Supersymmetric string model with 30 kappa--symmetries in an extended D=11 superspace and 30/ 32 BPS states

A supersymmetric string model in the D=11 superspace maximally extended by antisymmetric tensor bosonic coordinates, $Σ^{(528|32)}$, is proposed. It possesses 30 $κ$-symmetries and 32 target space supersymmetries. The usual preserved supersymmetry-$κ$-symmetry correspondence suggests that it describes the excitations of a BPS state preserving all but two supersymmetries. The model can also be formulated in any $Σ^{({n(n+1)\over 2}|n)}$ superspace, n=32 corresponding to D=11. It may also be treated as a `higher--spin generalization' of the usual Green--Schwarz superstring. Although the global symmetry of the model is a generalization of the super--Poincaré group, $Σ^{({n(n+1)\over 2}|n)}\times\supset Sp(n)$, it may be formulated in terms of constrained OSp(2n|1) orthosymplectic supertwistors. We work out this supertwistor realization and its Hamiltonian dynamics. We also give the supersymmetric p-brane generalization of the model. In particular, the $Σ^{(528|32)}$ supersymmetric membrane model describes excitations of a 30/32 BPS state, as the $Σ^{(528|32)}$ supersymmetric string does, while the supersymmetric 3-brane and 5-brane correspond, respectively, to 28/32 and 24/32 BPS states.

Optimally defined Racah-Casimir operators for su(n) and their eigenvalues for various classes of representations

This paper deals with the striking fact that there is an essentially canonical path from the $i$-th Lie algebra cohomology cocycle, $i=1,2,... l$, of a simple compact Lie algebra $\g$ of rank $l$ to the definition of its primitive Casimir operators $C^{(i)}$ of order $m_i$. Thus one obtains a complete set of Racah-Casimir operators $C^{(i)}$ for each $\g$ and nothing else. The paper then goes on to develop a general formula for the eigenvalue $c^{(i)}$ of each $C^{(i)}$ valid for any representation of $\g$, and thereby to relate $c^{(i)}$ to a suitably defined generalised Dynkin index. The form of the formula for $c^{(i)}$ for $su(n)$ is known sufficiently explicitly to make clear some interesting and important features. For the purposes of illustration, detailed results are displayed for some classes of representation of $su(n)$, including all the fundamental ones and the adjoint representation.

Higher order BRST and anti-BRST operators and cohomology for compact Lie algebras

After defining cohomologically higher order BRST and anti-BRST operators for a compact simple algebra {\cal G}, the associated higher order Laplacians are introduced and the corresponding supersymmetry algebra $Σ$ is analysed. These operators act on the states generated by a set of fermionic ghost fields transforming under the adjoint representation. In contrast with the standard case, for which the Laplacian is given by the quadratic Casimir, the higher order Laplacians $W$ are not in general given completely in terms of the Casimir-Racah operators, and may involve the ghost number operator. The higher order version of the Hodge decomposition is exhibited. The example of su(3) is worked out in detail, including the expression of its higher order Laplacian W.

Superconformal mechanics, black holes, and non-linear realizations

The OSp(2|2)-invariant planar dynamics of a D=4 superparticle near the horizon of a large mass extreme black hole is described by an N=2 superconformal mechanics, with the SO(2) charge being the superparticle's angular momentum. The {\it non-manifest} superconformal invariance of the superpotential term is shown to lead to a shift in the SO(2) charge by the value of its coefficient, which we identify as the orbital angular momentum. The full SU(1,1|2)-invariant dynamics is found from an extension to N=4 superconformal mechanics.

On the general structure of gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten terms

The problem of gauging a closed form is considered. When the target manifold is a simple Lie group G, it is seen that there is no obstruction to the gauging of a subgroup H\subset G if we may construct from the form a cocycle for the relative Lie algebra cohomology (or for the equivariant cohomology), and an explicit general expression for these cocycles is given. The common geometrical structure of the gauged closed forms and the D'Hoker and Weinberg effective actions of WZW type, as well as the obstructions for their existence, is also exhibited and explained.

Effective actions, relative cohomology and Chern Simons forms

The explicit expression of all the WZW effective actions for a simple group G broken down to a subgroup H is established in a simple and direct way, and the formal similarity of these actions to the Chern-Simons forms is explained. Applications are also discussed.

Central Extensions of the Quasi-orthogonal Lie algebras

We determine the central extensions of a whole family of Lie algebras, obtained by the method of graded contractions from so(N+1), N arbitrary. All the inhomogeneous orthogonal and pseudo-orthogonal algebras are members of this family, as well as a large number of other non-semisimple algebras, all of which have at least a semidirect structure (in some cases two or more). The dimensions of their second cohomology groups H^2(G,R) and the explicit expression of their central extensions are given.

