Scaling Behavior of Quasi-One-Dimensional Vortex Avalanches in Superconducting Films

Scaling behaviour of dynamically driven vortex avalanches in superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ films deposited on tilted crystalline substrates has been observed using quantitative magneto-optical imaging. Two films with different tilt angles are characterized by the probability distributions of avalanche size in terms of the number of moving vortices. It is found in both samples that these distributions follow power-laws over up to three decades, and have exponents ranging between 1.0 and 1.4. The distributions also show clear finite-size scaling, when the system size is defined by the depth of the flux penetration front -- a signature of self-organized criticality. A scaling relation between the avalanche size exponent and the fractal dimension, previously derived theoretically from conservation of the number of magnetic vortices in the stationary state and shown in numerical simulations, is here shown to be satisfied also experimentally.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into four taus at LEP2

A search for the production and non-standard decay of a Higgs boson, h, into four taus through intermediate pseudoscalars, a, is conducted on 683 pb-1 of data collected by the ALEPH experiment at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. No excess of events above background is observed, and exclusion limits are placed on the combined production cross section times branching ratio, ξ^2 = σ(e+e- --> Zh)/σ_{SM}(e+e- --> Zh) x B(h --> aa)x B(a --> τ^+τ^-)^2. For mh < 107 GeV/c2 and 4 < ma < 10 GeV/c2, ξ^2 > 1 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Discovery potential of R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector

The production of exotic heavy hadronic particles arise in several models for physics beyond the Standard Model. A study of the detection possibilities of new heavy hadron states with the ATLAS detector is presented. The focus is on R-hadrons, which are stable hadronized gluinos, predicted by certain supersymmetric models. Interactions and signatures of single R-hadrons are studied with the ATLAS simulation and reconstruction framework and issues concerning triggering on R-hadron events are addressed. The ATLAS fast simulation framework has been extended to include parameterizations for R-hadrons. Based on topological and kinematic variables only, the discovery potential of the ATLAS detector for R-hadron events produced in pp->g~g~, is studied for masses below 2 TeV/c^2. R-hadrons with masses as predicted by standard SUSY scenarios would be discovered already in the very early stages of the running of the LHC. The discovery reach of heavy gluinos, predicted by for example split supersymmetry models, extends up to at least 1.8 \tevcc for three years running of the LHC at low luminosity.

An improved 2.5 GHz electron pump: single-electron transport through shallow-etched point contacts driven by surface acoustic waves

We present an experimental study of a 2.5 GHz electron pump based on the quantized acoustoelectric current driven by surface acoustic waves (SAWs) through a shallow-etched point contact in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. At low temperatures and with an additional counter-propagating SAW beam, up to n = 20 current plateaus at I=nef could be resolved, where n is an integer, e the electron charge, and f the SAW frequency. In the best case the accuracy of the first plateau at 0.40 nA was estimated to be dI/I = +/- 25 ppm over 0.25 mV in gate voltage, which is better than previous results.

Four-Fermion Production in Electron-Positron Collisions

This report summarises the results of the four-fermion working group of the LEP2-MC workshop, held at CERN from 1999 to 2000. Recent developments in the calculation of four-fermion processes in electron-positron collisions at LEP-2 centre-of-mass energies are presented, concentrating on predictions for four main reactions: W-pair production, visible photons in four-fermion events, single-W production and Z-pair production. Based on a comparison of results derived within different approaches, theoretical uncertainties on these predictions are established.

Triple Gauge Boson Couplings

We present the results obtained by the "Triple Gauge Couplings" working group during the LEP2 Workshop (1994-1995). The report concentrates on the measurement of $WWγ$ and $WWZ$ couplings in $e^-e^+\to W^-W^+$ or, more generally, four-fermion production at LEP2. In addition the detection of new interactions in the bosonic sector via other production channels is discussed.
