EURONU WP6 2009 yearly report: Update of the physics potential of Nufact, superbeams and betabeams

Many studies in the last ten years have shown that we can measure the unknown angle theta13, discover leptonic CP violation and determine the neutrino hierarchy in more precise neutrino oscillation experiments, searching for the subleading channel nue -> numu in the atmospheric range. In this first report of WP6 activities the following new results are reviewed: (1) Re-evaluation of the physics reach of the upcoming generation of experiments to measure theta13 and delta; (2) New tools to explore a larger parameter space as needed beyond the standard scenario; (3) Neutrino Factory: (a) evaluation of the physics reach of a Nufact regards sterile neutrinos; (b) evaluation of the physics reach of a Nufact as regards non-standard interactions; (c) evaluation of the physics reach of a Nufact as regards violation of unitarity; (d) critical assessment on long baseline tau-detection at Nufact; (e) new physics searches at a near detector in a Nufact; (4) Beta-beams: (a) choice of ions and location for a gamma = 100 CERN-based beta-beam; (b) re-evaluation of atmospheric neutrino background for the gamma = 100 beta-beam scenario; (c) study of a two baseline beta-beam; (d) measuring absolute neutrino mass with beta-beams; (e) progress on monochromatic beta-beams; (5) Update of the physics potential of the SPL super-beam. Eventually, we present an updated comparison of the sensitivity to theta13, delta and the neutrino mass hierarchy of several of the different proposed facilities.

A combined beta-beam and electron capture neutrino experiment

The next generation of long baseline neutrino experiments will aim at determining the value of the unknown mixing angle, theta_{13}, the type of neutrino mass hierarchy and the presence of CP-violation in the lepton sector. Beta-beams and electron capture experiments have been studied as viable candidates for long baseline experiments. They use a very clean electron neutrino beam from the beta-decays or electron capture decays of boosted ions. In the present article we consider an hybrid setup which combines a beta-beam with an electron capture beam by using boosted Ytterbium ions. We study the sensitivity to the CP-violating phase delta and the theta_{13} angle, the CP-discovery potential and the reach to determine the type of neutrino mass hierarchy for this type of long baseline experiment. The analysis is performed for different neutrino beam energies and baselines. Finally, we also discuss how the results would change if a better knowledge of some of the assumed parameters was achieved by the time this experiment could take place.

Tau spin correlations and the anomalous magnetic moment

We show that the precise determination of the Tau magnetic properties is possible in the next generation accelerators, specially at B/Flavour factories. We define spin correlation observables suitable to extract the real part of the magnetic form factor that, for the first time, will allow to test the standard model-QED predictions. In particular, the predicted QED-dependence with both the momentum transfer and the lepton mass can be precisely measured. Until now, the most stringent bounds on the $τ$ magnetic moment $a_τ$ come from LEP data with strong assumptions on the physics involved on the observed process. In this paper, we find three different combinations of spin correlations of the outgoing Taus that disentangle the magnetic moment form factor of the Tau lepton in the electromagnetic vertex. These combinations of asymmetries also get rid off the contributions coming from Z-mediating amplitudes to the defined correlations. Using unpolarized electron beams and an integrated luminosity of $15 \times 10^{18} b^{-1}$, the sensitivity to the $τ$ magnetic moment form factor is of the order $10^{-6}$. This sensitivity is two orders of magnitude better than the present existing high- or low-energy bounds on the magnetic moment and would allow its actual measurement with the precision of a few per cent.

Alignment of the Pixel and SCT Modules for the 2004 ATLAS Combined Test Beam

A small set of final prototypes of the ATLAS Inner Detector silicon tracker (Pixel and SCT) were used to take data during the 2004 Combined Test Beam. Data were collected from runs with beams of different flavour (electrons, pions, muons and photons) with a momentum range of 2 to 180 GeV/c. Four independent methods were used to align the silicon modules. The corrections obtained were validated using the known momenta of the beam particles and were shown to yield consistent results among the different alignment approaches. From the residual distributions, it is concluded that the precision attained in the alignment of the silicon modules is of the order of 5 micrometers in their most precise coordinate.

CP violation and the H-A lineshape

In two-Higgs doublet models (and particularly in the MSSM) the CP-even (H) and CP-odd (A) neutral scalars are nearly degenerate in mass, and their s-channel production would lead to nearly overlapping resonances. CP-violating effects may connect these two Higgs bosons, giving origin to one-loop particle mixing, which, due to their mass proximity, can be resonantly enhanced, altering their lineshape significantly. We show that, in general, the effect of such a CP-violating mixing cannot be mimicked by (or be re-absorbed into) a simple redefinition of the H and A masses in the context of a CP-conserving model. Specifically, the effects of the CP-mixing are such that, either the mass-splitting of the H and A bosons lies outside the range allowed by the theory in the absence of CP-mixing, and/or the detailed energy dependence of the produced lineshape is clearly different from the one obtained by redefining the masses, but not allowing any mixing.

