Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study of Multiferroic Bi-substituted Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3)

The electronic structures of multiferroic oxides of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) (0 < x < 0.12) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The measured Fe and Ti 2p XAS spectra show that Ti ions are in the Ti4+ states for all x and that Fe ions are Fe2+-Fe3+ mixed-valent for x > 0. The valence states of Fe ions are found to be nearly trivalent for x=0, and decreases with increasing x from being nearly trivalent (v(Fe)~ 3) for x=0 to v(Fe)~ 2.6 for x=0.12. The valence states of both Ti and Ba ions do not change for all x < 0.12. Based on the obtained valence states of Fe ions, the electronic and magnetic properties of Ba(1-x)Bi(x)Ti(0.9)Fe(0.1)O(3) are explored.

No asymmetric outflows from Sagittarius A* during the pericenter passage of the gas cloud G2

The gas cloud G2 falling toward Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, is supposed to provide valuable information on the physics of accretion flows and the environment of the black hole. We observed Sgr A* with four European stations of the Global Millimeter Very Long Baseline Interferometry Array (GMVA) at 86 GHz on 1 October 2013 when parts of G2 had already passed the pericenter. We searched for possible transient asymmetric structure -- such as jets or winds from hot accretion flows -- around Sgr A* caused by accretion of material from G2. The interferometric closure phases remained zero within errors during the observation time. We thus conclude that Sgr A* did not show significant asymmetric (in the observer frame) outflows in late 2013. Using simulations, we constrain the size of the outflows that we could have missed to ~2.5 mas along the major axis, ~0.4 mas along the minor axis of the beam, corresponding to approximately 232 and 35 Schwarzschild radii, respectively; we thus probe spatial scales on which the jets of radio galaxies are suspected to convert magnetic into kinetic energy. As probably less than 0.2 Jy of the flux from Sgr A* can be attributed to accretion from G2, one finds an effective accretion rate eta*Mdot < 1.5*10^9 kg/s ~ 7.7*10^-9 Mearth/yr for material from G2. Exploiting the kinetic jet power--accretion power relation of radio galaxies, one finds that the rate of accretion of matter that ends up in jets is limited to Mdot < 10^17 kg/s ~ 0.5 Mearth/yr, less than about 20% of the mass of G2. Accordingly, G2 appears to be largely stable against loss of angular momentum and subsequent (partial) accretion at least on time scales < 1 year.

Existence of Orbital Order and its Fluctuation in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ Revealed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

We performed temperature dependent X-ray linear dichroism (XLD) experiments on an iron pnictide system, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x$=0.00 and 0.05, to experimentally verify existence of orbital ordering (OO). We observed clear XLD in polarization dependent X-ray absorption spectra of Fe $L$ edges. By exploiting the difference in the temperature dependent behaviors, we were able to separate OO and structure contributions to XLD. The observed OO signal indicates different occupation numbers for $d_{yz}$ and $d_{zx}$ orbitals and supports existence of a ferro-OO. The results are also consistent with the theoretical prediction. Moreover, we find substantial OO signal above the transition temperature, which suggests that OO fluctuation exists well above the transition temperature.

Electronic and magnetic structure of carbon nanotubes using x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy

Carbon nanotubes are a fraction of the size of transistors used in today's best microchips, as it could reduce power demands and heating in next electronics revolution. Present study investigates the electronic and magnetic structure of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) synthesized by chemical vapor deposition technique using near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) measurement at C K-edge and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co and Fe $L_{3,2}$ -edges. NEXAFS at C K-edge shows significant $π$-bonding, and Fe(Co) L-edge proves the presence of Co$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ in octahedral symmetry, and embedded in C-matrix of MWCNT. Element specific hystersis loops and XMCD spectra clearly shows that these MWCNTs exhibits room temperature ferromagnetism. These measurements elucidated the electronic structure of CNTs and presence of magnetic interactions at room temperature.

Hole mediated ferromagnetism in Cu-doped ZnO thin films

We report the successful synthesis of ZnO:Cu thin films doped with holes, resulting in room temperature ferromagnetism. Hole doping is achieved by As-diffusion from the GaAs substrate into ZnO films, assisted by thermal annealing. The As-diffusion is probed with the help of x-ray absorption spectra collected at the As K-edge which show enhanced signature of diffusion in the annealed samples. Introduction of holes, due to the As doping, in ZnO films is further evidenced by the Cu L3,2-edge spectra. XMCD and magnetic measurements show that the ferromagnetic interaction between doped Cu ions is enhanced after hole doping.

Interfacial nanostructure induced spin-reorientation transition in Ni/Fe/Ni/W(110)

We investigated the mechanism of the spin-reorientation transition (SRT) in the Ni/Fe/Ni/W(110) system using in situ low-energy electron microscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements, and first principles electronic structure calculations. We discovered that the growth of Fe on a flat Ni film on a W (110) crystal resulted in the formation of nanosized particles, instead of a uniform monolayer of Fe as commonly assumed. This interfacial nanostructure leads to a change of the system's dimensionality from two dimensional- to three dimensional-like, which simultaneously weakens the dipolar interaction and enhances the spin-orbit coupling in the system and drives the observed SRT.

