Specific heat measurements of the gap structure of the organic superconductors kappa-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br and kappa-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2

We present high resolution heat capacity measurements for the organic superconductors kappa-(ET)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br and kappa-(ET)_2Cu(NCS)_2 in fields up to 14 T. We use the high field data to determine the normal state specific heat and hence extract the behavior of the electronic specific heat C_{el} in the superconducting state in zero and finite fields. We find that in both materials for T/T_c<0.3, C_{el}(H=0)\sim T^2 indicating d-wave superconductivity. Our data are inconsistent with s-wave behavior, but may be fitted to a strong coupling d-wave model over the full temperature range.

Magnetic order in the S=1/2 two-dimensional molecular antiferromagnet, copper pyrazine perchlorate Cu(Pz)_2(ClO_4)_2

We present an investigation of magnetic ordering in the two-dimensional S=1/2 quantum magnet Cu(Pz)_2(ClO_4)_2 using specific heat and zero field muon-spin relaxation (μ^+SR). The magnetic contribution to the specific heat is consistent with an exchange strength of 17.7(3) K. We find unambiguous evidence for a transition to a state of three-dimensional long range order below a critical temperature T_N=4.21(1) K using μ^+SR even though there is no feature in the specific heat at that temperature. The absence of a specific heat anomaly at T_N is consistent with recent theoretical predictions. The ratio of T_N/J=0.24 corresponds to a ratio of intralayer to interlayer exchange constants of |J'/J|=6.8x10^-4, indicative of excellent two-dimensional isolation. The scaled magnetic specific heat of [Cu(Pz)_2(HF_2)]BF_4, a compound with an analogous structure, is essentially identical to that of Cu(Pz)_2(ClO_4)_2 although both differ slightly from the predicted value for an ideal 2D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Spin-zero anomaly in the magnetic quantum oscillations of a two-dimensional metal

We report on an anomalous behavior of the spin-splitting zeros in the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) signal of a quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor. The zeros as well as the angular dependence of the amplitude of the second harmonic deviate remarkably from the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) prediction. In contrast, the angular dependence of the fundamental dHvA amplitude as well as the spin-splitting zeros of the Shubnikov-de Haas signal follow the LK theory. We can explain this behavior by small chemical-potential oscillations and find a very good agreement between theory and experiment. A detailed wave-shape analysis of the dHvA signal corroborates the existence of an oscillating chemical potential.

Resistivity studies under hydrostatic pressure on a low-resistance variant of the quasi-2D organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br: quest for intrinsic scattering contributions

Resistivity measurements have been performed on a low (LR)- and high (HR)-resistance variant of the kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu[N(CN)_2]Br superconductor. While the HR sample was synthesized following the standard procedure, the LR crystal is a result of a somewhat modified synthesis route. According to their residual resistivities and residual resistivity ratios, the LR crystal is of distinctly superior quality. He-gas pressure was used to study the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the different transport regimes for both variants. The main results of these comparative investigations are (i) a significant part of the inelastic-scattering contribution, which causes the anomalous rho(T) maximum in standard HR crystals around 90 K, is sample dependent, i.e. extrinsic in nature, (ii) the abrupt change in rho(T) at T* approx. 40 K from a strongly temperature-dependent behavior at T > T* to an only weakly T-dependent rho(T) at T < T* is unaffected by this scattering contribution and thus marks an independent property, most likely a second-order phase transition, (iii) both variants reveal a rho(T) proportional to AT^2 dependence at low temperatures, i.e. for T_c < T < T_0, although with strongly sample-dependent coefficients A and upper bounds for the T^2 behavior measured by T_0. The latter result is inconsistent with the T^2 dependence originating from coherent Fermi-liquid excitations.

Comparative magnetotransport and Tc measurements on kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(SCN)2 under pressure

We compare magnetotransport measurements under pressure on the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(SCN)$_{2}$ with different pressure-media and discover that the results are pressure media dependent. This pressure-medium dependence is thought to originate from the difference in thermal contraction between the very soft and highly anisotropic sample and the isotropically contracting, but solid pressure medium, thus resulting in non-hydrostatic pressure on the sample. However, comparison of pressure measurements with different media reveals a pressure-medium independent correlation between the superconducting transition temperature, T$_{\rm c}$, and the size of the quasi 2-dimensional Fermi surface pocket and thus the quasi 2-dimensional carrier density in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(SCN)$_{2}$. The observed pressure-induced increase in the quasi 2-dimensional carrier density can be interpreted as a transfer of carriers from quasi 1-dimensional Fermi surface sections, reminiscent of a mechanism in cuprate superconductors, where pressure is known to transfer carriers from the insulating charge reservoir layers into the conducting cuprate sheets.

