Testing the Distance-Duality Relation with Galaxy Clusters and Type Ia Supernovae

In this letter we propose a new and model-independent cosmological test for the distance-duality (DD) relation, η=D_{L}(z)(1+z)^{-2}/D_{A}(z)=1, where D_{L} and D_{A} are, respectively, the luminosity and angular diameter distances. For $D_L$ we consider two sub-samples of SNe type Ia taken from Constitution data (2009) whereas $D_A$ distances are provided by two samples of galaxy clusters compiled by De Fillipis et al. (2005) and Bonamente et al. (2006) by combining Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect (SZE) and X-ray surface brightness. The SNe Ia redshifts of each sub-sample were carefully chosen to coincide with the ones of the associated galaxy cluster sample (Δz<0.005) thereby allowing a direct test of DD relation. Since for very low redshifts, D_{A}(z) \approxeq D_{L}(z), we have tested the DD relation by assuming that $η$ is a function of the redshift parametrized by two different expressions: η(z) = 1 + η_{0}z and η(z) = 1 + η_{0}z/(1+z), where η_0 is a constant parameter quantifying a possible departure from the strict validity of the reciprocity relation (η_0=0). In the best scenario (linear parametrization) we obtain η_{0} = -0.28^{+ 0.44}_{- 0.44} (2σ$, statistical + systematic errors) for de Fillipis et al. sample (eliptical geometry), a result only marginally compatible with the DD relation. However, for Bonamente et al. sample (spherical geometry) the constraint is η_{0} = -0.42^{+ 0.34}_{- 0.34} (3σ$, statistical + systematic errors) which is clearly incompatible with the duality-distance relation.

Analytical solutions of accreting black holes immersed in a Lambda-CDM model

The evolution of the mass of a black hole embedded in a universe filled with dark energy and cold dark matter is calculated in a closed form within a test fluid model in a Schwarzschild metric, taking into account the cosmological evolution of both fluids. The result describes exactly how accretion asymptotically switches from the matter-dominated to the Lambda-dominated regime. For early epochs, the black hole mass increases due to dark matter accretion, and on later epochs the increase in mass stops as dark energy accretion takes over. Thus, the unphysical behaviour of previous analyses is improved in this simple exact model.

Constraints on Cold Dark Matter Accelerating Cosmologies and Cluster Formation

We discuss the properties of homogeneous and isotropic flat cosmologies in which the present accelerating stage is powered only by the gravitationally induced creation of cold dark matter (CCDM) particles ($Ω_{m}=1$). For some matter creation rates proposed in the literature, we show that the main cosmological functions such as the scale factor of the universe, the Hubble expansion rate, the growth factor and the cluster formation rate are analytically defined. The best CCDM scenario has only one free parameter and our joint analysis involving BAO + CMB + SNe Ia data yields ${\tildeΩ}_{m}= 0.28\pm 0.01$ ($1σ$) where $\tilde{Ω}_{m}$ is the observed matter density parameter. In particular, this implies that the model has no dark energy but the part of the matter that is effectively clustering is in good agreement with the latest determinations from large scale structure. The growth of perturbation and the formation of galaxy clusters in such scenarios are also investigated. Despite the fact that both scenarios may share the same Hubble expansion, we find that matter creation cosmologies predict stronger small scale dynamics which implies a faster growth rate of perturbations with respect to the usual $Λ$CDM cosmology. Such results point to the possibility of a crucial observational test confronting CCDM with $Λ$CDM scenarios trough a more detailed analysis involving CMB, weak lensing, as well as the large scale structure.

