Production of Xi_c^0 and Xi_b in Z decays and lifetime measurement of Xi_b

The charmed strange baryon Xi_c^0 was searched for in the decay channel Xi_c^0 -> Xi- pi+, and the beauty strange baryon Xi_b in the inclusive channel Xi_b -> Xi- l- anti-nu X, using the 3.5 million hadronic Z events collected by the DELPHI experiment in the years 1992--1995. The Xi- was reconstructed through the decay Xi- -> Lambda pi-, using a constrained fit method for cascade decays. An iterative discriminant analysis was used for the Xi_c^0 and Xi_b selection. The production rates were measured to be f_{Xi_c^0} x BR(Xi_c^0 -> Xi- pi+)= (4.7 +/- 1.4 (stat.) +/- 1.1 (syst.))10^{-4} per hadronic Z decay, and BR(b -> Xi_b) x BR(Xi_b -> Xi- l- X)= (3.0 +/- 1.0 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))10^{-4} for each lepton species (electron or muon). The lifetime of the Xi_b baryon was measured to be tau_{Xi_b} = 1.45{^{+0.55}_{-0.43}} (stat.) +/- 0.13 (syst.) ps. A combination with the previous DELPHI lifetime measurement gives tau_{Xi_b} = 1.48{^{+0.40}_{-0.31}} (stat.) +/- 0.12 (syst.) ps.

Charged Particle Multiplicity in Three-Jet Events and Two-Gluon Systems

The charged particle multiplicity in hadronic three-jet events from Z decays is investigated. The topology dependence of the event multiplicity is found to be well described by a modified leading logarithmic prediction. A parameter fit of the prediction to the data yields a measurement of the colour factor ratio C_A/C_F with the result C_A/C_F = 2.261 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.036 (exp.) +/- 0.066 (theo.) in agreement with the SU(3) expectation of QCD. The quark-related contribution to the event multiplicity is subtracted from the three-jet event multiplicity resulting in a measurement of the multiplicity of two-gluon colour-singlet states over a wide energy range. The ratios r=N_{gg}(s)/N_{q qbar}(s) of the gluon and quark multiplicities and r^{(1)}=N_{gg}'(s)/N_{q qbar}'(s) of their derivatives are compared with perturbative calculations. While a good agreement between calculations and data is observed for r^{(1)}, larger deviations are found for r indicating that non-perturbative effects are more important for r than for r^{(1)}.

Determination of heavy quark non-perturbative parameters from spectral moments in semileptonic B decays

Moments of the hadronic invariant mass and of the lepton energy spectra in semileptonic B decays have been determined with the data recorded by the DELPHI detector at LEP. From measurements of the inclusive b-hadron semileptonic decays, and imposing constraints from other measurements on b- and c-quark masses, the first three moments of the lepton energy distribution and of the hadronic mass distribution, have been used to determine parameters which enter into the extraction of |V_cb| from the measurement of the inclusive b-hadron semileptonic decay width. The values obtained in the kinetic scheme are: m_b(1 GeV) = 4.591 +/- 0.062 +/- 0.039 +/- 0.005 GeV/c^2 m_c(1 GeV) = 1.170 +/- 0.093 +/- 0.055 +/- 0.005 GeV/c^2 mu_{pi}^2(1 GeV) = 0.399 +/- 0.048 +/- 0.034 +/- 0.087 GeV^2 \tildeρ_D^3 = 0.053 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.011 +/- 0.026 GeV^3, and include corrections at order 1/m_b^3. Using these results, and present measurements of the inclusive semileptonic decay partial width of b-hadrons at LEP, an accurate determination of |V_cb| is obtained: |V_cb| = 0.0421 x (1 +/- 0.014 (meas.) +/- 0.014 (fit) +/- 0.015 (th.)).

Bose-Einstein Correlations in W+W- events at LEP2

Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between final state particles in the reaction e+e- -> W+W- -> q_1 anti-q_2 q_3 anti-q_4 have been studied. Data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 550 pb^{-1}, recorded by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV, were analysed. An indication for inter-W BEC between like-sign particles has been found at the level of 2.4 standard deviations of the combined statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Determination of A_{FB}^b at the Z pole using inclusive charge reconstruction and lifetime tagging