Angle Dependent Magnetoresistance of the Layered Organic Superconductor κ-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2: Simulation and Experiment

The angle-dependences of the magnetoresistance of two different isotopic substitutions (deuterated and undeuterated) of the layered organic superconductor κ-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2 are presented. The angle dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) arising from the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) and quasi-two-dimensional (Q2D) Fermi surfaces in this material are often confused. By using the Boltzman transport equation extensive simulations of the AMRO are made that reveal the subtle differences between the different species of oscillation. No significant differences are observed in the electronic parameters derived from quantum oscillations and AMRO for the two isotopic substitutions. The interlayer transfer integrals are determined for both isotopic substitutions and a slight difference is observed which may account for the negative isotope effect previously reported [1]. The success of the semi-classical simulations suggests that non-Fermi liquid effects are not required to explain the interlayer-transport in this system.

High field magnetic resonant properties of beta'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3

A systematic electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the low temperature regime for the (ET)2SF5CF2SO3 system was performed in the frequency range of ~200-700 GHz, using backward wave oscillator sources, and at fields up to 25 T. Newly acquired access to the high frequency and fields shows experimental ESR results in agreement with the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation, revealing evidence that the transition seen at 20 K is not of conventional spin-Peierls order. A significant change of the spin resonance spectrum in beta'-(ET)2SF5CF2SO3 at low temperatures, indicates a transition into a three-dimensional-antiferromagnetic (3D AFM) phase.

Campbell Penetration Depth of a Superconductor in the Critical State

The magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,H,j)$ was measured in the presence of a slowly relaxing supercurrent, $j$. In single crystal $\mathrm{Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8}$ below approximately 25 K, $λ(T,H,j)$ is strongly hysteretic. We propose that the irreversibility arises from a shift of the vortex position within its pinning well as $j$ changes. The Campbell length depends upon the ratio $j/j_{c}$ where $j_{c}$ is the critical current defined through the Labusch parameter. Similar effects were observed in other cuprates and in an organic superconductor.

Comparison of the Fermi-surface topologies of kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu(NCS)_2 and its deuterated analogue

We have measured details of the quasi one-dimensional Fermi-surface sections in the organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu(NCS)_2 and its deuterated analogue using angle-dependent millimetre-wave techniques. There are significant differences in the corrugations of the Fermi surfaces in the deuterated and undeuterated salts. We suggest that this is important in understanding the inverse isotope effect, where the superconducting transition temperature rises on deuteration. The data support models for superconductivity which invoke electron-electron interactions depending on the topological properties of the Fermi surface.

Coherent vs incoherent interlayer transport in layered metals

The magnetic-field, temperature, and angular dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of two different quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic superconductors is reported. For $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ we find a well-resolved peak in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance at $Θ= 90^\circ$ (field parallel to the layers). This clear-cut proof for the coherent nature of the interlayer transport is absent for $β$''-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CH$_2$CF$_2$SO$_3$. This and the non-metallic behavior of the magnetoresistance suggest an incoherent quasiparticle motion for the latter 2D metal.

Test for interlayer coherence in a quasi-two-dimensional superconductor

Peaks in the magnetoresistivity of the layered superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$, measured in fields $\leq 45$ T applied within the layers, show that the Fermi surface is extended in the interlayer direction and enable the interlayer transfer integral ($t_{\perp} \approx 0.04$ meV) to be deduced. However, the quasiparticle scattering rate $τ^{-1}$ is such that $\hbar/τ\sim 6t_{\perp}$, implying that $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ meets the criterion used to identify interlayer incoherence. The applicability of this criterion to anisotropic materials is thus shown to be questionable.

