A perturbative approach to the construction of initial data on compact manifolds

We discuss the implementation, to the case of compact manifolds, of the perturbative method of Friedrich-Butscher for the construction of solutions to the vaccum Einstein constraint equations. This method is of a perturbative nature and exploits the properties of the extended constraint equations ---a larger system of equations whose solutions imply a solution to the Einstein constraints. The method is applied to the construction of nonlinear perturbations of constant mean curvature initial data of constant negative sectional curvature. We prove the existence of a neighbourhood of solutions to the constraint equations around such initial data, with particular components of the extrinsic curvature and electric/magnetic parts of the spacetime Weyl curvature prescribed as free data. The space of such free data is parametrised explicitly.

Killing spinor data on distorted black hole horizons and the uniqueness of stationary vacuum black holes

We make use of the black hole holograph construction of [I. Rácz, Stationary black holes as holographs, Class. Quantum Grav. 31, 035006 (2014)] to analyse the existence of Killing spinors in the domain of dependence of the horizons of distorted black holes. In particular, we provide conditions on the bifurcation sphere ensuring the existence of a Killing spinor. These conditions can be understood as restrictions on the curvature of the bifurcation sphere and ensure the existence of an axial Killing vector on the 2-surface. We obtain the most general 2-dimensional metric on the bifurcation sphere for which these curvature conditions are satisfied. Remarkably, these conditions are found to be so restrictive that, in the considered particular case, the free data on the bifurcation surface (determining a distorted black hole spacetime) is completely determined by them. In addition, we formulate further conditions on the bifurcation sphere ensuring that the Killing vector associated to the Killing spinor is Hermitian. Once the existence of a Hermitian Killing vector is guaranteed, one can use a characterisation of the Kerr spacetime due to Mars to identify the particular subfamily of 2-metrics giving rise to a member of the Kerr family in the black hole holograph construction. Our analysis sheds light on the role of asymptotic flatness and curvature conditions on the bifurcation sphere in the context of the problem of uniqueness of stationary black holes. The Petrov type of the considered distorted black hole spacetimes is also determined.

Spherically symmetric Anti-de Sitter-like Einstein-Yang-Mills spacetimes

The conformal field equations are used to discuss the local existence of spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Yang-Mills system which behave asymptotically like the anti-de Sitter spacetime. By using a gauge based on conformally privileged curves we obtain a formulation of the problem in terms of an initial boundary value problem on which a general class of maximally dissipative boundary conditions can be discussed. The relation between these boundary conditions and the notion of mass on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes is analysed.

A class of conformal curves in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime

A class of curves with special conformal properties (conformal curves) is studied on the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. It is shown that initial data for the conformal curves can be prescribed so that the resulting congruence of curves extends smoothly to future and past null infinity. The formation of conjugate points on these congruences is examined. The results of this analysis are expected to be of relevance for the discussion of the Reissner-Nordström spacetime as a solution to the conformal field equations and for the global numerical evaluation of static black hole spacetimes.

A conformal approach for the analysis of the non-linear stability of pure radiation cosmologies

The conformal Einstein equations for a tracefree (radiation) perfect fluid are derived in terms of the Levi-Civita connection of a conformally rescaled metric. These equations are used to provide a non-linear stability result for de Sitter-like tracefree (radiation) perfect fluid Friedman-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker cosmological models. The solutions thus obtained exist globally towards the future and are future geodesically complete.

Asymptotic simplicity and static data

The present article considers time symmetric initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein field equations which in a neighbourhood of infinity have the same massless part as that of some static initial data set. It is shown that the solutions to the regular finite initial value problem at spatial infinity for this class of initial data sets extend smoothly through the critical sets where null infinity touches spatial infinity if and only if the initial data sets coincide with static data in a neighbourhood of infinity. This result highlights the special role played by static data among the class of initial data sets for the Einstein field equations whose development gives rise to a spacetime with a smooth conformal compactification at null infinity.

The "non-Kerrness" of domains of outer communication of black holes and exteriors of stars

In this article we construct a geometric invariant for initial data sets for the vacuum Einstein field equations $(\mathcal{S},h_{ab},K_{ab})$, such that $\mathcal{S}$ is a 3-dimensional manifold with an asymptotically Euclidean end and an inner boundary $\partial \mathcal{S}$ with the topology of the 2-sphere. The hypersurface $\mathcal{S}$ can be though of being in the domain of outer communication of a black hole or in the exterior of a star. The geometric invariant vanishes if and only if $(\mathcal{S},h_{ab},K_{ab})$ is an initial data set for the Kerr spacetime. The construction makes use of the notion of Killing spinors and of an expression for a \emph{Killing spinor candidate} which can be constructed out of concomitants of the Weyl tensor.

