Spin-deformation coupling in two-dimensional polar materials

The control of the spin degree of freedom is at the heart of spintronics, which can potentially be achieved by spin-orbit coupling or band topological effects. In this paper, we explore another potential controlled mechanism under debate: the spin-deformation coupling (SDC) - the coupling between intrinsic or extrinsic geometrical deformations and the spin degree of freedom. We focus on polar-deformed thin films or two-dimensional compounds, where the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is considered as an $SU(2)$ non-Abelian gauge field. We demonstrate that the dynamics between surface and normal electronic degrees of freedom can be properly decoupled using the thin-layer approach by performing a suitable gauge transformation, as introduced in the context of many-body correlated systems. Our work leads to three significant results: (i) gauge invariance implies that the spin is uncoupled from the surface's extrinsic geometry, challenging the common consensus; (ii) the Rashba SOC on a curved surface can be included as an $SU(2)$ non-Abelian gauge field in curvilinear coordinates; and (iii) we identify a previously unnoticed scalar geometrical potential dependent on the Rashba SOC strength. This scalar potential, independent of spin, represents the residual effect remaining after decoupling the normal component of the non-Abelian gauge field. The outcomes of our work open novel pathways for exploring the manipulation of spin degrees of freedom through the use of the SDC.

Dynamical symmetry breaking, magnetization and induced charge in graphene: Interplay between magnetic and pseudomagnetic fields

In this paper, we investigate the two competing effects of strains and magnetic fields in single-layer graphene to explore its impact on various phenomena of quantum field theory, such as induced charge density, magnetic catalysis, symmetry breaking, dynamical mass generation and magnetization. We show that the interplay between strains and magnetic fields produces not only a breaking of chiral symmetry, as it happens in QED$_{2+1}$, but also parity and time-reversal symmetry breaking. The last two symmetry breakings are related to the dynamical generation of a Haldane mass term. We find that it is possible to modify the magnetization and the dynamical mass independently for each valley, by strain and varying the external magnetic field. Furthermore, we discover that the presence of a non-zero pseudomagnetic field, unlike the magnetic one, allows us to observe an induced "vacuum" charge and a parity anomaly in strained graphene. Finally, because the combined effect of real and pseudomagnetic fields produces an induced valley polarization, the results presented here may provide new tools to design valleytronic devices.

Dynamics of Majorana fermions in two-dimensions

A Majorana fermion is the single fermionic particle that is its own antiparticle. Its dynamics is determined by the Majorana equation where the spinor field $(ψ)$ is by definition equal to its charge-conjugate field $(ψ_c)$. Here, we study the dynamics of Majorana fermions in the presence of the most general static external field in $1+1$ dimensions, which is just a scalar potential, by implementing for the first time the methods of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. In particular, for potentials for which shape invariance holds, we show how to obtain analytical solutions. We find that although this equation does have bound states, it does not have stationary states. The approach is illustrated with a linear potential.

Induced magnetic moment for a spinless charged particle in the thin-layer approach

We determine the effective dynamics for a spinless charged particle, in the presence of electromagnetic fields, constrained to a space curve. We employ the thin-layer procedure and a perturbative expansion for the Schrödinger equation is derived. We find that the first-order term in the perturbative expansion couples the dynamics of the normal and tangent degrees of freedom. However, there is always a gauge transformation that allows decouple the dynamics. We find that the effective Schrödinger equation in the curve contains an induced Zeeman coupling, independent of the curvature and torsion, which has not been previously reported. This coupling is characteristic of reducing the dimension by two and allows to identify an induced magnetic moment.

Energy operator for non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics revisited

Hamiltonian operators are gauge dependent. For overcome this difficulty we reexamined the effect of a gauge transformation on Schrödinger and Dirac equations. We show that the gauge invariance of the operator $H-i\hbar\frac{\partial}{\partial t}$ provides a way to find the energy operator from first principles. In particular, when the system has stationary states the energy operator can be identified without ambiguities for non-relativistic and relativistic quantum mechanics. Finally, we examine other approaches finding that in the case in which the electromagnetic field is time independent, the energy operator obtained here is the same as one recently proposed by Chen et al. [1].
