Nuclear transparencies in relativistic A(e,e'p) models

Relativistic and unfactorized calculations for the nuclear transparency extracted from exclusive A(e,e'p) reactions for 0.3 \leq Q^2 \leq 10 (GeV/c)^2 are presented for the target nuclei C, Si, Fe and Pb. For Q^2 \geq 0.6 (GeV/c)^2, the transparency results are computed within the framework of the recently developed relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA). The target-mass and Q^2 dependence of the RMSGA predictions are compared with relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation (RDWIA) calculations. Despite the very different model assumptions underlying the treatment of the final-state interactions in the RMSGA and RDWIA frameworks, they predict comparable nuclear transparencies for kinematic regimes where both models are applicable.

Analysis of polarized $^{16}$O$(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ observables within the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation

Recoil nucleon transferred polarization observables in coincidence quasielastic electron scattering are studied within the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation. Results for response functions and polarization asymmetries are discussed for proton knockout from $p_{1/2}$, $p_{3/2}$ and $s_{1/2}$ shells in $^{16}$O. The impact of spinor distortion is examined by comparing the fully relativistic calculation with results obtained by projecting out the negative-energy components. In particular, a careful analysis of effects linked to the description of the bound and scattered relativistic nucleon wave functions is presented. The high sensitivity of some polarization observables to the dynamical enhancement of the lower components, already shown within the relativistic plane wave impulse approximation, is proven to be maintained in the relativistic distorted wave approach. Semi-relativistic approaches based on the effective momentum approximation are also studied. Finally, comparison with experimental data and a brief analysis of effects linked to medium modified form factors is presented.

Meson Exchange Currents in (\vec{e},e'\vec{p}) observables

Our main aim in this work is to study the effects of meson-exchange currents (MEC) over asymmetries and recoil polarization observables in A(e,e'p)B reactions. This DWIA+MEC model takes care of relativistic degrees of freedom by using semi-relativistic operators for the one-body current as well as for the two-body MEC. These SR currents are obtained by a direct Pauli reduction of the corresponding relativistic operators by an expansion in terms of missing momentum over the nucleon mass, while the current dependence on the transferred energy and momentum is treated exactly. Also some comparisons with experimental data are made.

Nuclear model effects in Charged Current neutrino--nucleus quasielastic scattering

The quasielastic scattering of muon neutrinos on oxygen 16 is studied for neutrino energies between 200 MeV and 1 GeV using a relativistic shell model. Final state interactions are included within the distorted wave impulse approximation, by means of a relativistic optical potential, with and without imaginary part, and of a relativistic mean field potential. For comparison with experimental data the inclusive charged--current quasielastic cross section for $ν_μ$--$^{12}C$ scattering in the kinematical conditions of the LSND experiment at Los Alamos is also presented and briefly discussed.

Meson Exchange Currents in (e,e'p) recoil polarization observables

A study of the effects of meson-exchange currents and isobar configurations in $A(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})B$ reactions is presented. We use a distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) model where final-state interactions are treated through a phenomenological optical potential. The model includes relativistic corrections in the kinematics and in the electromagnetic one- and two-body currents. The full set of polarized response functions is analyzed, as well as the transferred polarization asymmetry. Results are presented for proton knock-out from closed-shell nuclei, for moderate to high momentum transfer.

Photometric variability of a young, low-mass brown dwarf

We report differential I-band and J-band photometry of S Ori 45, a cool (M8.5), young (1-8 Myr) brown dwarf of the sigma Orionis cluster with a likely mass estimated at around 20 times the mass of Jupiter. We detect variability (amplitudes ranging from 34 to 81 mmag) and observe a modulation at a period of 2.5-3.6 h in both optical and near-infrared light curves. The most recent optical data set, however, presents a modulation at the very short period of 46.4+/-1.5 min, which remains a mystery. The origin of the 2.5-3.6 h modulation is analized in terms of various scenarios: inhomogeneous features (dust clouds or magnetically induced dark spots) co-rotating with the object's surface, and presence of an unseen very low-mass companion that is steadily transferring mass to the primary. Because of the very young age of the object and its persistent strong Halpha emission, the possible presence of an accreting disk is also discussed. If the period of a few hours is related to rotation, our results suggest that sigma Orionis low-mass brown dwarfs are rotating faster than more massive cluster brown dwarfs at a rate consistent with their theoretically inferred masses and radii, implying that all of these objects have undergone similar angular momentum evolution.

