Direct Observation of Magnon Fractionalization in the Quantum Spin Ladder

We measure by inelastic neutron scattering the spin excitation spectra as a function of applied magnetic field in the quantum spin-ladder material (C5H12N)2CuBr4. Discrete magnon modes at low fields in the quantum disordered phase and at high fields in the saturated phase contrast sharply with a spinon continuum at intermediate fields characteristic of the Luttinger-liquid phase. By tuning the magnetic field, we drive the fractionalization of magnons into spinons and, in this deconfined regime, observe both commensurate and incommensurate continua.

The two-spinon transverse structure factor of the gapped Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain

We consider the transverse dynamical structure factor of the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain (XXZ model) in the gapped antiferromagnetic regime ($Δ> 1$). Specializing to the case of zero field, we use two independent approaches based on integrability (one valid for finite size, the other for the infinite lattice) to obtain the exact two-spinon part of this correlator. We discuss in particular its asymmetry with respect to the $π/2$ momentum line, its overall anisotropy dependence, and its contribution to sum rules.

Dynamical structure factor at small q for the XXZ spin-1/2 chain

We combine Bethe Ansatz and field theory methods to study the longitudinal dynamical structure factor S^{zz}(q,omega) for the anisotropic spin-1/2 chain in the gapless regime. Using bosonization, we derive a low energy effective model, including the leading irrelevant operators (band curvature terms) which account for boson decay processes. The coupling constants of the effective model for finite anisotropy and finite magnetic field are determined exactly by comparison with corrections to thermodynamic quantities calculated by Bethe Ansatz. We show that a good approximation for the shape of the on-shell peak of S^{zz}(q,omega) in the interacting case is obtained by rescaling the result for free fermions by certain coefficients extracted from the effective Hamiltonian. In particular, the width of the on-shell peak is argued to scale like delta omega_{q} ~ q^2 and this prediction is shown to agree with the width of the two-particle continuum at finite fields calculated from the Bethe Ansatz equations. An exception to the q^2 scaling is found at finite field and large anisotropy parameter (near the isotropic point). We also present the calculation of the high-frequency tail of S^{zz}(q,ω) in the region delta omega_{q}<< omega-vq << J using finite-order perturbation theory in the band curvature terms. Both the width of the on-shell peak and the high-frequency tail are compared with S^{zz}(q,omega) calculated by Bethe Ansatz for finite chains using determinant expressions for the form factors and excellent agreement is obtained. Finally, the accuracy of the form factors is checked against the exact first moment sum rule and the static structure factor calculated by Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG).

Dynamics of the attractive 1D Bose gas: analytical treatment from integrability

The physics of the attractive one-dimensional Bose gas (Lieb-Liniger model) is investigated with techniques based on the integrability of the system. Combining a knowledge of particle quasi-momenta to exponential precision in the system size with determinant representations of matrix elements of local operators coming from the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain rather general analytical results for the zero-temperature dynamical correlation functions of the density and field operators. Our results thus provide quantitative predictions for possible future experiments in atomic gases or optical waveguides.

Deformed strings in the Heisenberg model

We investigate solutions to the Bethe equations for the isotropic S = 1/2 Heisenberg chain involving complex, string-like rapidity configurations of arbitrary length. Going beyond the traditional string hypothesis of undeformed strings, we describe a general procedure to construct eigenstates including strings with generic deformations, discuss general features of these solutions, and provide a number of explicit examples including complete solutions for all wavefunctions of short chains. We finally investigate some singular cases and show from simple symmetry arguments that their contribution to zero-temperature correlation functions vanishes.

Boson decay and the dynamical structure factor for the XXZ chain at finite magnetic field

We study the longitudinal dynamical structure factor $S^{zz}(q,ω)$ for the anisotropic spin-1/2 (XXZ) chain at finite magnetic field using bosonization. The leading irrelevant operators in the effective bosonic model stemming from band curvature describe boson decay processes and lead to a high-frequency tail and a finite width $γ_q$ of the on-shell peak for $S^{zz}(q,ω)$. We use the Bethe ansatz to show that $γ_q\sim q^2$ for $q\ll 1$ and to calculate the amplitudes of the leading irrelevant operators in the effective field theory.

Correlation functions of the one-dimensional attractive Bose gas

The zero-temperature correlation functions of the one-dimensional attractive Bose gas with delta-function interaction are calculated analytically for any value of the interaction parameter and number of particles, directly from the integrability of the model. We point out a number of interesting features, including zero recoil energy for large number of particles, analogous to a Mössbauer effect.

The 4-spinon dynamical structure factor of the Heisenberg chain

We compute the exact 4-spinon contribution to the zero-temperature dynamical structure factor of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg isotropic antiferromagnet in zero magnetic field, directly in the thermodynamic limit. We make use of the expressions for matrix elements of local spin operators obtained by Jimbo and Miwa using the quantum affine symmetry of the model, and of their adaptation to the isotropic case by Abada, Bougourzi and Si-Lakhal (correcting some overall factors). The 4-spinon contribution to the first frequency moment sum rule at fixed momentum is calculated. This shows, as expected, that most of the remaining correlation weight above the known 2-spinon part is carried by 4-spinon states. Our results therefore provide an extremely accurate description of the exact structure factor.

Dynamical density-density correlations in the one-dimensional Bose gas

The zero-temperature dynamical structure factor of the one-dimensional Bose gas with delta-function interaction (Lieb-Liniger model) is computed using a hybrid theoretical/numerical method based on the exact Bethe Ansatz solution, which allows to interpolate continuously between the weakly-coupled Thomas-Fermi and strongly-coupled Tonks-Girardeau regimes. The results should be experimentally accessible with Bragg spectroscopy.

