A multidimensional study of the structure function ratio $σ_{LT'}/σ_{0}$ from hard exclusive $π^+$ electro-production off protons in the GPD regime

A multidimensional extraction of the structure function ratio $σ_{LT'}/σ_{0}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n π^+$ reaction above the resonance region has been performed. The study was done based on beam-spin asymmetry measurements using a 10.6 GeV incident electron beam on a liquid-hydrogen target and the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Lab. The measurements focus on the very forward regime ($t/Q^{2}$ $\ll$ 1) with a wide kinematic range of $x_{B}$ in the valence regime (0.17 $<$ $x_{B}$ $<$ 0.55), and virtualities $Q^{2}$ ranging from 1.5 GeV$^{2}$ up to 6 GeV$^{2}$. The results and their comparison to theoretical models based on Generalized Parton Distributions demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd GPDs and the directly related tensor charge of the nucleon. In addition, the data is compared to an extension of a Regge formalism at high photon virtualities. It was found that the Regge model provides a better description at low $Q^{2}$, while the GPD model is more appropriate at high $Q^{2}$.

Unique Access to u-Channel Physics: Exclusive Backward-Angle Omega Meson Electroproduction

Backward-angle meson electroproduction above the resonance region, which was previously ignored, is anticipated to offer unique access to the three quark plus sea component of the nucleon wave function. In this letter, we present the first complete separation of the four electromagnetic structure functions above the resonance region in exclusive omega electroproduction off the proton, e + p -> e' + p + omega, at central Q^2 values of 1.60, 2.45 GeV^2 , at W = 2.21 GeV. The results of our pioneering -u ~ -u min study demonstrate the existence of a unanticipated backward-angle cross section peak and the feasibility of full L/T/LT/TT separations in this never explored kinematic territory. At Q^2 =2.45 GeV^2 , the observed dominance of sigma_T over sigma_L, is qualitatively consistent with the collinear QCD description in the near-backward regime, in which the scattering amplitude factorizes into a hard subprocess amplitude and baryon to meson transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs): universal non-perturbative objects only accessible through backward angle kinematics.

Hard exclusive pion electroproduction at backward angles with CLAS

We report on the first measurement of cross sections for exclusive deeply virtual pion electroproduction off the proton, $e p \to e^\prime n π^+$, above the resonance region at backward pion center-of-mass angles. The $φ^*_π$-dependent cross sections were measured, from which we extracted three combinations of structure functions of the proton. Our results are compatible with calculations based on nucleon-to-pion transition distribution amplitudes (TDAs) and shed new light on nucleon structure.

Unitarity constraints on neutral pion electroproduction

At large virtuality $Q^2$, the coupling to the vector meson production channels provides us with a natural explanation of the surprisingly large cross section of the neutral pion electroproduction recently measured at Jefferson Laboratory, without destroying the good agreement between the Regge pole model and the data at the real photon point. Elastic rescattering of the $π^0$ provides us with a way to explain why the node, that appears at $t\sim -0.5$ GeV$^2$ at the real photon point, disappears as soon as $Q^2$ differs from zero.

Photodisintegration of $^4$He into p+t

The two-body photodisintegration of $^4$He into a proton and a triton has been studied using the CEBAF Large-Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Laboratory. Real photons produced with the Hall-B bremsstrahlung-tagging system in the energy range from 0.35 to 1.55 GeV were incident on a liquid $^4$He target. This is the first measurement of the photodisintegration of $^4$He above 0.4 GeV. The differential cross sections for the $γ$$^4$He$\to pt$ reaction have been measured as a function of photon-beam energy and proton-scattering angle, and are compared with the latest model calculations by J.-M. Laget. At 0.6-1.2 GeV, our data are in good agreement only with the calculations that include three-body mechanisms, thus confirming their importance. These results reinforce the conclusion of our previous study of the three-body breakup of $^3$He that demonstrated the great importance of three-body mechanisms in the energy region 0.5-0.8 GeV .