Constraining H0 in General Dark Energy Models from Sunyaev-Zeldovich/X-ray Technique and Complementary Probes

In accelerating dark energy models, the estimates of H0 from Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) and X-ray surface brightness of galaxy clusters may depend on the matter content (Omega_M), the curvature (Omega_K) and the equation of state parameter (w). In this article, by using a sample of 25 angular diameter distances from galaxy clusters obtained through SZE/X-ray technique, we constrain H_0 in the framework of a general LCDM models (free curvature) and a flat XCDM model with equation of state parameter, w=p_x/ρ_x (w=constant). In order to broke the degeneracy on the cosmological parameters, we apply a joint analysis involving the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the CMB Shift Parameter signature. By neglecting systematic uncertainties, for nonflat LCDM cosmologies we obtain $H_0=73.2^{+4.3}_{-3.7}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ (1sigma) whereas for a flat universe with constant equation of state parameter we find $H_0=71.4^{+4.4}_{-3.4}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ (1$σ$). Such results are also in good agreement with independent studies from the Hubble Space Telescope key project and recent estimates based on Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, thereby suggesting that the combination of these three independent phenomena provides an interesting method to constrain the Hubble constant. In particular, comparing these results with a recent determination for a flat LCDM model using only the SZE technique and BAO [Cunha et al. MNRAS 379, L1 2007], we see that the geometry has a very weak influence on H0 estimates for this combination of data.

CDM Accelerating Cosmology as an Alternative to LCDM model

A new accelerating cosmology driven only by baryons plus cold dark matter (CDM) is proposed in the framework of general relativity. In this model the present accelerating stage of the Universe is powered by the negative pressure describing the gravitationally-induced particle production of cold dark matter particles. This kind of scenario has only one free parameter and the differential equation governing the evolution of the scale factor is exactly the same of the $Λ$CDM model. For a spatially flat Universe, as predicted by inflation ($Ω_{dm}+Ω_{baryon}=1$), it is found that the effectively observed matter density parameter is $Ω_{meff} = 1- α$, where $α$ is the constant parameter specifying the CDM particle creation rate. The supernovae test based on the Union data (2008) requires $α\sim 0.71$ so that $Ω_{meff} \sim 0.29$ as independently derived from weak gravitational lensing, the large scale structure and other complementary observations.

Quantized fields and gravitational particle creation in f(R) expanding universes

The problem of cosmological particle creation for a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic Universes is discussed in the context of f(R) theories of gravity. Different from cosmological models based on general relativity theory, it is found that a conformal invariant metric does not forbid the creation of massless particles during the early stages (radiation era) of the Universe.

Bayesian Analysis and Constraints on Kinematic Models from Union SNIa

The kinematic expansion history of the universe is investigated by using the 307 supernovae type Ia from the Union Compilation set. Three simple model parameterizations for the deceleration parameter (constant, linear and abrupt transition) and two different models that are explicitly parametrized by the cosmic jerk parameter (constant and variable) are considered. Likelihood and Bayesian analyses are employed to find best fit parameters and compare models among themselves and with the flat $Λ$CDM model. Analytical expressions and estimates for the deceleration and cosmic jerk parameters today ($q_0$ and $j_0$) and for the transition redshift ($z_t$) between a past phase of cosmic deceleration to a current phase of acceleration are given. All models characterize an accelerated expansion for the universe today and largely indicate that it was decelerating in the past, having a transition redshift around 0.5. The cosmic jerk is not strongly constrained by the present supernovae data. For the most realistic kinematic models the $1σ$ confidence limits imply the following ranges of values: $q_0\in[-0.96,-0.46]$, $j_0\in[-3.2,-0.3]$ and $z_t\in[0.36,0.84]$, which are compatible with the $Λ$CDM predictions, $q_0=-0.57\pm0.04$, $j_0=-1$ and $z_t=0.71\pm0.08$. We find that even very simple kinematic models are equally good to describe the data compared to the concordance $Λ$CDM model, and that the current observations are not powerful enough to discriminate among all of them.

Are Galaxy Clusters Suggesting an Accelerating Universe Independent of SNe Ia and Gravity Metric Theory?

A kinematic method to access cosmic acceleration based exclusively on the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) and X-ray surface brightness data from galaxy clusters is proposed. By using the SZE/X-ray data from 38 galaxy clusters [Bonament et al., Astrop. J. 647, 25 (2006)], we find that the present Universe is accelerating and that the transition from an earlier decelerating to a late time accelerating regime occurred relatively recent. Such results are fully independent on the validity of any metric gravity theory, the possible matter-energy contents filling the Universe, as well as on the SNe type Ia Hubble diagram from which the present acceleration was inferred. The ability of the ongoing Planck satellite mission to obtain tighter constraints on the expansion history through SZE/X-ray angular diameters is also discussed. Two simple simulations of future Planck data suggest that such technique will be competitive with supernova data besides being complementary to it.