A novel high precision method measures the b-quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Z pole on a sample of 3,560,890 hadronic events collected with the DELPHI detector in 1992 to 2000. An enhanced impact parameter tag provides a high purity b sample. For event hemispheres with a reconstructed secondary vertex the charge of the corresponding quark or anti-quark is determined using a neural network which combines in an optimal way the full available charge information from the vertex charge, the jet charge and from identified leptons and hadrons. The probability of correctly identifying b-quarks and anti-quarks is measured on the data themselves comparing the rates of double hemisphere tagged like-sign and unlike-sign events. The b-quark forward-backward asymmetry is determined from the differential asymmetry, taking small corrections due to hemisphere correlations and background contributions into account. The results for different centre-of-mass energies are: A_{FB}^b (89.449 GeV) = 0.0637 \pm 0.0143(stat.) \pm 0.0017(syst.) A_{FB}^b (91.231 GeV) = 0.0958 \pm 0.0032(stat.) \pm 0.0014(syst.) A_{FB}^b (92.990 GeV) = 0.1041 \pm 0.0115(stat.) \pm 0.0024(syst.) Combining these results yields the b-quark pole asymmetry A_{FB}^{b,0} = 0.0972 \pm 0.0030(stat.) \pm 0.0014(syst.)

Coherent Soft Particle Production in Z Decays into Three Jets

Low-energy particle production perpendicular to the event plane in three-jet events produced in Z decays in e+e- annihilation is measured and compared to that perpendicular to the event axis in two-jet events. The topology dependence of the hadron production ratio is found to agree with a leading-order QCD prediction. This agreement and especially the need for the presence of a destructive interference term gives evidence for the coherent nature of gluon radiation. Hadron production in three-jet events is found to be directly proportional to a single topological scale function of the inter-jet angles. The slope of the dependence of the multiplicity with respect to the topological scale was measured to be: 2.211 +/- 0.014 (stat.) +/- 0.053 (syst.) in good agreement with the expectation given by the colour-factor ratio C_A / C_F = 9/4. This result strongly supports the assumption of local parton-hadron duality, LPHD, at low hadron momentum.

Photon Events with Missing Energy in e+e- Collisions at sqrt{s} = 130 to 209 GeV

The production of single- and multi-photon events has been studied in the reaction e+e- -> gamma (gamma) + invisible particles. The data collected with the DELPHI detector during the years 1999 and 2000 at centre-of-mass energies between 191 GeV and 209 GeV was combined with earlier data to search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model. The measured number of light neutrino families was consistent with three and the absence of an excess of events beyond that predicted by the Standard Model processes was used to set limits on new physics. Both model-independent searches and searches for new processes predicted by supersymmetric and extra-dimensional models have been made. Limits on new non-standard model interactions between neutrinos and electrons were also determined.

Measurement of the energy dependence of hadronic jet rates and the strong coupling alpha_s from the four-jet rate with the DELPHI detector at LEP

Hadronic events from the data collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP within the energy range from 89 GeV to 209 GeV are selected, their jet rates are determined and compared to predictions of four different event generators. One of them is the recently developed APACIC++ generator which performs a massive matrix element calculation matched to a parton shower followed by string fragmentation. The four-jet rate is used to measure alpha_s in the next-to-leading-order approximation yielding alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1175 +/- 0.0030. The running of alpha_s determined by using four-jet events has been tested. The logarithmic energy slope is measured to be dα_s^{-1} / d\log E_{cm} = 1.14 +/- 0.36. Since the analysis is based on four-jet final states it represents an alternative approach to previous DELPHI alpha_s measurements using event shape distributions.

Searches for Neutral Higgs Bosons in Extended Models

Searches for neutral Higgs bosons produced at LEP in association with Z bosons, in pairs and in the Yukawa process are presented in this paper. Higgs boson decays into b quarks, tau leptons, or other Higgs bosons are considered, giving rise to four-b, four-b+jets, six-b and four-tau final states, as well as mixed modes with b quarks and tau leptons. The whole mass domain kinematically accessible at LEP in these topologies is searched. The analysed data set covers both the LEP1 and LEP2 energy ranges and exploits most of the luminosity recorded by the DELPHI experiment. No convincing evidence for a signal is found, and results are presented in the form of mass-dependent upper bounds on coupling factors (in units of model-independent reference cross-sections) for all processes, allowing interpretation of the data in a large class of models.

A Precise Measurement of the Tau Lifetime

The tau lepton lifetime has been measured with the e+e- -> tau+tau- events collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP in the years 1991-1995. Three different methods have been exploited, using both one-prong and three-prong tau decay channels. Two measurements have been made using events in which both taus decay to a single charged particle. Combining these measurements gave tau_tau (1 prong) = 291.8 +/- 2.3 (stat) +/- 1.5 (sys) fs. A third measurement using taus which decayed to three charged particles yielded tau_tau (3 prong) = 288.6 +/- 2.4 (stat) +/- 1.3 (sys) fs. These were combined with previous DELPHI results to measure the tau lifetime, using the full LEP1 data sample, to be tau_tau = 290.9 +/- 1.4 (stat) +/- 1.0 (sys) fs.