Unitary constraints on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering

At moderately low momentum transfer (-t up to 1 GeV^2) the coupling to the vector meson production channels gives the dominant contribution to real Compton and deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). Starting from a Regge Pole approach that successfully describes vector meson production, the singular part of the corresponding box diagrams (where the intermediate vector meson-baryon pair propagates on-shell) is evaluated without any further assumptions (unitarity). Such a treatment explains not only the unexpectedly large DVCS unpolarized cross section that has been recently measured at Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), but also all the beam spin and charge asymmetries that has been measured at JLab and Hermes, without explicit need of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD). The issue of the relationship between the two approaches is addressed.

Rescattering in Meson Photoproduction off Few Body Systems

Exclusive reactions induced at high momentum transfer in few body systems provide us with an original way to study the production and propagation of hadrons in cold nuclear matter. In very well defined parts of the phase space, the reaction amplitude develops a logarithmic singularity. It is on solid ground since it depends only on on-shell elementary amplitudes and on low momentum components of the nuclear wave function. This is the best window to study the propagation of exotic configurations of hadrons such as, for instance, the onset of color transparency. It may appear earlier in meson photo-production reactions, more particularly in the strange sector, than in more classical quasi elastic scattering of electrons. More generally, those reactions provide us with the best tool to determine the cross section of the scattering of various hadrons (strange particles, vector mesons) from the nucleon and to access the production of possible exotic states.

The electro-disintegration of few body systems revisited

Recent studies of the electro-disintegration of the few body systems at JLab have revived the field. Not only recoil momentum distributions have been determined in a single shot. But also they confirm that the diagrammatic approach, which I developed 25 years ago, is relevant to analyze them, provided that the Nucleon-Nucleon scattering amplitude, determined in the same energy range, is used. They provide us with a solid starting point to address the issue of the propagation of exotic components of hadrons in nuclear matter

Exclusive electromagnetic production of strangeness on the nucleon : review of recent data in a Regge approach

In view of the numerous experimental results recently released, we provide in this letter an update on the performance of our simple Regge model for strangeness electroproduction on the nucleon. Without refitting any parameters, a decent description of all measured observables and channels is achieved. We also give predictions for spin transfer observables, recently measured at Jefferson Lab which have high sensitivity to discriminate between different theoretical approaches.

The photoproduction of vector mesons

At high energy, the photoproduction or electroproduction of Vector Mesons allow to prepare a beam of quark-antiquark pairs of a given flavor. At high momentum transfer, the study of the scattering of these pairs on a nucleon opens up an original window on the quark-gluon structure of hadronic matter, which may eventually shed light on its gluonic content, on correlations between quarks and on the van der Walls part of the interaction between hadrons.

Quark correlations and gluon propagators in elastic vector meson production

We study the behavior of the differential cross section for vector meson photoproduction at large momentum transfer in the two-gluon exchange model. We focus on the treatment of two-quark correlation function in the proton and on gluon propagators with a dynamically generated mass. We find that only the large t region is sensitive to the particular details of these inputs.

Strangeness Production by Electromagnetic and Hadronic Probes

After pioneering works on hypernuclei, strangeness production mechanisms have been studied in hadron collisions and photoreactions in the sixties. Recent experiments at SATURNE and COSY, in the hadronic sector, as well as ELSA and JLab, in the electromagnetic sector, have confirmed our basic ideas on the reaction mechanisms. In the near future, strangeness production at JLab, HERMES and COMPASS may prove to be a powerful tool to study hadronic matter.

Electroproduction of strangeness above the resonance region

A simple and elegant model, based on Reggeized t-channel exchanges is succesful in reproducing the main features of all existing data of the reactions ep->eKLambda and ep->eKSigma. In particular, the original way gauge invariance is taken into account is found to be essential to describe the ratio between the Coulomb and the Transverse cross-sections at large Q2 that has been measured recently at JLab.
