Experimental study of ultracold neutron production in pressurized superfluid helium

We have investigated experimentally the pressure dependence of the production of ultracold neutrons (UCN) in superfluid helium in the range from saturated vapor pressure to 20bar. A neutron velocity selector allowed the separation of underlying single-phonon and multiphonon pro- cesses by varying the incident cold neutron (CN) wavelength in the range from 3.5 to 10Å. The predicted pressure dependence of UCN production derived from inelastic neutron scattering data was confirmed for the single-phonon excitation. For multiphonon based UCN production we found no significant dependence on pressure whereas calculations from inelastic neutron scattering data predict an increase of 43(6)% at 20bar relative to saturated vapor pressure. From our data we conclude that applying pressure to superfluid helium does not increase the overall UCN production rate at a typical CN guide.

New excitations in bcc $^{4}$He - an inelastic neutron scattering study

We report neutron scattering measurements on bcc solid $^{4}$% He. We studied the phonon branches and the recently discovered ''optic-like'' branch along the main crystalline directions. In addition, we discovered another, dispersionless "optic-like'' branch at an energy around 1 meV ($\sim$~11K). The properties of the two "optic-like" branches seem different. Since one expects only 3 acoustic phonon branches in a monoatomic cubic crystal, these new branches must represent different type of excitations. One possible interpretation involves localized excitations unique to a quantum solid.

Observation of Macroscopic Structural Fluctuations in bcc Solid 4He

We report neutron diffraction studies of low density bcc and hcp solid 4He. In the bcc phase, we observed a continuous dynamical behaviour involving macroscopic structural changes of the solid. The dynamical behaviour takes place in a cell full of solid, and therefore represents a solidsolid transformation. The structural changes are consistent with a gradual rotation of macroscopic grains separated by low angle grain boundaries. We suggest that these changes are triggered by random momentary vibrations of the experimental system. An analysis of Laue diffraction patterns indicates that in some cases these structural changes, once initiated by a momentary impulse, seem to proceed at a constant rate over times approaching an hour. The energy associated with these macroscopic changes appears to be on the order of kT. Under similar conditions (temperature and pressure), these effects were absent in the hcp phase.

Observation of a new excitation in bcc solid 4He by inelastic neutron scattering

We report neutron scattering measurements of the phonons in bcc solid 4He. In general, only 3 accoustic phonon branches should exist in a monoatomic cubic crystal. In addition to these phonon branches, we found a new ''optic-like'' mode along the [110] direction. One possible interpretation of this new mode is in terms of localized excitations unique to a quantum solid.

Magnetic resonance peak and nonmagnetic impurities

Nonmagnetic Zn impurities are known to strongly suppress superconductivity. We review their effects on the spin excitation spectrum in $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7}$, as investigated by inelastic neutron scattering measurements.

The Spin Excitation Spectrum in Superconducting ${\bf YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.85}}$

A comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of magnetic excitations in the near-optimally doped high-temperature superconductor ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.85}}$ is presented. The spin correlations in the normal state are commensurate with the crystal lattice, and the intensity is peaked around the wave vector characterizing the antiferromagnetic state of the insulating precursor ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6}}$. Profound modifications of the spin excitation spectrum appear abruptly below the superconducting transition temperature, $\rm T_C$, where a commensurate resonant mode and a set of weaker incommensurate peaks develop. The data are consistent with models based on an underlying two-dimensional Fermi surface that predict a continuous, downward dispersion relation connecting the resonant mode and the incommensurate excitations. The magnetic incommensurability in the ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$ system is thus not simply related to that of another high temperature superconductor, ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4}}$, where incommensurate peaks persist well above $\rm T_C$. The temperature dependent incommensurability is difficult to reconcile with interpretations based on charge stripe formation in ${\rm YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+x}}$ near optimum doping.

Spin Susceptibility in Underdoped $\bf YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

We report a comprehensive polarized and unpolarized neutron scattering study of the evolution of the dynamical spin susceptibility with temperature and doping in three underdoped single crystals of the \YBCO{6+x} high temperature superconductor: \YBCO{6.5} (Tc = 52 K), \YBCO{6.7} (Tc = 67 K), and \YBCO{6.85} (T_c = 87 K). Theoretical implications of these data are discussed, and a critique of recent attempts to relate the spin excitations to the thermodynamics of high temperature superconductors is given.

Quantum Impurities and the Neutron Resonance Peak in ${\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7}$: Ni versus Zn

The influence of magnetic (S=1) and nonmagnetic (S=0) impurities on the spin dynamics of an optimally doped high temperature superconductor is compared in two samples with almost identical superconducting transition temperatures: YBa$_2$(Cu$_{0.97}$Ni$_{0.03}$)$_3$O$_7$ (T$_c$=80 K) and YBa$_2$(Cu$_{0.99}$Zn$_{0.01}$)$_3$O$_7$ (T$_c$=78 K). In the Ni-substituted system, the magnetic resonance peak (which is observed at E$_r \simeq$40 meV in the pure system) shifts to lower energy with a preserved E$_r$/T$_c$ ratio while the shift is much smaller upon Zn substitution. By contrast Zn, but not Ni, restores significant spin fluctuations around 40 meV in the normal state. These observations are discussed in the light of models proposed for the magnetic resonance peak.

Spin dynamics in high-$T_C$ superconductors

Key features of antiferromagnetic dynamical correlations in high-$T_C$ superconductors cuprates are discussed. In underdoped regime, the sharp resonance peak, occuring exclusively in the SC state, is accompanied by a broader contribution located around $\sim$ 30 meV which remains above $T_C$. Their interplay may induce incommensurate structure in the superconducting state.

Effect of Nonmagnetic Impurities on the Magnetic Resonance Peak in YBa2Cu3O7

The magnetic excitation spectrum of a YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7 crystal containing 0.5% of nonmagnetic (Zn) impurities has been determined by inelastic neutron scattering. Whereas in the pure system a sharp resonance peak at E ~ 40 meV is observed exclusively below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, the magnetic response in the Zn-substituted system is broadened significantly and vanishes at a temperature much higher than T_c. The energy-integrated spectral weight observed near q = (pi,pi) increases with Zn substitution, and only about half of the spectral weight is removed at T_c.

High energy spin excitations in YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.5}

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to obtain a comprehensive description of the absolute dynamical spin susceptibility $χ'' (q,ω)$ of the underdoped superconducting cuprate YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.5} ($T_c = 52 K$) over a wide range of energies and temperatures ($2 meV \leq \hbar ω\leq 120 meV$ and $5K \leq T \leq 200K$). Spin excitations of two different symmetries (even and odd under exchange of two adjacent CuO_2 layers) are observed which, surprisingly, are characterized by different temperature dependences. The excitations show dispersive behavior at high energies.

Shifting of the magnetic resonance peak to lower energy in the superconducting state of underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.8}

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to determine the dynamic spin fluctuations in an underdoped high temperature superconductor YBCO_{6.8} single crystal. The magnetic resonance, that occurs around 40 meV in overdoped samples, is shifted to a lower energy, E_r= 34 meV. A constant ratio, $E_r/ k_B T_C= 4.9 \pm 0.2$, almost independent of the doping level, is found. According to numerous theoretical approaches, this finding supports the idea that the resonance energy is proportional (approximately twice) to the superconducting gap.