Evidence for structural and electronic instabilities at intermediate temperatures in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$X for X=Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl, Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br and Cu(NCS)$_{2}$: Implications for the phase diagram of these quasi-2D organic superconductors

We present high-resolution measurements of the coefficient of thermal expansion $α(T)=\partial \ln l(T)/\partial T$ of the quasi-twodimensional (quasi-2D) salts $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X with X = Cu(NCS)$_2$, Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br and Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl. At intermediate temperatures (B), distinct anomalies reminiscent of second-order phase transitions have been found at $T^\ast = 38$ K and 45 K for the superconducting X = Cu(NCS)$_2$ and Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br salts, respectively. Most interestingly, we find that the signs of the uniaxial pressure coefficients of $T^\ast$ are strictly anticorrelated with those of $T_c$. We propose that $T^\ast$ marks the transition to a spin-density-wave (SDW) state forming on minor, quasi-1D parts of the Fermi surface. Our results are compatible with two competing order parameters that form on disjunct portions of the Fermi surface. At elevated temperatures (C), all compounds show $α(T)$ anomalies that can be identified with a kinetic, glass-like transition where, below a characteristic temperature $T_g$, disorder in the orientational degrees of freedom of the terminal ethylene groups becomes frozen in. We argue that the degree of disorder increases on going from the X = Cu(NCS)$_2$ to Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br and the Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl salt. Our results provide a natural explanation for the unusual time- and cooling-rate dependencies of the ground-state properties in the hydrogenated and deuterated Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br salts reported in the literature.

Thermal activation between Landau levels in the organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$SF$_{5}$CH$_{2}$CF$_{2}$SO$_{3}$

We show that Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the interlayer resistivity of the organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$SF$_{5}$ CH$_{2}$CF$_{2}$SO$_{3}$ become very pronounced in magnetic fields $\sim$~60~T. The conductivity minima exhibit thermally-activated behaviour that can be explained simply by the presence of a Landau gap, with the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surface sheets contributing negligibly to the conductivity. This observation, together with complete suppression of chemical potential oscillations, is consistent with an incommensurate nesting instability of the quasi-one-dimensional sheets.

Incoherent Interplane Conductivity of kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br

The interplane optical spectrum of the organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Br was investigated in the frequency range from 40 to 40,000 cm-1. The optical conductivity was obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis of the reflectance. The absence of a Drude peak at low frequency is consistent with incoherent conductivity but in apparent contradiction to the metallic temperature dependence of the DC resistivity. We set an upper limit to the interplane transfer integral of tb = 0.1 meV. A model of defect-assisted interplane transport can account for this discrepancy. We also assign the phonon lines in the conductivity to the asymmetric modes of the ET molecule.

Electronic Structure of Novel Cation-Radical Salts in High Magnetic Fields

Two organic conducting materials, where unusual aspects of their composition play important roles, are explored: beta''-(BEDT-TTF)2SF5XSO3 which exhibits superconductivity, or a metal-insulator transition (for X=CH2CF2 or CHF respectively), and tau-(P-S, S -DMEDT-TTF)2 (AuBr2) (AuBr2)y which exhibits a large, hysteretic, negative magnetoresistance. Detailed angular dependent magnetoresistance studies that allow a tomographic view of the electronic structure of these materials with increasing magnetic fields are presented.

Field-induced metal-insulator transition in a two-dimensional organic superconductor

The quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor beta-(BEDT-TTF)_2SF_5CH_2CF_2SO_3 (T_c approx 4.4 K)shows very strong Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations which are superimposed on a highly anomalous steady background magnetoresistance, R_b. Comparison with de Haas- van Alphen oscillations allow a reliable estimate of R_b which is crucial for the correct extraction of the SdH signal. At low temperatures and high magnetic fields insulating behavior evolves. The magnetoresistance data violate Kohler's rule, i.e., cannot be described within the framework of semiclassical transport theory, but converge onto a universal curve appropriate for dynamical scaling at a metal-insulator transition.

Paramagnetic limiting of the upper critical field of the layered organic superconductor $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(SCN)_2$

We report detailed measurements of the interlayer magnetoresistance of the layered organic superconductor $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(SCN)_2$ for temperatures down to 0.5 K and fields up to 30 tesla. The upper critical field is determined from the resistive transition for a wide range of temperatures and field directions. For magnetic fields parallel to the layers, the upper critical field increases approximately linearly with decreasing temperature. The upper critical field at low temperatures is compared to the Pauli paramagnetic limit, at which singlet superconductivity should be destroyed by the Zeeman splitting of the electron spins. The measured value is comparable to a value for the paramagnetic limit calculated from thermodynamic quantities but exceeds the limit calculated from BCS theory. The angular dependence of the upper critical field shows a cusp-like feature for fields close to the layers, consistent with decoupled layers.
