Measurement of Upsilon production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Upsilon mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Upsilon -> mu+ mu- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the mu+ mu- invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the Upsilon transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the range pT < 15 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The cross-sections times branching fractions, integrated over these kinematic ranges, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S)->mu+ mu-) = 2.29 {\pm} 0.01 {\pm} 0.10 -0.37 +0.19 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.562 {\pm} 0.007 {\pm} 0.023 -0.092 +0.048 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.283 {\pm} 0.005 {\pm} 0.012 -0.048 +0.025 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the unknown polarisation of the three Upsilon states.

Searches for Majorana neutrinos in B- decays

Searches for heavy Majorana neutrinos in B- decays in final states containing hadrons plus a μ- μ- pair have been performed using 0.41/fb of data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The D+ μ- μ- and D*+ μ- μ- final states can arise from the presence of virtual Majorana neutrinos of any mass. Other final states containing π+, Ds+, or D0π+ can be mediated by an on-shell Majorana neutrino. No signals are found and upper limits are set on Majorana neutrino production as a function of mass, and also on the B- decay branching fractions.

Observation of X(3872) production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV

Using 34.7 pb-1 of data collected with the LHCb detector, the inclusive production of the X(3872) meson in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is observed for the first time. Candidates are selected in the X(3872) -> J/psi pi+ pi- decay mode, and used to measure sigma(pp -> X(3872) + anything) B(X(3872)-> J/psi pi+ pi-) = 5.4 +- 1.3 (stat) +- 0.8 (syst) nb, where sigma(pp -> X(3872) + anything) is the inclusive production cross-section of X(3872) mesons with rapidity in the range 2.5-4.5 and transverse momentum in the range 5-20 GeV/c. In addition the masses of both the X(3872) and psi(2S) mesons, reconstructed in the J/psi pi+ pi- final state, are measured to be m(X(3872)) = 3871.95 +- 0.48 (stat) +- 0.12 (syst) MeV/c2 and m(psi(2S)) = 3686.12 +- 0.06 (stat) +- 0.10 (syst) MeV/c2

Measurement of the Ds+ - Ds- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

Heavy quark production in 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC is not necessarily flavour symmetric. The production asymmetry, A_P, between Ds+ and Ds- mesons is studied using the ϕπ(+/-) decay mode in a data sample of 1.0/fb collected with the LHCb detector. The difference between π+ and π- detection efficiencies is determined using the ratios of fully reconstructed to partially reconstructed D*(+/-) decays. The overall production asymmetry in the Ds rapidity region 2.0 to 4.5 with transverse momentum larger than 2 GeV is measured to be A_P=(-0.33 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.10)%. This result can constrain models of heavy flavour production.

Star Formation History in two fields of the Small Magellanic Cloud Bar

The Bar is the most productive region of the Small Magellanic Cloud in terms of star formation but also the least studied one. In this paper we investigate the star formation history of two fields located in the SW and in the NE portion of the Bar using two independent and well tested procedures applied to the color-magnitude diagrams of their stellar populations resolved by means of deep HST photometry. We find that the Bar experienced a negligible star formation activity in the first few Gyr, followed by a dramatic enhancement from 6 to 4 Gyr ago and a nearly constant activity since then. The two examined fields differ both in the rate of star formation and in the ratio of recent over past activity, but share the very low level of initial activity and its sudden increase around 5 Gyr ago. The striking similarity between the timing of the enhancement and the timing of the major episode in the Large Magellanic Cloud is suggestive of a close encounter triggering star formation.