A stability result for purely radiative spacetimes

An existence and stability result for a class of purely radiative vacuum spacetimes arising from hyperboloidal data is given. This result generalises semiglobal existence results for Minkowski-like spacetimes to the case where the reference solution contains gravitational radiation. The analysis makes use of the extended conformal field equations and a gauge based on conformal geodesics so that the location and structure of the conformal boundary of the perturbed solutions is known a priori.

On de Sitter-like and Minkowski-like space-times

Friedrich's proofs for the global existence results of de Sitter-like space-times and of semi-global existence of Minkowski-like space-times [Comm. Math. Phys. \textbf{107}, 587 (1986)] are re-examined and discussed, making use of the extended conformal field equations and a gauge based on conformal geodesics. In this gauge the location of the conformal boundary of the space-times is known \emph{a priori} once the initial data has been prescribed. Thus it provides an analysis which is conceptually and calculationally simpler.

From Geometry to Numerics: interdisciplinary aspects in mathematical and numerical relativity

This article reviews some aspects in the current relationship between mathematical and numerical General Relativity. Focus is placed on the description of isolated systems, with a particular emphasis on recent developments in the study of black holes. Ideas concerning asymptotic flatness, the initial value problem, the constraint equations, evolution formalisms, geometric inequalities and quasi-local black hole horizons are discussed on the light of the interaction between numerical and mathematical relativists.

Asymptotic properties of the development of conformally flat data near spatial infinity

Certain aspects of the behaviour of the gravitational field near null and spatial infinity for the developments of asymptotically Euclidean, conformally flat initial data sets are analysed. Ideas and results from two different approaches are combined: on the one hand the null infinity formalism related to the asymptotic characteristic initial value problem and on the other the regular Cauchy initial value problem at spatial infinity which uses Friedrich's representation of spatial infinity as a cylinder. The decay of the Weyl tensor for the developments of the class of initial data under consideration is analysed under some existence and regularity assumptions for the asymptotic expansions obtained using the cylinder at spatial infinity. Conditions on the initial data to obtain developments satisfying the Peeling Behaviour are identified. Further, the decay of the asymptotic shear on null infinity is also examined as one approaches spatial infinity. This decay is related to the possibility of selecting the Poincaré group out of the BMS group in a canonical fashion. It is found that for the class of initial data under consideration, if the development peels, then the asymptotic shear goes to zero at spatial infinity. Expansions of the Bondi mass are also examined. Finally, the Newman-Penrose constants of the spacetime are written in terms of initial data quantities and it is shown that the constants defined at future null infinity are equal to those at past null infinity.

A characterisation of Schwarzschildean initial data

A theorem providing a characterisation of Schwarzschildean initial data sets on slices with an asymptotically Euclidean end is proved. This characterisation is based on the proportionality of the Weyl tensor and its D'Alambertian that holds for some vacuum Petrov Type D spacetimes (e.g. the Schwarzschild spacetime, the C-metric, but not the Kerr solution). The 3+1 decomposition of this proportionality condition renders necessary conditions for an initial data set to be a Schwarzschildean initial set. These conditions can be written as quadratic expressions of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor --and thus, involve only the freely specifiable data. In order to complete our characterisation, a study of which vacuum static Petrov type D spacetimes admit asymptotically Euclidean slices is undertaken. Furthermore, a discussion of the ADM 4-momentum for boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes is given. Finally, a generalisation of our characterisation, valid for Schwarzschildean hyperboloidal initial data sets is put forward.

Time asymmetric spacetimes near null and spatial infinity. II. Expansions of developments of initial data sets with non-smooth conformal metrics

This article uses the conformal Einstein equations and the conformal representation of spatial infinity introduced by Friedrich to analyse the behaviour of the gravitational field near null and spatial infinity for the development of initial data which are, in principle, non-conformally flat and time asymmetric. This article is the continuation of the investigation started in Class. Quantum Grav. 21 (2004) 5457-5492, where only conformally flat initial data sets were considered. For the purposes of this investigation, the conformal metric of the initial hypersurface is assumed to have a very particular type of non-smoothness at infinity in order to allow for the presence of non-Schwarzschildean initial data sets in the class under study. The calculation of asymptotic expansions of the development of these initial data sets reveals --as in the conformally flat case-- the existence of a hierarchy of obstructions to the smoothness of null infinity which are expressible in terms of the initial data. This allows for the possibility of having spacetimes where future and past null infinity have different degrees of smoothness. A conjecture regarding the general structure of the hierarchy of obstructions is presented.

