Magnetic and structural properties of the intermetallic Ce(1-x)LaxCrGe3 series of compounds

The Ce(1-x)LaxCrGe3 (x = 0, 0.19, 0.43, 0.58 and 1) intermetallic compound system has been investigated by magnetization measurements and neutron scattering techniques to determine the effect of La-doping on the magnetic ordering and exchange interaction between Cr ions. The structural and magnetic characterization in this series was first verified by X-ray diffraction and bulk magnetization measurements. The samples exhibit the known hexagonal perovskite structure (P63/mmc space group) and have a single magnetic phase according to magnetization measurements. In this work, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature for Cr evolves smoothly from a range of 68 K to 77 K for CeCrGe3 to a range of 91 K to 96 K for LaCrGe3 as La replaces Ce. Magnetization results indicate the formation of domain walls below the transition temperature for all the Ce(1-x)LaxCrGe3 systems investigated. Neutron results indicate ordered magnetic Cr moments aligned along the c axis for the x = 1 LaCrGe3 system, as well as for x = 0.19, 0.43, and 0.58, which contrasts with the x = 0 CeCrGe3 where the moments order in the ab plane.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Diagram of CrAs and its Relationship with Pressure-induced Superconductivity

Most unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors, are derived from chemical doping or application of pressure on their collinearly magnetic-ordered parent compounds[1-5]. The recently discovered pressure-induced superconductor CrAs, as a rare example of a non-collinear helimagnetic superconductor, has therefore generated great interest in understanding microscopic magnetic properties and their interplay with superconductivity [6-8]. Unlike cuprates and iron based superconductors where the magnetic moment direction barely changes upon doping, here we show that CrAs exhibits a spin reorientation from the ab plane to the ac plane, along with an abrupt drop of the magnetic propagation vector at a critical pressure (Pc~0.6 GPa). This magnetic phase transition coincides with the emergence of bulk superconductivity, indicating a direct connection between magnetism and superconductivity. With further increasing pressure, the magnetic order completely disappears near the optimal Tc regime (P~0.94 GPa). Moreover, the Cr magnetic moments between nearest neighbors tend to be aligned antiparallel with increasing pressure toward the optimal superconductivity regime. Our findings suggest that the non-collinear helimagnetic order is strongly coupled to structural and electronic degrees of freedom, and that antiferromagnetic correlations associated with the low magnetic vector phase are crucial for superconductivity.

Neutron scattering study of a quasi-2D spin-1/2 dimer system Piperazinium Hexachlorodicuprate under hydrostatic pressure

We report inelastic neutron scattering study of a quasi-two-dimensional S=1/2 dimer system Piperazinium Hexachlorodicuprate under hydrostatic pressure. The spin gap Δ becomes softened with the increase of the hydrostatic pressure up to P= 9.0 kbar. The observed threefold degenerate triplet excitation at P= 6.0 kbar is consistent with the theoretical prediction and the bandwidth of the dispersion relation is unaffected within the experimental uncertainty. At P= 9.0 kbar the spin gap is reduced to 0.55 meV from 1.0 meV at ambient pressure.

Neutron scattering Measurements of the phonon density of states of FeSe$_{1-x}$ superconductors

Inelastic neutron-scattering experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline samples of the FeSe$_{1-x}$ superconductors. We report the phonon density of states for FeSe$_{1-x}$ with Tc$\approx$8 K. The phonon cutoff frequency is observed around 40 meV. No significant change is observed across the superconducting transition. The measurements support the published first-principles calculations [A. Subedi et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{78}, 134514 (2008)].

Lattice collapse and quenching of magnetism in CaFe2As2 under pressure: A single crystal neutron and x-ray diffraction investigation

Single crystal neutron and high-energy x-ray diffraction have identified the phase lines corresponding to transitions between the ambient-pressure tetragonal (T), the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic (O) and the non-magnetic collapsed tetragonal (cT) phases of CaFe2As2. We find no evidence of additional structures for pressures up to 2.5 GPa (at 300 K). Both the T-cT and O-cT transitions exhibit significant hysteresis effects and we demonstrate that coexistence of the O and cT phases can occur if a non-hydrostatic component of pressure is present. Measurements of the magnetic diffraction peaks show no change in the magnetic structure or ordered moment as a function of pressure in the O phase and we find no evidence of magnetic ordering in the cT phase. Band structure calculations show that the transition results in a strong decrease of the iron 3d density of states at the Fermi energy, consistent with a loss of the magnetic moment.

Effect of pressure on the quantum spin ladder material IPA-CuCl3

Inelastic neutron scattering and bulk magnetic susceptibility studies of the quantum S=1/2 spin ladder system IPA-CuCl3 are performed under hydrostatic pressure. The pressure dependence of the spin gap $Δ$ is determined. At $P=1.5$ GPa it is reduced to $Δ=0.79$ meV from $Δ=1.17$ meV at ambient pressure. The results allow us to predict a soft-mode quantum phase transition in this system at P$_\mathrm{c}\sim 4$ GPa. The measurements are complicated by a proximity of a structural phase transition that leads to a deterioration of the sample.
