Constraining scalar field properties with boson stars as black hole mimickers

Constraints to the mass of a scalar field and the strength of its self-interacting coupling constant are obtained. This was done using observations of stellar dynamics at the center of our galaxy and by assuming that the dark compact object responsible of such dynamics is a boson star and not a supermassive black hole. We show that if such scalar field represents a spin-zero particle with cross section high enough to be considered collisional dark matter, there is a region of parameters compatible with both conditions: that the scalar field play the role of collisional dark matter and that it can form objects with the mass and compactness compatible with stellar kinematics.

Self-gravitating system made of axions

We show that the inclusion of an axion-like effective potential in the construction of a self-gravitating system made of scalar fields leads to a decrease on its compactness when the value of the self-interaction coupling constant is increased. By including the current values for the axion mass m and decay constant f_a, we have computed the mass and the radius for self-gravitating systems made of axion particles. It is found that such objects will have asteroid-size masses and radius of few meters, then, the self-gravitating system made of axions could play the role of scalar mini-machos that are mimicking a cold dark matter model for the galactic halo.

Universal Mass Texture, CP violation and Quark-Lepton Complementarity

The measurements of the neutrino and quark mixing angles satisfy the empirical relations called Quark-Lepton Complementarity. These empirical relations suggest the existence of a correlation between the mixing matrices of leptons and quarks. In this work, we examine the possibility that this correlation between the mixing angles of quarks and leptons originates in the similar hierarchy of quarks and charged lepton masses and the seesaw mechanism type~I, that gives mass to the Majorana neutrinos. We assume that the similar mass hierarchies of charged lepton and quark masses allows us to represent all the mass matrices of Dirac fermions in terms of a universal form with four texture zeroes.

Neutrino phenomenology and unparticle physics

We show how neutrino data can be used in order to constrain the free parameters of possible extensions to the standard model of elementary particles (SM). For definiteness, we focus in the recently proposed unparticle scenario. We show that neutrino data, in particular the MUNU experiment, can set stronger bounds than previous reported limits in the scale dimension parameter for certain region (d > 1.5). We compute the sensitivity of future neutrino experiments to unparticle physics such as future neutrino-electron scattering detectors, coherent neutrino-nuclei scattering as well as the ILC . In particular, we show that the measurement of coherent reactor neutrino scattering off nuclei provide a good sensitivity to the couplings of unparticle interaction with neutrinos and quarks. Finally our results are compared with the current astrophysical limits.

Unparticle physics and neutrino phenomenology

We have constrained unparticle interactions with neutrinos and electrons using available data on neutrino-electron elastic scattering and the four CERN LEP experiments data on mono photon production. We have found that, for neutrino-electron elastic scattering, the MUNU experiment gives better constraints than previous reported limits in the region d>1.5. The results are compared with the current astrophysical limits, pointing out the cases where these limits may or may not apply. We also discuss the sensitivity of future experiments to unparticle physics. In particular, we show that the measurement of coherent reactor neutrino scattering off nuclei could provide a good sensitivity to the couplings of unparticle interaction with neutrinos and quarks. We also discuss the case of future neutrino-electron experiments as well as the International Linear Collider.

Probing nonstandard interactions with reactor neutrinos

New limits on the weak mixing angle and on the electron neutrino effective charge radius in the low energy regime, below 100 MeV, are obtained from a combined fit of all electron-(anti)neutrino electron elastic scattering measurements. We have included the recent TEXONO measurement with a CsI (Tl) detector. Only statistical error of this measurement has been taken into account. Weak mixing angle is found to be sin^2 theta_W = 0.255 +0.022 -0.023. The electron neutrino effective charge radius squared is bounded to be r^2 = (0.9 +0.9 -1.0) x 10^{-32} cm^2. The sensitivity of future low energy neutrino experiments to nonstandard interactions of neutrinos with quarks is also discussed.

Coherent nu-N scattering and the search for physics beyond the standard model

We focus in future proposals to measure coherent neutrino-nuclei scattering and we show that such kind of experiments are very sensitive to nonstandard neutrino interactions with quarks. First in a model independent parametrization and then we focused in particular models such as leptoquarks and models with extra neutral gauge bosons and with R-parity breaking interactions. We show that in all these three different types of new physics it is possible to obtain competitive bounds to those of future collider experiments. For the particular case of leptoquarks we found that the expected sensitivity to the coupling and mass for most of the future experimental setups is quite better than the current constraints.