Time asymmetric spacetimes near null and spatial infinity. I. Expansions of developments of conformally flat data

The Conformal Einstein equations and the representation of spatial infinity as a cylinder introduced by Friedrich are used to analyse the behaviour of the gravitational field near null and spatial infinity for the development of data which are asymptotically Euclidean, conformally flat and time asymmetric. Our analysis allows for initial data whose second fundamental form is more general than the one given by the standard Bowen-York Ansatz. The Conformal Einstein equations imply upon evaluation on the cylinder at spatial infinity a hierarchy of transport equations which can be used to calculate in a recursive way asymptotic expansions for the gravitational field. It is found that the the solutions to these transport equations develop logarithmic divergences at certain critical sets where null infinity meets spatial infinity. Associated to these, there is a series of quantities expressible in terms of the initial data (obstructions), which if zero, preclude the appearance of some of the logarithmic divergences. The obstructions are, in general, time asymmetric. That is, the obstructions at the intersection of future null infinity with spatial infinity are different, and do not generically imply those obtained at the intersection of past null infinity with spatial infinity. The latter allows for the possibility of having spacetimes where future and past null infinity have different degrees of smoothness. Finally, it is shown that if both sets of obstructions vanish up to a certain order, then the initial data has to be asymptotically Schwarzschildean to some degree.

Asymptotic expansions of the Cotton-York tensor on slices of stationary spacetimes

We discuss expansions for the Cotton-York tensor near infinity for arbitrary slices of stationary spacetimes. From these expansions it follows directly that a necessary condition for the existence of conformally flat slices in stationary solutions is the vanishing of a certain quantity of quadrupolar nature (obstruction). The obstruction is nonzero for the Kerr solution. Thus, the Kerr metric admits no conformally flat slices. An analysis of higher orders in the expansions of the Cotton-York tensor for solutions such that the obstruction vanishes suggests that the only stationary solution admitting conformally flat slices are the Schwarzschild family of solutions.

The Newtonian limit of spacetimes describing uniformly accelerated particles

We discuss the Newtonian limit of boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes by means of the Ehler's frame theory. Conditions for the existence of such a limit are given and, in particular, we show that asymptotic flatness is an essential requirement for the existence of such a limit. Consequently, generalized boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes describing particles moving in uniform fields will not possess a Newtonian limit. In the cases where the boost-rotation symmetric spacetime is asymptotically flat and its Newtonian limit exists, then it is non-zero only for the instant of time symmetry and its value is given by a Poisson integral. The relation of this result with the (Newtonian) gravitational potential suggested by the weak field approximation is discussed. We illustrate our analysis through some examples: the two monopoles solution, the Curzon-Chazy particle solution, the generalized Bonnor-Swaminarayan solution, and the C metric.

Early radiative properties of the developments of time symmetric, conformally flat initial data

Using a representation of spatial infinity based in the properties of conformal geodesics, the first terms of an expansion for the Bondi mass for the development of time symmetric, conformally flat initial data are calculated. As it is to be expected, the Bondi mass agrees with the ADM at the sets where null infinity ``touches'' spatial infinity. The second term in the expansion is proportional to the sum of the squared norms of the Newman-Penrose constants of the spacetime. In base of this result it is argued that these constants may provide a measure of the incoming radiation contained in the spacetime. This is illustrated by means of the Misner and Brill-Lindquist data sets.

Boost-rotation symmetric type D radiative metrics in Bondi coordinates

The asymptotic properties of the solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell equations with boost-rotation symmetry and Petrov type D are studied. We find series solutions to the pertinent set of equations which are suitable for a late time descriptions in coordinates which are well adapted for the description of the radiative properties of spacetimes (Bondi coordinates). By calculating the total charge, Bondi and NUT mass and the Newman-Penrose constants of the spacetimes we provide a physical interpretation of the free parameters of the solutions. Additional relevant aspects on the asymptotics and radiative properties of the spacetimes considered, such as the possible polarization states of the gravitational and electromagnetic field, are discussed through the way.