The dynamical spin structure factor for the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

The longitudinal spin structure factor for the XXZ-chain at small wave-vector q is obtained using Bethe Ansatz, field theory methods and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group. It consists of a peak with peculiar, non-Lorentzian shape and a high-frequency tail. We show that the width of the peak is proportional to q^2 for finite magnetic field compared to q^3 for zero field. For the tail we derive an analytic formula without any adjustable parameters and demonstrate that the integrability of the model directly affects the lineshape.

Transport between edge states in multilayer integer quantum Hall systems: exact treatment of Coulomb interactions and disorder

A set of stacked two-dimensional electron systems in a perpendicular magnetic field exhibits a three-dimensional version of the quantum Hall effect if interlayer tunneling is not too strong. When such a sample is in a quantum Hall plateau, the edge states of each layer combine to form a chiral metal at the sample surface. We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in transport properties of the chiral metal, in the regime of weak interlayer tunneling. Our starting point is a system without interlayer tunneling, in which the only excitations are harmonic collective modes: surface magnetoplasmons. Using bosonization and working perturbatively in the interlayer tunneling amplitude, we express transport properties in terms of the spectrum for these collective modes, treating electron-electron interactions and impurity scattering exactly. We calculte the conductivity as a function of temperature, finding that it increases with increasing temperature as observed in recent experiments. We also calculate the autocorrelation function of mesoscopic conductance fluctuations induced by changes in a magnetic field component perpendicular to the sample surface, and its dependence on temperature. We show that conductance fluctuations are characterised by a dephasing length that varies inversely with temperature.

Computation of dynamical correlation functions of Heisenberg chains: the gapless anisotropic regime

We compute all dynamical spin-spin correlation functions for the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg model in the gapless antiferromagnetic regime, using numerical sums of exact determinant representations for form factors of spin operators on the lattice. Contributions from intermediate states containing many particles and string (bound) states are included. We present modified determinant representations for the form factors valid in the general case with string solutions to the Bethe equations. Our results are such that the available sum rules are saturated to high precision. We Fourier transform our results back to real space, allowing us in particular to make a comparison with known exact formulas for equal-time correlation functions for small separations in zero field, and with predictions for the zero-field asymptotics from conformal field theory.

Electron Interactions and Transport Between Coupled Quantum Hall Edges

We examine the effects of electron-electron interactions on transport between edge states in a multilayer integer quantum Hall system. The edge states of such a system, coupled by interlayer tunneling, form a two-dimensional, chiral metal at the sample surface. We calculate the temperature-dependent conductivity and the amplitude of conductance fluctuations in this chiral metal, treating Coulomb interactions and disorder exactly in the weak-tunneling limit. We find that the conductivity increases with increasing temperature, as observed in recent experiments, and we show that the correlation length characterising conductance fluctuations varies inversely with temperature.

Computation of dynamical correlation functions of Heisenberg chains in a field

We compute the momentum- and frequency-dependent longitudinal spin structure factor for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 $XXZ$ Heisenberg spin chain in a magnetic field, using exact determinant representations for form factors on the lattice. Multiparticle contributions are computed numerically throughout the Brillouin zone, yielding saturation of the sum rule to high precision.

Gapped Heisenberg spin chains in a field

We consider the fully anisotropic Heisenberg spin-1/2 antiferromagnet in a uniform magnetic field, whose ground-state is characterized by broken spin rotation symmetry and gapped spinon excitations. We expand on a recent mean-field approach to the problem by incorporating fluctuations in a loop expansion. Quantitative results for the magnetization, excitation gap and specific heat are obtained. We compare our predictions with new DMRG and exact diagonalization data and, for zero field, with the exact solution of the ${XYZ}$ spin chain from the Bethe Ansatz.

The two-boundary sine-Gordon model

We study in this paper the ground state energy of a free bosonic theory on a finite interval of length $R$ with either a pair of sine-Gordon type or a pair of Kondo type interactions at each boundary. This problem has potential applications in condensed matter (current through superconductor-Luttinger liquid-superconductor junctions) as well as in open string theory (tachyon condensation). While the application of Bethe ansatz techniques to this problem is in principle well known, considerable technical difficulties are encountered. These difficulties arise mainly from the way the bare couplings are encoded in the reflection matrices, and require complex analytic continuations, which we carry out in detail in a few cases.

Currents and correlations in Luttinger liquids and carbon nanotubes at finite temperature and size: a bosonization study

We consider problems of one dimensional interacting fermions confined to a finite size, multichannel geometry. Concentrating on Luttinger liquids and carbon nanotubes, we use nontrivial boundary conditions to represent the effect of external leads, and apply our framework to transport problems in a Josephson junction setup. We present an exact computation of all correlation functions, including finite-size and temperature effects, for two sets of solvable boundary conditions. In all cases, we compute physical quantities like the Josephson current and the pairing order parameter profile.

The Josephson current in Luttinger liquid-superconductor junctions

We study the Josephson current through a Luttinger liquid in contact with two superconductors. We show that it can be deduced from the Casimir energy in a two-boundary version of the sine-Gordon model. We develop a new thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz, which, combined with a subtle analytic continuation procedure, allows us to calculate this energy in closed form, and obtain the complete current-crossover function from the case of complete normal to complete Andreev reflection.
