Mean values of L-functions and symmetry

Recently Katz and Sarnak introduced the idea of a symmetry group attached to a family of L-functions, and they gave strong evidence that the symmetry group governs many properties of the distribution of zeros of the L-functions. We consider the mean-values of the L-functions and the mollified mean-square of the L-functions and find evidence that these are also governed by the symmetry group. We use recent work of Keating and Snaith to give a complete description of these mean values. We find a connection to the Barnes-Vignéras $Γ_2$-function and to a family of self-similar functions.

On the trace of Hecke Operators for Maass forms for congruence subgroups

Let E_lambda be a Hilbert space, whose elements are functions spanned by the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated with an eigenvalue lambda>0. The norm of elements in this space is given by the Petersson inner product. In this paper, the trace of Hecke operators T_n acting on the space E_lambda is computed for congruence subgroups of Gamma_0(N) of square free level, which may be considered as the analogue of the Eichler-Selberg trace formula [11] for non-holomorphyic cusp forms of weight zero.

Zeros of Fekete polynomials

The authors study the distribution of zeros of the Fekete polynomial f_p(t) (defined for p prime) as p -> infinity. They show that asymptotically a constant fraction of the zeros lie on the unit circle, and they investigate the constant of proportionality.

High moments of the Riemann zeta-function

The authors describe a general approach which, in principal, should produce the correct (conjectural) formula for every even integer moment of the Riemann zeta function. They carry it out for the sixth and eigth powers; in the case of sixth powers this leads to the formula conjectured by Conrey and Ghosh, and in the case of eighth powers is new.

Factoring Hecke polynomials modulo a prime

Let T^{N,chi}_{p,k}(x) be the characteristic polynomial of the Hecke operator T_p acting on the space of cusp forms S_k(N,chi). We describe the factorization of T^{N,chi}_{p,k}(x) mod l as k varies, and we explicitly calculate those factorizations for N=1 and small l. These factorizations are used to deduce the irreducibility of certain T^{1,1}_{q,k}(x) from the irreducibility of T^{1,1}_{2,k}(x).

The distribution of the eigenvalues of Hecke operators

For each prime $p$, we determine the distribution of the $p^{th}$ Fourier coefficients of the Hecke eigenforms of large weight for the full modular group. As $p\to\infty$, this distribution tends to the Sato--Tate distribution.

An extension of Hecke's converse theorem

Associated to a newform $f(z)$ is a Dirichlet series $L_f(s)$ with functional equation and Euler product. Hecke showed that if the Dirichlet series $F(s)$ has a functional equation of the appropriate form, then $F(s)=L_f(s)$ for some holomorphic newform $f(z)$ on $Γ(1)$. Weil extended this result to $Γ_0(N)$ under an assumption on the twists of $F(s)$ by Dirichlet characters. We show that, at least for small $N$, the assumption on twists can be replaced by an assumption on the local factors of the Euler product of $F(s)$.

Mean values of Dedekind sums

For a positive integer k and an arbitrary integer h, the Dedekind sum s(h,k) was first studied by Dedekind because of the prominent role it plays in the transformation theory of the Dedekind eta-function, which is a modular form of weight 1/2 for the full modular group SL_2(Z). There is an extensive literature about the Dedekind sums. Rademacher [8] has written an introductory book on the subject.

On the Selberg class of Dirichlet series: small degrees

In the study of Dirichlet series with arithmetic significance there has appeared (through the study of known examples) certain expectations, namely (i) if a functional equation and Euler product exists, then it is likely that a type of Riemann hypothesis will hold, (ii) that if in addition the function has a simple pole at the point s=1, then it must be a product of the Riemann zeta-function and another Dirichlet series with similar properties, and (iii) that a type of converse theorem holds, namely that all such Dirichlet series can be obtained by considering Mellin transforms of automorphic forms associated with arithmetic groups.
