The Quantum Spacetime of c>0 2d Gravity

We review recent developments in the understanding of the fractal properties of quantum spacetime of 2d gravity coupled to c>0 conformal matter. In particular we discuss bounds put by numerical simulations using dynamical triangulations on the value of the Hausdorff dimension d_H obtained from scaling properties of two point functions defined in terms of geodesic distance. Further insight to the fractal structure of spacetime is obtained from the study of the loop length distribution function which reveals that the 0 = 5.

The quantum space-time of c=-2 gravity

We study the fractal structure of space-time of two-dimensional quantum gravity coupled to c=-2 conformal matter by means of computer simulations. We find that the intrinsic Hausdorff dimension d_H = 3.58 +/- 0.04. This result supports the conjecture d_H = -2 α_1/α_{-1}, where α_n is the gravitational dressing exponent of a spinless primary field of conformal weight (n+1,n+1), and it disfavours the alternative prediction d_H = 2/|γ|. On the other hand ~ r^{2n} for n>1 with good accuracy, i.e. the boundary length l has an anomalous dimension relative to the area of the surface.

The Two-point Function of c=-2 Matter Coupled to 2D Quantum Gravity

We construct a reparametrization invariant two-point function for c=-2 conformal matter coupled to two-dimensional quantum gravity. From the two-point function we extract the critical indices νand η. The results support the quantum gravity version of Fisher's scaling relation. Our approach is based on the transfer matrix formalism and exploits the formulation of the c=-2 string as an O(n) model on a random lattice.

Improved determination of the classical sphaleron transition rate

We determine the sphaleron transition rate using real time lattice simulations of the classical system. An improved definition of the lattice topological charge allows us to obtain a more reliable estimate of the transition rate. For an SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs system in the broken phase we find the transition rate to be strongly suppressed, and we have observed no sphaleron transitions in the range of coupling constants used. For a pure SU(2) Yang-Mills system in large volumes the rate behaves as $κ(α_w T)^4$, with $κ$ slightly decreasing as the lattice spacing is reduced. If the lattice size is reduced to about twice the magnetic screening length, the rate is suppressed by finite-size effects, and $κ$ is approximately proportional to the lattice spacing. Our rate measurements are supplemented by analysis of gauge field correlation functions in the Coulomb gauge.

Singularities of the Partition Function for the Ising Model Coupled to 2d Quantum Gravity

We study the zeros in the complex plane of the partition function for the Ising model coupled to 2d quantum gravity for complex magnetic field and real temperature, and for complex temperature and real magnetic field, respectively. We compute the zeros by using the exact solution coming from a two matrix model and by Monte Carlo simulations of Ising spins on dynamical triangulations. We present evidence that the zeros form simple one-dimensional curves in the complex plane, and that the critical behaviour of the system is governed by the scaling of the distribution of the singularities near the critical point. Despite the small size of the systems studied, we can obtain a reasonable estimate of the (known) critical exponents.

Spikes in Quantum Regge Calculus

We demonstrate by explicit calculation of the DeWitt-like measure in two-dimensional quantum Regge gravity that it is highly non-local and that the average values of link lengths $l, $, do not exist for sufficient high powers of $n$. Thus the concept of length has no natural definition in this formalism and a generic manifold degenerates into spikes. This might explain the failure of quantum Regge calculus to reproduce the continuum results of two-dimensional quantum gravity. It points to severe problems for the Regge approach in higher dimensions.

On the Connection Between 2d Topological Gravity and the Reduced Hermitian Matrix Model

We discuss how concepts such as geodesic length and the volume of space-time can appear in 2d topological gravity. We then construct a detailed mapping between the reduced Hermitian matrix model and 2d topological gravity at genus zero. This leads to a complete solution of the counting problem for planar graphs with vertices of even coordination number. The connection between multi-critical matrix models and multi-critical topological gravity at genus zero is studied in some detail.

A New Family of Integrable Extended Multi-band Hubbard Hamiltonians

We consider exactly solvable 1d multi-band fermionic Hamiltonians, which have affine quantum group symmetry for all values of the deformation. The simplest Hamiltonian is a multi-band t-J model with vanishing spin-spin interaction, which is the affinization of an underlying XXZ model. We also find a multi-band generalization of standard t-J model Hamiltonian.

Non-critical open strings beyond the semi-classical approximation

We studied the lowest order quantum corrections to the macroscopic wave functions $Γ(A,\ell)$ of non-critical string theory using the semi-classical expansion of Liouville theory. By carefully taking the perimeter constraint into account we obtained a new type of boundary condition for the Liouville field which is compatible with the reparametrization invariance of the boundary and which is not only a mixture of Dirichlet and Neumann types but also involves an integral of an exponential of the Liouville field along the boundary. This condition contains an unknown function of $A/\ell^2$. We determined this function by computing part of the one-loop corrections to $Γ(A,\ell)$.

