Pairing-correlations and particle-number projection methods

A systematic study of the pairing-correlations derived from various particle-number projection methods is performed in an exactly soluble cranked-deformed shell model Hamiltonian. It is shown that most of the approximate particle-number projection methods including the method of Lipkin-Nogami, which is used quite extensively in nuclear structure studies, breakdown in the weak pairing limit. The results obtained from the recently formulated number-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (PHFB) equations, on the other hand, are in complete agreement with the exact solutions of the model Hamiltonian. The pairing-energy calculated from PHFB method is shown to be finite in all the studied limits. More importantly, the numerical work involved in the solution of the PHFB equations appears to be comparable to the solution of the bare HFB equations.

In-Band and Inter-Band B(E2) Values within the Triaxial Projected Shell Model

The Triaxial Projected Shell Model (TPSM) has been successful in providing a microscopic description of the energies of multi-phonon vibrational bands in deformed nuclei. We report here on an extension of the TPSM to allow, for the first time, calculations of B(E2) values connecting gamma- and gamma-gamma-vibrational bands and the ground state band. The method is applied to 166,168Er. It is shown that most of the existing B(E2) data can be reproduced rather well, thus strongly supporting the classification of these states as gamma-vibrational states. However, significant differences between the data and the calculation are seen in those B(E2) values which involve odd-spin states of the gamma-band. Understanding these discrepancies requires accurate experimental measurements and perhaps further improvements of the TPSM.

Chaos and isospin symmetry breaking in rotational nuclei

For nuclei with N = Z, the isospin degree of freedom is important and, for deformed systems, rotational bands of different isospin may be expected at low excitation energies. We have investigated, in a simple model space, the influence of the isospin-breaking Coulomb interaction on the degree of chaoticity of these rotational bands. The statistical measures used rely on an analysis of level-spacing distributions, which are extremely difficult to measure experimentally. We show, however, that the overlap intergrals between states of similar frequency reflect well the degree of chaoticity. This quantity is closely related to the experimentally more accessible gamma-decay ``spreading width''.

On the Solution of the Number-Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Equations

The numerical solution of the recently formulated number-projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations is studied in an exactly soluble cranked-deformed shell model Hamiltonian. It is found that the solution of these number-projected equations involve similar numerical effort as that of bare HFB. We consider that this is a significant progress in the mean-field studies of the quantum many-body systems. The results of the projected calculations are shown to be in almost complete agreement with the exact solutions of the model Hamiltonian. The phase transition obtained in the HFB theory as a function of the rotational frequency is shown to be smeared out with the projection.

Projected shell model study for the yrast-band structure of the proton-rich mass-80 nuclei

A systematic study of the yrast-band structure for the proton-rich, even-even mass-80 nuclei is carried out using projected shell model approach. We describe the the energy spectra, transition quadrupole moments and gyromagnetic factors. The observed variations in energy spectra and transition quadrupole moments in this mass region are discussed in terms of the configuration mixing of the projected deformed Nilsson states as a function of shell filling.

Isovector and isoscalar superfluid phases in rotating nuclei

The subtle interplay between the two nuclear superfluids, isovector T=1 and isoscalar T=0 phases, are investigated in an exactly soluble model. It is shown that T=1 and T=0 pair-modes decouple in the exact calculations with the T=1 pair-energy being independent of the T=0 pair-strength and vice-versa. In the rotating-field, the isoscalar correlations remain constant in contrast to the well known quenching of isovector pairing. An increase of the isoscalar (J=1, T=0) pair-field results in a delay of the bandcrossing frequency. This behaviour is shown to be present only near the N=Z line and its experimental confirmation would imply a strong signature for isoscalar pairing collectivity. The solutions of the exact model are also discussed in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation.

Moments of inertia for multi-quasiparticle configurations

Tilted-axis cranking calculations have been performed for multi-quasiparticle states in well deformed A$\approx$180 nuclei. In the limit of zero pairing, not only are the calculated moments of inertia substantially smaller than for rigid rotation, but also they are close to the experimental values. The moments of inertia are found to be insensitive to dynamic pair correlations.

Symmetry Breaking by Proton-Neutron Pairing

The symmetries of the $t=1$ and $t=0$ pair-fields are different. The consequences for rotational spectra are discussed. For $t=1$, the concept of spontaneous breaking and subsequent restoration of the isospin symmetry turns out to be important. It permits us to describe the proton-neutron pair-correlation within the conventional frame of pairing between like particles. The experimental data are consistent with the presence of a $t=1$ field at low spin in $N\approx Z$ nuclei. For a substantial $t=0$ field, the spectra of even-even and odd-odd $N\approx Z$ nuclei become similar. The possibility of a rotationally induced $ J=1$ pair-field at high spin is considered.

Nuclear properties in early stages of stellar collapse

The spectroscopy of electron capture neutrinos emitted from nearby pre-supernova collapsing stars before the neutrino trapping sets in, can yield useful information on the physical conditions and on the nuclear composition of the core. The neutrino spectrum depends on the thermodynamic conditions of the core, the nuclear abundances, the lepton fractions and relevant nuclear properties. In the pre-trapping core of a core-collapse supernova, the density ranges from $0.1 - 100~10^{10}$ g/cm$^3$ and the temperature from $0.2 - 1.5$ MeV. The nuclear abundances as well as the electron capture rates are thus determined, among other things, by the nuclear binding energies and the free nucleon chemical potentials. Because shell and pairing effects persist strongly up to temperatures of $\simeq 0.5$ MeV, any equation of state (EOS) relevant to this phase of the collapse must reproduce well the zero temperature nuclear properties and it must show a smooth transition to the known high temperature and high density limits. In this work we use the microscopic Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) theory based on a Lagrangian with non-linear self-interactions of the $σ$-field for the neutron-rich nuclei of interest in the $f-p$ shell to determine nuclear chemical potentials. We compare these results with those computed from an EOS calculated with the macroscopic liquid drop model. We also discuss extensions to finite temperature and we incorporate nuclear lattice effects into the microscopic calculations.

Triaxial projected shell model approach

The projected shell model analysis is carried out using the triaxial Nilsson+BCS basis. It is demonstrated that, for an accurate description of the moments of inertia in the transitional region, it is necessary to take the triaxiality into account and perform the three-dimensional angular-momentum projection from the triaxial Nilsson+BCS intrinsic wavefunction.

Rotational alignment near N=Z and proton-neutron correlations

The effects of the residual proton-neutron interactions on bandcrossing features are studied by means of shell model calculations for nucleons in a high-j intruder orbital. The presence of an odd-nucleon shifts the frequency of the alignment of two nucleons of the other kind along the axis of rotation. It is shown that the anomalous delayed crossing observed in nuclei with aligning neutrons and protons occupying the same intruder subshell can be partly attributed to these residual interactions.

Relativistic Mean Field calculations of nuclear properties in early stages of stellar collapse

We use the Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) method to calculate properties of neutron rich, usually deformed nuclei, important for equation of state calculations and which have significant abundance in the early stages of stellar collapse. We compare the results of our microscopic calculations with existing cold nuclear equations of state based on macroscopic liquid drop model and the FRLDM model.
