiative corrections.

The pion wave function in covariant light-front dynamics

The structure of the pion wave function in the relativistic constituent quark model is investigated in the explicitly covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. We calculate the two relativistic components of the pion wave function in a simple one-gluon exchange model and investigate various physical observables: decay constant, charge radius, electromagnetic and transition form factors. We discuss the influence of the full relativistic structure of the pion wave function for an overall good description of all these observables, including both low and high momentum scales.

Nonperturbative renormalization in light-front dynamics and applications

We present a general framework to calculate the properties of relativistic compound systems from the knowledge of an elementary Hamiltonian. Our framework provides a well-controlled nonperturbative calculational scheme which can be systematically improved. The state vector of a physical system is calculated in light-front dynamics. From the general properties of this form of dynamics, the state vector can be further decomposed in well-defined Fock components. In order to control the convergence of this expansion, we advocate the use of the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. In this formulation, the state vector is projected on an arbitrary light-front plane $ω\cd x=0$ defined by a light-like four-vector $ω$. This enables us to control any violation of rotational invariance due to the truncation of the Fock expansion. We then present a general nonperturbative renormalization scheme in order to avoid field-theoretical divergences which may remain uncancelled due to this truncation. This general framework has been applied to a large variety of models. As a starting point, we consider QED for the two-body Fock space truncation and calculate the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron. We show that it coincides, in this approximation, with the well-known Schwinger term. Then we investigate the properties of a purely scalar system in the three-body approximation, where we highlight the role of antiparticle degrees of freedom. As a non-trivial example of our framework, we calculate the structure of a physical fermion in the Yukawa model, for the three-body Fock space truncation (but still without antifermion contributions). We finally show why our approach is also well-suited to describe effective field theories like chiral perturbation theory in the baryonic sector.

Nonperturbative calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment in the Yukawa model within truncated Fock space

Within the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, we calculate the state vector of a physical fermion in the Yukawa model. The state vector is decomposed in Fock sectors and we consider the first three ones: the single constituent fermion, the constituent fermion coupled to one scalar boson, and the constituent fermion coupled to two scalar bosons. This last three-body sector generates nontrivial and nonperturbative contributions to the state vector, which are calculated numerically. Field-theoretical divergences are regularized using Pauli-Villars fermion and boson fields. Physical observables can be unambiguously deduced using a systematic renormalization scheme we have developed previously. As a first application, we consider the anomalous magnetic moment of the physical fermion.

Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme, Pauli-Villars subtraction, and light-front dynamics

We show how the recently proposed Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme can lead to extensions of singular distributions which are reminiscent of the Pauli-Villars subtraction. However, at variance with the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme, no infinite mass limit is performed in this scheme. As an illustration of this mechanism, we consider the calculation of the self-energy in second order perturbation theory in the Yukawa model, within the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. We show in particular how rotational invariance is preserved in this scheme.

Taylor-Lagrange renormalization scheme. Application to light-front dynamics

The recently proposed renormalization scheme based on the definition of field operators as operator valued distributions acting on specific test functions is shown to be very convenient in explicit calculations of physical observables within the framework of light-front dynamics. We first recall the main properties of this procedure based on identities relating the test functions to their Taylor remainder of any order expressed in terms of Lagrange's formulae, hence the name given to this scheme. We thus show how it naturally applies to the calculation of state vectors of physical systems in the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics. As an example, we consider the case of the Yukawa model in the simple two-body Fock state truncation.

Chiral effective field theory on the light front

We propose a new approach to describe baryonic structure in terms of an effective chiral Lagrangian. The state vector of a baryon is defined on the light front of general position ω. x=0, where ωis an arbitrary light-like four vector. It is then decomposed in Fock components including an increasing number of pions. The maximal number of particles in the state vector is mapped out to the order of decomposition of the chiral effective Lagrangian to have a consistent calculation of both the state vector and the effective Lagrangian. An adequate Fock sector dependent renormalization scheme is used in order to restrict all contributions within the truncated Fock space. To illustrate our formalism, we calculate the anomalous magnetic moment of a fermion in the Yukawa model in the three-body truncation. We present perspectives opened by the use of a new regularization scheme based on the properties of fields as distributions acting on specific test functions.

Nonperturbative calculation of the anomalous magnetic moment in the Yukawa model

Within the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, we calculate the state vector of a fermion coupled to identical scalar bosons (the Yukawa model). The state vector is decomposed in Fock sectors and we consider the first three ones: a single fermion, a fermion coupled to one boson, and a fermion coupled to two bosons. This last three-body sector generates nontrivial and nonperturbative contributions to the state vector, and these contributions are calculated with no approximations. The divergences of the amplitudes are regularized using Pauli-Villars fermion and boson fields. Physical observables can be unambiguously deduced using a systematic renormalization scheme we developed. This renormalization scheme is a necessary condition in order to avoid uncancelled divergences when Fock space is truncated. As an example, we present preliminary numerical results for the anomalous magnetic moment of a fermion in the Yukawa model.

Systematic renormalization scheme in light-front dynamics with Fock space truncation

Within the framework of the covariant formulation of light-front dynamics, we develop a general non-perturbative renormalization scheme based on the Fock decomposition of the state vector and its truncation. The counterterms and bare parameters needed to renormalize the theory depend on the Fock sectors. We present a general strategy in order to calculate these quantities, as well as state vectors of physical systems, in a truncated Fock space. The explicit dependence of our formalism on the orientation of the light front plane is essential in order to analyze the structure of the counterterms. We apply our formalism to the two-body (one fermion and one boson) truncation in the Yukawa model and in QED, and to the three-body truncation in a scalar model. In QED, we recover analytically, without any perturbative expansion, the renormalization of the electric charge, according to the requirements of the Ward identity.

