Highly sensitive controllability of optical bistability in three-level atomic systems

We theoretically investigate the optical bistability phenomenon in an ensemble of $N$ non-interacting three-level atoms trapped inside an optical cavity. The atoms are in a $Λ$-level configuration, where one atomic transition is coupled by a cavity mode, while the other one is coupled by a classical field. In addition, we consider a pumping field driving the cavity mode. With this system, we are able to observe new kinds of hysteresis, while scanning either the frequency of the pumping field or the Rabi frequency (intensity) of the control field. We show that they can be highly controllable via external parameters of the system, achieving very narrow widths, thus being very useful for building new devices, such as small fluctuation detectors in either frequency or intensity of laser fields.

The self-gravity model of longitudinal span of Neptune main arc Fraternite

According to recent works [Tsui PSS \textbf{55}, 237-242 (2007), \textbf{55}, 2042-2044 (2007)], the Neptune Adams ring main arc Fraternite is regarded as captured by the corotation elliptic resonance (CER) potential of Galatea. The minor arcs Egalite(2,1), Liberte, and Courage are located at positions where the time averaged forces, due to the 42-43 corotation-Lindblad resonances under the central field of Neptune, vanish. With adequately chosen Fraternite mass and Galatea eccentricity, this model gives minor arc locations compatible to observed positions, and allows a dynamic transport of materials among arcs. To complement this model, the effect of self-gravity of Fraternite, with a distributed mass, is evaluated together with the CER potential to account for its $10^{0}$ longitudinal span. Although self-gravity is the collective action of all the particles in the arc, each individual particle will see the self-potential with a central maximum as an external potential generated by other particles.

EIT-related phenomena and their mechanical analogs

Systems of interacting classical harmonic oscillators have received considerable attention in the last years as analog models for describing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and associated phenomena. We review these models and investigate their validity for a variety of physical systems using two- and three-coupled harmonic oscillators. From the simplest EIT-$Λ$ configuration and two-coupled single cavity modes we show that each atomic dipole-allowed transition and a single cavity mode can be represented by a damped harmonic oscillator. Thus, we have established a one-to-one correspondence between the classical and quantum dynamical variables. We show the limiting conditions and the equivalent for the EIT dark state in the mechanical system. This correspondence is extended to other systems that present EIT-related phenomena. Examples of such systems are two- and three-level (cavity EIT) atoms interacting with a single mode of an optical cavity, and four-level atoms in a inverted-Y and tripod configurations. The established equivalence between the mechanical and the cavity EIT systems, presented here for the first time, has been corroborated by experimental data. The analysis of the probe response of all these systems also brings to light a physical interpretation for the expectation value of the photon annihilation operator $\left\langle a\right\rangle$. We show it can be directly related to the electric susceptibility of systems, the composition of which includes a driven cavity field mode.

Magnetoelastic and thermal effects in the BiMn2O5 lattice: a high-resolution x-ray diffraction study

High-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements were performed on single crystalline and powder samples of BiMn2O5. A linear temperature dependence of the unit cell volume was found between T_{N}=38$ K and 100 K, suggesting that a low-energy lattice excitation may be responsible for the lattice expansion in this temperature range. Between T* ~ 65 K and T_{N}, all lattice parameters showed incipient magnetoelastic effects, due to short-range spin correlations. An anisotropic strain along the a-direction was also observed below T*. Below T_{N}, a relatively large contraction of the a-parameter following the square of the average sublattice magnetization of Mn was found, indicating that a second-order spin hamiltonian accounts for the magnetic interactions along this direction. On the other hand, the more complex behaviors found for $b$ and $c$ suggest additional magnetic transitions below T_{N} and perhaps higher-order terms in the spin hamiltonian. Polycrystalline samples grown by distinct routes and with nearly homogeneous crystal structure above T_{N} presented structural phase coexistence below T_{N}, indicating a close competition amongst distinct magnetostructural states in this compound.

The Dyer-Roeder relation in a universe with particle production

We have obtained analytical exact solutions of the Dyer-Roeder equation in a cosmological model where creation of particles occurs at the expenses of the gravitational field. We discussed the influences of inhomogeneities in the path of a light beam on the apparent diameter of astrophysical objects and consider both redshift independent as redshift dependent distributions of the inhomogeneities.
