Theory of excitation of Rydberg polarons in an atomic quantum gas

We present a quantum many-body description of the excitation spectrum of Rydberg polarons in a Bose gas. The many-body Hamiltonian is solved with functional determinant theory, and we extend this technique to describe Rydberg polarons of finite mass. Mean-field and classical descriptions of the spectrum are derived as approximations of the many-body theory. The various approaches are applied to experimental observations of polarons created by excitation of Rydberg atoms in a strontium Bose-Einstein condensate.

Simulation of guiding of multiply charged projectiles through insulating capillaries

Recent experiments have demonstrated that highly charged ions can be guided through insulating nanocapillaries along the direction of the capillary axis for a surprisingly wide range of injection angles. Even more surprisingly, the transmitted particles remain predominantly in their initial charge state, thus opening the pathway to the construction of novel ion-optical elements without electric feedthroughs. We present a theoretical treatment of this self-organized guiding process. We develop a classical trajectory transport theory that relates the microscopic charge-up with macroscopic material properties. Transmission coefficients, angular spread of transmitted particles, and discharge characteristics of the target are investigated. Partial agreement with experiment is found.

Laser-cluster interaction: x-ray production by short laser pulses

We investigate the heating of the quasi-free electrons in large rare gas clusters (N exceeding 10^5 atoms) by short laser pulses at moderate intensities (I~10^{15} Wcm^{-2}). We identify elastic large-angle backscattering of electrons at ionic cores in the presence of a laser field as an efficient heating mechanism resembling the Fermi shuttle. Its efficiency as well as the effect of collective electron motion, electron-impact ionization and cluster charging, are studied employing a mean-field classical transport simulation. Results for the absolute x-ray yields are in surprisingly good quantitative agreement with recent experimental results.

Shot noise in the chaotic-to-regular crossover regime

We investigate the shot noise for phase-coherent quantum transport in the chaotic-to-regular crossover regime. Employing the Modular Recursive Green's Function Method for both ballistic and disordered two-dimensional cavities we find the Fano factor and the transmission eigenvalue distribution for regular systems to be surprisingly similar to those for chaotic systems. We argue that in the case of regular dynamics in the cavity, diffraction at the lead openings is the dominant source of shot noise. We also explore the onset of the crossover from quantum to classical transport and develop a quasi-classical transport model for shot noise suppression which agrees with the numerical quantum data.