This paper discusses the assembly and the quality control tests of forward detector modules for the ATLAS silicon microstrip detector assembled at the Instituto de Fisica Corpuscular (IFIC) in Valencia. The construction and testing procedures are outlined and the laboratory equipment is briefly described. Emphasis is given on the module quality achieved in terms of mechanical and electrical stability.

Tau anomalous magnetic moment form factor at Super B/Flavor factories

The proposed high-luminosity B/Flavor factories offer new opportunities for the improved determination of the fundamental physical parameters of standard heavy leptons. Compared to the electron or the muon case, the magnetic properties of the $τ$ lepton are largely unexplored. We show that the electromagnetic properties of the $τ$, and in particular its magnetic form factor, may be measured competitively in these facilities, using unpolarized or polarized electron beams. Various observables of the $τ$'s produced on top of the $Υ$ resonances, such as cross-section and normal polarization for unpolarized electrons or longitudinal and transverse asymmetries for polarized beams, can be combined in order to increase the sensitivity on the magnetic moment form factor. In the case of polarized electrons, we identify a special combination of transverse and longitudinal $τ$ polarizations able to disentangle this anomalous magnetic form factor from both the charge form factor and the interference with the Z-mediating amplitude. For an integrated luminosity of $15 \times 10^{18} b^{-1}$ one could achieve a sensitivity of about $10^{-6}$, which is several orders of magnitude below any other existing high- or low-energy bound on the magnetic moment. Thus one may obtain a QED test of this fundamental quantity to a few % precision.

$Δt$-dependent equal-sign dilepton asymmetry and CPTV effects in the symmetry of the $B^0$--$\bar B^0$ entangled state

In this paper we discuss experimental consequences of a novel kind of CPT violation which would manifest itself in the symmetry of the entangled initial state of $B ^0$ and $\bar B ^0$ through their loss of indistinguishability. The ``wrong'' symmetry component is proportional to $ω$. We focus our theoretical study on the $Δt$-dependence of observables concerning equal-sign dilepton events for which the intensity vanishes at $Δt = 0$ in absence of $ω$. We find that the charge asymmetry, $A_{sl}$, acquires a $Δt$-dependence linear in $ω$, whose relative importance appears on specific regions of time still unexplored. We also do a statistical analysis for the measurements here proposed and find a high sensitivity to this new CPT-violating effect in this charge asymmetry. We obtain the first limits on the $ω$-effect by re-analyzing existing data on the $A_{sl}$ asymmetry.

CP violation through particle mixing and the H-A lineshape

We consider the possibility of looking for CP-mixing effects in two-Higgs doublet models (and particularly in the MSSM) by studying the lineshape of the CP-even (H) and CP-odd (A) neutral scalars. In most cases H and A come quite degenerate in mass, and their s-channel production would lead to nearly overlapping resonances. CP-violating effects may connect these two Higgs bosons, giving origin to one-loop particle mixing, which, due to their mass proximity, can be resonantly enhanced. The corresponding transition amplitude contains then CP-even and CP-odd components; besides the signal of intereference between both amplitudes, leading to a CP-odd asymmetry, we propose to look for the mixing probability itself, a quantity which, although CP-even, can originate only from a CP-odd amplitude. We show that, in general, the effect of such a mixing probability cannot be mimicked by (or be re-absorbed into) a simple redefinition of the H and A masses in the context of a CP-conserving model. Specifically, the effects of the CP-mixing are such that, either the mass-splitting of the H and A bosons cannot be accounted for in the absence of CP-mixing, and/or the detailed energy dependence of the produced lineshape is clearly different from the one obtained by redefining the masses, but not allowing any mixing. This analysis suggests that the detailed study of the lineshape of this Higgs system may provide valuable information on the CP nature of the underlying theory.

Decoherence induced CPT violation and entangled neutral mesons

We discuss two classes of semi-microscopic theoretical models of stochastic space-time foam in quantum gravity and the associated effects on entangled states of neutral mesons, signalling an intrinsic breakdown of CPT invariance. One class of models deals with a specific model of foam, initially constructed in the context of non-critical (Liouville) string theory, but viewed here in the more general context of effective quantum-gravity models. The relevant Hamiltonian perturbation, describing the interaction of the meson with the foam medium, consists of off-diagonal stochastic metric fluctuations, connecting distinct mass eigenstates (or the appropriate generalisation thereof in the case of K-mesons), and it is proportional to the relevant momentum transfer (along the direction of motion of the meson pair). There are two kinds of CPT-violating effects in this case, which can be experimentally disentangled: one (termed ``omega-effect'') is associated with the failure of the indistinguishability between the neutral meson and its antiparticle, and affects certain symmetry properties of the initial state of the two-meson system; the second effect is generated by the time evolution of the system in the medium of the space-time foam, and can result in time-dependent contributions of the $omega-effect type in the time profile of the two meson state. Estimates of both effects are given, which show that, at least in certain models, such effects are not far from the sensitivity of experimental facilities available currently or in the near future. The other class of quantum gravity models involves a medium of gravitational fluctuations which behaves like a ``thermal bath''. In this model both of the above-mentioned intrinsic CPT violation effects are not valid.