Thickness-dependent magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO

We have studied how the magnetic properties of oxygen-deficient EuO sputtered thin films vary as a function of thickness. The magnetic moment, measured by polarized neutron reflectometry, and the Curie temperature are found to decrease with reducing thickness. Our results indicate that the reduced number of nearest neighbors, band bending and the partial depopulation of the electronic states that carry the spins associated with the 4f orbitals of Eu are all contributing factors in the surface-induced change of the magnetic properties of EuO$_{1-x}$.

Tunable magnetic interaction at the atomic scale in oxide heterostructures

We report on a systematic study of a number of structurally identical but chemically distinct transition metal oxides in order to determine how the material-specific properties such as the composition and the strain affect the properties at the interface of heterostructures. Our study considers a series of structures containing two layers of ferromagnetic SrRuO3, with antiferromagnetic insulating manganites sandwiched in between. The results demonstrate how to control the strength and relative orientation of interfacial ferromagnetism in correlated electron materials by means of valence state variation and substrate-induced strain, respectively.

Novel Jeff = 1/2 Mott State Induced by Relativistic Spin-Orbit Coupling in Sr2IrO4

We investigated electronic structure of 5d transition-metal oxide Sr2IrO4 using angle-resolved photoemission, optical conductivity, and x-ray absorption measurements and first-principles band calculations. The system was found to be well described by novel effective total angular momentum Jeff states, in which relativistic spin-orbit (SO) coupling is fully taken into account under a large crystal field. Despite of delocalized Ir 5d states, the Jeff-states form so narrow bands that even a small correlation energy leads to the Jeff = 1/2 Mott ground state with unique electronic and magnetic behaviors, suggesting a new class of the Jeff quantum spin driven correlated-electron phenomena.

Influence of oxygen vacancy on the electronic structure of HfO$_2$ film

We investigated the unoccupied part of the electronic structure of the oxygen-deficient hafnium oxide (HfO$_{\sim1.8}$) using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at O $K$ and Hf $N_3$ edges. Band-tail states beneath the unoccupied Hf 5$d$ band are observed in the O $K$-edge spectra; combined with ultraviolet photoemission spectrum, this indicates the non-negligible occupation of Hf 5$d$ state. However, Hf $N_3$-edge magnetic circular dichroism spectrum reveals the absence of a long-range ferromagnetic spin order in the oxide. Thus the small amount of $d$ electron gained by the vacancy formation does not show inter-site correlation, contrary to a recent report [M. Venkatesan {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 430}, 630 (2004)].

Non-resonant and Resonant X-ray Scattering Studies on Multiferroic TbMn2O5

Comprehensive x-ray scattering studies, including resonant scattering at Mn L-edge, Tb L- and M-edges, were performed on single crystals of TbMn2O5. X-ray intensities were observed at a forbidden Bragg position in the ferroelectric phases, in addition to the lattice and the magnetic modulation peaks. Temperature dependences of their intensities and the relation between the modulation wave vectors provide direct evidences of exchange striction induced ferroelectricity. Resonant x-ray scattering results demonstrate the presence of multiple magnetic orders by exhibiting their different temperature dependences. The commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition around 24 K is attributed to discommensuration through phase slipping of the magnetic orders in spin frustrated geometries. We proposed that the low temperature incommensurate phase consists of the commensurate magnetic domains separated by anti-phase domain walls which reduce spontaneous polarizations abruptly at the transition.

Electronic structures of layered perovskite Sr2MO4 (M=Ru, Rh, and Ir)

We investigated the electronic structures of the two-dimensional layered perovskite Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ (\textit{M}=4\textit{d} Ru, 4\textit{d} Rh, and 5\textit{d} Ir) using optical spectroscopy and polarization-dependent O 1\textit{s} x-ray absorption spectroscopy. While the ground states of the series of compounds are rather different, their optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ exhibit similar interband transitions, indicative of the common electronic structures of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} layered oxides. The energy splittings between the two $e_{g}$ orbitals, $i.e.$, $d_{3z^{2}-r^{2}}$ and $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$, are about 2 eV, which is much larger than those in the pseudocubic and 3\textit{d} layered perovskite oxides. The electronic properties of the Sr$_{2}$\textit{M}O$_{4}$ compounds are discussed in terms of the crystal structure and the extended character of the 4\textit{d} and 5\textit{d} orbitals.

Magnetism and Transport in YbMn2Sb2

A new ternary intermetallic compound, namely, YbMn2Sb2, has been synthesized and its magnetic and electrical transport properties have been studied in the temperature range of 2 to 300 K. This compound crystallizes in a trigonal, La2O2S type structure (space group P3bm1, No. 164) and is found to be ferromagnetically ordered at room temperature. The magnetism is attributed to the ordering of Mn sublattice. M5 xray absorption spectrum of YbMn2Sb2 obtained at room temperature suggests that the valency of Yb in this compound is close to 2. Electrical resistivity of this compound is metal like and a positive magnetoresistance of 13 percent is observed at 5 K in an applied field of 9T.