Semi-relativistic meson exchange currents in (e,e') and (e,e'p) reactions

Electron-induced one-nucleon knock-out observables are computed for moderate to high momentum transfer making use of semi-relativistic expressions for the one-body and two-body meson-exchange current matrix elements. Emphasis is placed on the semi-relativistic form of the $Δ$-isobar exchange current and several prescriptions for the dynamical-equivalent form of the $Δ$-propagator are analyzed. To this end, the inclusive transverse response function, evaluated within the context of the semi-relativistic approach and using different prescriptions for the $Δ$-propagator, is compared with the fully relativistic calculation performed within the scheme of the relativistic Fermi gas model. It is found that the best approximation corresponds to using the traditional static $Δ$-propagator. These semi-relativistic approaches, which contain important aspects of relativity, are implemented in a distorted wave analysis of quasielastic $(e,e'p)$ reactions. Final state interactions are incorporated through a phenomenological optical potential model and relativistic kinematics is assumed when calculating the energy of the ejected nucleon. The results indicate that meson exchange currents may modify substantially the $TL$ asymmetry for high missing momentum.

Delta-isobar relativistic meson exchange currents in quasielastic electron scattering

We study the role of the $Δ$-isobar current on the response functions for high energy inclusive quasielastic electron scattering from nuclei. We consider a general Lagrangian which is compatible with contact invariance and perform a fully relativistic calculation in first-order perturbation theory for one-particle emission. The dependence of the responses upon off-shell parametrizations is analyzed and found to be mild. A discussion of scaling behaviour and a comparison with various non-relativistic approaches are also presented.

Relativity in polarized electron scattering observables

Coincidence scattering of polarized electrons from nuclei with polarization transfer to outgoing nucleons is studied within the context of relativistic mean field theory. Effects introduced by the dynamical enhancement of the lower components of the bound and scattered nucleon wave functions are analyzed for the polarized response functions and transferred polarization asymmetries. Results obtained by projecting out the negative-energy components are compared with the fully-relativistic calculation. The crucial role played by the relativistic dynamics in some spin-dependent observables is clearly manifested even for low/medium values of the missing momentum. Kinematical relativistic effects are also analyzed. A discussion of the factorization approach and the mechanism for its breakdown is also briefly presented.

Momentum distribution of relativistic nuclei with Hartree-Fock mesonic correlations

The impact of Hartree-Fock correlations on the nuclear momentum distribution is studied in a fully relativistic one boson exchange model. Hartree-Fock equations are exactly solved to first order in the coupling constants. The renormalization of the Dirac spinors in the medium is shown to affect the momentum distribution, as opposed to what happens in the non-relativistic case. The unitarity of the model is shown to be preserved by the present renormalization procedure.

A Methane Isolated Planetary Mass Object in Orion

We report on the discovery of a free-floating methane dwarf toward the direction of the young star cluster sigma Orionis. Based on the object's far-red optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy, we conclude that it is a possible member of this association. We have named it as S Ori J053810.1-023626 (S Ori 70 is the abridged name). If it is a true member of sigma Orionis, the comparison of the photometric and spectroscopic properties of S Ori 70 with state-of-the-art evolutionary models yields a mass of 3 (+5/-1) Jupiter mass for ages between 1 Myr and 8 Myr. The presence of such a low-mass object in our small search area (55.4 sq. arcmin) would indicate a rising substellar initial mass function in the sigma Orionis cluster even for planetary masses.

RPWIA analysis of dynamical relativistic contributions in $^{16}O(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})$ reactions

Coincidence scattering of polarized electrons from nuclei with polarization transfer to outgoing nucleons is studied within the context of relativistic mean field theory. Effects introduced by the dynamical enhancement of the lower components of the bound nucleon wave function are analyzed for the polarized response functions and transferred polarization asymmetries assuming the relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation (RPWIA). Results obtained by projecting out the negative-energy components are compared with the fully-relativistic calculation for proton knockout from $p_{1/2}$ and $p_{3/2}$ shells in $^{16}O$ for a variety of kinematic situations. The crucial role played by the relativistic dynamics in some spin-dependent observables is clearly manifested even for low/medium values of the missing momentum. The degree to which knowledge about nucleon form factors can be extracted from analyses of this type of process is also discussed.

