Quantitative Morphology of the Intermediate-Redshift Galaxy Cluster Abell 2443 from Ground-Based Imaging -- Evidence for a galaxy concentration index correlation with cluster density

We present broad-band photometry and provide a quantitative analysis of the structure of galaxies in the inner region of the Abell Cluster 2443 (z~0.1). The galaxy parameters have been derived by fitting a two-component model (Sersic r^{1/n} bulge and exponential disk) to a magnitude-limited sample. Using a new method of analysis which takes into account the effects of seeing on the structural parameters and considers the ellipticity as an active parameter, we avoid systematic errors arising from assumptions of circular symmetry. 76% of the sample galaxies were classified with these models, the rest were morphologically peculiar. For the spiral galaxies, the relation between n and B/D is consistent with the trend observed in nearby field galaxy samples. The Sersic index n (which can be considered as a concentration index) of the elliptical galaxies is correlated with the local surface density of the cluster. Monte Carlo simulations were used to check the reliability of the method and determine the magnitude selection criteria.

Growth of Galactic Bulges by Mergers: I. Dense Satellites

Andredakis, Peletier & Balcells (1995) fit Sersic's law $μ(r) \sim r^{1/n}$ to the bulges of the Balcells & Peletier (1994) galaxy sample, and infer that $n$ drops with morphological type T from $n \approx$ 4--6 for S0 to $n=1$ (exponential) for Sc's. We use collisionless N body simulations to test the assumption that initially the surface brightness profiles of all bulges were exponential, and that the steepening of the profiles toward the early-types is due to satellite accretion. The results are positive. After the accretion of a satellite, bulge-disk fits show that the bulge grows and that the bulge profile index $n$ increases proportional to the satellite mass. For a satellite as massive as the bulge, $n$ rises from 1 to 4. We present kinematic diagnostics on the remnants and disk thickening. The latter suggests that the bulge growth must have occurred before the last formation of a thin disk in the galaxy. The thick disks created by the merger are reminiscent of thick disks seen in early-type edge-on galaxies. The efficiency of the process suggests that present day bulges of late-type spirals showing exponential profiles cannot have grown significantly by collisionless mergers.

Optical Surface Photometry of a Sample of Disk Galaxies. II Structural Components

This work presents the structural decomposition of a sample of 11 disk galaxies, which span a range of different morphological types. The U, B, V, R, and I photometric information given in Paper I (color and color-index images and luminosity, ellipticity, and position-angle profiles) has been used to decide what types of components form the galaxies before carrying out the decomposition. We find and model such components as bulges, disks, bars, lenses and rings.

The effects of seeing on Sersic profiles

The effects of seeing on the parameters of the Sèrsic profile are studied in an analytical form using a Gaussian point spread function. The surface brightness of Sèrsic profiles is proportional (in magnitudes) to $r^{1/n}$. The parameter $n$ serves to classify the type of profile and is related to the central luminosity concentration. It is the parameter most affected by seeing; furthermore, the value of $n$ that can be measured is always smaller than the real one. It is shown that the luminosity density of the Sèrsic profile with $n$ less than 0.5 has a central depression, which is physically unlikely. Also, the intrinsic ellipticity of the sources has been taken into account and we show that the parameters are dependent when the effects of seeing are non-negligible. Finally, a prescription for correcting raw effective radii, central intensities and $n$ parameters is given.
