Detection and characterisation of binary asteroid candidates through stellar occultations

Binary asteroids provide key access to fundamental parameters of Solar System remnants and planetary formations. However, the current knowledge of binary asteroids remains strongly biased by observational limitations, and main belt binary systems are still poorly characterised since current techniques preferentially detect either widely separated binaries close and bright systems. In this context, the high-precision astrometry of the Gaia mission has revealed a new population of candidate binaries exhibiting dynamical signatures consistent with unresolved companions. This work is part of the GaiaMoons program, and our aim with it was to characterise a sample of 357 potential binary asteroid targets and confirm or refute their binary nature. The properties of these candidates were derived from the high-precision photometric and astrometric observations provided by Gaia. We adopted stellar occultation as the observational method to study these targets. Between October 2023 and February 2026, we successfully carried out 165 observations for 101 targets. We subsequently analysed these events in the context of the available literature and previously reported observations. Thirty three observation led at least two positives for 24 objects that have undergone unprecedented occultation observation campaigns, with four objects showing indications of binary or contact binary features, namely 1127 Mimi, 35420 1998 AG6, 206 Hersilia, and 36882 2000 SW155. For the vast majority of these objects, the resulting dataset from all reduced observations provides unique physical and astrometric constraints, as they had never been observed through stellar occultations before. GaiaMoons illustrates how stellar occultation campaigns associated with Gaia observations generate a self-improving cycle to find new binary, thereby probing size and shape to constrain future observations.

Stellar occultation observations of (38628) Huya and its satellite: a detailed look into the system

The physical and orbital parameters of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) provide valuable information about the Solar System's formation and evolution. In particular, the characterization of binaries provides insights into the formation mechanisms that may be playing a role at such large distances from the Sun. Studies show two distinct populations, and (38628) Huya occupies an intermediate position between the unequal-size binaries and those with components of roughly equal sizes. In this work, we predicted and observed three stellar occultation events by Huya. Huya and its satellite - S/2012 (38628) 1 - were detected during occultations in March 2021 and again in June 2023. Additionally, an attempt to detect Huya in February 2023 resulted in an additional single-chord detection of the secondary. A spherical body with a minimum diameter of D = 165 km can explain the three single-chord observations and provide a lower limit for the satellite size. The astrometry of Huya's system, as derived from the occultations and supplemented by observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck Observatory, provided constraints on the satellite orbit and the mass of the system. Therefore, assuming the secondary is in an equatorial orbit around the primary, the limb fitting was constrained by the satellite orbit position angle. The system density, calculated by summing the most precise measurement of Huya's volume to the spherical satellite average volume, is $ρ_{1}$ = 1073 $\pm$ 66 kg m$^{-3}$. The density that the object would have assuming a Maclaurin equilibrium shape with a rotational period of 6.725 $\pm$ 0.01 hours is $ρ_{2}$ = 768 $\pm$ 42 kg m$^{-3}$. This difference rules out the Maclaurin equilibrium assumption for the main body shape.

The 2017 May 20$^{\rm th}$ stellar occultation by the elongated centaur (95626) 2002 GZ$_{32}$

We predicted a stellar occultation of the bright star Gaia DR1 4332852996360346368 (UCAC4 385-75921) (m$_{\rm V}$= 14.0 mag) by the centaur 2002 GZ$_{32}$ for 2017 May 20$^{\rm th}$. Our latest shadow path prediction was favourable to a large region in Europe. Observations were arranged in a broad region inside the nominal shadow path. Series of images were obtained with 29 telescopes throughout Europe and from six of them (five in Spain and one in Greece) we detected the occultation. This is the fourth centaur, besides Chariklo, Chiron and Bienor, for which a multi-chord stellar occultation is reported. By means of an elliptical fit to the occultation chords we obtained the limb of 2002 GZ$_{32}$ during the occultation, resulting in an ellipse with axes of 305 $\pm$ 17 km $\times$ 146 $\pm$ 8 km. From this limb, thanks to a rotational light curve obtained shortly after the occultation, we derived the geometric albedo of 2002 GZ$_{32}$ ($p_{\rm V}$ = 0.043 $\pm$ 0.007) and a 3-D ellipsoidal shape with axes 366 km $\times$ 306 km $\times$ 120 km. This shape is not fully consistent with a homogeneous body in hydrostatic equilibrium for the known rotation period of 2002 GZ$_{32}$. The size (albedo) obtained from the occultation is respectively smaller (greater) than that derived from the radiometric technique but compatible within error bars. No rings or debris around 2002 GZ$_{32}$ were detected from the occultation, but narrow and thin rings cannot be discarded.

Theory of electrically controlled exhibition of circular Bragg phenomenon by an obliquely excited structurally chiral material. Part 2: arbitrary dc electric field

Numerical examination of the solution of the boundary--value problem of the reflection and transmission of a plane wave due to a slab of an electro--optic structurally chiral material (SCM) indicates that the exhibition of the circular Bragg phenomenon by the SCM can be controlled not only by the sign and the magnitude of a dc electric field but also by its orientation in relation to axis of helicoidal nonhomogeneity of the SCM. Thereby, the possibility of electrical control of circular--polarization filters has been extended.

Theory of electrically controlled exhibition of circular Bragg phenomenon by an obliquely excited structurally chiral material

The boundary-value problem of the reflection and transmission of a plane wave due to a slab of an electro-optic structurally chiral material (SCM) is formulated in terms of a 4x4 matrix ordinary differential equation. The SCM slab can be locally endowed with one of 20 classes of point group symmetry, and is subjected to a dc voltage across its thickness. The enhancement (and, in some cases, the production) of the circular Bragg phenomenon (CBP) by the application of the dc voltage has either switching or circular-polarization-rejection applications in optics. The twin possibilities of thinner filters and electrical manipulation of the CBP, depending on the local crystallographic class as well as the constitutive parameters of the SCM, emerge.

Standard and Embedded Solitons in Nematic Optical Fibers

A model for a non-Kerr cylindrical nematic fiber is presented. We use the multiple scales method to show the possibility of constructing different kinds of wavepackets of transverse magnetic (TM) modes propagating through the fiber. This procedure allows us to generate different hierarchies of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) which describe the propagation of optical pulses along the fiber. We go beyond the usual weakly nonlinear limit of a Kerr medium and derive an extended Nonlinear Schrodinger equation (eNLS) with a third order derivative nonlinearity, governing the dynamics for the amplitude of the wavepacket. In this derivation the dispersion, self-focussing and diffraction in the nematic are taken into account. Although the resulting nonlinear $PDE$ may be reduced to the modified Korteweg de Vries equation (mKdV), it also has additional complex solutions which include two-parameter families of bright and dark complex solitons. We show analytically that under certain conditions, the bright solitons are actually double embedded solitons. We explain why these solitons do not radiate at all, even though their wavenumbers are contained in the linear spectrum of the system. Finally, we close the paper by making comments on the advantages as well as the limitations of our approach, and on further generalizations of the model and method presented.