Quantum geometry of 2d gravity coupled to unitary matter

We show that there exists a divergent correlation length in 2d quantum gravity for the matter fields close to the critical point provided one uses the invariant geodesic distance as the measure of distance. The corresponding reparameterization invariant two-point functions satisfy all scaling relations known from the ordinary theory of critical phenomena and the KPZ exponents are determined by the power-like fall off of these two-point functions. The only difference compared to flat space is the appearance of a dynamically generated fractal dimension d_h in the scaling relations. We analyze numerically the fractal properties of space-time for Ising and three-states Potts model coupled to 2d dimensional quantum gravity using finite size scaling as well as small distance scaling of invariant correlation functions. Our data are consistent with d_h=4, but we cannot rule out completely the conjecture d_H = -2α_1/α_{-1}, where α_{-n} is the gravitational dressing exponent of a spin-less primary field of conformal weight (n+1,n+1). We compute the moments and the loop-length distribution function and show that the fractal properties associated with these observables are identical, with good accuracy, to the pure gravity case.

The geometry of dynamical triangulations

We discuss the geometry of dynamical triangulations associated with 3-dimensional and 4-dimensional simplicial quantum gravity. We provide analytical expressions for the canonical partition function in both cases, and study its large volume behavior. In the space of the coupling constants of the theory, we characterize the infinite volume line and the associated critical points. The results of this analysis are found to be in excellent agreement with the MonteCarlo simulations of simplicial quantum gravity. In particular, we provide an analytical proof that simply-connected dynamically triangulated 4-manifolds undergo a higher order phase transition at a value of the inverse gravitational coupling given by 1.387, and that the nature of this transition can be concealed by a bystable behavior. A similar analysis in the 3-dimensional case characterizes a value of the critical coupling (3.845) at which hysteresis effects are present.

Quantum geometry of topological gravity

We study a c=-2 conformal field theory coupled to two-dimensional quantum gravity by means of dynamical triangulations. We define the geodesic distance r on the triangulated surface with N triangles, and show that dim[r^{d_H}]= dim[N], where the fractal dimension d_H = 3.58 +/- 0.04. This result lends support to the conjecture d_H = -2α_1/α_{-1}, where α_{-n} is the gravitational dressing exponent of a spin-less primary field of conformal weight (n+1,n+1), and it disfavors the alternative prediction d_H = -2/γ_{str}. On the other hand, we find dim[l] = dim[r^2] with good accuracy, where l is the length of one of the boundaries of a circle with (geodesic) radius r, i.e. the length l has an anomalous dimension relative to the area of the surface. It is further shown that the spectral dimension d_s = 1.980 +/- 0.014 for the ensemble of (triangulated) manifolds used. The results are derived using finite size scaling and a very efficient recursive sampling technique known previously to work well for c=-2.

Spin-spin correlation functions of spin systems coupled to 2-d quantum gravity for $0 < c < 1$

We perform Monte Carlo simulations of 2-d dynamically triangulated surfaces coupled to Ising and three--states Potts model matter. By measuring spin-spin correlation functions as a function of the geodesic distance we provide substantial evidence for a diverging correlation length at $β_c$. The corresponding scaling exponents are directly related to the KPZ exponents of the matter fields as conjectured in [4] (NPB454(1995)313).

Geometrical Interpretation of the KPZ Exponents

We provide evidence that the KPZ exponents in two-dimensional quantum gravity can be interpreted as scaling exponents of correlation functions which are functions of the invariant geodesic distance between the fields.

Alternative actions for quantum gravity and the intrinsic rigidity of the spacetime

Using the Steiner-Weyl expansion formula for parallel manifolds and the so called gonihedric principle we find a large class of discrete integral invariants which are defined on simplicial manifolds of various dimensions. These integral invariants include the discrete version of the Hilbert-Einstein action found by Regge and alternative actions which are linear with respect to the size of the manifold. In addition the concept of generalized deficit angles appear in a natural way and is related to higher order curvature terms. These angles may be used to introduce various aspects of rigidity in simplicial quantum gravity.

Supersymmetric matrix models and branched polymers

We solve a supersymmetric matrix model with a general potential. While matrix models usually describe surfaces, supersymmetry enforces a cancellation of bosonic and fermionic loops and only diagrams corresponding to so-called branched polymers survive. The eigenvalue distribution of the random matrices near the critical point is of a new kind.

We show that the measure of the three dimensional Nambu-Goto string theory has a simple decomposition as a measure on two parameter group of induced area-preserving transformations of the immersed surface and a trivial measure for the area of the surface.
