Long-Range Energy-Level Interaction in Small Metallic Particles

We consider the energy level statistics of non-interacting electrons which diffuse in a $ d $-dimensional disordered metallic conductor of characteristic Thouless energy $ E_c. $ We assume that the level distribution can be written as the Gibbs distribution of a classical one-dimensional gas of fictitious particles with a pairwise additive interaction potential $ f(\varepsilon ). $ We show that the interaction which is consistent with the known correlation function of pairs of energy levels is a logarithmic repulsion for level separations $ \varepsilon E_c, $ $ f(\varepsilon ) $ vanishes as a power law in $ \varepsilon /E_c $ with exponents $ -{1 \over 2},-2, $ and $ -{3 \over 2} $ for $ d=1,2, $ and 3, respectively. While for $ d=1,2 $ the energy-level interaction is always repulsive, in three dimensions there is long-range level attraction after the short-range logarithmic repulsion.

Critical quantum chaos and the one dimensional Harper model

We study the quasiperiodic Harper's model in order to give further support for a possible universality of the critical spectral statistics. At the mobility edge we numerically obtain a scale-invariant distribution of the bands $S$, which is closely described by a semi-Poisson $P(S)=4S \exp(-2S)$ curve. The $\exp (-2S)$ tail appears when the mobility edge is approached from the metal while $P(S)$ is asymptotically log-normal for the insulator. The multifractal critical density of states also leads to a sub-Poisson linear number variance $Σ_{2}(E)\propto 0.041E$.

Parametric statistics of the scattering matrix: From metallic to insulating quasi-unidimensional disordered systems

We investigate the statistical properties of the scattering matrix $S$ describing the electron transport through quasi-one dimensional disordered systems. For weak disorder (metallic regime), the energy dependence of the phase shifts of $S$ is found to yield the same universal parametric correlations as those characterizing chaotic Hamiltonian eigenvalues driven by an external parameter. This is analyzed within a Brownian-motion model for $S$, which is directly related to the distribution of the Wigner-Smith delay time matrix. For large disorder (localized regime), transport is dominated by resonant tunneling and the universal behavior disappears. A model based on a simplified description of the localized wave functions qualitatively explains our numerical results. In the insulator, the parametric correlation of the phase shift velocities follows the energy-dependent autocorrelator of the Wigner time. The Wigner time and the conductance are correlated in the metal and in the insulator.

$h/2e$--Oscillations for Correlated Electron Pairs in Disordered Mesoscopic Rings

The full spectrum of two interacting electrons in a disordered mesoscopic one--dimensional ring threaded by a magnetic flux is calculated numerically. For ring sizes far exceeding the one--particle localization length $L_1$ we find several $h/2e$--periodic states whose eigenfunctions exhibit a pairing effect. This represents the first direct observation of interaction--assisted coherent pair propagation, the pair being delocalized on the scale of the whole ring.

Scaling in Interaction-Assisted Coherent Transport

The pair localization length $L_2$ of two interacting electrons in one--dimensional disordered systems is studied numerically. Using two direct approaches, we find $L_2 \propto L_1^α$, where $L_1$ is the one-electron localization length and $α\approx 1.65$. This demonstrates the enhancement effect proposed by Shepelyansky, but the value of $α$ differs from previous estimates ($α=2$) in the disorder range considered. We explain this discrepancy using a scaling picture recently introduced by Imry and taking into account a more accurate distribution than previously assumed for the overlap of one-electron wavefunctions.

Universal Quantum Signatures of Chaos in Ballistic Transport

The conductance of a ballistic quantum dot (having chaotic classical dynamics and being coupled by ballistic point contacts to two electron reservoirs) is computed on the single assumption that its scattering matrix is a member of Dyson's circular ensemble. General formulas are obtained for the mean and variance of transport properties in the orthogonal (beta=1), unitary (beta=2), and symplectic (beta=4) symmetry class. Applications include universal conductance fluctuations, weak localization, sub-Poissonian shot noise, and normal-metal-superconductor junctions. The complete distribution P(g) of the conductance g is computed for the case that the coupling to the reservoirs occurs via two quantum point contacts with a single transmitted channel. The result P(g)=g^(-1+beta/2) is qualitatively different in the three symmetry classes. ***Submitted to Europhysics Letters.****
