Confinement of hydrodynamic modes on a free surface and their quantum analogs

A subtle procedure to confine hydrodynamic modes on the free surface of a fluid is presented here. The experiment consists of a square vessel with an immersed square central well vibrating vertically so that the surface waves generated by the meniscus at the vessel boundary interfere with the bound states of the well. This is a classical analogy of a quantum well where some fundamental phenomena, such as bonding of states and interference between free waves and bound states, can be visualized and controlled. The above mentioned interference leads to a novel hydrodynamic transition from quasiperiodic to periodic patterns. Tight binding numerical calculations are performed here to show that our results could be transferred to design quantum confinements exhibiting electronic quasiperiodic surface states and their rational approximants for the first time.

Anisotropic convection in rotating proto-neutron stars

We study the conditions for convective instability in rotating, non-magnetic proto--neutron stars. The criteria that determine stability of nascent neutron stars are analogous to the Solberg--Hoiland conditions but including the presence of lepton gradients. Our results show that, for standard angular velocity profiles, convectively unstable modes with wave-vectors parallel to the rotation axis are suppressed by a stable angular momentum profile, while unstable modes with wave-vectors perpendicular to the axis remain unaltered. Since the wave-vector is perpendicular to the velocity perturbation, the directional selection of the unstable modes may result in fluid motions along the direction of the rotation axis. This occurs in rigidly rotating stars as well as in the inner core of differentially rotating stars. Our results provide a natural source of asymmetry for proto--neutron stars with the only requirement that angular velocities be of the order of the convective characteristic frequency.

Riemann Solvers in General Relativistic Hydrodynamics

Our contribution concerns with the numerical solution of the 3D general relativistic hydrodynamical system of equations within the framework of the 3+1 formalism. We summarize the theoretical ingredients which are necessary in order to build up a numerical scheme based on the solution of local Riemann problems. Hence, the full spectral decomposition of the Jacobian matrices of the system, i.e., the eigenvalues and the right and left eigenvectors, is explicitly shown. An alternative approach consists in using any of the special relativistic Riemann solvers recently developed for describing the evolution of special relativistic flows. Our proposal relies on a local change of coordinates in terms of which the spacetime metric is locally Minkowskian and permits an accurate description of numerical general relativistic hydrodynamics.

Evolution of Protoneutron Stars

We study the thermal and chemical evolution during the Kelvin-Helmholtz phase of the birth of a neutron star, employing neutrino opacities that are consistently calculated with the underlying equation of state (EOS). Expressions for the diffusion coefficients appropriate for general relativistic neutrino transport in the equilibrium diffusion approximation are derived. The diffusion coefficients are evaluated using a field-theoretical finite temperature EOS that includes the possible presence of hyperons. The variation of the diffusion coefficients is studied as a function of EOS and compositional parameters. We present results from numerical simulations of protoneutron star cooling for internal stellar properties as well as emitted neutrino energies and luminosities. We discuss the influence of the initial stellar model, the total mass, the underlying EOS, and the addition of hyperons on the evolution of the protoneutron star and upon the expected signal in terrestrial detectors.

Legendre expansion of the neutrino-antineutrino annihilation kernel: Influence of high order terms

We calculate the Legendre expansion of the rate of the process $ν+ \barν \leftrightarrow e^+ + e^-$ up to 3rd order extending previous results of other authors which only consider the 0th and 1st order terms. Using different closure relations for the moment equations of the radiative transfer equation we discuss the physical implications of taking into account quadratic and cubic terms on the energy deposition outside the neutrinosphere in a simplified model. The main conclusion is that 2nd order is necessary in the semi-transparent region and gives good results if an appropriate closure relation is used.