Intrinsic CPT violation and decoherence for entangled neutral mesons

We present a combined treatment of quantum-gravity-induced effects and intrinsic CPT violation in entangled neutral-Kaon states. Our analysis takes into consideration two types of effects: first, those associated with the loss of particle-antiparticle identity, as a result of the ill-defined nature of the CPT operator, and second, effects due to the non-unitary evolution of the Kaons in the space-time foam. By studying a variety of phi-factory observables, involving identical as well as general final states, we derive analytical expressions, to leading order in the associated CPT violating parameters, for double-decay rates and their time-integrated counterparts. Our analysis shows that the various types of the aforementioned effects may be disentangled through judicious combinations of appropriate observables in a phi factory.

Physics Reach with a Monochromatic Neutrino Beam from Electron Capture

Neutrino oscillation experiments from different sources have demonstrated non-vanishing neutrino masses and flavour mixings. The next experiments have to address the determination of the connecting mixing U(e3) and the existence of the CP violating phase. Whereas U(e3) measures the strength of the oscillation probability in appearance experiments, the CP phase acts as a phase-shift in the interference pattern. Here we propose to separate these two parameters by energy dependence, using the novel idea of a monochromatic neutrino beam facility based on the acceleration of ions that decay fast through electron capture. Fine tuning of the boosted neutrino energy allows precision measurements able to open a window for the discovery of CP violation, even for a mixing as small as 1 degree.

Perspectives in Neutrino Physics: Monochromatic Neutrino Beams

In the last few years spectacular results have been achieved with the demonstration of non vanishing neutrino masses and flavour mixing. The ultimate goal is the understanding of the origin of these properties from new physics. In this road, the last unknown mixing $[U_{e3}]$ must be determined. If it is proved to be non-zero, the possibility is open for Charge Conjugation-Parity (CP) violation in the lepton sector. This will require precision experiments with a very intense neutrino source. Here a novel method to create a monochromatic neutrino beam, an old dream for neutrino physics, is proposed based on the recent discovery of nuclei that decay fast through electron capture. Such nuclei will generate a monochromatic directional neutrino beam when decaying at high energy in a storage ring with long straight sections. We also show that the capacity of such a facility to discover new physics is impressive, so that fine tuning of the boosted neutrino energy allows precision measurements of the oscillation parameters even for a $[U_{e3}]$ mixing as small as 1 degree. We can thus open a window to the discovery of CP violation in neutrino oscillations.

Physics Reach of Electron-Capture Neutrino Beams

To complete the picture of neutrino oscillations two fundamental parameters need to be measured, theta13 and delta. The next generation of long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments -superbeams, betabeams and neutrino factories- indeed take aim at measuring them. Here we explore the physics reach of a new candidate: an electron-capture neutrino beam. Emphasis is made on its feasibility thanks to the recent discovery of nuclei that decay fast through electron capture, and on the interplay with a betabeam (its closest relative).

Dynamical Zero in Antineutrino_e -- Electron Scattering and the Neutrino Magnetic Moment

The Standard Model differential cross section for $\barν_e-e^-$ elastic scattering vanishes exactly, at lowest order, for forward electrons and incident $\barν_e$ energy close to the rest energy of the electron. This dynamical zero is not induced by a fundamental symmetry of the Lagrangian but by a destructive interference between the left- and right-handed chiral couplings of the electron in the charged and neutral current amplitudes. We show that lowest order analyses based on this favorable kinematic configuration are only mildly affected by the inclusion of the $O(α)$ radiative corrections in the $\barν_e-e^-$ differential cross section, thus providing an excellent opportunity for the search of ``new physics''. In the light of these results, we discuss possible methods to improve the upper limits on the neutrino magnetic moment by selecting recoil electrons contained in a forward narrow cone. We conclude that, in spite of the obvious loss in statistics, one may have a better signal for small angular cones.

CPT violation in entangled B0-B0bar states and the demise of flavour tagging

We discuss the demise of flavour tagging due to the loss of the particle-antiparticle identity of neutral B-mesons in the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlated states. Such a situation occurs in cases where the CPT operator is ill-defined, as happens, for example, in quantum gravity models with induced decoherence in the matter sector. The time evolution of the perturbed B0-B0bar initial state, as produced in B-factories, is sufficient to generate new two-body states. For flavour specific decays at equal times, we discuss two definite tests of the two body entanglement: (i) search for the would-be forbidden B0 B0 and B0bar B0bar states; (ii) deviations from the indistinguishable probability between the permuted states B0bar B0 and B0 B0bar.
