Monte Carlo Study of the Spin-1 Baxter-Wu Model

The two-dimensional spin-1 Baxter-Wu model is studied by using Monte Carlo simulations. The standard single-spin-flip Metropolis algorithm is used to generate the configurations from which the order parameter, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility are measured. The finite-size scaling procedure is employed in order to get the critical behavior. The extensive simulations shown that the critical exponents are different from those of the spin-1/2 model suggesting that the spin-1 model is in a different universality class.

Phase Diagram and Critical Behavior of the Spin-1 Baxter-Wu Model with a Crystal Field

The phase diagram and critical behavior of the spin-1 Baxter-Wu model with a crystal field in two dimensions is explored by renormalization group, conventional finite-size scaling and conformal invariance techniques. We found that the phase diagram of this model is qualitatively the same as that of the dilute 4-states Potts model, presenting a multi-critical point for a finite value of the crystal field, in disagreement with previous work based on finite-size calculations. However, our results indicate that the critical exponents vary continuously along the second-order transition line, differently from the expected behavior of the dilute 4-states Potts model.

Percolation on two- and three-dimensional lattices

In this work we apply a highly efficient Monte Carlo algorithm recently proposed by Newman and Ziff to treat percolation problems. The site and bond percolation are studied on a number of lattices in two and three dimensions. Quite good results for the wrapping probabilities, correlation length critical exponent and critical concentration are obtained for the square, simple cubic, HCP and hexagonal lattices by using relatively small systems. We also confirm the universal aspect of the wrapping probabilities regarding site and bond dilution.

Cluster Hybrid Monte Carlo Simulation Algorithms

We show that addition of Metropolis single spin-flips to the Wolff cluster flipping Monte Carlo procedure leads to a dramatic {\bf increase} in performance for the spin-1/2 Ising model. We also show that adding Wolff cluster flipping to the Metropolis or heat bath algorithms in systems where just cluster flipping is not immediately obvious (such as the spin-3/2 Ising model) can substantially {\bf reduce} the statistical errors of the simulations. A further advantage of these methods is that systematic errors introduced by the use of imperfect random number generation may be largely healed by hybridizing single spin-flips with cluster flipping.

Phenomenological Renormalization Group Methods

Some renormalization group approaches have been proposed during the last few years which are close in spirit to the Nightingale phenomenological procedure. In essence, by exploiting the finite size scaling hypothesis, the approximate critical behavior of the model on infinite lattice is obtained through the exact computation of some thermal quantities of the model on finite clusters. In this work some of these methods are reviewed, namely the mean field renormalization group, the effective field renormalization group and the finite size scaling renormalization group procedures. Although special emphasis is given to the mean field renormalization group (since it has been, up to now, much more applied an extended to study a wide variety of different systems) a discussion of their potentialities and interrelations to other methods is also addressed.

The Critical Behaviour of the Spin-3/2 Blume-Capel Model in Two Dimensions

The phase diagram of the spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model in two dimensions is explored by conventional finite-size scaling, conformal invariance and Monte Carlo simulations. The model in its $τ$-continuum Hamiltonian version is also considered and compared with others spin-3/2 quantum chains. Our results indicate that differently from the standard spin-1 Blume-Capel model there is no multicritical point along the order-disorder transition line. This is in qualitative agreement with mean field prediction but in disagreement with previous approximate renormalization group calculations. We also presented new results for the spin-1 Blume-Capel model.
