Quantum Phase Transition in Ultracold 87Rb Atom Gas with Radiant Field

A second-order quantum phase transition in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates of 87Rb atoms coupled by a quantized radiant field is revealed explicitly in terms of the energy spectrum which is obtained in the thermodynamic limit and is controllable by the coupling parameter between the atom and field. The scaling behavior of the collective excitation modes at the critical transition point is seen to be in the same universality class as that of the Dicke model. It is also demonstrated that the quantum phase transition is realizable below the critical temperature of BEC and can be detected experimentally by measuring the abrupt change of atom population imbalance.

Quantum Phase Transition in Finite-Size Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick Model

Lipkin model of arbitrary particle-number N is studied in terms of exact differential-operator representation of spin-operators from which we obtain the low-lying energy spectrum with the instanton method of quantum tunneling. Our new observation is that the well known quantum phase transition can also occur in the finite-N model only if N is an odd-number. We furthermore demonstrate a new type of quantum phase transition characterized by level-crossing which is induced by the geometric phase interference and is marvelously periodic with respect to the coupling parameter. Finally the conventional quantum phase transition is understood intuitively from the tunneling formulation in the thermodynamic limit.

Ground-state properties of one-dimensional ultracold Bose gases in a hard-wall trap

We investigate the ground state of the system of N bosons enclosed in a hard-wall trap interacting via a repulsive or attractive $δ$-function potential. Based on the Bethe ansatz method, the explicit ground state wave function is derived and the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations are solved numerically for the full physical regime from the Tonks limit to the strongly attractive limit. It is shown that the solution takes different form in different regime. We also evaluate the one body density matrix and second-order correlation function of the ground state for finite systems. In the Tonks limit the density profiles display the Fermi-like behavior, while in the strongly attractive limit the Bosons form a bound state of N atoms corresponding to the N-string solution. The density profiles show the continuous crossover behavior in the entire regime. Further the correlation function indicates that the Bose atoms bunch closer as the interaction constant decreases.

Finite Temperature Tunneling and Phase Transitions in SU(2)-Gauge Theory

A pure Yang-Mills theory extended by addition of a quartic term is considered in order to study the transition from the quantum tunneling regime to that of classical, i.e. thermal, behaviour. The periodic field configurations are found, which interpolate between the vacuum and sphaleron field configurations. It is shown by explicit calculation that only smooth second order transitions occur for all permissible values of the parameter $Ł$ introduced with the quartic term. The theory is one of the rare cases which can be handled analytically.

Photon-assisted electron transmission resonance through a quantum well with spin-orbit coupling

Using the effective-mass approximation and Floquet theory, we study the electron transmission over a quantum well in semiconductor heterostructures with Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and an applied oscillation field. It is demonstrated by the numerical evaluations that Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling eliminates the spin degeneracy and leads to the splitting of asymmetric Fano-type resonance peaks in the conductivity. In turn, the splitting of Fano-type resonance induces the spin- polarization-dependent electron-current. The location and line shape of Fano-type resonance can be controlled by adjusting the oscillation frequency and the amplitude of external field as well. These interesting features may be a very useful basis for devising tunable spin filters.

Measurement Induced Dephasing and Suppression of Persistent Current in a Lattice Ring

We investigate the effect of measurement on the persistent current density in a lattice ring penetrated by an Aharonov-Bohm flux and coupled to a quantum dot which is continuously monitored by a point contact detector. It is demonstrated by explicit analysis of the time-evolution of current density that the persistent current in the lattice ring is suppressed completely due to dephasing of quantum states induced by an analogous which-way-measurment that whether or not the electron is localized on the quantum dot. Practical experiments to observe the measurment induced dephasing is proposed.

Quantum transport through a double Aharonov-Bohm-interferometer in the presence of Andreev reflection

Quantum transport through a double Aharonov-Bohm-interferometer in the presence of Andreev reflection is investigated in terms of the nonequilibrium Green function method with which the reflection current is obtained. Tunable Andreev reflection probabilities depending on the interdot coupling strength and magnetic flux as well are analysised in detail. It is found that the oscillation period of the reflection probability with respect to the magnetic flux for the double interferometer depends linearly on the ratio of two parts magnetic fluxes n, i.e. 2(n+1)pi, while that of a single interferometer is 2pi. The coupling strength not only affects the height and the linewidth of Andreev reflection current peaks vs gate votage but also shifts the peak positions. It is furthermore demonstrated that the Andreev reflection current peaks can be tuned by the magnetic fluxes.

Spin Current and Shot Noise in Single-Molecule Quantum Dots with a Phonon Mode

In this paper we investigate the spin-current and its shot-noise spectrum in a single-molecule quantum dot coupled with a local phonon mode. We pay special attention on the effect of phonon on the quantum transport property. The spin-polarization dependent current is generated by a rotating magnetic filed applied in the quantum dot. Our results show the remarkable influence of phonon mode on the zero-frequency shot noise. The electron-phonon interaction leads to sideband peaks which are located exactly on the integer number of the phonon frequency and moreover the peak-height is sensitive to the electron-phonon coupling.