Invariant tensors for simple groups

The forms of the invariant primitive tensors for the simple Lie algebras A_l, B_l, C_l and D_l are investigated. A new family of symmetric invariant tensors is introduced using the non-trivial cocycles for the Lie algebra cohomology. For the A_l algebra it is explicitly shown that the generic forms of these tensors become zero except for the l primitive ones and that they give rise to the l primitive Casimir operators. Some recurrence and duality relations are given for the Lie algebra cocycles. Tables for the 3- and 5-cocycles for su(3) and su(4) are also provided. Finally, new relations involving the d and f su(n) tensors are given.

On the generalizations of Poisson structures

The characterization of the Nambu-Poisson n-tensors as a subfamily of the Generalized-Poisson ones recently introduced (and here extended to the odd order case) is discussed. The homology and cohomology complexes of both structures are compared, and some physical considerations are made.

Higher-order simple Lie algebras

It is shown that the non-trivial cocycles on simple Lie algebras may be used to introduce antisymmetric multibrackets which lead to higher-order Lie algebras, the definition of which is given. Their generalised Jacobi identities turn out to be satisfied by the antisymmetric tensors (or higher-order `structure constants') which characterise the Lie algebra cocycles. This analysis allows us to present a classification of the higher-order simple Lie algebras as well as a constructive procedure for them. Our results are synthesised by the introduction of a single, complete BRST operator associated with each simple algebra.

The Z_2-graded Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket and generalized super-Poisson structures

The super or Z_2-graded Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket is introduced. Using it, new generalized super-Poisson structures are found which are given in terms of certain graded-skew-symmetric contravariant tensors Λof even order. The corresponding super `Jacobi identities' are expressed by stating that these tensors have zero super Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket with themselves [Λ,Λ]=0. As a particular case, we provide the linear generalized super-Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple superalgebras with a non-degenerate Killing metric. The su(3,1) superalgebra is given as a generic example.

Graded contractions and bicrossproduct structure of deformed inhomogeneous algebras

A family of deformed Hopf algebras corresponding to the classical maximal isometry algebras of zero-curvature N-dimensional spaces (the inhomogeneous algebras iso(p,q), p+q=N, as well as some of their contractions) are shown to have a bicrossproduct structure. This is done for both the algebra and, in a low-dimensional example, for the (dual) group aspects of the deformation.

Multibracket simple Lie algebras

We introduce higher-order (or multibracket) simple Lie algebras that generalize the ordinary Lie algebras. Their `structure constants' are given by Lie algebra cohomology cocycles which, by virtue of being such, satisfy a suitable generalization of the Jacobi identity. Finally, we introduce a nilpotent, complete BRST operator associated with the l multibracket algebras which are based on a given simple Lie algebra of rank l.

Generalized Poisson structures

New generalized Poisson structures are introduced by using skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order. The corresponding `Jacobi identities' are given by the vanishing of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. As an example, we provide the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.

The Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket, cohomology and generalized Poisson structures

Newly introduced generalized Poisson structures based on suitable skew-symmetric contravariant tensors of even order are discussed in terms of the Schouten-Nijenhuis bracket. The associated `Jacobi identities' are expressed as conditions on these tensors, the cohomological contents of which is given. In particular, we determine the linear generalized Poisson structures which can be constructed on the dual spaces of simple Lie algebras.

Deformed and extended Galilei group Hopf algebras

The $\hatκ$-deformed extended Galilei Hopf group algebra, ${\rm Fun}_{\hatκ}(\tilde G_{(m)})$, is introduced. It provides an example of a cocycle bicrossproduct structure, and is shown to be the contraction limit of a pseudoextension of the $κ$-Poincaré group algebra. The possibility of obtaining another deformed extended Galilei groups is discussed, including one obtained from a non-standard Poincaré deformation.

Contractions, Hopf algebra extensions and cov. differential calculus

We re-examine all the contractions related with the ${\cal U}_q(su(2))$ deformed algebra and study the consequences that the contraction process has for their structure. We also show using ${\cal U}_q(su(2))\times{\cal U}(u(1))$ as an example that, as in the undeformed case, the contraction may generate Hopf algebra cohomology. We shall show that most of the different Hopf algebra deformations obtained have a bicrossproduct or a cocycle bicrossproduct structure, for which we shall also give their dual `group' versions. The bicovariant differential calculi on the deformed spaces associated with the contracted algebras and the requirements for their existence are examined as well.