First evidence of direct CP violation in charmless two-body decays of Bs mesons

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.35 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by LHCb in 2011, we report the first evidence of CP violation in the decays of $B^0_s$ mesons to $K^\pm π^\mp$ pairs, $A_{CP}(B^0_s \rightarrow K π)=0.27 \pm 0.08\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{(syst)}$, with a significance of 3.3$σ$. Furthermore, we report the first observation of CP violation in $B^0$ decays at a hadron collider, $A_{CP}(B^0 \rightarrow Kπ)=-0.088 \pm 0.011\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\,\mathrm{(syst)}$, with a significance exceeding 6$σ$.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕs in Bs->J/ψπ+π- decays

Measurement of the mixing-induced CP-violating phase phi_s in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. Here 7421 +/- 105 signal events from the dominantly CP-odd final state J/ψpi+ pi- are selected in 1/fb of pp collision data collected at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. A time-dependent fit to the data yields a value of phi_s=-0.019^{+0.173+0.004}_{-0.174-0.003} rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. No evidence of direct CP violation is found.

First LOFAR observations at very low frequencies of cluster-scale non-thermal emission: the case of Abell 2256

Abell 2256 is one of the best known examples of a galaxy cluster hosting large-scale diffuse radio emission that is unrelated to individual galaxies. It contains both a giant radio halo and a relic, as well as a number of head-tail sources and smaller diffuse steep-spectrum radio sources. The origin of radio halos and relics is still being debated, but over the last years it has become clear that the presence of these radio sources is closely related to galaxy cluster merger events. Here we present the results from the first LOFAR Low band antenna (LBA) observations of Abell 2256 between 18 and 67 MHz. To our knowledge, the image presented in this paper at 63 MHz is the deepest ever obtained at frequencies below 100 MHz in general. Both the radio halo and the giant relic are detected in the image at 63 MHz, and the diffuse radio emission remains visible at frequencies as low as 20 MHz. The observations confirm the presence of a previously claimed ultra-steep spectrum source to the west of the cluster center with a spectral index of -2.3 \pm 0.4 between 63 and 153 MHz. The steep spectrum suggests that this source is an old part of a head-tail radio source in the cluster. For the radio relic we find an integrated spectral index of -0.81 \pm 0.03, after removing the flux contribution from the other sources. This is relatively flat which could indicate that the efficiency of particle acceleration at the shock substantially changed in the last \sim 0.1 Gyr due to an increase of the shock Mach number. In an alternative scenario, particles are re-accelerated by some mechanism in the downstream region of the shock, resulting in the relatively flat integrated radio spectrum. In the radio halo region we find indications of low-frequency spectral steepening which may suggest that relativistic particles are accelerated in a rather inhomogeneous turbulent region.

Hubble Space Telescope Observations of an Outer Field in Omega Centauri: A Definitive Helium Abundance

We revisit the problem of the split main sequence (MS) of the globular cluster omega Centauri, and report the results of two-epoch Hubble Space Telescope observations of an outer field, for which proper motions give us a pure sample of cluster members, and an improved separation of the two branches of the main sequence. Using a new set of stellar models covering a grid of values of helium and metallicity, we find that the best possible estimate of the helium abundance of the bluer branch of the MS is Y = 0.39 +/- 0.02. For the cluster center we apply new techniques to old observations: we use indices of photometric quality to select a high-quality sample of stars, which we also correct for differential reddening. We then superpose the color-magnitude diagram of the outer field on that of the cluster center, and suggest a connection of the bluer branch of the MS with one of the more prominent among the many sequences in the subgiant region. We also report a group of undoubted cluster members that are well to the red of the lower MS.

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay $\boldsymbol{B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-}$

The angular distributions and the partial branching fraction of the decay $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ are studied using an integrated luminosity of $0.37\,fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the LHCb detector. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, $A_{\mathrm{FB}}$, the fraction of longitudinal polarisation, $F_{\mathrm{L}}$, and the partial branching fraction, $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}$, are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The measurements are in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and are the most precise to date. In the dimuon invariant mass squared range $1.00-6.00{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}^2/c^4$, the results are $A_{\mathrm{FB}}=-0.06\,^{+0.13}_{-0.14} \pm 0.04$, $F_{\mathrm{L}}=0.55\pm 0.10\pm 0.03$ and $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}=(0.42 \pm 0.06\pm 0.03) \times 10^{-7}c^4/{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}^2$. In each case, the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Strong constraints on the rare decays Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu-

A search for Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu- decays is performed using 1.0 fb^-1 of pp collision data collected at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. For both decays the number of observed events is consistent with expectation from background and Standard Model signal predictions. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) < 4.5 (3.8) x 10^-9 and BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 1.0 (0.81) x 10^-9 at 95% (90%) confidence level.