Towards a realistic axion star

In this work we estimate the radius and the mass of a self-gravitating system made of axions. The quantum axion field satisfies the Klein-Gordon equation in a curved space-time and the metric components of this space-time are solutions to the Einstein equations with a source term given by the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum operator constructed from the axion field. As a first step towards an axion star we consider the up to the sixth term in the axion potential expansion. We found that axion stars would have masses of the order of asteroids and radius of the order of few centimeters.

Constraining Nonstandard Neutrino-Electron Interactions

We present a detailed analysis on nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) with electrons including all muon and electron (anti)-neutrino data from existing accelerators and reactors, in conjunction with the ``neutrino counting'' data (e- e+ -> nu nu gamma) from the four LEP collaborations. First we perform a one-parameter-at-a-time analysis, showing how most constraints improve with respect to previous results reported in the literature. We also present more robust results where the NSI parameters are allowed to vary freely in the analysis. We show the importance of combining LEP data with the other experiments in removing degeneracies in the global analysis constraining flavor-conserving NSI parameters which, at 90 % and 95 % C.L., must lie within unique allowed regions. Despite such improved constraints, there is still substantial room for improvement, posing a big challenge for upcoming experiments.

Improved limit on electron neutrino charge radius through a new evaluation of the weak mixing angle

We have obtained a new limit on the electron neutrino effective charge radius from a new evaluation of the weak mixing angle by a combined fit of all electron-(anti)neutrino electron elastic scattering measurements. Weak mixing angle is found to be sin^2 theta_W=0.259 \pm 0.025 in the low energy regime below 100 MeV. The electron neutrino charge radius squared is bounded to be in the range -0.13 10^-32 cm^2 < r^2 < 3.32 10^-32 cm^2 at 90 % C.L. Both results improve previously published analyses. We also discuss perspectives of future experiments to improve these constraints.

Sensitivity of low energy neutrino experiments to physics beyond the standard model

We study the sensitivity of future low energy neutrino experiments to extra neutral gauge bosons, leptoquarks and R-parity breaking interactions. We focus on future proposals to measure coherent neutrino-nuclei scattering and neutrino-electron elastic scattering. We introduce a new comparative analysis between these experiments and show that in different types of new physics it is possible to obtain competitive bounds to those of present and future collider experiments. For the cases of leptoquarks and R-parity breaking interactions we found that the expected sensitivity for most of the future low energy experimental setups is better than the current constraints.

A Search for Transiting Hot Planets as Small as Neptune in the Open Cluster M37

We are conducting a transit survey of the open cluster M37 using the Megacam instrument on the 6.5 m Multiple-Mirror Telescope. We have obtained ~4500 images of this cluster over 18.5 nights and have achieved the precision necessary to detect planets smaller than Saturn. In this presentation we provide an overview of the project, describe the ongoing data reduction/analysis and present some of our preliminary results.

Constraining non-standard interactions in nu_e e or bar{nu}_e e scattering

We present a new analysis of non-universal and flavor changing non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) in ν_e e or \barν_e e scattering. Our global analysis of these process includes all relevant experiments, such as the most recent MUNU measurement from reactor neutrinos, both in the context of the Standard Model as well as extensions where NSI are present. We also compare our constraints on non-universal and flavor changing NSI with results from previous analyses. We stress the importance of combining neutrino and anti-neutrino data in the resulting constraints on electroweak paramaters, and the important role that future low energy solar neutrino experiments can play in improving existing sensitivities.

Probing new physics with coherent neutrino scattering off nuclei

The possibility off measuring for the first time neutrino-nuclei coherent scattering has been recently discussed by several experimental collaborations. It is shown that such a measurement may be very sensitive to non-standard interactions of neutrinos with quarks and might set better constraints than those coming from future neutrino factory experiments. We also comment on other types of new physics tests, such as extra heavy neutral gauge bosons, where the sensitivity to some models is slightly better than the Tevatron constraint and, therefore, could give complementary bounds.