Kinematical relativistic effects in $(\vec{e},e'\vec{N})$ reactions

Kinematical relativistic effects are analyzed within the plane-wave impulse approximation for outgoing nucleon polarized responses in coincidence electron scattering. Following recent approaches for non-relativistic reductions of the electromagnetic current operator, here an exact treatment of the problem for the transferred energy and momentum is presented. Rather than employing existing non-relativistic expressions for the single-nucleon matrix elements, in this work the response functions are expanded directly. Results are compared for different kinematical situations with the fully-relativistic PWIA calculation as well as with previous non-relativistic expansions. Off- and `on-shell' prescriptions are also studied in detail, and a systematic analysis of the various kinematical variables involved in the process is presented.

Gauge and Lorentz invariant one-pion exchange currents in electron scattering from a relativistic Fermi gas

A consistent analysis of relativistic pionic correlations and meson-exchange currents for electroweak quasielastic electron scattering from nuclei is carried out. Fully-relativistic one-pion-exchange electromagnetic operators are developed for use in one-particle emission electronuclear reactions within the context of the relativistic Fermi gas model. Then the exchange and pionic correlation currents are set up fully respecting the gauge invariance of the theory. Emphasis is placed on the self-energy current which, being infinite, needs to be renormalized. This is achieved starting in the Hartree-Fock framework and then expanding the Hartree-Fock current to first order in the square of the pion coupling constant to obtain a truly, gauge invariant, one-pion-exchange current. The model is applied to the calculation of the parity-conserving (PC) and parity-violating (PV) inclusive responses of nuclei. Interestingly, in the pionic correlations terms exist which arise uniquely from relativity, although their impact on the responses is found to be modest.

Recent Developments in relativistic models for exclusive (e,e'p) reactions

A comparison of impulse approximation calculations for the (e,e'p) reaction, based on the Dirac equation and the Schrodinger one is presented. Trivial (kinematics) differences are indicated, as well as how to remove them from the standard nonrelativistic formalism. Signatures of the relativistic approach are found where the enhancement of the lower components (spinor distortion or negative energy contributions) modifies TL observables with respect to the nonrelativistic predictions, what seems to be confirmed by the experiment. Finally, the relativistic approach is used to analyze several experiments for the reaction 16O(e,e'p)15N taken at values of Q^2 from 0.2 to 0.8 (GeV/c)^2, not finding a significant Q^2 dependence of the scale factors over this range.

Kinematical versus dynamical relativistic effects in A(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})B

The relativistic mean field approach is applied to the description of coincidence $A(e,e'p)B$ reactions where both the incident electron beam and knockout proton are polarized. Effects introduced by the dynamical enhancement of the lower components of the bound nucleon wave function are analyzed within RPWIA for the polarized responses and transferred polarizations. Results obtained by projecting out the negative-energy components are also compared with various nonrelativistic reductions.

Consistent one-pion exchange currents in electron scattering from a relativistic Fermi gas

A set of fully relativistic one-pion-exchange electromagnetic operators is developed for use in one-particle emission reactions induced by electrons. To preserve the gauge invariance of the theory additional pionic correlation operators are required beyond the usual meson-exchange current operators. Of these, in the present work emphasis is placed on the self-energy current which is infinite and needs to be renormalized. The renormalized current is expanded to first order to obtain a genuine one-pion-exchange contribution to the inclusive responses.

Relativistic pionic effects in quasielastic electron scattering

The impact of relativistic pionic correlations and meson-exchange currents on the response functions for electromagnetic quasielastic electron scattering from nuclei is studied in detail. Results in first-order perturbation theory are obtained for one-particle emission electronuclear reactions within the context of the relativistic Fermi gas model. Improving upon previous analyses where non-relativistic reductions of the currents were performed, here a fully relativistic analysis in which both forces and currents are treated consistently is presented. Lorentz covariance is shown to play a crucial role in enforcing the gauge invariance of the theory. Effects stemming uniquely from relativity in the pionic correlations are identified and, in particular, a comprehensive study of the self-energy contributions and of the currents associated with the pion is presented. First- and second-kind scaling for high momentum transfer is investigated.