Dynamics of Dipolar Spinor Condensates

We study the semiclassical dynamics of a spinor condensate with the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction included. The time evolution of the population imbalance and the relative phase among different spin components depends greatly on the relative strength of interactions as well as on the initial conditions. The interplay of spin exchange and dipole-dipole interaction makes it possible to manipulate the atomic population on different components, leading to the phenomena of spontaneous magnetization and Macroscopic Quantum Self Trapping. Simple estimate demonstrates that these effects are accessible and controllable by modifying the geometry of the trapping potential.

Controllable Persistent Atom Current of Bose-Einstein Condensates in an Optical Lattice Ring

In this paper the macroscopic quantum states of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices is studied by solving the periodic Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one-dimensional geometry. It is shown that an exact solution seen to be a travelling wave of excited macroscopic quantum states resultes in a persistent atom current which can be controlled by adjusting of the barrier height of the optical periodic potential. A critical condition to generate the travelling wave is demonstrated and we moreover propose a practical experiment to realize the persistent atom current in a toroidal atom waveguide.

Superfluidity of spin-1 bosons in optical lattices

In this paper we show that the superfluidity of cold spin--1 Bose atoms of weak interactions in an optical lattice can be realized according to the excitation energy spectrum which is derived by means of Bogliubov transformation. The characteristic of the superfluid-phase spectrum is explained explicitly in terms of the nonvanishing critical velocity, i.e., the Landau criterion. It is observed that critical velocities of superfluid are different for three spin components and, moreover, can be controlled by adjusting the lattice parameters in practical experiments to detect the superfluid phase.

Phase diagram of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

The exact macroscopic wave functions of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice beyond the tight-binding approximation are studied by solving the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The phase diagram for superfluid and insulator phases of the condensates is determined analytically according to the macroscopic wave functions of the condensates, which are seen to be traveling matter waves.

Numerical Simulation on Tunnel Splitting of Bose-Einstein Condensate in Multi-Well Potentials

The low-energy-level macroscopic wave functions of the Bose-Einstein condensate(BEC) trapped in a symmetric double-well and a periodic potential are obtained by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. The ground state tunnel splitting is evaluated in terms of the even and odd wave functions corresponding to the global ground and excited states respectively. We show that the numerical result is in good agreement with the analytic level splitting obtained by means of the periodic instanton method.

Quantum phase transition of condensed bosons in optical lattices

In this paper we study the superfluid-Mott-insulator phase transition of ultracold dilute gas of bosonic atoms in an optical lattice by means of Green function method and Bogliubov transformation as well. The superfluid- Mott-insulator phase transition condition is determined by the energy-band structure with an obvious interpretation of the transition mechanism. Moreover the superfluid phase is explained explicitly from the energy spectrum derived in terms of Bogliubov approach.

Dynamics and Berry phase of two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

In terms of exact solutions of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for an effective giant spin modeled from a coupled two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with adiabatic and cyclic time-varying Raman coupling between two hyperfine states of the BEC, we obtain analytic time-evolution formulas of the population imbalance and relative phase between two components with various initial states, especially the SU(2)coherent state. We find the Berry phase depending on the number parity of atoms, and particle number dependence of the collapse revival of population-imbalance oscillation. It is shown that self-trapping and phase locking can be achieved from initial SU(2) coherent states with proper parameters.

Energy band structure and intrinsic coherent properties in two weakly linked Bose Einstein Condensates

The energy band structure and energy splitting due to quantum tunneling in two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates were calculated by using the instanton method. The intrinsic coherent properties of Bose Josephson junction were investigated in terms of energy splitting. For $E_{C}/E_{J}\ll 1$, the energy splitting is small and the system is globally phase coherent. In the opposite limit, $E_{C}/E_{J}\gg 1$, the energy splitting is large and the system becomes a phase dissipation. Our reslults suggest that one should investigate the coherence phenomna of BJJ in proper condition such as $E_{C}/E_{J}\sim 1$.

Suppression of Quantum Phase Interference in Molecular Magnets Fe₈ with Dipolar-Dipolar Interaction

Renormalized tunnel splitting with a finite distribution in the biaxial spin model for molecular magnets is obtained by taking into account the dipolar interaction of enviromental spins. Oscillation of the resonant tunnel splitting with a transverse magnetic field along the hard axis is smeared by the finite distribution which subsequently affects the quantum steps of hysteresis curve evaluated in terms of the modified Landau-Zener model of spin flipping induced by the sweeping field. We conclude that the dipolar-dipolar interaction drives decoherence of quantum tunnelling in molcular magnets Fe₈, which explains why the quenching points of tunnel spliting between odd and even resonant tunnelling predcited theoretically were not observed experimentally.

Instanton-Sphaleron transition in the d = 2 Abelian-Higgs model on a Circle

The transition from the instanton-dominated quantum regime to the sphaleron-dominated classical regime is studied in the $d=2$ abelian-Higgs model when the spatial coordinate is compactified to $S^1$. Contrary to the noncompactified case, this model allows both sharp first-order and smooth second-order transitions depending on the size of the circle. This finding may make the model a useful toy model for the analysis of baryon number violating processes. Since the model can to a large extent be treated analytically, it can also serve as a transparent prototype for the application of our method to more complicated cases, such as those in higher dimensions.