First observation of the decay Bc+ to J/psi pi+pi-pi+

The decay Bc+ --> J/psi pi+pi-pi+ is observed for the first time, using 0.8 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of branching fractions BR(Bc+ --> J/psi pi+pi-pi+)/BR(B_c+ --> J/psi pi+) is measured to be 2.41+-0.30+-0.33, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Observation of Bs -> J/ψf'2(1525) in J/ψK+K- final states

The decay Bs -> J/ψK+ K- is investigated using 0.16/fb of data collected with the LHCb detector using 7 TeV pp collisions. Although the J/ψϕ channel is well known, final states at higher K+K- masses have not previously been studied. In the K+K- mass spectrum we observe a significant signal in the f'2(1525) region as well as a non-resonant component. After subtracting the non-resonant component, we find B(Bs->J/ψf'_2(1525))/B(Bs->J/ψϕ)=(26.4 +/- 2.7 +/- 2.4)%.

Measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays

A study of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays is performed with data corresponding to 0.37 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Their branching fractions are found to be B(B+ to J/psi pi+) = (3.88 +- 0.11 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5} and B(B+ to psi(2S) pi+) = (2.52 +- 0.26 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, where the first uncertainty is related to the statistical size of the sample and the second quantifies systematic effects. The measured CP asymmetries in these modes are ACP(J/psi pi) = 0.005 +- 0.027 +- 0.011 and ACP(psi(2S) pi) = 0.048 +- 0.090 +- 0.011 with no evidence of direct CP violation seen.

Evidence for CP violation in time-integrated D0 -> h-h+ decay rates

A search for time-integrated CP violation in D0 -> h-h+ (h=K, pi) decays is presented using 0.62 fb^-1 of data collected by LHCb in 2011. The flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the slow pion in the D*+ -> D0 pi+ and D*- -> D0bar pi- decay chains. The difference in CP asymmetry between D0 -> K-K+ and D0 -> pi-pi+, Delta ACP = ACP(K-K+) - ACP(pi-pi+), is measured to be [-0.82 \pm 0.21(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.)]%. This differs from the hypothesis of CP conservation by 3.5 standard deviations.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase phi_s in the decay Bs->J/psi phi

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, using data collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The decay time distribution of B_s -> J/psi phi is characterized by the decay widths Gamma_H and Gamma_L of the heavy and light mass eigenstates of the B_s-B_s-bar system and by a CP-violating phase phi_s. In a sample of about 8500 B_s -> J/psi phi events isolated from 0.37 fb^-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV we measure phi_s = 0.15 +/- 0.18 (stat) +/- 0.06 (syst) rad. We also find an average B_s decay width Gamma_s == (Gamma_L + Gamma_H)/2 = 0.657 +/- 0.009 (stat) +/- 0.008 (syst) ps^-1 and a decay width difference Delta Gamma_s == Gamma_L - Gamma_H} = 0.123 +/- 0.029 (stat) +/- 0.011 (syst) ps^-1. Our measurement is insensitive to the transformation (phi_s,DeltaGamma_s --> pi - phi_s, - Delta Gamma_s.

Measurement of the B^0_s - \bar{B}^0_s oscillation frequency Delta m_s in B^0_s -> D_s^-(3) pi decays

The B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s oscillation frequency Delta m_s is measured with 36 pb^{-1} of data collected in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A total of 1381 B^0_s -> D_s^- π^+ and \B^0_s -> D_s^- pi^+ pi^- pi^+ signal decays are reconstructed, with average decay time resolutions of 44 fs and 36 fs, respectively. An oscillation signal with a statistical significance of 4.6 sigma is observed. The measured oscillation frequency is Delta m_s = 17.63 \pm 0.11 (stat) \pm 0.02 (syst) ps^{-1}.