Inhomogeneus Inflation and Cosmic no-Hair Conjecture

The cosmic no hair conjecture is tested for a large class of inhomogeneous cosmologies with a positive cosmological constant. Firstly, we derive a new class of exact inhomogeneous cosmological solutions whose matter content of the models is formed by a mixture of two interacting simple fluids plus a cosmological Lambda-term. These models generalize the de Sitter spacetime and the inhomogeneous two-fluid Szekeres-type cosmologies derived by Lima and Tiomno. Finally, we show that the late time behaviour of our solutions is in agreement with the "cosmic no hair theorem" of Hawking and Moss.

Lowered Nonextensive Stellar Distribution

The structure of globular clusters and elliptical galaxies are described in an unified way through a new class of lowered models inspired on the nonextensive kinetic theory. These power law models are specified by a single parameter q which quantifies to what extent they depart from the class of lowered stellar distributions discussed by Michie and King. For q equal to unity, the Michie-King profiles are recovered. However, for q smaller than unity there is a gradual modification in the shape of the density profiles which depends on the degree of tidal damage imposed on the model, thereby also providing a good fit for globular clusters. It is also shown that a subclass of these models, those with a deeper potential and $q$ slightly less than unity, present a distribution resembling the de Vaucoulers $r^{1/4}$ profile which yields a good description of the structure of elliptical galaxies. This subset of models follows this trend, with a slight departure over nearly 10 orders of magnitudes.

Attenuation and damping of electromagnetic fields: Influence of inertia and displacement current

New results for attenuation and damping of electromagnetic fields in rigid conducting media are derived under the conjugate influence of inertia due to charge carriers and displacement current. Inertial effects are described by a relaxation time for the current density in the realm of an extended Ohm's law. The classical notions of poor and good conductors are rediscussed on the basis of an effective electric conductivity, depending on both wave frequency and relaxation time. It is found that the attenuation for good conductors at high frequencies depends solely on the relaxation time. This means that the penetration depth saturates to a minimum value at sufficiently high frequencies. It is also shown that the actions of inertia and displacement current on damping of magnetic fields are opposite to each other. That could explain why the classical decay time of magnetic fields scales approximately as the diffusion time. At very small length scales, the decay time could be given either by the relaxation time or by a fraction of the diffusion time, depending whether inertia or displacement current, respectively, would prevail on magnetic diffusion.

Simplified Quartessence Cosmology

We propose a new class of accelerating world models unifying the cosmological dark sector (dark matter and dark energy). All the models are described by a simplified version of the Chaplygin gas Quartessence cosmology. It is found that even for $Ω_k \neq 0$, this Quartessence scenario depends only on a pair of parameters which can severely be constrained by the cosmological tests. As an example we perform a joint analysis involving the latest SNe type Ia data and the recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey measurement of baryon acoustic oscillations. In our analysis we have considered the SNe type Ia Union sample compiled by Kowalski et al. (2008). At 95.4% (c.l.), we find for BAO + Union sample, $α=0.81^{+0.04}_{-0.04}$ and $Ω_{\rm Q4}=1.15^{+0.16}_{-0.17}$. The best fit for this simplified Quartessence scenario is a spatially closed Universe and its reduced $χ^2$ is exactly the same of the flat concordance model (LambdaCDM)

An Accelerating Cosmology Without Dark Energy

The negative pressure accompanying gravitationally-induced particle creation can lead to a cold dark matter (CDM) dominated, accelerating Universe (Lima et al. 1996) without requiring the presence of dark energy or a cosmological constant. In a recent study Lima et al. (2008, LSS) demonstrated that particle creation driven cosmological models are capable of accounting for the SNIa observations of the recent transition from a decelerating to an accelerating Universe. Here we test the evolution of such models at high redshift using the constraint on z_eq, the redshift of the epoch of matter radiation equality, provided by the WMAP constraints on the early Integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. Since the contribution of baryons and radiation was ignored in the work of LSS, we include them in our study of this class of models. The parameters of these more realistic models with continuous creation of CDM is tested and constrained at widely-separated epochs (z = z_eq and z = 0) in the evolution of the Universe. This comparison reveals a tension between the high redshift CMB constraint on z_eq and that which follows from the low redshift SNIa data, challenging the viability of this class of models.