Determination of the e+e- -> gamma gamma (gamma) cross-section at LEP 2

A test of the benchmark QED process e+e- -> gamma gamma (gamma) is reported, using the data collected with the DELPHI detector at LEP 2. The data analysed were recorded at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 161 GeV to 208 GeV and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 656.4 pb^{-1}. The Born cross-section for the process e+e- -> gamma gamma (gamma) was determined, confirming the validity of QED at the highest energies ever attained in electron-positron collisions. Lower limits on the parameters of a number of possible deviations from QED, predicted within theoretical frameworks expressing physics beyond the Standard Model, were derived.

Search for supersymmetric particles assuming R-parity non-conservation in e+e- collisions at sqrt{s} = 192 to 208 GeV

Searches for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption of non-conservation of R-parity with a dominant LLEbar or UbarDbarDbar term have been performed using the data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies from 192 up to 208 GeV. No excess of data above Standard Model expectations was observed. The results were used to constrain the MSSM parameter space and to derive limits on the masses of supersymmetric particles.

Search for fermiophobic Higgs bosons in final states with photons at LEP 2

Higgs boson production with subsequent decay to photons was searched for in the data collected by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of nearly 650 pb^{-1}. No evidence for a signal was found, and limits were set on h0Z0 and h0A0 production with h0 decay to photons. These results were used to exclude regions in the parameter space of fermiophobic scenarios of Two Higgs Doublet Models.

Study of Tau-pair Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at LEP and Limits on the Anomalous Electromagnetic Moments of the Tau Lepton

Tau-pair production in the process e+e- -> e+e-tau+tau- was studied using data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 during the years 1997 - 2000. The corresponding integrated luminosity is 650 pb^{-1}. The values of the cross-section obtained are found to be in agreement with QED predictions. Limits on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton are deduced.

The measurement of alpha_s from event shapes with the DELPHI detector at the highest LEP energies

Hadronic event shape distributions are determined from data in e+e- collisions between 183 and 207 GeV. From these the strong coupling alpha_s is extracted in O(alpha_s^2), NLLA and matched O(alpha_s^2)+NLLA theory. Hadronisation corrections evaluated with fragmentation model generators as well as an analytical power ansatz are applied. Comparing these measurements to those obtained at and around M_Z allows a combined measurement of alpha_s from all DELPHI data and a test of the energy dependence of the strong coupling.

The data analysed have been accumulated at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 208 GeV. Limits at 95% confidence level were obtained on the anomalous coupling parameters kappa_gamma and kappa_Z.

Search for Charged Higgs Bosons at LEP in General Two Higgs Doublet Models

A search for pair-produced charged Higgs bosons was performed in the data collected by the DELPHI detector at LEP II at centre-of-mass energies from 189 GeV to 209 GeV. Five different final states, tau+ nu_tau tau- anti-nu_tau, c sbar cbar s, c sbar tau- anti-nu_tau, W* A W* A and W* A tau- anti-nu_tau were considered, accounting for the major expected decays in type I and type II Two Higgs Doublet Models. No significant excess of data compared to the expected Standard Model processes was observed. The existence of a charged Higgs boson with mass lower than 76.7 GeV/c^2 (type I) or 74.4 GeV/c^2 (type II) is excluded at the 95% confidence level, for a wide range of the model parameters. Model independent cross-section limits have also been calculated.

Search for B0_s - anti-B0_s oscillations in DELPHI using high-p_t leptons

Oscillations in the B0_s - anti-B0_s system were studied in events selected from about 4.3 million hadronic Z^0 decays registered by DELPHI between 1992 and 2000. This paper presents updates of two published analyses ([11,12]). The first analysis, which utilizes leptons emitted with large momentum transverse to a jet, was improved by means of a better algorithm for the vertex reconstuction and a new algorithm for flavour-tagging at production time. The second analysis, which utilizes D_s-lepton events, was improved by optimizing the treatment of proper time resolution. No signal of B0_s oscillations was observed and limits on the mass difference between the physical B0_s states were obtained to be: Δm_s > 8.0 ps^{-1} at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Δm_s = 9.1 ps^{-1} in the high p_t lepton analysis and Δm_s > 4.9 ps^{-1} at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Δm_s = 8.6 ps^{-1} in the D_s-lepton analysis. Previously published results on these analyses are superseed. The combination of these results with those obtained in other independent analyses previously performed in DELPHI (D_s-hadron, exclusive B0_s, inclusive vertex) gives: Δm_s > 8.5 ps^{-1} at the 95% C.L. with a sensitivity of Δm_s = 12.0 ps^{-1}.