Regularization of fermion self-energy and electromagnetic vertex in Yukawa model within light-front dynamics

In light-front dynamics, the regularization of amplitudes by traditional cutoffs imposed on the transverse and longitudinal components of particle momenta corresponds to restricting the integration volume by a non-rotationally invariant domain. The result depends not only on the size of this domain (i.e., on the cutoff values), but also on its orientation determined by the position of the light-front plane. Explicitly covariant formulation of light front dynamics allows us to parameterize the latter dependence in a very transparent form. If we decompose the regularized amplitude in terms of independent invariant amplitudes, extra (non-physical) terms should appear, with spin structures which explicitly depend on the orientation of the light front plane. The number of form factors, i.e., the coefficients of this decomposition, therefore also increases. The spin-1/2 fermion self-energy is determined by three scalar functions, instead of the two standard ones, while for the elastic electromagnetic vertex the number of form factors increases from two to five. In the present paper we calculate perturbatively all these form factors in the Yukawa model. Then we compare the results obtained in the two following ways: (i) by using the light front dynamics graph technique rules directly; (ii) by integrating the corresponding Feynman amplitudes in terms of the light front variables. For each of these methods, we use two types of regularization: the transverse and longitudinal cutoffs, and the Pauli-Villars regularization. In the latter case, the dependence of amplitudes on the light front plane orientation vanishes completely provided enough Pauli-Villars subtractions are made.

Non-perturbative renormalization in Light Front Dynamics with Fock space truncation

Within the framework of the Covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, we develop a general non-perturbative renormalization scheme based on the Fock decomposition of the state vector and its truncation. The explicit dependence of our formalism on the orientation of the light front is essential in order to analyze the structure of the counterterms and bare parameters needed to renormalize the theory. We present here a general strategy to determine the dependence of these quantities on the Fock sectors. We apply our formalism to QED for the two-body (one fermion and one boson) truncation and recover analytically, without any perturbative expansion, the renormalization of the electric charge according to the requirements of the Ward Identity.

Renormalized nonperturbative fermion model in Covariant Light Front Dynamics

Within the framework of the covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, we develop a nonperturbative renormalization scheme in the fermion model supposing that the composite fermion is a superposition of the "bare" fermion and a fermion+boson state. We first assume the constituent boson to be spinless. Then we address the case of gauge bosons in the Feynman and in the Light-Cone gauges. For all these cases the fermion state vector and the necessary renormalization counterterms are calculated analytically. It turns out that in Light-Front Dynamics, to restore the rotational invariance, an extra counterterm is needed, having no any analogue in Feynman approach. For gauge bosons the results obtained in the two gauges are compared with each other. In general, the number of spin components of the two-body (fermion+boson) wave function depends on the gauge. But due to the two-body Fock space truncation, only one non-zero component survives for each gauge. And moreover, the whole solutions for the state vector, found for the Feynman and Light-Cone gauges, are the same (except for the normalization factor). The counterterms are however different

Nonperturbative renormalization in a scalar model within Light-Front Dynamics

Within the covariant formulation of Light-Front Dynamics, in a scalar model with the interaction Hamiltonian $H=-gψ^{2}(x)ϕ(x)$, we calculate nonperturbatively the renormalized state vector of a scalar "nucleon" in a truncated Fock space containing the $N$, $Nπ$ and $Nππ$ sectors. The model gives a simple example of non-perturbative renormalization which is carried out numerically. Though the mass renormalization $δm^2$ diverges logarithmically with the cutoff $L$, the Fock components of the "physical" nucleon are stable when $L\to\infty$.

The charge and mass perturbative renormalization in explicitly covariant LFD

In several preceding studies, the explicitly covariant formulation of light front dynamics was developed and applied to many observables. In the present study we show how in this approach the renormalization procedure for the first radiative correction can be carried out in a standard way, after separating out the contributions depending on the orientation of the light-front plane. We calculate the renormalized QED vertices $γe^-\to e^-$ and $e^+e^-\to γ$ and the electron self-energy and recover, in a straightforward way, the well known analytical results obtained in the Feynman approach.

Explicitly Covariant Light-Front Dynamics and Relativistic Few-Body Systems

The wave function of a composite system is defined in relativity on a space-time surface. In the explicitly covariant light-front dynamics, reviewed in the present article, the wave functions are defined on the plane $ω\cd x=0$, where $ω$ is an arbitrary four-vector with $ω^2=0$. The standard non-covariant approach is recovered as a particular case for $ω= (1,0,0,-1)$. Using the light-front plane is of crucial importance, while the explicit covariance gives strong advantages emphasized through all the review. The properties of the relativistic few-body wave functions are discussed in detail and are illustrated by examples in a solvable model. The three-dimensional graph technique for the calculation of amplitudes in the covariant light-front perturbation theory is presented. The structure of the electromagnetic amplitudes is studied. We investigate the ambiguities which arise in any approximate light-front calculations, and which lead to a non-physical dependence of the electromagnetic amplitude on the orientation of the light-front plane. The elastic and transition form factors free from these ambiguities are found for spin 0, 1/2 and 1 systems. The formalism is applied to the calculation of the relativistic wave functions of two-nucleon systems (deuteron, scattering state), with particular attention to the role of their new components in the deuteron elastic and electrodisintegration form factors and to their connection with meson exchange currents. Straigthforward applications to the pion and nucleon form factors and the $ρ-π$ transition are also made.