New coupled quintessence cosmology

A component of dark energy has been recently proposed to explain the current acceleration of the Universe. Unless some unknown symmetry in Nature prevents or suppresses it, such a field may interact with the pressureless component of dark matter, giving rise to the so-called models of coupled quintessence. In this paper we propose a new cosmological scenario where radiation and baryons are conserved, while the dark energy component is decaying into cold dark matter (CDM). The dilution of CDM particles, attenuated with respect to the usual $a^{-3}$ scaling due to the interacting process, is characterized by a positive parameter $ε$, whereas the dark energy satisfies the equation of state $p_x=ωρ_x$ ($ω< 0$). We carry out a joint statistical analysis involving recent observations from type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation peak, and Cosmic Microwave Background shift parameter to check the observational viability of the coupled quintessence scenario here proposed.

On Phantom Thermodynamics

The thermodynamic properties of dark energy fluids described by an equation of state parameter $ω=p/ρ$ are rediscussed in the context of FRW type geometries. Contrarily to previous claims, it is argued here that the phantom regime $ω<-1$ is not physically possible since that both the temperature and the entropy of every physical fluids must be always positive definite. This means that one cannot appeal to negative temperature in order to save the phantom dark energy hypothesis as has been recently done in the literature. Such a result remains true as long as the chemical potential is zero. However, if the phantom fluid is endowed with a non-null chemical potential, the phantom field hypothesis becomes thermodynamically consistent, that is, there are macroscopic equilibrium states with $T>0$ and $S>0$ in the course of the Universe expansion. Further, the negative value of the chemical potential resulting from the entropy constraint ($S>0$) suggests a bosonic massless nature to the phantom particles.

Phantom Accretion by Black Holes and the Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics

The accretion of a phantom fluid with non-zero chemical potential by black holes is discussed with basis on the Generalized Second Law of thermodynamics. For phantom fluids with positive temperature and negative chemical potential we demonstrate that the accretion process is possible, and that the condition guaranteeing the positiveness of the phantom fluid entropy coincides with the one required by Generalized Second Law. In particular, this result provides a complementary confirmation that cosmological phantom fluids do not need to have negative temperatures.

Accelerating Cold Dark Matter Cosmology ($Ω_Λ\equiv 0$)

A new kind of accelerating flat model with no dark energy that is fully dominated by cold dark matter (CDM) is investigated. The number of CDM particles is not conserved and the present accelerating stage is a consequence of the negative pressure describing the irreversible process of gravitational particle creation. A related work involving accelerating CDM cosmology has been discussed before the SNe observations [Lima, Abramo & Germano, Phys. Rev. D53, 4287 (1996)]. However, in order to have a transition from a decelerating to an accelerating regime at low redshifts, the matter creation rate proposed here includes a constant term of the order of the Hubble parameter. In this case, $H_0$ does not need to be small in order to solve the age problem and the transition happens even if the matter creation is negligible during the radiation and part of the matter dominated phase. Therefore, instead of the vacuum dominance at redshifts of the order of a few, the present accelerating stage in this sort of Einstein-de Sitter CDM cosmology is a consequence of the gravitational particle creation process. As an extra bonus, in the present scenario does not exist the coincidence problem that plagues models with dominance of dark energy. The model is able to harmonize a CDM picture with the present age of the universe, the latest measurements of the Hubble parameter and the Supernovae observations.

Conservative Force Fields in Non-Gaussian Statistics

In this letter, we determine the $κ$-distribution function for a gas in the presence of an external field of force described by a potential U(${\bf r}$). In the case of a dilute gas, we show that the $κ$-power law distribution including the potential energy factor term can rigorously be deduced in the framework of kinetic theory with basis on the Vlasov equation. Such a result is significant as a preliminary to the discussion on the role of long range interactions in the Kaniadakis thermostatistics and the underlying kinetic theory.
